ROTATIONS

The PGY2 Cardiology Resi-dency is a postgraduate training pro-gram that focuses on the develop-ment of the knowledge, attitudes and skills needed to provide pharmaceuti-cal care in cardiovascular pharmacy practice. The specialty residency is a coordinated educational experience that will assure the resident can pro-vide safe, efficacious and cost-effective cardiovascular pharmaco-therapy through patient care, teaching and project activities. Currently the program is a “Candidate for Ac-creditation” through ASHP.

The Residency Program at Saint Joseph Hospital is designed to provide broad exposure to patient-centered care in a dynamic and goal-oriented environment. Emphasis is placed on development of independent practice skills in cardiology, clinical and didactic teaching, research methodol-ogy, and self-evaluation.

Great importance is placed on the residents’ individual goals and ex-pectations thereby allowing program experiences and assessments to be regularly restructured tot keep pace with their development throughout the year. Upon completion of the program, each resident will be prepared to be

exceedingly competitive in both clinical or leadership opportunities within the profession.

A variety of rotational as well as longitudinal experiences help to refine in-depth knowledge and skills in inde-pendent practice. Rotations are offered in a variety of therapeutic areas and are tailored to the interests of the individual. While on clinical service, responsibilities of the resident include collaboration with healthcare team members and inde-pendent therapeutic drug monitoring to support optimal patient centered care.

Our PYG2 staffing com-ponent is equivalent to 32 hours per month. This comprises of 2 four hour shifts on business eve-nings. The resident will not have scheduled weekend shifts, how-ever, they will be the back up if the PGY1 is unable to fulfill their weekend shift. The weekday eve-ning is spent in the central phar-macy, verifying physician orders, answering clinical questions from the floor, and attending all codes. The pharmacy practice residents PGY1 staff every other weekend.

The on-call program is a resident learning experience that exemplifies the critical role residents serve in providing pa-tient care. Residents are members of the Adult Cardiac Code team as well as the Medical Rapid Response team which pro-vide care during emergency scenarios. The resident on-call is required to stay later in the evening to cover consults to the phar-macy that require significant time to re-search or a specialized knowledge base not in the pharmacy at that time. Our residency pro-gram does not have an overnight on-call pro-gram.

The Chief Resident program allows each resident to cultivate strong leadership qualities while serving as the primary contact for the residency during alternating blocks of time. Re-sponsibilities of the Chief Resident in-clude coordinating the Pharmacy and Therapeutics committee meeting, at-tending medical staff meetings, coordi-nating the publication of “Pharmacy Focus” (the pharmacy department’s interdepartmental bulletin), and plan-ning residency events.

Multiple teaching opportunities exist for residents including stu-dent precepting on rotations, lecture experiences, laboratory instruction and assistance, fac-ulty development seminars through the “Scholarship of Teaching and Learning Certifi-cate program” through the Uni-versity of Kentucky, and clinical rotation teaching. The certificate program is designed to intro-duce participants to academic

literature, contemporary phar-macy/health professions educa-tion, teaching styles, and phi-losophies. The primary philoso-phy of the program is built upon the Carnegie Foundation’s work on teaching as scholarship. Through engagement in semi-nars, documentation of formal teaching experiences, and devel-opment of a teaching portfolio, participants can document their participation and experience

STAFFING

TEACHING

Each resident attends a weekly seminar where fellow residents and preceptors present current data on various topics. Each resident is expected to attend and speak at the Kentucky Society of Health-System Phar-macist (KSHP) Fall or Spring conference. Saint Joseph Hospital provides financial compensation to attend these meetings. Attendance of the ACCP annual meeting is also encouraged.

while earning a certificate of completion. Participants will receive handouts, bibliogra-phies, and web site informa-tion to encourage future learn-ing and development. The program was recognized as a 2004 winner of the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy Teaching Innova-tions Award. http://www.mc.uky.edu/pharmacy/post_grad/tlcp.html

The resident will be provided a list of research projects upon the beginning of their year. The resident will use this list and interactions with mentors to select a suitable project by mid-August. The resident will present an overview of the re-search project to the residency research committee. This committee is composed of hospital individuals and they work to help guide the resident in study design, data collection, or statistical methodology. The resident will present the informa-tion for approval through our investigation review committee. Every two months, the resident will provide the committee with a status update. Also, the committee will help the resident assimilate the data for the research day at the University of Kentucky research day. In addition, the resident will need to submit a manuscript in publishable form prior to completing the year.

RESIDENT TRIP/RESIDENT FUN

BENEFITS

LEXINGTON

COMMUNITY SERVICE As a means to integrate the practice of pharmacy into the community and encourage the patient/pharmacist rela-tionships, Saint Joseph Hospital encourages our residents to participate in community events. Saint Joseph provides our residents a unique opportunity to volunteer at a local Salvation Army free clinic approximately one time a month. Each clinic is staffed by a clinic coordinator (medical resident), medical students, an attending physicians, a pharmacy student and a pharmacist. This is an excellent opportunity to help disadvantaged patients, help the physicians with medication decisions and precept student during the dispensing and counseling process. The residents this year have participated in “Habitat for Humanity” and administered influenza vaccines in the community.

Another highlight of the year is the professional development experience (PDE), which allows the residents to visit 2-3 residency programs. The residents should choose institutions that are within driving distance. They contact the programs and set up tours, luncheons, etc. with the host institution. This is always a fun trip and it allows for resident bonding and creating new contacts at other institutions. They then report back to our program about the trip which helps enrich our residency program and our department of pharmacy. Members of the pharmacy staff regularly get together at social events to relax and have some fun.
