Toronto’s Current State

Extensive public consultation process from February, 2006 to early April, 2006 in order to receive input on the Coordinated Street Furniture Program:http://www.toronto.ca/involved/projects/streetfurniture/pdf/public_consultation_report.pdf

1. Across the city, residents felt that plastic benches were geared primarily for advertising at the expense of comfort

2. Shortage of Well placed and well designed benches and bollards needed for people to sit on and lean against

3. Street furniture (particularly benches) should be designed to encourage people to spend more time in the public realm, participating in the life of the city

20 year contract with Astral Media includes:

o Installation of Benches (2,000 – replace 1,000 advertising benches; 1,000 other locations)

o No advertisements on bencheshttp://www.toronto.ca/involved/projects/streetfurniture/http://www.toronto.ca/involved/projects/streetfurniture/pdf/launch_backgrounder_2008-06.pdfhttp://www.toronto.ca/involved/projects/streetfurniture/pdf/city-council-report_2007-05-23.pdf
