CAPVA Oratorical Contest andJunior Golf in May

If you have never been to a District-level Oratorical Contest, now is the time to register and come to the Third Quarter District Conference/Meeting May 3-5 in Richmond. The youth that participate in this contest are incredible, and it is worth the trip.

A registration form is on page xxx of this newsletter and on the District Website at [email protected]. Forms have already been sent to Club Presidents, Secretary-Treasures and Lt. Governors. Governor Chester requests you let him know if anyone is not receiving information through these leaders. First Timers from all Clubs (those who have never been to a District meeting) and prospective members are especially encouraged to come and meet others in our Optimist family, and learn about what other clubs are doing to Bring Out the Best in our Youth, our communities and ourselves.

Governor’s MessageHello Optimists!

We held our Second Quarter District meeting in Fredericksburg, VA at the Hilton Garden. If you were not there you missed a great time with lots of information from the Lt. Governor’s, Club Presidents reports and OI Foundation representative.

We updated our Capital Virginia District Policies to be in compliant with Optimist International Policies.

Another change that took place was the rezoning committee report. Due to new clubs that have been added and another club that disbanded, some clubs were moved to other zones in order to accommodate the Lt. Governors who will be elected in May at the Third Quarter District Conference. These Lt. Governors will serve in the 2019-2020 year.

Following lunch Leadership Chair, Dave Griffiths, held a Q&A session and District Web Site Chair, Jeff Taylor held a Tutorial on effective use of the District & International websites and the importance of social media. Both of them did an outstanding job. JB Young did an awesome job as Membership in his $100.00 costume and awarded clubs for adding members. Thanks to all who participated this quarter.

We look forward to our Third Quarter Conference to be held in Richmond on May 3-5 where will conduct our District Oratorical Contest. The deadline to reserve hotel rooms and register to attend is April 5, 2019. A registration form is provided, so please don't wait until the last minute or it may cost you more. Most of all you don’t want to miss the students who will be giving their oratorical speeches following lunch.

This weekend is also the Kentucky Derby. Our theme "RUN FOR THE ROSES" is in honor of our 100th Optimist International Convention, which is being held in Louisville, KY. home of the Kentucky Derby from June 30, through July 3, 2019. As always, we try to incorporate some FUN along with the food and fellowship. Following the, Oratorical Contest on Saturday 2-4 PM, we will meet in our Hospitality Room for some "Horse Fun" to cheer on our favorite horse in the “Derby” before going to dinner where there may be more "Horsing Around".

Looking forward to a great weekend, May 3-5 in Richmond, and don't forget our District Jr. World Golf Tournament is that Sunday afternoon,  at the Hanover Country Club. Tee Time is 10:30 AM. This is full weekend, however it is what we do for the YOUTH.

Thank you all for everything you do everyday to “Bring out the Best in the Youth, your Community and Yourself”

Remember: “Promise Yourself” “Promise the Youth” and “Keep Your Promise”Optimistically Yours,

Chester L. Grizzard Governor 2018-2019 Capital Virginia District 16

News from the Clubs

Zone 4 Lt. Gov. Art Jones

Alexandria Pres. Ruth WoodsLewis Stearman, 95, the last surviving charter member of the Optimist Club of Alexandria, died March 4th.  Lew and 39 others founded the Club in 1946, and he was Optimist of the Year in 2008.

At the January 23 luncheon meeting we honored a boy from Yemen and a girl from Colombia who are recent arrivals to the U. S. and are working on their English proficiency while taking the courses necessary to graduate from high school.

At the February 13th luncheon meeting, 3 Alexandria middle school orchestra students joined Optimists, parents, faculty and other guests for lunch.  After the meal, each student performed for us.  The outstanding performances by 2 violinists and 1 cellist were wonderful additions to our early Valentine’s Day celebration.

Five of the Optimist Club Essay Contest finalists attended the February 27 luncheon meeting of the Optimist Club of Alexandria.  Several parents beamed as they heard their children (or grandchildren) read their essays.

At the March 13th luncheon meeting we honored outstanding choral students from the four Alexandria public middle schools.

At the March 27 luncheon meeting of the Optimist Club of Alexandria, members and guests welcomed Alexandria children from two groups—the Untouchables and the Jefferson Houston school math club (sponsored by Optimist Susan Birnie).   The Untouchables performed their club’s rap and talked about the activities that keep the kids off the street and out of trouble.  The sixth, seventh and eighth grade math club members showed us how they solved math problems.  One problem involved a group of ostriches and llamas with a combined total of 47 heads and 122 legs.  Can you figure out how many ostriches and how many llamas there are?  The math club members knew how to solve the problem!

Presidents should send a copy of their Club’s activity report that is routinely given at District meetings to their Lieutenant Governor, the Governor, and District Newsletter Editor (at [email protected]).

The Optimist Creed

Promise Yourself -- -To be so strong that nothing can disturb your peace of mind. -To talk health, happiness, and prosperity to every person you meet. -To make all your friends feel that there is something in them. -To look at the sunny side of everything and make your optimism come true. -To think only of the best, to work only for the best, and to expect only the best. -To be just as enthusiastic about the success of others as you are about your own. -To forget the mistakes of the past and press on to the greater achievements of the future. -To wear a cheerful countenance at all times and give every living creature you meet a smile. -To give so much time to the improvement of yourself that you have no time to criticize others. -To be too large for worry, too noble for anger, too strong for fear, and too happy to permit the presence of trouble.
