CAPE PENINSULASouth Africa

In 1580, Sir Frances Drake, the great Englishnavigator, described the Cape of Good Hope asthe “fairest cape ... in the whole circumferenceof the earth.” Blessed with a dramatic beauty, the peninsula is a part of the Cape Floral Region, which is considered to have the most diverse range of plant life in the world. Visitorsare likely to see plenty of wildlife, especiallychacma baboons. At Cape Point, ascend one ofthe world’s highest sea cliffs by funicular to admire stunning panoramic coastal views.

JOHANNESBURGSouth Africa

If tranquil Cape Town is thecountry’s oldest and most

genteel city, Johannesburg isits rambunctious little brother.

In 1886, the discovery of a huge lode of gold triggered a gold rush. Today, Joburg is the country’s financial center, and many peoplecome here to enjoy the fast-paced lifestyle.

CAPE TOWNSouth Africa

Sheltered by Table Mountain, South Africa’sMother City is one of the world’s most beautifulcities. Centuries-old Cape Dutch houses andcolorful gardens dot the cityscape. A bustlingwaterfront welcomes visitors with inviting cafésand boutiques set amid workaday harbor life. Tothe south, the Atlantic seaboard gives way to ascenic coastline with dramatic views.

ROBBEN ISLANDSouth Africa

Within sight of Cape Town, but effectively aworld away, Robben Island was home to aprison that held Nelson Mandela and other political dissidents. Despite poor conditions, prisoners organized debates and educationaland sporting activities. From their remoteprison, these prisoners helped draw attentionto the injustices of apartheid. Today, formerprisoners lead insightful tours of the prison.

From Prisoner to President“What counts in life is not the mere fact that wehave lived. It is what difference we have made tothe lives of others that will determine the signifi-cance of the life we lead.” ~ Nelson Mandela

Activist. Freedom fighter. Prisoner. President.Nelson Mandela, who died in 2013 at the age of95, was this and more to millions of peoplearound the world. Jailed for 27 years during SouthAfrica’s apartheid era, Mandela emerged from imprisonment in 1990 as the government begandismantling the apartheid machine. Four yearslater, Mandela was elected the first president of anew, democratic South Africa. The story of his incredible journey was introduced to a new generation of admirers in late 2013, when theman whom millions called “Tata,” father in hisnative isiXhosa language, died.

The Safari Experience

SOWETOSouth Africa

Soweto, an abbreviation for South WesternTownships, is no longer just a collection of shantytowns built to house black mine workersaway from the center of Johannesburg. It is athriving community proud of its role in endingthe oppression of apartheid, and it producedtwo Nobel Peace Prize laureates: NelsonMandela and Desmond Tutu.Squatter camps stillexist, but thesecamps slowly aredisappearing asmore affordablehousing is built. With a brave spirit, the residents ofSoweto are embracingboth new opportunities and challenges presented to them.

In the not-so-distant past, a safari was synonymous with hunters stalking herds of biggame that roamed the African plains. Today, mosthunters are armed with cameras instead of guns.Their trophies? Images of Africa’s incomparablewildlife.

Each day unfolds with discoveries of nature’sgrandeur on the wild continent. Awaken to thearoma of freshly brewed coffee as your expertdriver prepares his vehicle for your early morninggame drive. Set off in pursuit of exotic animalsand birds in their natural habitat and see thedrama of their day-to-day struggle for survival.

Return to the lodge for a hearty English breakfast and share your morning encounterswith fellow travelers. After lunch, there is time to take a dip in the pool or treat yourself to amassage at the spa. Tea is served before your afternoon game drive.

As the sun completes its sojourn across thesky, return to the lodge for a relaxing evening. After a dinner of delicious international and localcuisine, gather around the fireplace to trade talesand tally your Big Five sightings. By day’s end, you’ll have collected many photographs andthrilling memories of your very own safari.
