Introduction to Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation Instructions
Imagine you are eating pizza with a friend one day when all of a sudden your friend begins to choke on
their pizza. You begin to panic and wish that you knew how to perform the abdominal thrust so that you
could help your friend. This instruction manual will provide you with the step by step procedure of
performing the abdominal thrust and Cardiac Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) that can be used in an
emergency. CPR is what you do when a person is unconscious and not breathing. After you do
unconscious choking you must check their vitals /check their pulse and breathing. If no pulse is found,
perform CPR until an Automatic External Defibrillator (AED) is available for use. This manual will
provide you with the steps and procedures to needed to perform CPR and the abdominal thrust, if you
would like to become certified to perform these procedures simply look for a CPR program in your
community to further your CPR education.
Materials Needed to Perform CPR and the Abdominal Thrust 1
Materials Needed to Perform CPR and the Abdominal Thrust • Face mask for rescue breath

Once you have obtained all the needed materials you are ready to prepare to begin learning how to
perform CPR and the abdominal thrust. To do so you must do the following:
1. Take the latex gloves and put them on your hands to ensure sanitation for both you and the
victim (the person you are practicing with)
2. Place the face mask on the victim’s face prior to performing the rescue breath to ensure the
health and that the procedure is sanitary for both you and the victim
3. You are now ready to proceed to learning how to perform CPR and the abdominal thrust

Performing Procedures on an Adult
Conscious Choking of an Adult Step 1
Check the scene, and then proceed to checking the person
Step 2
Be sure that you have someone call 9-1-1
Step 3
Lean the person forward and give 5 back blows using the
heel of your hand. See figure 1.
Step 4
Give 5 quick, upward abdominal thrusts. See figure 2.
Step 5 Continue the blows to the back and abdominal thrusts until one
of the following things happens:
• An object is forced out of the person’s mouth
• The person can breathe or cough forcefully
• The person becomes unconscious
Unconscious Choking of an Adult Step 1
Check vitals
1. Using index fingers, of the right hand, tilt the chin back gently.
Using left hand, gently tilt head back fully.
2. Place cheek close to the mouth of the victim. Looking down
the middle of chest, feel for breath on cheek and look for rise
and fall of chest for 10 seconds. See figure 3
a. If breathing, assume the recovery position *
b. If not breathing, proceed to step 2
Step 2
While still holding the head in this position, place mask on
face and deliver two slow and full breaths (rescue breaths)
while still watching the victim’s chest. See figure 4
a. If no rise and fall of the chest then repeat step 1
b. If there is a rise and fall of the chest, proceed to step 3
Step 3
While the head is still in the tilted back position, place your
middle finger and index finger on the victim’s neck for 10
seconds to check for a pulse
a. If a pulse is found, place victim in recovery position
b. If no pulse is found, begin CPR
*The Recovery position is the position where you place the victim after the victim
shows signs of breathing.

*To perform: First, take leg closest to you and prop up, while leaving the other leg
alone. Second, place arm closest to you across the victim’s body, away from you. Third,
while cradling the victim’s head, gently roll the victim, away from, onto his or her side
and hold them there. Fourth, continue to check the victim’s vitals constantly until medical
help arrives.
How to Perform CPR on an Adult After checking an ill or injured person, follow the following steps to perform CPR
Step 1
Give cycles of 30 chest compressions (see figure 5) and 2
Rescue breaths
Step 2
Continue CPR until one of the following things occurs
• The scene of the emergency becomes unsafe
• You find a sign of life
• AED is ready to be used
• You are too exhausted to continue
• Another trained responder arrives and takes over
•
How to Perform the Rescue Breath on an Adult Step 1
Tilt head back and lift chin, then pinch the nose shut
Step 2
Take a breathe and make a complete seal over the person’s mouth
Step 3
Blow into the person’s mouth to make their chest clearly rise. See figure 4
Note: Each rescue breathes should last about 1 second
What to do next
If breaths go in- Give CPR or use AED (if AED is immediately available)
If breaths do not go in- repeat steps 1-3 of unconscious choking

How to Perform CPR on an Infant
After checking an ill or injured infant, follow the following steps to perform
CPR:
Step 1
Give cycles of 30 chest compressions (Figure 14) and 2 rescue breaths
(Figure 15)
Step 2
Continue CPR until one of the following things occurs

How to Perform the Rescue Breath on an Infant Step 1
Give one (1) rescue breath about every three (3) seconds. Seal
mouth over infant’s mouth and nose. (See Figure15)
Step 2
After about two (2) minutes, recheck signs of life and pulse for
more than ten (10) seconds
Note: Each rescue breathes should last about 1 second
Note: Because infants are smaller than adult do not tilt head as far to
open airways.
What to do next:

How to Perform the Abdominal Thrust on an Infant When an infant begins choking and stops breathing….
(See Figures 16-19)
Step 1
Position the infant face-up on your forearm
Step 2
Place you other hand on top of the infant, using you thumb
and fingers to hold the infant’s jaw while sandwiching the
infant between your forearms
Step 3
Turn the infant over so that he or she is face-down on your
forearm
Step 4
Lower your arm onto your thigh so that the infant’s head is
lower than his or her chest.
Note: Maintain support of the infant’s head and neck by firmly
holding the jaw between your thumb and fore finger.
To give chest thrusts to an infant….
Step 1
Place the infant in a face-up position
Step 2
Place your free hand and forearm along the infant’s head and back so
that the infant is sandwiched between your two hands and forearms
Note: Maintain support of the infant’s head and neck by firmly holding
the jaw between your thumb and fore finger from the front while you
cradle the back of the head with your other hand
Step 3
Turn the infant onto his or her back
Step 4
Lower your arm supporting the infant’s back onto your opposite
thigh. The infant’s head should be lower than his or her chest, which
will assist in dislodging the object
Step 5
Locate the correct place to give chest thrusts by imagining a line
running across the infant’s chest between the nipples
Step 6
Place the pads of two or three fingers in the center of the infant’s chest use
the pads of these fingers to compress the breastbone. Only compress the
breastbone ½ to 1 inch and then let the breastbone return to its normal position.
Keep your fingers in contact with the infant’s breastbone
Step 7
Using this method, give a total of 5 chest thrusts.

Trouble Shooting What to do if the scene has become unsafe
Be sure to make the scene as safe as possible for both you and the victim prior to
performing CPR on them
What to do if you are attempting to perform the abdominal thrust and are unable to wrap your
arms around the victim’s stomach.
Step 1
Take right-hand and form a fist with the thumb inside
of the fist
Step 2
Take left hand and cover your right-hand
Step 3
Place the hand combo two (2) finger widths above the
victim’s center breastbone/ chest. (See Figure 19)
Step 4
Make a “J” movement with your arms by pushing into
the victim’s chest and moving upward
