Dear Friends,
Welcome to the CARE 2020 Impact Awards. Although virtual this year, we are gathered tonight to celebrate our collective work towards a world of hope and social justice, where poverty is overcome, and all people live with dignity and security. Together and every day at CARE, we address poverty through innovative programming and partnerships focused on gender equity. CARE is committed to ensuring individuals, families, and communities not only survive but thrive.
This year marks our 75th Anniversary. In 1945 a small group of Americans came together around a simple yet powerful idea and created the CARE Package®. Ultimately, CARE delivered more than 100 million CARE Packages to World War II survivors and families around the world.
Today, our programs operate in 100 countries, touching the lives and shaping the stories of nearly 70 million people. We focus on women’s and girls’ education and livelihoods, global health, disaster response, and food security. For the first time in our history, we launched the CARE Package as part of our programming in the U.S. in direct response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Last week we delivered our one millionth CARE Package across six U.S. cities assisting frontline workers and families in need.
Tonight, we honor an exceptional group of leaders who are dedicated to building a more equitable and just future for all. They have helped improve the quality of life for millions of women, men, and children around the world. We are enormously grateful for their sustained and powerful efforts.
COVID-19 is the biggest humanitarian disaster of our lifetime and certainly in CARE’s 75-year history. Our dedicated staff is responding in 69 countries across five regions. We are working not just to mitigate the health emergency of the pandemic, but to also address the accompanying hunger and economic devastation. Despite these tremendous challenges, I remain hopeful that CARE will rise to the challenge.
I am sincerely grateful to everyone for joining us at our first Virtual Impact Awards. I am inspired by how we are coming together during this challenging time, to mark this special milestone and to celebrate the courageous people who remain resilient under extraordinary circumstances. Thank you again for your support.
With gratitude,
Michelle Nunn President and Chief Executive Officer

about CARE and the
impact awards
75 years ago, in the wake of World War II, a group of concerned Americans came together to help millions of starving Europeans with the simple but powerful idea of creating the CARE Package®. Now, in the face of a once-in-a-generation pandemic, Americans are once again coming together to fight poverty and injustice everywhere.
This year, CARE will honor activists, politicians, philanthropists, and everyday heroes at the CARE 2020 Impact Awards. We will celebrate individuals delivering meaningful impact at home and abroad. We will showcase our work in communities to stop the spread of COVID-19, to make sure that communities have the essentials they need to live, and the activist partners who, through their voices, embody strength and resilience, and who show the world that they care.
As the 75th anniversary of the first CARE Package delivery approaches in 2021, the CARE Impact Awards will both pay homage to our history and spotlight how we are changing how we work to overcome this crisis, build back a stronger future, and show the world once again that Americans CARE.

Served 12.9 million people through humanitarian response.
40 percent of all projects tested new ways to fight poverty.
Supported 20.3 million people as they increased their food security and resilience to climate change.
Helped 2.6 million people live a life free from violence.
51 percent of projects engaged in advocacy.
Equipped 35.4 million people with information and access to sexual, reproductive, and maternal health resources.
Economically empowered 2.3 million women by expanding access to financial services, employment, and equitable wages.
CARE By the Numbers
CARE’s response to COVID-19 is the largest in our history. We are on the front lines in 100 countries to ensure the health and safety of millions of people. Still, it is not enough—too many are going hungry, too many families lack access to clean water, and too many girls are losing access to education.
We launched the CARE Crisis Response Campaign to raise 100 million dollars to impact 100 million people in 100 countries worldwide. An investment right now allows us to rapidly respond to changing global humanitarian conditions and helps prevent a devastating reversal of hard-won development gains. Our response is focused on:
• Saving and protecting lives by providing clean water and hygiene to combat the virus, and emergency food to prevent hunger and malnutrition
• Building resilient communities by harnessing the power of women entrepreneurs and farmers as the key to recovery through our proven, scalable programs
• Innovating for the future by investing in market-based approaches that position families to sustain gains in their livelihoods now and in the years to come
CARE was built for this moment—with 75 years of leadership and a local presence in 100 countries. We know that investing in women and girls is the key to global recovery, and we thank you for joining us to fight alongside them for a stronger, more equitable and secure future for all.
