Adjectives are words that modify nouns.

Descriptive adjectives describe characteristics of nouns.

In Spanish adjectives agree in gender (masculine or feminine) and in number (singular or plural) with the nouns or pronouns they describe.

Soy muy artística, ¿no?

Ella es española.

Él es cómico.

Ellos son honrados.

Ellas son honradas.

Adjectives that end in -o have four possible forms: masculine/feminine, singular/plural.

For example: Honrado (honest, truthful)

Él/Ella es inteligente.

… sentimental.

Ellos/Ellas son inteligentes.

… idealistas.

… sentimentales.

Dictionaries will always give you the masculine singular form of an adjective as the default. Adjectives that end in -e or –ista in the masculine singular form, and most adjectives that end in a consonant, have no gender form – they can only be singular or plural.

To make any adjective plural, add -s to the vowel or -es to the consonant.

• Para la mayoría de los hispanos, la familia es una pequeña comunidad unida por la solidaridad y el cariño (affection).

•El concepto hispano de la familia incluye a los parientes más inmediatos (madre, padre, hijos,hermanos) y también a los abuelos, tíos, primos y numerosos otros parientes.

• En la familia tradicional, especialmente en las zonas rurales, es común tener muchos hijos.

Possessive adjectives

Possessive adjectives agree with the thing possessed or person related, not the possessor.

Susana tiene nuestros libros.

Mis padres y yo vivimos en nuestra casa.

If ownership by su/sus is not clear from context, you may use an alternate form for clarity: de + pronoun or de + person’s name.

Es su carro. o Es el carro de él/ ella/ usted.

Es el carro de ellos/ ellas/ ustedes.

Es el carro de Elena.
