An early start will have you departing Arkaba at 6:15 heading to Hawker airstrip to
photograph the morning light over Wilpena Pound - the jewel in the crown of the
Ikara-Flinders Ranges. Your full-day air safari will take you over Bunyeroo and
Brachina Gorges, passing Parachilna Gorge tracking north above the open-cut
coal fields of Leigh Creek, the outback township of Maree and into William Creek
for a short stop and aircraft change. Flying over vast cattle country of Anna Creek
Station to the gibber shelf on the Western shoreline of Belt Bay (the lowest point
in Australia), Silcrete Island and some eroded peninsulas that jut out into the salt
bed, Jackboot Bay and then follow the Warburton Groove up to the very northern
end of the wonder that is Kati Thanda-Lake Eyre. Breathtaking aerial
perspectives and an array of colours will astound!
The iconic William Creek Hotel is the venue for lunch before returning via the
Painted Hills. The flight will be conducted at a height low enough to capture the
intricate details of the beautifully eroded shelf that once belonged to the great
inland sea. Catch a glimpse of OzMineral’s largest copper and gold mine,
Prominent Hill before turning around over the famous Dingo Proof Fence to head
back towards William Creek. Changing aircraft for the journey back to Hawker
over Strangeway Mould Springs, Adnamooka opal fields and Lake Torrens.
Richard’s expert guidance and tutelage along the way will ensure you return with
memories and photographs worthy of the epic outback air safari you have just
experienced. Land at Hawker airstrip at 17:30 for the short 20 minute drive back
to the comfort and civilisation of the five-room heritage Arkaba Homestead.

DAY FOUR – THURSDAY 29 AUGUST 2019 BRACHINA GORGE
C A P T U R I N G A R K A B A & K A T I T H A N D A – L A K E E Y R E
This morning you’ll have the opportunity to photograph the morning light as the
outback springs back to life and capture wildlife from Arkaba’s new viewing hide
carefully carved out close to the confluence of Arkaba and Woolshed creeks. The
hide provides an ideal vantage point for all kinds of wildlife coming to drink. Not
only a place to see, but to watch wildlife and photograph all the fascinating
interactions that occur between species.
We venture into the spectacular Brachina Gorge in the Ikara-Flinders Ranges
National Park this afternoon, home to fossils of the unique Ediacaran fauna and
once used as a pass through which bullock teams pulled their loads. The scree
slope on the western side of the gorge provides the perfect opportunity to capture
the beautifully decorated near-threatened Yellow-footed Rock-wallaby endemic to
the region.
We know you will have learned a thing or two from Canon Master Richard
I’Anson. And we know you’ll remember the beauty and scale of the outback
Australian landscape and the knowledge and passion of Arkaba’s field guides
who immerse you in the stories that lie behind it. This is what really makes the
Wild Bush Luxury experience at Arkaba so special. Return to the Arkaba
Homestead and enjoy a farewell celebration dinner before retiring to your
Homestead Guestroom for your final night.
DAY FIVE – FRIDAY 30 AUGUST 2019ARKABA TO ADELAIDE
C A P T U R I N G A R K A B A & K A T I T H A N D A – L A K E E Y R E
Depart Arkaba at 8:30 for your overland transfer to Adelaide through the Clare
Valley wine country. The road to Adelaide is pretty. Very pretty. There’s wide
streetscapes and charming heritage buildings, interesting bric-a-brac stores and
art galleries. The trip takes you through the historic towns of Quorn, Wilmington,
and Mount Remarkable, all famous for their nature filled valleys and riverbeds.
Melrose is cradled at the base of impressive Mount Remarkable, the oldest town
in the Ikara Flinders Ranges and arguably one of the prettiest in Australia. The
pioneering town of Stone Hut began its life as a stagecoach town with Cobb & Co
calling in on its way from Clare to Port Augusta. Today the town includes a
collection of stone cottages mapped out on a heritage walk.
Heading from Melrose into the beautiful Clare Valley, a region world famous for its
wine and specialising in Reisling. You’ll enjoy wine tasting and lunch here.
Continue south through the Adelaide Hills arriving at Adelaide airport at 17:00.
Please arrange your onward flights from 18:00 to allow you time for check-in. If
you are staying on in Adelaide we’d be delighted to drop you to the door of your
Adelaide city hotel.
THE ARKABA HOMESTEAD IS YOUR OASIS OF COMFORT AT THE FOOT OF THE ELDER RANGE
You’ll stay in the comfort of Arkaba's restored homestead, a founding member of Luxury
Lodges of Australia and an exclusive outback experience. Each room has a character of
its own and has been named after early settlers, explorers or property owners. The
décor has been hand-fashioned by wildlife artist, Rosie Woodford-Ganf. Bedheads are
made from recycled fence posts and fleeces, curtains tied back by gumnut tassels,
lights are perched on explorers' tripod theodolites. The Arkaba Homestead retains a
real sense of history and place.
A comfortable library provides some seclusion for enjoying a quiet drink and a good
book, while dinner is often hosted on the terrace overlooking the ranges. A self-service
bar with a comprehensive selection of beverages is available and the resident chef
loves serving you thoughtful bush inspired cuisine after your days out capturing the
beauty of this place. Arkaba’s wine list is entirely South Australian and wines will be
matched with each of your evening meals.
