REMINDER: Children are not
permitted to play on playground
equipment before/after school as
there will be no duty staff.
Best’ are in Faction colours
and the large ‘Believe you
can’ TED has on our school
uniform. These are proudly
displayed in our undercover
area and are a visual
reminder of our values.
Maintenance Blitz As part of the West
Australian Government
maintenance blitz, we were
lucky enough to secure
funding to have some of the
school refreshed with
plastering and painting,
paving of the high traffic
area outside the Music and
Art room, increased flood
lights and security cameras,
plus tiling and ceiling
repairs. In addition, work
will begin this week on
resurfacing the
basketball/netball
courts. Please look
inside this
newsletter for information
on the Working Bee
where you could help out
to make more spaces
around the school ready for
student projects and
activities.
Welcome to the second
newsletter of 2020. The
long weekend mid-term
was a pleasant chance to
rest and spend some quality
time with family. As usual,
there is a lot happening at
Caralee and we will try to
capture some of the
highlights below.
Family Picnic
Thanks to all the parents
who attended our Family
Picnic today. It was a great
opportunity to have lunch
with your children at
school.
Halogen Young
Leaders Conference Our Student Councillors
will attend a Young Leaders
Conference on Monday, 9
March where they will hear
from motivational speakers
from diverse fields, and we
know they will represent
Caralee successfully. We
hope they find this day
beneficial as they grow into
their leadership roles.
Harmony Day
Breakfast Harmony Week celebrates
Australia’s cultural diversity.
It’s about inclusiveness,
respect and a sense of
belonging for everyone. A
reminder that our
Harmony Day Breakfast
will occur on Thursday, 19
March. Come along for a
bacon and egg muffin
breakfast served near the
Art Room.
Parents and Citizens
Association It was a pleasure to attend
the P&C Annual General
Meeting last week. The P&C
have a great positive
influence on our school, and
it was great to see so many
parents volunteer to be
Office Bearers. I would like
to thank the outgoing
Committee, as many of
them had been with the
school for a significant
amount of time. On page 2
is a full list of the Office
Bearers for 2020.
Positive Behaviour
Support (PBS) Our PBS team has
undertaken some training
this week as we begin to
work towards teaching our
expected behaviours
explicitly linked to our
behaviour matrix. You may
have noticed our terrific
TED posters behind the
stage in the Undercover
Area. Thanks to our student
support officer Sam Atkins,
and a team of students who
worked hard to make these
link to our values. You will
notice that our three values
of ‘Be Responsible’, Be
Respectful’ and ‘Be Your
Caralee CS acknowledges the Beeliar people as the Traditional Owners of the land on which the
school stands today, and pays its respects to the Noongar people and Elders both past and present.

Thank you to those who supported our first
(trial) RE-USEDAY TUESDAY
To help our children understand
the responsibilities that go with
the products we use, a stand
was set up outside the Admin-
istration office last Tuesday.
Families are encouraged to
deposit our specified recyclables
every Tuesday morning from
8.30am to 8.45am. Any volun-
teers to assist with the sorting
stand are welcome too!
Note: Please ensure that any bottle tops are rinsed of any residue
(eg. milk). You can also speed up the process by removing the white
foam insert from some milk bottle tops if possible (these are not
plastic and so have to go in land-fill). The sorted items are now
ready to be taken to Greenbatch this weekend by School Officers,
Mrs Charlton & Mrs Gleed, with the school’s E-Waste being taken
to the City of Melville’s Free Drop Off this Sunday.
Our current list of recyclables are:
Batteries for recycling plus aluminium coffee pods
Bread Tags for recycling to provide wheelchairs
Pens, markers, highlighters plus empty correction fluid pots
PET 1 - Strawberry, blueberry & tomato plastic packaging
containers (clean) & plastic bottle tops (clean)

Caralee Community School have
a very busy and successful P&C.
This could not have been
achieved without a dedicated
number of hard-working
volunteers, who organise events
to promote a cohesive school
community, as well as raise
funds to provide much needed
resources and facilities for our
students, raising just over
$40,000 for combined years of
2017 and 2018, and $30,000 for
the 2019 year.
2019 Contributions from
P&C to the School
Total of $8,935 donated to the
school, with financial contribu-
tions to the following:
End of year Graduation
and class books
Playground shade (near
main oval)
Paving painted games
(outside uncover area)
3 x Marquee shades for
sports days (red, yellow
and blue)
Fundraising
The P&C Fundraising sub-
committee organised and co-
ordinated some fantastic social
and fundraising events, such as
Food Stalls on Election Day,
Bunnings Sausage Sizzles
(2018 & 2019; the Fathering
Project (Gee Dads) taking the
lead). Easter Raffle, Colour
Run, Book Fair and the big
finish in 2019 with the School
Fete.
We hope to again carry on
through this year with the
continued support of volunteers
and new members to the P&C
Committee.
Our school’s P&C are always in
need of someone willing to help
out or be involved. Please come
along to a P&C meeting for a fun
and informal chat about what’s
going on in the school.
Thank you for taking the time to
learn about the P&C. We look
forward to working with you to
continue to build a stronger
community here at Caralee.
Currently the P&C meet Week
Two (2) and Week Eight (8) of
each term.
To the outgoing 2019 P&C
Committee, your time and
efforts have been greatly
appreciated.

Saturday, 14 March 8.00am to 10.00am
Come on down and be a part of our two hour working bee to
help remove the leaves and garden waste around the school,
and prepare the Veggie Patch (with an expected delivery of soil)
so that students can then be involved in a new season of planting!
BEFORE...
This year at Caralee, we have
introduced a new school initiative for
some of our Year 5/6 students.
STEAMEC is an extension class
designed to extend those students who
excel in the Science, Technologies, Arts
and Mathematics.
The students participate in an
extension class once a week, where
they will be challenged to participate in
open-ended activities to enhance their
problem solving skills, as well as
develop their coding skills and explore
new avenues for creativity and creative
expression. Stay tuned for some
exciting activities from the STEAMEC
group.

Wanjoo!
Wanjoo is Noongar for welcome, and
everyone is always welcome in the
Music room. To show that everyone is
welcome and belongs in the common
room that we share, students and staff
all created their own music note for
the Wanjoo Tree (pictured).
Under the guidance of myself and Mr
Acott, Caralee has started a band!
Made up of students in Year 5 and 6
the ensemble features two drummers,
three clarinet players, a bassist, two
guitarists, a piano player and a violinist.
The band is open to anyone who has
had prior music lessons. I am sure it
won’t be long before you hear us all
rocking – just like everyone at the
Highway to Hell event on the weekend.
Choir is back and better than ever! I
am really impressed with how the choir
is sounding this year, having only had a
handful of rehearsals so far. We are set
to perform on Harmony Day and the
ANZAC Day Service at the school
this term. The Choir will be
participating in The Massed Choir
Festival this year, giving them the
opportunity to perform on stage at the
Perth Concert Hall.
There’s plenty to come from the Music
Room, so buckle up and wait for the
show/s!
Music Mr Matthew Ryder

Wanted... If you have any baby jars with lids, or Cot-
tees jam jars, we would love them in the
Art room.
We are still collecting old jewellery, in
particular large beaded necklaces, we
would love to use them in some projects
we are working on.
All items can be dropped off to the Art
Room and left in the box at the back of
the room. Thank you.
SCHOOL PHOTO DAY
IS COMING!
Our school photo day will be held in the
beginning of Term 2.
Towards the end of this term, every
student will receive a Kapture Photo-
graphy order envelope to bring home.
More information to follow.

Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development
Update Jan 2020: Biosecurity Alert
Parent Representative, School Board Chairperson Amanda Buisman
My name is Amanda Buisman and I am the School Board
Chairperson. I have been a part of the Caralee School Commu-
nity for 10 years, and have had two boys at the school. My
eldest is now at Melville High School, and my youngest is in
Year Four. I joined the Board as one of the parent representa-
tives, and enjoy working with the staff, community members
and parents to ensure that we are achieving the best outcomes
for Caralee students.
Parent Representative David Cousins
My name is David Cousins and I am currently working at the
Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development,
working in the Entomology (insects) branch. I also spend time
working with the Emergency Management branch when there
is a new exotic pest incursion, such as the relatively local
outbreak of Red Imported Fire Ants in Fremantle. I moved into
Willagee with my wife a little over 10 years ago and am a
parent of two kids enrolled at Caralee. I would like to see an
increase in the connection of kids with the school community as well as an
improvement in computer literacy.
Community Representative Councillor Karen Wheatland
My name is Karen Wheatland and I am a Councillor at the City
of Melville, Ward councillor for Palmyra, Melville, Willagee. I
am an active community member and love Willagee and the
people within it. Both of my daughters are graduates of
Caralee Community school. Kimberley was Head Girl in 2012,
and Karri a councillor in 2014. I previously was on the School
Board, and am so happy to be back involved in such an
awesome school and community. I would like to help get the children of Willagee
access to everything they need to give their education, social and physical needs
the best chances to develop and grow. This is very important for us to do as all
children deserve the same access to these fundamental tools that will set them
up for the future
Community Representative Jenny Bawden
I am Jenny Bawden and I’m the team leader at Willagee
Library and also live locally. I’ve had the privilege of working
closely with Jason and the rest of the staff at Caralee/FLDC
since 2012 to run programs at the library after school that
support our young people. The benefits are amazing, we have
a real community feel about our library and it’s great to have a
space enjoyed by people of all generations. It’s probably the
best thing about my job, I really look forward to catching up
with the kids every day! I wanted to join the Board because I value the way
Caralee nurtures the students’ talents and aspirations from their first day of
school until they graduate. I think our library has a similar role to this which con-
tinues on with the students as they graduate to high school, and seeing them
grow and achieve their goals is a great thing to be a part of.
Principal Dane Franklin – Semester One (ex officio)
My name is Dane Franklin and I have previously worked in
schools in Western Australia, interstate and overseas and will
be Principal of Caralee Community School for Semester 1
2020. I want to assist, in any way I can, to support the school
community to achieve goals outlined in the 2019-2021
Business Plan. I acknowledge the well-recognised job the
school does in developing the social, emotional and academic
needs of our students.
Staff Deputy Principal Pearl Norman
My name is Pearl Norman and I am a Deputy Principal at
Caralee Community School. I joined the staff at this school in
2009, and am really passionate about what we represent and
what we strive to achieve – encouraging students to be the
best that they can be, through being responsible and respect-
ful, whilst “believing they can”. On a personal note, I am
married, I have two daughters and a son and two grand-
daughters and five grandsons.
Staff Teacher Janine Wain
My name is Janine Wain and I’m a teacher and mum of five. I
have spent most of my life in the country, born in Mullewa and
then teaching for many years in the Pilbara. We moved to
Perth in 2012, and this is my fifth year teaching at Caralee
Community School. I have loved watching our school grow
and develop over the last five years. It’s a wonderful school
with fantastic opportunities for all our students. I hope to
continue working towards enhancing our school and keeping it
great. I want to continue to provide fantastic opportunities for
all our students to flourish.
Staff Education Assistant Natasha Deery
I am Natasha Deery and I am a mother of two boys. I enjoy
many social activities but mostly my time is taken up with kids
sports and volunteer roles i.e. football club secretary. I love
animals and own a horse and soon I will own a greyhound. I
enjoy all aspects of ICT. I perform the roles of Special Needs
Education Assistant (SNEA) and Student Services Officer
(SSO) at Caralee. I also assist in co-coordinating the Caralee
Homework group held at the Willagee Library. I also hold a
position on the School Board as a staff member. I would like to see all children,
who don't always have the best start in life, have access to the same opportuni-
ties as others. I would also like to see that they are always doing their best and
by creating a prime learning environment, ensure that each child reaches their
full potential.
