    Welcome Back!

    January Issue

  • Editors Foreword

After a (far too short) holiday, the Newsletter team is back with a mid-January filler issue to let you know that we are still breathing, writing, taking photos and asking a pile of questions!

This month, we feature our returning CAPTains and exchange students alike - do Say Hi to them when you see them. (A (re)introduction into the wonderful world of midnight supper would go a long way as well.) Additionally, we will be running two features on What CAPTains Did During the Holidays and the resurrected Room Raiders, complete with pictures for the very curious. Do look out for our pretty packed February issue, which covers the various college events - from the Social Action Game to what the various neighbourhoods are up to.

Also, in lieu of the New Year and in spirit of Tumblr, heres a quote from the lovely Neil Gaiman:

    Dear reader-stuck-waiting-for-the-lift:

I hope that in this year to come, you make mistakes. Because if you are making mistakes, then you are making new things, trying new things, learning, living, pushing yourself, changing yourself, changing your world. Youre doing things youve never done before, and more importantly, youre doing something.

If youd like to be a part of this monthly gathering of words, please send your articles, photos, grocery lists, etc. to any friendly member of the Publicity Committee!

  • Welcome Back!

As with every year, I went to the Isaan, (northeastern region of Thailand) last December to volunteer (not voluntour ;) ) as an English teacher with a group of friends. We slaved away our semester not on studying, but to publish a textbook for the children during this trip. The trip was great not because I had a lot of fun, but personally because I tasted firsthand the rich difference between apportioning time for myself, and using it on people and friends that I really care about :)

I spent my December Holidays working as a childcare teacher at the Little Skool House. What made my experience enjoyable and memorable is the constant interaction that I had with many of the adorable children there! Not only did this rewarding experience teach me that a good classroom experience is built on love, laughter and a sense of belonging, but also gave me enormous joy while watching the children play and learn at the same time!

Shaun Ramdas (Tulpar)Wanderlust caught my heart over the winter break and thanks to the college I was able to travel to the amazingly beautiful Indian states of Gujarat and Rajasthan as part of the STEER India 2014 Expedition with a wonderful group of CAPTains. But that was just the start as I spent Christmas travelling all over the mountainous East Malaysian state of Sabah, soaking in the beauty of our Southeast Asian Landscape. I ended off the holidays with essential shopping trips to Batam, Indonesia, and fulfilled my exercise quota for the year by climbing up Gunung Lambak in Johor, before coming back to CAPT refreshed and energized for a new semester. Everyone should grab a friend and travel while were still young!

  • Room Raiders

This month, with permission, weve gotten a look inside Charlenes room. With its minimalistic arrangement and monochrome palette, simplicity is the name of the game. We love the clean, spacious feel of the place and the tiny DIY-ed details, including her string of polaroids and origami paper flowers.

Interestingly, shes also inverted her shelf on its side and slotted it under her bed as a makeshift shoe-rack - an idea wed love to try sometime in the near future.

  • Do your

    readings!

    - Charlton

    (Phoenix)

To fit exercise into a busy schedule, 30 mins of light exercise once every two days would be good, like an easy run or light calisthenics (push ups, sit ups etc). Also, working out prior to dinner would be very good.- Hia Ren (Roc)

Use a hanger to stop your door from slamming when its windy!- Zoe (Dragon)

Exams arent the be all and end all. Academic success is important and can make you happy, but you should never let it define who you are. At the end of the day, you are much more than a piece of paper qualification. - Edwin (Tulpar)

    New Sem, New Tricks!

Sometimes at night, really small bugs will fly in from the window cos of the light and they will land on your bed. Make sure you check before you lie down otherwise youll sleep with bugs!! - Clara (Garuda)
