CHAPTER 1 INTRODUCTION1.1 RESEARCH BACKGROUNDThis project is on the development of Trip Us Car Rental mobile application. Trip Us is a proposed mobile application that provide automobile rental service in Malaysia. As there are many system and manual car rental services have been developed in the business in Malaysia, it is a good opportunity to publish something new that is Trip Us! Car Rental mobile application. Since it is the first mobile application in the Play store or Apps Store, it will definitely help user for the effective way to rent a car. According to Trip Us, the upgraded mobile application provide customers with new functionality, including synchronized pricing across channels to reflect customized preferences and insurance options and more available types of car for in-app selection. Besides that, the application process account information for the customers, insurance and other add-ons in order to help customers see the total cost of the rental. Other features allow customers to make, modify or cancel a car reservation, view past rental details, find rental locations, select car preferences and compare the existing and modified reservation data. This mobile application service offers car rental that the process of reserve a car seems very simple, in fact it is a complex undertaking. The car itself is very expensive item so a person is likely to rent in their lives apart from accommodation. Trip Us car rental work in a network of other service providers and all booking of a car are made online just through the smartphones.

1.2 PROBLEM STATEMENT

In general, Trip Us is developing to cater problems that occur in the process of booking transport. Before this, all the booking process prepared manually or through the computer systems. Based on the research and study that have been done, there are several problem occur regarding car rental services in Malaysia :

There is no existence of Trip Us mobile application rental services in MalaysiaSince there is no Trip Us mobile application rental service available in Malaysia, researcher needs to construct a framework for developing Trip Us mobile application rental services. Booking process is not efficientThe problem is when using the computer system, it is not too efficient as user have to open their laptop to serve the website and it will take many process to rent a car while they may prefer to make a call which it will be more faster. Data redundant and data lossSometime data or form of the booking process that was filling by the user were loss because of inaccurate work and sometime the responsible staff handle redundant data which is a different form but with the same information. Problems also occur when the important data that fill in the form is not complete such as contact number. It will cause a problem for the responsible staff to contact this person to inform them when there is a problem occurs. Waste time and energyUser that want to make a booking need to call or come to car rental company. It is contribute of wasting time, energy and money.

1.3 RESEARCH OBJECTIVES

1. To identify and establish the requirement of the user needs2. To design prototype that can attract user to use this application3. To evaluate the effectiveness of the prototype4. To analyse the requirement features of existing car rental services system5. To develop the framework for car rental mobile application in Malaysia

1.4 RESEARCH QUESTIONS

1. What are the technique used to gather user requirement of this Trip Us car rental? The technique used to gather user requirement of this mobile application is by the questionnaire and interview. First, we make a questionnaire to a sample of respondents selected from a target population which is our target user are students, residence and tourist. Next, we do interviews that is most widely used technique for collecting data which will direct and easy to improve the application since it is useful to obtain detailed information about personal feelings, perceptions and opinions.

2. What are the section included in the questionnaire? The questionnaire contains 20 questions which divides into three sections that are demographic, usability problem and features request by user. This questionnaire is used to process and analyze the relatively large amount of data.

3. What is the approach in designing the prototype? The approach in designing the prototype firstly is through the low fidelity. Prototypes with lower fidelity can force the audience to concentrate on the solution itself, and encourage the suggestion to make big changes, so it is very useful to collect feedback from users at a very early phase. Next approach design to mid fidelity, prototypes with middle fidelity provide a GUI that is closer to the final result, so it can be used in design document and help developers to build the application.

4. What is the category of user interface design principle using for Trip Us mobile application prototype? The main category of user interface design principles in this mobile application are learnability, flexibility and robustness. This mobile application support for learning for users of all levels, support for multiple ways of doing tasks and support for recovery. The element that be used in this application are consistency, familiarity, dialog initiative, responsiveness and many more which largely contribute in developing a good design interface.5. How do you measure the effectiveness of the Trip Us car rental prototype? The effectiveness of this prototype are measured by the data gathering in user requirements which is through questionnaire, interview and presentation of low fidelity. Within this way, there are many feedbacks from user which really beneficial in improving design in the mobile application. The suggestion from the audience also essential to measure the effectiveness of this mobile application.

6. What are the technique in order to achieve effectiveness? The technique in order to achieve the effectiveness are by conducting the survey. After the analysis of the questionnaire, we can analyse and try to fulfil user requirements and their needs. As the user are very important in developing this mobile application, it usually surveyed based on the user experience and through the real world situation. We try to relate the existing system with the new mobile application, by this the effectiveness can be achieve as we know how to interact with user.

1.5 RESEARCH SIGNIFICANCEIn the new technology exposed and global economy progress, every organizations, institution or businesses are looking for new ways or approaches in order to enhance and emphasize their capability and productivity. With this research it allows the development of the Trip Us mobile application as it will make user friendly and more efficient compare to the manual or computer system. As nowadays smartphone is one of the essential gadget to have in every people to stay connecting, it also will make it easier to make a car reservation just in a few minutes with this mobile application. The research is important for the user to keep in touch with their customers. Besides that, consumer can save their time and energy during reservation process and they are able to make reservation process anytime and anywhere without need to deal with any car rental services company. This research will give beneficial to consumers without needs to ask or seek for the car rental service in conventional way and the process also will become more faster. Meanwhile, this study is also significance for this mobile application which is will produce more efficient and interactive. In order to attract the users to use the mobile apps, the design should be good one which easy to learn for novice user. The icon used in the mobile application also should be easy to recognize and by make some tagline or any interaction will make user memorize and frequently use the application.Mobile commerce in this research is really essential as it is the explosion of applications and services that becoming accessible from Internet-enabled mobile devices. Mobile phones impose very different constraints than desktop computers. Cellular phones have become so popular that many businesses are beginning to use mobile commerce as a more efficient way to communicate with their customers. The research can increase the productivity of user using this mobile application. The user are able to update their self-information and the reservation form through Trip Us. The research will help managing the reservation process and make it easier for them. Besides that, managing the transport booking using a system will reduce the space to store data physically because all the related information is store in database. In addition, for mobile system security, the access to admin will be capture by the mobile application and the data entry will be record into the database.

CHAPTER 2 RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

2.1 INTRODUCTION

The research methodology involved the administration of questionnaire on a sample of the car rental services in Malaysia. This section outline the research instrument, data collection method and methods of data analysis. In order to achieve in designing the good prototype for all user that will be using this mobile application, we use two kinds of method which questionnaire and interview survey.

2.2.1 INTERVIEW

Research instrument

The research instrument was an interview. A method of data collection, information or opinion gathering that specifically involves asking a series of questions. Typically, an interview represents a meeting or dialogue between people where personal and social interaction occur. This interview consist of 6 questions regarding the mobile application of Trip Us car rental.

The sample of questionnaire can be found in Appendix.

We use thisinterview methodof research because it is a conversation to help improving the prototype of the mobile application. The interviewer in one-to-one conversation collects detailed personal information from individuals using oral questions.

Data Collection MethodsThe interview were made by asking to 3 respondents about this mobile application. The interviewee are between the students to make it easier for us to conduct this kind of methods. The interview were collected immediately after they have answered several questions to improve the mobile application. It takes a few days to collect the interviews.

Method of Data AnalysisWe analyse the data by the most interviewer said which is give benefit to this mobile application. Sometimes, this kind of interview method has its disadvantage which the data collected may not be so valid or correct because we interview random people. However, it is an effective way since we can immediately get the data by just asking several questions and they can evaluate and give comments that will be analyse after all the interviews has done. Other than questionnaire, we also use interview method to increase the quality of the prototype that have been design. The interview method will be more consistent with the objectives of this research. The result were report in 6 questions and the answers from different interviewee which it is for the survey for us to get feedback from them. The data collected are recorded in Microsoft Word to evaluate what they said and compare which data can be consider as logic and accepted in improving the mobile application.

2.2.2 SURVEY

(a) Research instrument :The research instrument was a structured questionnaire constructed in English. It is use to obtain the necessary data to answer the research questions and eventually to achieve research objectives. The questionnaire consist of 3 sections :

Section A : DemographicSection B : Usability ProblemSection C : Features Request by User

Section A questions is about respondents background which consist 7 questions, Section B is about user experience using the existing system before and by this we can detect the usability problem. While Section C consist of 6 questions which ask about the features request by user such as the back, home button and other interactivity that should be put in the designing the interface of the mobile application.

The sample of questionnaire can be found in Appendix.

Data Collection MethodsThe questionnaires were distributed to all the 15 students and outside people who have been randomly choose. The respondent is who living in college while outside people mostly living in residential area. The questionnaires were collected immediately after have completed the answer. The respond rate was 100%. It take almost a few days to collect the questionnaires.

Method of Data AnalysisThe technique that were used to analyse the data collected are by create the table for each questions. We use primary sources as the method in our research that is questionnaire. The using of primary data is more accurate and consistent with the objectives of this research. Although it requires more time, it also an effective way to do some survey. Each table were used to present data in simple and meaningful form. The result were report in 3 sections that are; Section A : Demographic, Section B : Usability Problem and Section C : Features request by user. Table results are recorded in the Microsoft Excel to evaluate the most data choose by the respondent.

(b) Research instrument :The research instrument was an evaluation questionnaire constructed in English. A good questionnaire can be powerful tools to inform the evaluation and a poorly designed questionnaire can make life difficult for both those that have to complete it, and those that have to analyse the data. The questionnaire consist of 3 parts :

Part A : User Interface DesignPart B : Features Part C : Usability Principle

Each parts consist of 10 questions which user must indicate their rating towards from 1 to 5 (Strongly disagree to Strongly agree). Part A questions is about user interface design which it is user friendly or not and others. Part B is about the features in the mobile application for instance back, next and home button are applicable. While Part C are about the usability principle in the designing the interface of the mobile application such as the principle of learnability, flexibility and robustness.

The sample of evaluation questionnaire can be found in Appendix.Data Collection MethodsThe questionnaires were distributed to 6 students who have been randomly choose. The respondent is who living in college and residential area. The evaluation questionnaires were collected immediately after have completed the answer. The respond rate given are based on the view and perspectives of the users about the middle fidelity Version 1. It takes a few days to collect the questionnaires.

Method of Data AnalysisThe technique that were used to analyse the data collected are by create the table for each questions. We use primary sources as the method in our research that is questionnaire. The using of primary data is more accurate and consistent with the objectives of this research. Each table were used to present data in simple and meaningful form. The result were report in 3 parts that are; Part A : User Interface Design, Part B : Features and Part C : Usability Principle. Table results are recorded in the Microsoft Excel to analyse the rating of the respondents regarding the car rental mobile application.

CHAPTER 3 RESEARCH DESIGN3.1 LO-FIDELITYFirstly, the research design in developing this mobile application is by using the lo-fidelity. Lo-fi prototype is a technique sketches the storyboard using the pen and paper. It just a rough model of this mobile application. This prototype used early in design which is often used with scenarios, bringing more detail, and a chance to role-play. It a kind a series of sketches and contains 6 layers that showing how a user might progress through activities. As there are many feedbacks from audience in the class, we have minimize the layers from 8 layers to 6 layers to make it easier and simple for the novice user to use this mobile application. This also will decrease the steps in rent the vehicle and make it more efficient to use. Sample lo-fidelity are shown in Appendix.

This is the first interface user will see when they want to use this application. For the main menu we can see that the logo is a learnability which we can guess the logo of car that represent this car rental application. This logo also will be maintain to every layer which apply the consistency elements. There are four icons in this mobile applications which are car reservation, edit/modify, sign-in, about us. Every icon will be include with the image that are familiar with the word phrase. The element of observability is using here which it will make easier for user to recognize every icon without any instructions needed. Next is the tagline also will be interactive for user. The language drop down we change it to Setting for make it easier for user to set it. Here, it use the affordance elements.

Figure 1.0 First interface

Figure 1.1 Second interfaceThis is the second interface design. This prototype design also include the home button, back and next button which apply the principle of affordance. Affordance is a perceived and actual properties of an object that determine how it could be used. For example, the buttons that appear at every layer are clickable and the position of the button also easier for the user. Next are the list of cars that will be shown when user the types of car display, user knows and understand what the image display said without any instructions.

This is the third interface design. When user clicks Small to Full Size, it will display the details of the type of car that has been choose from user. Here, we can see the feedback principle are used in this interface. Other than that, flexibility also appear in this task execution which is it transferred from the mobile application and user.Figure 1.2 Third interface

The fourth interface describe the additional option that user can select for their conformance which in the optional, they may click either one. The affordance elements is using in this interface which is when they click at additional option, details will come out. Moreover, for the optional details, it display the customer needs. This show the natural mapping when user are not needed the explanation to continue the process. Besides that, as we can see the added and info button, it will change the colour when user click it. This use the element of feedback from the application to user.

Figure 1.3 Fourth interface

The fifth interface show the form that user must fill to continue the car reservation process. This interface include the mapping principle which user can immediately understanding and know what to do. When user does not fill all the details need by the application, it will appear the *error during execution, this apply the robustness element which. Next, when user has fill all the details correctly, the dialog initiative will show to user does they want to continue to reserve or not as it will immediately recover when there are any mistakes. The search and calendar button also show the affordance which is user can easily recognize the icon and make it easier for them to use it.

Figure 1.4 Fifth interface

Figure 1.5 Sixth interfaceThis is the last interface of the low fidelity prototype. This show the receipt of the last process of the car reservation. It apply the learnability principle when user understand all the process and achived maximal performance. Besides that, the confirmation details is display when user has fill all the forms before. It is also a good conceptual model since it the last phase, this will be more attractive and enjoyable using this mobile application.

3.2 MIDDLE FIDELITYAfter doing the lo-fidelity prototype, it continue with the middle fidelity which this prototype more schematic and simulated functionality with easy navigation. This mid-fi prototype often based on screen printouts or screen simulations. As we can compare between the low-fidelity and mid-fidelity, there are much improvements since we get a lot of suggestions and comments in design it much better. We add some more layer to make it real by show all the icon in the main menu are functional. We design the mid-fi Version 1 using Adobe Photoshop and for the version 2, we develop it to software JustInMind Prototyper 6.3.0 which can immediately create the mobile application prototype that can easily transfer and use directly to the smartphones. Since we do not design the high-fidelity prototype, we try to design it looks more like the final system than a low-fidelity version.

COMPARISON BETWEEN MIDDLE FIDELITY VERSION 1 AND VERSION 2Firstly, we change the logo since there is no uniqueness in the old logo. We also change the position of the tagline and bold the text. Besides that, we also enlarge the setting button. Figure 1.6 (a) Layer 1

3.4DESIGN RATIONALE The design rationale that are using in this mobile application use the concept of Human Computer Interaction principle. There are some principle that can be apply in designing this mobile application prototype. Firstly, as shown in Appendix that have low fidelity and middle fidelity, we can include the human computer interaction principle that have been learn which are learnability, flexibility and robustness. As summarized of the low fidelity prototype design in this mobile application, we use the predictability, consistency, and familiarity of metaphor, flexibility which is dialog initiative. Other than that, elements of observability, recoverability, good affordance and mapping also included in developing this mobile application. All of this can make our application effective and efficient to use by the user. Besides that, it will support the memorability of the user to use our application even they are the novice user. We used red and grey theme for our application because based on the survey, most of the user prefer that colour. We also need to ensure that our design is simple as well as user can see the interface clear and understandable suitable with the car rental mobile application. For each icon, we provide the text below it as the user prefer based on our survey. So, they will not confusing to click each of the icon.We applied these principles since developing the low-fidelity. This is because from this draft we will become more understanding the user requirement and also can provide for them a clear navigation and simplicity of the process. These also is the first step to ensure user comfortable and stay enjoyable to use our application.

CHAPTER 5 RESEARCH RECOMMENDATION

5.1 CONSTRAINTThere are several limitations of this study which are identified in order to complete the research. Due to this situation, precaution step is taken to avoid these factors from affecting the result of this research.

Mobile application limitationWe must understanding both the capabilities and limitations of each platform. Smartphones with touchscreen limit the on-screen density of controls that users can accurately manipulate with a finger. The problem in designing the mobile applications is the need to accommodate the design constraints and usability challenges mobile devices impose while focusing on users goals within a mobile context of use. Moreover, the difficulty of typing and small size of mobile screen limits the number of controls and the amount of content that can appear on them.

Research limitation The sampling frame for this research was limited to students in Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) Shah Alam only. For instance, when collecting data by interview, mostly the students who are living in residential area or college were selected to do this task. The convenience sampling method that we used in this research may have lead to biases in selection respondents due to time and resource constraints.

Availability of the secondary dataWe have difficulty to get additional information from the websites and lack of journals related to the mobile application regarding car rental services since it is a new proposed application. There also a limitation in resources and information about the designing and developing the mobile application. Thus, the process to collect information about the car rental mobile application may be difficult.

Lack of experienceWe do not have experience conducting research besides lack of knowledge in designing the mobile application. This is quite difficult to conduct research especially when we ourselves do not have experience and the ability to collecting data.

Time constraintsThe time given was limited and constraints. We have to manage time carefully in order to avoid wasting time. Besides that, we need to spend more time in collecting data and information from several users. Due to the time constraints, it will affect the process of constructing in developing mobile application.

5.2 FUTURE SUGGESTIONSSome of future suggestions for our application are this mobile application is expected to be use by the all user in Malaysia and will help the reservation process become more efficient. All the information about the customers and data about vehicles can be keep in mobile application database. User can directly reserve the car just through their smartphones without any difficulty to make a call or reserve by the computer system. This will definitely help the user since the era of technology nowadays has become so modern. So, they can make a booking process efficiently. The reservation process becomes easier and faster using mobile base application. The mobile application develops with Graphical User Interface (GUI) and user friendly which is there are interaction with the user. We really suggest for the future to be continue using this mobile application as a new platform to make it any reservation or information will get immediately.
