Cardboard Bridge Construction Inventor 2009 Step 1 1.Open Autodesk Inventor Open the Card Board Bridge ipt file from the assignment log 3.Use the View Cube to orient the view in a direction which you can work 4.Right click on Sketch 1 and select Edit Sketch Step 2 1.Use the video lesson Creating the Side Elevation - Cardboard Bridge from the assignment log to create the End Post (AI) 2.Continue to create the Verticals BI, CJ, & DK Step 3 Your drawing should match this below before you use the mirror tool to create the rest of the Side Elevation 1.Offset Vertical BI 4mm 2.Then Offset CJ & DK 6 mm. DK & CJ 6 mm BI 4 mm Top Left Corner The top left corner should look like Figure 1 once you have Offset Vertical BI 4 mm. Use Trim and Extend to make it look like Figure 2. The corner does not match up! THAT IS CORRECT Step 4 1.Now your going to begin adding depth to each member of the Truss configuration. 2.Click on Extrude, place your cursor over the End Post and weight for the selection arrow to appear. 3.Scroll until only the End Post area is highlighted. 4.Enter a depth of 10mm. 5.Click OK Step 5 Once you make an Extrusion the Sketch becomes consumed in the Feature. You can continue to use that Sketch if you Share it. 1.In the Browser Pain expand Extrusion 1 2.Right click on Sketch 1 3.Select Share Sketch Step 6 Use the shared Sketch one to create further extrusions. Lets extrude one of the Verticals (BI). 1.Click on Zoom window to look at the left side. 2.Use Trim to remove excess lines to create Figure 1. 3.Right click and select Finish Sketch 4.Select Extrude and change the Extents Distance to 10 mm 5.Select Vertical BI and click OK (Figure 2) B I Figure 1 Figure 2 Step 7 Repeat those steps for Verticals CJ & DK. (You may have to do some trim or extending to get those areas to be enclosed shapes.) 1.Click on Zoom window to include Verticals CJ and DK. 2.Select Extrude 3.Change the Extents Distance to 10 mm 4.Select Verticals CJ and DK, click OK CD J K Your model now Your model should look like this up to this point: Step 8 Now we are going to prepare for the Extrusion of the Top Chord (10 mm.) 1.Click on Zoom window to the top left corner. 2.Right click on the shared Sketch 1 and select Edit Sketch. 3.Trim off any lines so you have an enclosed shape for the Top Chord. This is what it should like before you attempt to Extrude. Step 9 Now we are going to Extrude the Top Chord 10 mm 1.Right click and select Finish Sketch 2.Click on Extrude and make sure the Extents is set to 10mm. Check the direction of the Extrusion. 3.Select the Profile (Top Chord) and select OK. Step 10 Now set up to Extrude the Bottom Chord. (1 mm) 1.Right click on shared Sketch 1 and select Edit Sketch. 2.Use Zoom Window to Zoom into the lower right corner of the Truss assembly. 3.Use Trim and Extend to create Figure 1. 4.Use Zoom Window to Zoom into the lower left corner of the Truss assembly. 5.You have to Trim off the bottom line of the Bottom Chord and redraw it (to create an enclosed shape to Extrude (Figure 2). Figure 1Figure 2 Step 11 Now set up to Extrude the Bottom Chord. (1 mm) CONTINUED.. 1.Draw a Line from the bottom left corner to the vertical line of Vertical DK you created in Step 10-Figure 1. 2.Extrude the Bottom Chord 1 mm. Your model now Step 12 Now create the Diagonals and Extrude 1 mm. 1.Right click on shared Sketch 1 and select Edit Sketch. 2.Draw the Center lines for the Diagonals as shown below. 3.Use Offset to create the parallel lines that are 4 mm apart for each Diagonal. Step 13 Extrude both Diagonals 1 mm. 1.Select Extrude and repeat what you did for the other Diagonals. Your model should look like this. Step 14 Now its time to Mirror the rest of the Truss Configuration. 1.Select Mirror and click on each Extrusion that you have made in the Browser. 2.Click the Mirror Plan Button and select the face of the Bottom Chord. This face to Mirror Step 15 Now its time to Mirror the rest of the Truss Configuration. (Continued) 1.Now click OK! Step 16 Now create the top of the bridge! (Top Struts and Top Lateral Bracing) This is the sketch that I used to create half of the Top. 1.Create the 6x6mm Top Struts spaced out as shown below. 2.Then create the Top Lateral Bracing in two separate Extrusions. 3.I Extruded and used Mirror to create the remainder of the part. (Notice that I made each set of Lateral Bracing in two Extrusions.) Step 17 Add a work plane to the Truss Configuration in preparation for assembly. Remember, the distance between the Front and Back is 90 mm (100 mm center to center) 1.Start by creating a work plane down the center of your Truss Configuration. This will be used for constraining your Top in the correct location. 2.Select Work Plane from the Panel Bar, left click & hold the mouse button down to activate the Offset box. Type in -5 mm as the value. 3.Click Enter Step 18 Create a new Standard (mm).iam. (Metric Assembly) 1.Insert 2 Truss Configurations 2.Offset them 100 mm from each other using the Work Planes you created. (This leaves 90 mm between them) Step 19 Insert the Top Structure and Constrain the Top Surfaces. 1.Select Place Component from the Panel Bar and insert the Top Structure. 2.Constrain the Top Face of the Top Structure to the Top of the Truss Configuration. Step 20 Constrain the Top Structure to the Front Truss Configuration Work Plane. 1.Select Constrain/ Mate and the Front Truss Configuration Work Plane. 2.Select the opposing face of the Top Structure as your second selection. 3.Click Apply Work Plane Opposing Face This is what your model should look like now if you followed these directions. Your model now Notice that the Top Structure goes half way into the Truss Structure Step 21 Create the Portal Bracing and Struts. 1.Right Click in the assembly and select Create Component. 2.Name the New Component Portal Bracing. 3.Click on the face of the End Post to create the Portal Bracing (N, N) 4.Use Project Geometry to begin creating the sketch to the right. 5.Use Extrude to create the 6 mm Brace. Step 22 Now create the 1 x 4mm Diagonal Portal Bracing 1.Right click on the 6 x6 mm brace you just created and select New Sketch. 2.Create the Sketch illustrated to the right. 3.Use Extrude to create the 1 mm depth. Step 23 Now use Mirror to add the Portal Bracing to the other side 1.Right click on the Portal Bracing and place your cursor over Component. 2.Select Mirror. Step 23 continued. Now use Mirror to add the Portal Bracing to the other side 1.In the Mirror Components: Status Window Select Mirror Plane and select the plane illustrated here. 2.Click Next. This is the Work plane to use for Mirror Step 23 continued. Now use Mirror to add the Portal Bracing to the other side 1.When the box below appears, click on Portal Bracing. 2.Click OK. Step 24 Now create the Bottom Chords between the area illustrated below. The Bottom Chords are 15 mm high and 6 mm wide. They are going to be aligned with the centerlines of the Verticals and flush to the bottom o f the bridge. Step 24 Create a sketch for extruding Bottom Chords 1.Place a work plane on the bottom of the bridge.
