This month’s issue focuses on your auto andthe environment. With the world at the mercyof pollution from products and auto emissions, there are new solutions in the automotive cir-cle for positive change. Newer hybrids and fullelectric vehicles are being generated withmost developed nations lapping up ownershipof these units. According to Scott Fletcher,Senior Editor at Popular Science, the dynamicsfor innovation are falling into place. Still the C-

X75 Jaguar on the cover was the concept for ahybrid sports car, however mass productionhas been cancelled but the hybrid technologywill be used in research and development ofnewer models. In addition, there are some pop-ular automotive products to help you save fuelin this issue. Remember to ARRIVE ALIVE,don’t drink and drive, stay off the cell phoneswhile driving and of course... continue to keepreading!

There were both joy and sadness at the con-clusion of this year's Le Mans 24 Hours asAudi secured their 12th win at the race since2000 with a consummate run by the No2 carof Tom Kristensen, Allan McNish and LoïcDuval, tempered by the death of Danish driverAllan Simonsen in his Aston Martin during theopening laps.

The 90th anniversary edition of the endurance

classic had been plagued by on-and-off rain inthe days before Saturday's afternoon start andbegan under damp, greasy conditions. An imme-diate and thrilling battle between the Audis andToyotas, who were showing much better pacethan they had in qualifying, ensued but was cur-tailed under a yellow flag when Simonsen hit thebarriers at Tetre Rouge. He was later pro-nounced dead at the circuit's medical facility.

T&T heads closer to the Com-pressed Natural Gas (CNG) change. The Government had already ap-proved the sites where the new sta-tions for CNG would be placed a fewyears ago. However, most driverswilling to make the conversion areconcerned about the reliability ofsupply of CNG and a supply of CNGequipment. Most countries such asArgentina, Brazil and India are big onCNG and have set up refueling sta-tions to accommodate a publicswitch.

Some advantages of CNG include: • In comparison to Premium gas

which is $ 5.75 TT per litre. CNG ismore economical at $1.07 per litreand both will carry the same dis-tance

• Cleaner fuel leaves less contami-

nates in the engine resulting inlonger life span, lesser servicing

• An environmentally friendly fuel withless carbon emissions

• No need to change oil as often be-cause of less lead, benzene, sulphurcompounds

• Does not ignite on heated surfacesmaking it a safer option

According to www.defence.pk, Pak-istan has the most CNG refueling sta-tions and the highest number ofvehicles using CNG. The combustionof fuels like gasoline produces a lot ofpollution, which harms the environ-ment. To save the environment fromthe adverse effects of pollution, thegovernments of many countries haveswitched to using CNG vehicles forpublic transportation. Hopefully T&Tcan do the same.

• The gasoline-electric hybrid car is just whatit sounds like -- a cross between a gasoline-powered car and an electric car. Explaining thedifferences between a gasoline-powered carand a typical electric car is simple.

• A gas-powered car has a fuel tank, whichsupplies gasoline to the engine. The engine thenturns a transmission, which turns the wheels.

• An electric car, on the other hand, has a set ofbatteries that provides electricity to an electricmotor. The motor turns a transmission, and thetransmission turns the wheels.

• The hybrid is a compromise. It attempts tosignificantly increase the mileage and reducethe emissions of a gas-powered car while over-

coming the shortcomings of an electric car.

To be useful to you or me, a car must meetcertain minimum requirements. The car shouldbe able to:

• Drive at least 300 miles (482 km) before re-fueling

• Be refueled quickly and easily • Keep up with the other traffic on the road

A gasoline car meets these requirements butproduces a relatively large amount of pollutionand generally gets poor gas mileage. However,an electric car, produces almost no pollution, butmost can only go 50 to 100 miles (80 to 161km) between charges except the new Model Sfrom Tesla which reaches 300 miles before thenext charge.

There are various waysconsumers can fall victim toauto insurance fraud, includ-ing accident scams, insurertricks and referral fraud.Whether you're buying autoinsurance or on the road, it'simportant to know how toprotect yourself.

When Buying Auto Insur-ance

• Be wary of insurance offersfrom door-to-door salespeo-ple, telephone callers or unso-licited Internetadvertisements.

• Be suspicious if the price ofinsurance seems much lowerthan the competition's. Itcould be a scam, or the cover-age might be full of exclu-sions that are only discoveredwhen you need the coverage.

• Contact your insurance de-partment to make sure theagent and company are li-censed.

• Check the company's rating.

• Make sure "free services"aren't actually hidden in yourinsurance bill.

• Ask if the insurance companyhas purchased or invested invehicle repair shops; this is ared flag. You are not requiredto use them, and they will notgive you better service orprices — in fact, they could beworse.

• Guard your insurance identifi-cation number the same wayyou would your social secu-rity number, because once it'sstolen, criminals can use it ina scam.

TIC 2013 has enjoyed an Accord winning experience this yearas Classic Motors has chosen this event to launch their newestmodel to the local business community. The Accord landed justdays before it was wrapped and rolled into the Port of Spainballroom and put on display at the front entrance.

Visitors expressed surprise and delight as they entered theroom to see the two exquisite vehicles surrounded by a simpleand elegant décor The Accord 2013. According to Car and DriverMagazine, Comparo Issue, “No conversation involving Automotivecubicles is complete without THE BOSS, the Honda Accord. Newfor 2013, it is the quintessential family sedan, refined, spacious, and practical. The latest Accord has vanquished every mid-sizedfoe it has faced so far and landed – for the 27th time - on our topten list.”

The all-new 2013 Accord Sedan marks the beginning of theninth generation of Honda’s best-selling midsize car. More luxuri-ous, more sophisticated, better performing and better equippedthan any other model in the Accord’s 37-year history, the 2013model remarkably advances the sense of luxury and craftsman-ship, vehicle dynamics and the range of standard equipment tothe highest levels in their class.

The exterior length and wheelbase of the Accord Sedan isslightly more compact than the prior generation Accord while stillproviding improvements in key interior dimensions including rearlegroom and trunk volume. The result is a spacious all-newAccord that boasts a sportier appearance, more responsive han-dling and improved driving dynamics. From the tip of the frontbumpers to the end of the exhaust finishers, literally nothing wasleft unexamined when redesigning the Accord. This includesmajor elements like the unit-body, sheet metal, glass and aerody-namics, along with interior features and electronic systems, theengines and transmissions, the chassis components, and themany safety systems. Despite the complete generationalchanges, however, the 2013 Accord Sedan is still tightly focusedon providing the same long-established blend of unbeatableHonda safety and security, value for money, fun-to-drive perform-ance and handling, and passenger comfort and convenience.

The 2013 Accord can be viewed at the showroom of ClassicMotors on the corner of Charles and Richmond streets as well asAnsa Automotive south on Royal Road San Fernando.

The 2014 Accord PHEV is powered by an all-new“Honda Earth Dreams technology” two-motorhybrid system. It utilizes a 124-kilowatt (kw) elec-tric motor that also acts like a continuously variabletransmission (e-CVT) mated to a 2.0-liter Atkinson-cycle four-cylinder engine. A 6.7-kilowatt-hour(kwh) lithium-ion (li-Ion) battery provides power inall-electric mode, and regenerative braking is han-dled by an all-new electric-servo braking system.

Drivers will have the option to manually select fromthe default start-up all-electric mode to hybrid mode.Honda’s first production plug-in vehicle earned 115miles per gallon equivalent EPA rating for its (limited)13 miles of estimated all-electric range. The plug-inAccord can be fully charged from a low-charge indica-tion point in less than three hours using the supplied120-volt charger when plugged into a standard 120-volt household electrical outlet, and in less than onehour using a 240-volt Level 2 charger.

Reduces climate change Carbon dioxide (CO2) from burninggasoline and diesel contributes toglobal climate change. You can doyour part to reduce climate change byreducing your carbon footprint!

Increases energy sustainabilityOil is a non-renewable resource, andwe cannot sustain our current rate ofuse indefinitely. Using it wisely nowallows us time to find alternative

technologies and fuels that will bemore sustainable.

Reduces oil dependencecostsOur dependence on oil makes us vul-nerable to oil market manipulationand price shocks. Find out how oil de-pendence hurts our economy!

Saves you moneyGet better savings in fuel costs eachyear by choosing the most efficientvehicle that meets your needs.

Fill it up If possible, fill your tank up all the way. Try toavoid $10 here and $10 there because witheach trip you make to the gas station you arewasting gas.

Find the right timeThe time of day that you fill up your gas tankdoes make a difference. It is best to fill up yourtank early in the morning or late at night(preferably in the morning). This is becausethe ground is cooler. Cooler ground = densegas. Hotter ground = expanded (more vapor-ised) gas.

Turn off your carKeep your car off as much as possible. Whenyou idle you get zero miles per gallon. Yes, ittakes gas to turn on a car but only about 20-30 seconds worth of idling. Also, the more youidle, especially with the A/C on, the more gasyou waste.

Use A/C EfficientlyUse your A/C when you are driving at higherspeeds. Open your windows when driving atlower speeds. At lower speeds your A/C will burnmore fuel, but at higher speeds the drag will burnmore.

Drive SteadyTry not to slow down and speed up. Driving at aconsistent speed saves you money. If you can,use cruise control. Every time you accelerate, youuse gas. Stay a safe distance behind the car infront of you while driving so that you won't haveto slow down and speed up as much. If you dohave to stop (such as for a light), take off slowly. That fast acceleration will burn more gas.

Stay CoolAlways try to park in the shade. If you can't, thenpark your car so the gas tank is pointing awayfrom direct sunlight. When your car heats up, sodoes your gas tank. Gasoline will evaporate rightout of your tank regardless of the weather.
