Cardinia Creek Parklands Manna Gum Picnic Area Cardinia Creek from Inglis Road in Beaconsfield to Thompsons Road in Officer is soon to become a grand new park, Cardinia Creek Parklands. This linear park will take in the floodplain of the creek as well as some larger expanses of land north of Inglis Road. The park will form a green belt in this rapidly developing residential area. It will also conserve the natural creekside vegetation as a wildlife corridor. Manna Gum Picnic Area, the first section of these parklands open to the public, gives a glimpse into an exciting future. Vegetation The vegetation type in this area is mainly riparian (or floodplain) vegetation. This means the plants living in this area love moisture, and can survive seasonal flooding. The main trees in the park are Manna Gums, Eucalyptus viminalis. These are the tall smooth barked trees along the creek. There are also paperbarks, Melaleuca ericafolia, smaller shrubs with fine dark green leaves that form dense thickets. These plants and other native vegetation along the creek form valuable habitats for our native fauna. Fauna As yet not a great deal is known about the animals found in this area. The vegetation suggests that larger hollow- bearing trees may be homes to Brush- tailed Possums and possibly Sugar Gliders. The smaller trees may support a colony of Ringtail Possums. The vegetation attracts several species of birds, from tiny wrens to ducks and parrots, which use the trees to roost and nest. If you see any unusual birds or animals, please call the Parks Victoria Information Centre on 13 1963 so we can keep learning about this area. Group picnics Groups of fifty or more people need to notify the park office of their intended visit. You can contact the park via the Parks Victoria Information Centre on 13 1963.
