To Parents and Caregivers, The Parish of Saints Peter and Paul Bulimba is embarking on its biggest fundraising effort since our church was built in 1926. The church restoration project “Honouring the Past and Giving to the Future” is just as important and vital to our parish as the visionary project that built our church 90 years ago. The church restoration is about positioning the parish community for the future by providing a beautiful sacred building for celebrating the liturgy.

The need is real. The church has not had any significant maintenance done for a long time. The work required has been professionally assessed and estimated. The work required has been clearly outlined at weekend Masses recently and is well documented. You can locate the Maintenance Report on the Bulimba parish website

for more information on the repairs required.

We, the parishioners of Saints Peter and Paul, are responsible for maintaining our church and we have the obligation to finance this restoration. We pay levies to the Archdiocese to cover diocesan costs: the Archdiocese does not and cannot subsidise parish church buildings.

A special event has been arranged for 23 August 2014 to allow all people who love and support our church to hear about the project and to make a commitment to support the work that needs to be done. This event is also a joyous celebration of who we are as a parish community because it is not just about bricks and mortar. Invitations have been distributed in our newsletters and are available via the parish website and the campaign Facebook page.

We need all parishioners to support this campaign – just as our founding families supported the building of this church. If you cannot come on the evening of 23 August, we are asking you to make a commitment beforehand so that we can include your contribution on the night. Please consider making a pledge for three years – monthly, quarterly or annually. A pledge form is available at the parish office.

The campaign has the full support and endorsement of the National Trust of Queensland which means your contribution can be Tax Deductable. The campaign also has the full support and endorsement of the Archbishop.

If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact the Parish Office (3399 2386 or [email protected]) Monday to Friday from 8.30 am till 12 noon.

Kindest regards

APRE News – Mr Brendan Schostakowski

FEAST OF THE ASSUMPTION FRIDAY 15 AUGUST The Feast of the Assumption commemorates the death of Mary and her bodily assumption into Heaven - a foretaste of our own resurrection. The Assumption is a very old feast of the Church and was originally celebrated in the East where it is known as the Feast of the Dormition, a word which means "the falling asleep." The earliest printed reference to the belief that Mary's body was assumed into Heaven dates from the fourth century, in a document entitled "The Falling Asleep of the Holy Mother of God." While the when and the how of Mary’s assumption is utterly a mystery, there is no doubt that the reason for her assumption is ultimately a matter of love, God’s gracious love in response to Mary’s faithfulness. In Mary we see an ordinary woman who becomes extraordinary by virtue of her faith in what God makes possible in her life.

Mother of God, Mother of the Church, Mother of Jesus, Mother of all We honour and praise you

Mary most faithful, Mary most loving, Mary most gentle, Mary most kind Teach us to be like you

Woman of strength, Woman of goodness, Woman of justice, Woman of compassion

Show us the way

As the Feast of the Assumption is a Holy Day of Obligation Mass will be celebrated on Thursday evening 14 August at 7pm, and Friday morning 15 August at 8am.

FAITH – A REFLECTION ON THE GOSPEL FOR THE 20th

SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME In this Sunday’s Gospel for the 20

th Sunday in Ordinary Time (Matthew 15:21-28), a Canaanite woman called to Jesus, “Son of

David, have mercy on me! My daughter is sick.” At first Jesus was reluctant to cure the woman’s daughter but her faith touched his heart. The woman believed in Jesus and would not give up even when Jesus tried to turn her away. Her faith was so persistent. Many people lose faith in God when things go badly in their life. Sometimes they even blame him. Jesus does not promise that we wi ll never suffer if we believe in him, only that we will never suffer alone. He promises to walk beside us even in the darkest hour. Lord Jesus, when we turn away from you, help us to remember that you walk with us. Amen. Wishing you God’s blessings for the coming week. Brendan

APA News...Mr Damien Sullivan

Sick Children As mentioned in last week’s newsletter, we have over the past few weeks, had an unusually high number of students away with colds, the flu and tummy bugs. When children are presenting with symptoms of these sicknesses at school they are sent to the school office and a phone call is made to parents to make arrangements for the student to go home. With some nasty viruses and tummy bugs around it is very important that parents keep their children at home if they are sick. Even runny noses, mildly sore throats and upset stomachs at the moment can be symptoms of something that may be more serious and spread to other children. Thanks for your cooperation with this. Correct School Uniform - Shoes During Semester 1 students have been doing a great job wearing appropriate shoes to school that are following our School Uniform policy. Shoes worn with the normal school uniform are expected to be black. Those shoes that highlight any additional colours such as fluorescent green or red stripes are not following the uniform standards for the school. On days when the sports uniform is worn students should wear sports shoes that are predominantly white. We ask that as parents are ready to purchase new school shoes for their children that they ensure to keep this policy in mind. Should your child not be able to wear the correct uniform it would be appreciated if a note could be sent to school with your child. Wrist Bands/Jewellery Parents and students should also remember that the only jewellery items that are permitted for school are watches, neck chains with a religious pendant and studs or sleepers for pierced ears. Rubber wrist bands are not acceptable. Safe and Considerate Parking To help with traffic flow around the school, it is particularly important that parents refrain from parking too close to intersections around the school. In most cases yellow lines clearly mark these as no stopping areas. Parking too close to corners makes it dangerous for our school families trying to cross the road and makes things difficult for drivers turning at the surrounding intersections. We also ask drivers to please be considerate of our neighbours. At no point should cars stop to load/unload children or park in the driveways of our school neighbours. Local police check the parking around schools on a regular basis to help keep it safe. Riding to School To help keep everybody safe at school we have rules that bikes, scooters and skateboards must not be ridden in the school grounds or on the footpaths that surround the school. These areas before and after school are very busy places. Children should also be wearing a helmet. We ask that any parents of children who ride to school reinforce this message from home and that any parents who also ride respect these rules too. Bee Champions Congratulations to Sofia (3B), Demitri (2Y), Madalena (6G) and Caren (3G) who were drawn out of the box as Bee Champions at our last assembly. They have been helping our school to be a happy and safe place for students. Have a great week, Damien Sullivan

New Lanyards

When signing the Visitors Register at the school office there are now lanyards available to put your slip in so that staff and students are aware that visitors are registered to be on the school grounds. Please return the lanyard to the school office when signing out.
