    Makingthe Capelet:

    1. Cuta square of fabric that is the

same length and width as the elbow

to elbow measurement. Lay it out

with the right side (the side that

will be on the outside) facing up.

    2. Fold the square in half. Pin the

    layers together near the corners.

    3. Fold the folded piece in half

widthwise. Stick a pin through both

layers at the position of the fold.

    This will mark your midpoint.

    4. Unfold, keeping the layers pinned

    together.

    5. Tie a ribbon around the fabric

marker, close to the tip. Hold the

tip of the marker at one corner of

the folded edge. Lay the ribbon out

flat along the edge. Pin the ribbon

to the fabric at the midpoint.

Keeping the ribbon taught, draw a

    semicircle with the marker.

    6. Cut out the neckline template in the

    appropriate size. Align the

template with the pin and the folded

edge of the fabric as indicated.

    7. Trace around the template with a

    fabric marker.

    8. Place a plate on the fabric so that

the edge is touching the neckline

    marking and the folded edge.Note:

a small plate makes a sharpercurveand alarge plate makes

    a gentler curve.

    9. Trace around the edge of the plate

    between the neckline marking and

    the folded edge.

    10. Repeat the curve marking process

at the corner on the right hand side.

    11. Use scissors to cut a slit at the

position of the fold. Stop cutting

    when you reach the pin.

    12. Cut through both layers at the neck

opening line, veering off into thecurve to meet the slit edges.

    13. Cut through both layers at the

    outside semicircle line, veering off

into the curve to meet the slit

    edges.

    14. Unfold the fabric.

    15. Trim the fabric. Ideas for trim

    include:

If it is a non fray fabric, you

cansew trim to the top side

. Ric Rack is a good trim

    choice.

Cover the raw edge with bias

    tape.

Create a rolled hem with a

    serger.

    16. Fold the trimmed piece in half atthe shoulder edges, with right

    sides together.

    Note:Steps 16 20 are optional. These

steps will create a more tailored look to

your capelet, but if you are using a fabric

that lies nicely, it may not be necessary.

    17. Using the marker, make dots 2

over and 1 down from the outside

    corners.

18.Measure over the length of the

shoulder measurement (taken instep #4) from the inside neck edges.

Make a mark at this position on

    each side.

    19. Using a straight edge, connect the

    dots.

    Stitch over the markings,

backstitching at the beginning andend of each line of stitching.

    20. Options for closures include:

Hook & eye (Use a decorative button

on the outside to cover any stitches

    from the hook/eye.)

    Ribbon closure

    Toggle or Claspclosure

    Button closure

Button Closure Basicsfor a NonFray Fabric:

Cut from your fabric a piece that is 4

inches long by 2 inches tall. Trim one

short end into a curve. Cut down the

center about 3 inches and then cut out

a small circle. This will be where

your button slips in and holds.

    Mark approximately 1 inches

inward at the center top for placement

of the tab. Stitch the tab down on the

opposite side of the curve. Sew on a

large button for the other side. Button

    the tab down.
