FromtheSuper–June2019(page2)(con%nuedfromPage1)lover of steam, he used his growing empire to acquire, restore, and run steam locomotives. He sold the railroad in 2008 and used the proceeds of the sale to build the roundhouse to house his collection. Since his passing a few years ago, the roundhouse and collection has been transformed into a proper museum and attraction open to the public.

After a 5-hour ride from Rochester, we arrived at the roundhouse in the midst of the rolling green hills of Amish country Ohio. The building is spectacular, huge, brick and timber; endless windows giving glimpses of the treasures in the 18 stalls, huge doors on the inner side leading to the 115 foot turntable. We heard the architect who designed it give a talk at the NMRA Convention in Cleveland in 2014. The extensive research and adherence to traditional roundhouse construction methods were impressive.

But even more impressive is the collection of steam locomotives for which the building was constructed. There are about two dozen steam (and one compressed air) locomotives in the collection. These range from three 0-4-0s, to a beautiful Grand Trunk Western Northern, number 6325, a sister to the one I rode behind in 1960. Number 6325 pulled Harry Truman’s campaign train in 1948.

Adjoining the roundhouse is a “back shop” with space and equipment to restore and repair steam locomotives. Among the large machines is a wheel lathe that can turn the largest drivers in the collection, and a “quartering machine.”

For diesel fans there are representatives of Alco, Fairbanks-Morse, EMD and other sources sitting outside.

This roundhouse and its collection is well worth seeing, and now that it is open to the public that becomes much easier than in the past when only prearranged tour groups could visit. You should go! Search Age of Steam Roundhouse to find all about it.
