The Cardinals will open the season with the Red & Gold meet at home on September 19th. The season finale will be at the Appalachian Swimming Championships in Hunting-ton, WV on February 19th.

The annual Red/Gold Swimming Meet and Alumni Weekend are set for the weekend of September 18th-20th. “We are trying to make this year’s event larger than last. We had about 80-90 swimmers, alumni, and friends of WJU Swimming last year” said Cardinal Head Coach Rick West. We will have the Coach’s Social on Friday September 18th at 6:30pm. The venue will be released in next month’s newsletter. The Red/Gold Meet will begin at 1:00om on Saturday, Sep-

tember 19th. Immediately following the meet there will be a cookout and gathering in the Erikson Alumni Center adjacent to the pool area. Sunday, September 20th will be the Coach’s Brunch, lo-cation is TBA in the next is-sue. “We will be selling T-shirts to commemorate this year’s event. Every year our Jesuit family grows a little larger and this is by far my favorite event of the season” said head coach Rick West.

If you would like to RSVP for this event please contact the swimming offices by e-mail or phone and leave your name and the amount of people that will attending with you. Thanks for your support and GO CARDS!

about 25 freshman and transfers coming to Jesuit next season. We are very excited about the opportu-nity this provides for us. I am extremely proud of Nikki Rose, our recruiting coordinator for her efforts in helping to put this class together,” said Head Coach Rick West.

The Cardinals will graduate four seniors this season. Matt Bartoszek, Kevin Rico, Ali Henges-bach and Sara Bell will all move to the alumni end of the Jesuit family. How-ever, the largest freshman class in the school’s history will be coming to campus in late August. “We have

Paul Mangen, had this to say, “I do keep the “payday” system with me. The Payday system is for those ath-letes that missed a practice for an unexcused reason and therefore need to make up a practice. They (the practices) are not fun.” Lastly the question was asked, “What are your hopes and goals for your current teams?” Post university is fielding a brand new program and RJ’s goals reflected this, “We would like to emulate the early growth of WJU, when we won the conference and placed in the top 15 within the first five years of the team’s exis-tence.” Paul Mangen just took over

the reins of St Leo’s this summer and had this to say, “My goals for this team include learning the value of real, hard work. I hope they be-come students of the sport and find value in what they do now and how it will shape their lives.” Lastly Steve is taking over North Dakota a former Division II powerhouse that is now moving into Division I and had this to say, “To develop into a top 25 Division I program and regu-lar conference champion contender. Academically, I would like to see both the men’s and the women’s team maintain a 3.0 GPA every semester.”

One of the most important things of any family is to carry on the tra-dition of that family. Having the opportunity to speak with all of these coaches I am proud that the Wheeling Jesuit University, family tradition is alive and well and be-ing carried on throughout the country. Please make sure you keep up with all of the teams men-tioned and take a peak at their results as the year progresses. Thanks again for all those who retuned emails and thank all of you for being such good ambassa-dors of the Wheeling Jesuit name. GO CARDS!

Wheeling Jesuit announces 2009-10 Swimming Schedule

Head Coach Rick West announced the Wheeling Jesuit Swimming Schedule for the 2009-10 season. “We are beginning to move out of the rebuilding phase of this journey and move into the competition part of things. I really think that this schedule the direc-tion we are heading” said Rick West head Swimming Coach. In addition to the WVIAC opponents of West Virginia Wesleyan and Fairmont State College, Jesuit has added new Appalachian Confer-ence foe Notre Dame College of Ohio. The Falcon women finished second in the ASC last season while the men placed fourth. The season will open up with a few away meets. The Cards will visit Baldwin Wallace College and St Vincent College. Additionally the Cardinals will swim PSAC member IUP whose men’s and women’s teams finished 5th and 6th at the conference champion-ships respectively. Findlay Univer-sity will also host the Cardinals in

the very early stages of the season. Jesuit will open up it’s home campaign against Frostburg on No-vember 13th. On Saturday the 14th two newer teams will visit the Bird Bath. Malone University and Ur-bana University are in the early stages of adding swimming to their athletic departments and they are also in the process of moving from an NAIA program to NCAA Division II Status. A very similar process that WJU went through almost 15 years ago. “I am very excited to see schools adding both men’s and women’s swimming and the fact that they are in our area is an even greater bonus. I expect both squads to be very competitive and we are happy to a part of their growth” said Head Coach Rick West. This year’s winter rest meet will once again be the Crimson Hawk Invite at IUP. Three seniors will be honored at this year’s senior meet versus Fairmont on Friday, January

22nd. The Cardinals will wrap up the season by competing in the Appala-chian Swimming Conference Champi-onships at Marshall University on Feb-ruary 19th and 20th. A copy of this season’s schedule is located on the back of this month’s Cardinal Rules.
