This project integrates elements of design, STEM, science, math, and art as students learn about create a new item from cardboard.

There are 14 activities (1 page for each) for students to complete. Each page involves an issue or topic they must solve, design, create, or research for their creation.

As students work through each page, they will make their own decisions and choose the outcomes based on information they learn. By the end, all students will have completed the project, but each version will be based on user’s imagination, creativity, and knowledge base.

All pages can be geared towards multiple grade levels, although for some younger students the teacher may need to give more explicit instructions.

Students may choose to use multiple resources to complete each page. They might even choose to work with a partner, but you get final say on that.

There are 18 printable pages. Hand them out one at a time or staple them all together at once. Choose whichever way works best in your classroom. I prefer back-to-back with staples on the side like a book.

13 Problem Solver Students answer questions about their design.

14 BreakDown Students break down the specific parts they will need to make their creation.

15 Final DesignStudents make their final design after studying the rough drafts, identifying particular parts, and reflecting on what will/won’t work.

16 Alternate AnglesStudents must create designs of what their creation will look like from three different angles (top, side, and cross-section).

17 FeaturesStudents write the specific features that are included in their designs. This can vary between pieces and parts to moveable portions of the creation.

18 How It WorksStudents lay out (in four steps)(plus an extra page of unmarked steps) how the creation works.

What can you create?

Did you ever stop and think about how incredible cardboard is? We use it for almost everything, plus it is everywhere. Cardboard is one of those really cool materials and so much of it is made from recycled paper.

Cardboard is used for packages of all shapes and sizes, including groceries and boxes for shipping. There are all different kinds of cardboard too, from super-thin to heavy duty. BUT cardboard is about to be more than a box.

You are being asked to take that plain cardboard and create something NEW from it.

What you create is up to you. It could be an invention, a game, toys, or even a costume. Honestly, there are endless possibilities.

To help your cardboard creation along the way, you will brainstorm ideas, sketch out blueprints, and work through your ideas. THEN you will create your creation!

It’s time to get your ideas flowing.

EXTENSION IDEAS

Build IT. For Real.

Take a couple of days and let your students build their designs. Let them bring in all different types of cardboard and extra supplies, then let them design and build. Make students follow the design features they used in the PBL.

Cardboard creations are the perfect blend of cross-curricular activities that add major STEM components. This also gives students a chance to see how blueprints and designing on paper can lead to creations in the real-world.

Watch Videos

There are many great videos on building and designing with cardboard, but you can take it a step further and focus applying imagination skills too. Check YouTube and Vimeo for step-by-step tutorials that showcase the imagination from artists and kids.

RESEARCH

There is a huge collection of great information on building items from cardboard. There are many websites devoted to techniques and styles for creating just about anything. Let students do research as they jump into making their own creations.

share and present

As students work through this, make sure they are sharing their ideas to you and with each other. At the end of the PBL, allow them to present their findings like the the design, supplies needed, and how they would solve some of the issues. Because of the scope of this, there might not be enough time to present it all. Allow students to discuss personal highlights (and even the tough parts).
