Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What will happen to West Gastonia without the

YMCA?

A: We considered the impact to the community before

deciding to move out of West Gastonia. The YMCA

has partnered with several agencies to better serve

kids, adults, and families.

Q: Who are your partners to serve West Gastonia?

A: Our partners include—Boys and Girls Club, City of

Gastonia, Sheriff's Department, Gastonia Police

Department, Alliance for Children and Youth, Boy

Scouts, Girl Scouts, and the Faith community

Q: What programs and services will you provide?

A: We have surveyed community members and they have

asked for programs for children, individuals, families,

and seniors. These include Financial Wellness class,

NetworX and NetworX Youth small groups, and

Resource Connection Gateway online referral ser-

vices.

Q: What will the kids who walk to the Central Y do

without the Y there?

A: The YMCA conducted a usage study and found that

there were 35 people under the age of 16 currently

walking to the YMCA. Our move will certainly affect

this population.

Q: Will people in West Gastonia have access to the new

YMCA?

A: Yes. The new location is only 4.6 miles away from the

Central YMCA. Y Leadership has begun conversations

with the City of Gastonia asking them to consider a

bus stop at or near the new location.

Q: The Afterschool and Summer Camp site at the Central

YMCA is licensed to accept vouchers. Will this be

available at the New YMCA?

A: No. There will not be a licensed childcare at the New

YMCA. We are working with Gaston County Schools

to offer a site at the new Pleasant Ridge Elementary

School that will act as a licensed childcare center for

Afterschool and Summer Camp. Children in these

programs will be transported for field trips to the

Robinwood Lake site to enjoy the activities such as

swimming, boating, fishing, and hiking.

Q: Is there Financial Assistance?

A: Yes. The New YMCA, like our current facility, will be

accessible to anyone who wants to be a part of the

Y. We turn no one away due to the inability to pay.

Q: What is the YMCA Aquatics Center?

A: The YMCA Aquatics Center is a two pool design at the

new Y that includes a 25 yard cool water lap pool

and a large warm water recreational pool.

Q: How will the Lap Pool be utilized?

A: The cool water pool will be utilized for lap swimming,

water exercise, lifeguard classes, water walking,

YMCA Swim Club, and Swim Teams (Gaston County

Schools and YMCA Summer Swim Team). Our pool

temperature will be set at 82 degrees.

Q: How will the Recreational Pool be utilized?

A: The recreational pool will be our warm water pool and

we will use it for family swim, water exercise, swim

lessons, water walking and water therapy. It will

feature a zero depth spray feature on the deck. Our

Recreational Pool will be set at 86 degrees.

Q: Who will have access to Robinwood Lake?

A: The YMCA owns Robinwood Lake and will limit access

to Members and program participants during

specified times.

Q: What type of boats will be in your fleet?

A: We will have canoes, stand up paddle boards, fishing

boats, and kayaks that will be checked out from the

Boathouse. The fishing boats will have an electric

trolling motor or will be manually paddled with oars.

Coastguard approved personal floatation device

must be worn while on the water.

Q: Can I bring my own boat?

A: Should the YMCA allow personal boats on the lake

they will have to be treated with an EPA fungicide

and herbicide onsite that will keep invasive species

from entering our lake. Boating will only be allowed

during scheduled hours and monitored by the

Boathouse staff.
