technologies and expert
support from Red Hat
• Achieved greater flexibility
and scalability for agile,
collaborative storage and
cloud use
• Reduced TCO compared to
proprietary solutions
CapitalOnline Data Service Co., Ltd., an international cloud computing service provider,
wanted to establish an OpenStack private cloud to improve its availability, flexibility, and
scalability while controlling storage costs. To achieve these improvements, CapitalOnline
worked with Red Hat Global Professional Services (GPS) to build its cloud environment using
Red Hat OpenStack Platform and Red Hat Ceph Storage. With this new OpenStack private cloud,
CapitalOnline can develop and deploy services faster, as well as use its cloud and hardware
resources more effectively — at lower total cost of ownership (TCO) than with proprietary solutions.

INCREASING DEMAND CREATES CLOUD CHALLENGES
CapitalOnline Data Service Co., Ltd. is an international cloud computing service provider with 14
cloud datacenters around the world. Its offerings — such as its Global Interconnected Cloud (GIC)
platform — help its customers keep pace with the rapid development occuring in digital industries, such
as e-commerce, online video, online education, and big data.
In addition to providing cloud services to external users, CapitalOnline also supports the migration
of internal IT applications to cloud platforms to maximize hardware savings, simplify operations and
maintenance, and support flexible resource use and expansion. As part of this initiative, CapitalOnline
has laid a foundation for internal integration into the GIC system and future public cloud services.
“As a global cloud integration expert, we have two objectives: provide our customers with their own
global private network and meet our own growth and business requirements,” said Zheng Yi,
vice president of CapitalOnline.
However, when attempting to migrate internal IT applications to its private cloud, CapitalOnline
discovered serious business challenges associated with building internal private clouds. The company’s
office automation (OA), mail, and business intelligence (BI) solutions — as well as planned key business
applications — needed a cloud platform with high availability, flexibility, and scalability.
Another critical challenge for the company was balancing cloud platform performance and storage
costs. As a result of rapid business growth, CapitalOnline needed to store and process an increasing
amount of data. With its traditional hardware environment — based on Hitachi CB500 servers and
VMware virtualization — meeting the demands of projected business growth for the next three to five
years would require significant investments in new hardware, as well as operation and maintenance.
After careful analysis, CapitalOnline decided to adopt an ‘as-a-Service’ storage approach to establish a
flexible, scalable architecture to meet its business development needs and reduce the TCO.
BUILDING A PRIVATE CLOUD WITH ENTERPRISE TECHNOLOGY AND SUPPORT
To adopt this approach, CapitalOnline decided to use OpenStack. “There were several reasons for
setting up a OpenStack private cloud,” said Zheng Yi. “We wanted a highly efficient and flexible cloud
environment that would help us optimize our infrastructure hardware resources and reduce our costs.
We also needed software-defined networking (SDN) for our cloud services.”
After deciding to use OpenStack, the company quickly turned to Red Hat for effective technology.
“Red Hat is known as the world’s leading open source solution provider, and has continuously advanced
into the field of cloud computing in the past few years,” said Zheng Yi. “Its impressive technical
standard makes it the world leader. We also chose to work with Red Hat because they can provide us
with the best technical support.”
Working with Red Hat Global Professional Services (GPS), CapitalOnline decided to deploy Red Hat
OpenStack Platform and Red Hat Ceph Storage. The company used Red Hat OpenStack Platform
to build its new environment, including installing OpenStack services — such as Nova, Neutron, and
Cinder — to ensure high service availability. This enterprise OpenStack platform is co-engineered with
Red Hat Enterprise Linux to ensure critical integration between OpenStack and Linux technology.

In addition, CapitalOnline implemented Red Hat Ceph Storage, a unified storage platform and powerful object storage solution that is tightly integrated with Red Hat OpenStack Platform. Its software-defined object and file storage architecture offers necessary, cost-effective hardware flexibility and massive scalability.
“The success of this project not only demonstrates the strength of our technical team but also showcases the innovation of internet companies in deploying open source private clouds,” said Zheng Yi.
During implementation and migration, CapitalOnline worked closely with Red Hat GPS to ensure success.
“OpenStack relies on many components, and the configuration is also relatively complex,” said Zheng Yi. “Red Hat’s support staff helped plan and build the solution, and they were responsible for deploying Red Hat OpenStack Platform and resolving any technical difficulties. Without Red Hat’s GPS engineers, the overall deployment would have been more expensive and greatly delayed.”
CLOUD PLATFORM IMPROVES BUSINESS AGILITY AND COSTS
FASTER DEVELOPMENT AND DEPLOYMENT
During the initial testing phases of its Red Hat deployment, CapitalOnline took advantage of Red Hat’s
distributed continuous integration (DCI) program, a collaborative approach that allows key partners
to test and prepare for new Red Hat OpenStack Platform releases. By collaborating with Red Hat prior
to the new release, CapitalOnline significantly shortened development and testing time and sped up
deployment of its new cloud platform.
In addition, deploying Red Hat’s OpenStack and cloud technology helped CapitalOnline further speed
its development processes. Red Hat OpenStack Platform provides the key dependencies — such as
service capabilities, third-party drivers, system performance, and security — that CapitalOnline needs
for its OpenStack production environment. With this integrated, streamlined cloud environment,
CapitalOnline can build and launch services faster, both internally and for customers.
GREATER FLEXIBILITY AND SCALABILITY
With its highly flexible back-end cloud environment based on open source technology, CapitalOnline
has not only enhanced its collaborative office capabilities, but also improved work efficiency.
“Red Hat Ceph Storage enables users to choose their own storage product suppliers without the need
for dedicated technology,” said Zheng Yi. “Resources can be flexibly allocated for R&D and testing as
needed. This agility ensures that our new businesses and applications can be rolled out quickly.”
The new cloud environment also helps CapitalOnline scale as needed to meet demand. Red Hat Ceph
Storage uses in-depth integration with modular architectures and components for effective temporary
and permanent storage. Using this product and distributed block devices, CapitalOnline can scale its
storage capacity and performance based on business needs.
LOWER TOTAL COST OF OWNERSHIP
By building its new cloud environment with Red Hat’s enterprise open source technologies,
CapitalOnline has significantly reduced the TCO for both the company and its customers.

“OpenStack, especially with software-defined Red Hat Ceph Storage and open source SDN, helped us
to reduce the cost for our customers, compared to using proprietary enterprise software, by more
than 50%,” said Zheng Yi.
In addition, Red Hat’s software solutions help the company optimize its hardware use to control related
costs. “We can maximize the use of our infrastructure hardware resources to reduce hardware costs,
as well as operational and maintenance costs,” said Zheng Yi.
PLATFORM SUCCESS BUILDS FOUNDATION FOR FUTURE PRIVATE CLOUD INNOVATION
Through its collaboration with Red Hat, CapitalOnline has created a highly flexible cloud environment
and gained valuable experience in creating a global cloud platform for expanding its services in the
future. This new environment creates a solid foundation for internal integration into its GIC system and
future public cloud services.
“Red Hat has not only met our performance and agility requirements, but the technical skills of
Red Hat’s field engineers, and their close cooperation with Red Hat’s after-sales engineers,
were outstanding,” said Zheng Yi. “We firmly believe that Red Hat is an excellent partner.”
