THIS YEAR WE HAVE THE PRIVILEGE OF WELCOMING YOU ALL TO OUR 42ND CAPE TOWN CYCLE TOUR. We hope that as riders, you will have a splendid day out on your bike; and as visitors, you will enjoy the beauty that Cape Town has to offer.

What started out as a demonstration ride so many years ago, to raise awareness about the lack of cycling infrastructure and safety for cyclists, has evolved into a world-class event, and still holds the record for being the largest timed sporting event in the world.

I recall my first Tour, way back when, nervously approaching the huge crowd of happy cyclists on the Foreshore and thinking how stupid I was to enter an event in which I would spend five hours in the saddle. The gees of these mad cyclists, and the music – and the announcer shouting, “HOOOOPLA!” – soon got me into the cyclist vibe, and off I went.

Not having trained, I had vowed that I would pull out of the ride shortly after the start. But in the end, I never did – the spectators and my fellow cyclists just kept me going. After having to stop five times because of cramps, I finally finished; and I continue to return every year for my annual thrill.

The Magic of a Lekker Ride!

Favourite Part Of The Route:

Edinburgh Hill. The cheering and encouragement from

the spectators, and the smell of cooking bacon.

When in Cape Town… go to Hout Bay harbour for a traditional snoek and chips

wrapped in newspaper.

For more information on how we are building our communities, go to www.pnp.co.za/peoplenplanet.

The Velokhaya Life Cycling Academy, based in Khayelitsha, uses cycling to help change children’s lives for the better. Cycling offers a constructive after-school activity which, combined with our education and life skills programme, supports these youth so they can become champions both on and off their bicycles.

Since 2004, over 1 000 young people have been assisted through the programme, with some going on to become professional cyclists.

Our support doesn’t stop at the finish line.

THE WORLD-RENOWNED CAPE TOWN CYCLE TOUR CELEBRATES ITS 42ND EDITION IN 2020, AND

ONCE AGAIN THE CITY OF CAPE TOWN IS PROUD TO HOST THIS ICONIC RACE.

The world’s largest timed cycle race offers thousands of cyclists stunning scenery and a fun and challenging course. My favourite memory, which often comes to mind when thinking about the Cape Town Cycle Tour, is the thousands of participants at the starting line, preparing to tackle this challenging but beautiful route.

It takes discipline and perseverance to prepare for this race, and the rewards are many – from achieving your best time, to enjoying the ride, to getting an energy boost from the thousands of

enthusiastic supporters cheering on the riders over those gruelling hills.

It’s always a pleasure to welcome cyclists from other parts of South Africa, the continent and the world to our friendly and welcoming city. The event contributes immensely to the city’s economy, and to job creation, which is greatly appreciated by the residents of Cape Town.

I want to take this opportunity to wish the 35 000 cyclists a safe and triumphant race; to wish the organisers a successful event; and to hope that both local and international spectators will thoroughly enjoy one of the most beautiful races in the world.

While you’re here, don’t forget to sample our local cuisine. It will have you saying one of my regular phrases: “My magtig!” (Oh my goodness!)

On behalf of the City of Cape Town, I’m pleased to welcome you all to Africa’s leading festival and event destination.

PICK N PAY WOULD LIKE TO EXTEND OUR WARMEST WELCOME TO CAPE TOWN, THE MOTHER CITY OF

SOUTH AFRICA AND ONE OF THE MOST BEAUTIFUL CITIES ON THE PLANET. It’s with great pleasure that we’re once again able to be a proud sponsor of one of the world’s most iconic cycling events: the Cape Town Cycle Tour.

A special welcome to the cyclists who have sacrificed many hours to reach this point, with many travelling great distances to get here. We trust that this dedication and commitment will be rewarded by the joy of participation in what has become the largest timed cycle race in the world.

Pick n Pay would also like to acknowledge everyone’s contributions, and especially to thank all of you riders who will be cycling for charities on the day: our sincerest, most heartfelt thanks once again for your support. We will be with you all the way on

race day, ensuring the Cape Town Cycle Tour 2020 is a most memorable one.

To all the dedicated supporters who stand along the roadside for hours on end, often in the scorching sun and unforgiving wind: thank you for your cheering, and for never letting our cyclists down – they couldn’t do it without you!

On race day we also rely on hundreds of service providers and volunteers behind the scenes who work tirelessly to make sure the cyclists get to the start; our sincerest thanks to them for their ongoing support and commitment.

As always, I’m sure you will join me in thanking the City of City of Cape Town for providing one of the finest venues in the world.

Wishing you all the best for a safe, enjoyable and wind-free ride. If you see me on the road, please give me a little bit of encouragement!

I WOULD LIKE TO WELCOME ALL THE PARTICIPANTS IN THE 42ND EDITION OF THE CAPE

TOWN CYCLE TOUR TO OUR BEAUTIFUL PROVINCE. WE ARE INCREDIBLY PROUD TO HOST THIS PRESTIGIOUS EVENT, WHICH PLAYS AN IMPORTANT ROLE IN SUPPORTING OUR PROVINCIAL ECONOMY, TOURISM, AND LOCAL COMMUNITIES ALONG THE ROUTE.

I remember my first Cape Town Cycle Tour – which was 25 years ago, in 1988. I had just opened a bicycle shop in Knysna, and was an enthusiastic recreational cyclist.

I completed the race in 3 hours and 22 minutes. I was clearly much fitter than I am today! I remember

being astounded by the beauty of our coastline, and the warmth of the supporters cheering us on. Since then, I have had the pleasure of completing 11 races, with this year being my twelfth.

My favourite part of the race is the cheering from supporters on Wynberg Hill, up Suikerbossie in Hout Bay, and at the finish line. Despite my surname suggesting otherwise, those years in which we had little to no wind from the front were also beneficial!

I also encourage those visiting Cape Town for the race to stay longer – or come back, with their families – to enjoy our exquisite wine farms, our scenic hiking trails, and to support our local markets and heritage sites.

I would like to wish everyone participating in the race all the very best – the professional team at the Cycle Tour will no doubt ensure that you have a wonderful race. See you at the start line!

I REMEMBER, AS A NEWLY-SETTLED CAPETONIAN IN THE 80S, THE EXCITEMENT AROUND EVERY CTCT.

In particular, I fondly remember my colleagues – at

what was my first real job – encouraging me to become better acquainted with the Mother City as a spectator of the tour. Every year thereafter, for 10 consecutive years, we supported participating riders at different points on the route.

The camaraderie and breathtakingly spectacular views are still etched in my memory.

In many ways, my first experiences with the CTCT manifested the immense power sport has to bring diverse groups of people together, while motivating healthier lifestyles and promoting Cape Town and the greater Western Cape as the national sporting destination of South Africa.

I encourage entrants to enjoy the race; but more importantly, I wish them well in their final preparations for the day. As Liane Cardes reminds us: “Continuous effort, not strength or intelligence, is key to unlocking our potential.”

My favourite part of the route is probably the starting line. It is here that one experiences first-hand the energy of the participants, while feeding off the supporters’ excited anticipation in the early hours of what is often a crisp Cape Town morning.

And remember – when in Cape Town, be sure to try a full-house Gatsby from Golden Dish in Athlone. Great for carbo-loading!

BEST MEMORY I recall media coverage of the Cycle Tour, and being awed by how fit and brilliantly athletic these riders must be to complete such a distance in such a short time.

FAVOURITE PART OF THE ROUTE Definitely Hout Bay, where I live! It’s a beautiful suburb, with great coffee and restaurant stops for the spectators – especially those wanting to witness the cyclists take on the most daunting part of the event: Suikerbossie!

WHEN IN CAPE TOWN… kayak around the coast from Three Anchor Bay, have a vegan Gatsby at Lekker Vegan in Gardens, and take a paragliding flight from Signal Hill.

SPEAK LIIKE A CAPETONIANAs I worked for a while in Malaysia, there is a beautiful part of Cape Town’s heritage that is close to my heart, namely the term ‘Terimah kasih’, which is Malay for ‘Thank you’. In Cape Town it’s generally pronounced ‘Tramma kassie’, though it has become increasingly rare to hear it here.

But it’s a part of Cape Town’s Malay history

and heritage that I hope will not disappear, and I encourage people to use it when saying ‘thank you’. It’s not something you will hear anywhere else in SA!

8 Race-DayEssentials

SUNSCREENBurnt skin is not just a problem the following day (or later in life); it can also hasten the effects of heatstroke and exhaustion on race day itself, if it’s a scorcher. A decent sports factor 50 will protect you, and keep you cool. It isn’t just about the ride, either – it’s always baking at the finish-line carnival.

Rushing to get ready for the Cycle Tour, it’s all a bit of a blur – especially for the front half of the field, who are dressing in the dark. Here’s our forget-nothing snag list, to get you started on the right foot.

ListYou will NOT be allowed into

your start chute without these four items. If you’ve messed up, don’t give

the aunties and uncles volunteering at sparrows’ a hard time about it.

DRINK SPARINGLY. . .OFTEN!You need to be taking in about 500ml an hour – two-thirds of a big bottle. But please – don’t get to the end of the first hour dry, and then down it all in one go, or your stomach will go on strike. Small sips every few minutes is kinder to the plumbing. Take a 500ml Powerade with you to the start – over and above your on-bike quota – and drain it in the half hour before your group sets off. It’ll kick-start your hydration, and the sugary boost will make you feel invincible up Nelson Mandela Boulevard.

GET THERE EARLYYou’re going to wait for ages anyway, so an extra few minutes won’t matter. And if it gets you to the front of the group for the off, you’ll be safer than when you have to run the gauntlet of 999 other attempts to clip in under pressure.

Page 8: CAPE TOWN CYCLE TOUR EVENT GUIDE...THE WORLD-RENOWNED CAPE TOWN CYCLE TOUR CELEBRATES ITS 42ND EDITION IN 2020, AND ONCE AGAIN THE CITY OF CAPE TOWN IS PROUD TO HOST THIS …

R A C E - R E A D YR A C E - R E A D Y 3 Things You Didn’t Know You NeededPaper Padding: It can be chilly in the start chutes, but you don’t want to carry a jacket all the way round the Peninsula. Solution: a newspaper – like the pros still do in the Grand Tours – is perfect for keeping your body warm. Plus it’s less damaging to the environment than a plastic bin liner.

Something Savoury: Sickly sweet is the order of the day, as we ingest more sugar than an eight-year-old at a birthday party. Pack a small amount of biltong or droëwors, too – or anything savoury and salty – to give your poor taste buds a break.

A Saturday Spin: It’s a good idea to loosen up ahead of the big day, as long as you don’t overdo it – say, an easy ride along the coastal road f rom Mouille Point to Camps Bay and back. But nothing more than about an hour. You won’t be alone – it’s a festival of easy cycling before the big day.

CHECK, AND CHECKAGAIN!Things to double-check before you leave your home or hotel (I speak from bitter experience): is your front wheel in the car? Is your thru-axle skewer in the car? Have you got your shoes? Both of them? And for the right pedals? 109km on road pedals, with MTB cleats, is not fun.

BUM CREAMWe don’t advocate trying stuff for the first time on race day… except for bum cream. It will, quite literally, save your sorry butt. You can use Fissan paste, or any nappy cream, but the dedicated cycling creams are specially formulated to keep your derriere happy, no matter how sweaty or savage your ride ends up being.

COMMANDO IS KING. OR QUEEN. Cycling shorts are designed to be worn next to the skin – without underwear. True story. If your knickers bunch up for 109km, you won’t walk for a week afterwards; rather let the skimpy Lycra and padding work their magic. And try not to think about that hottie who just pedalled past, wearing just as little as you are. We’re all in the same boat.

NOTHING NEW!Race day is not when you should be trying out new stuff, whether it’s those on-special white shoes, or the latest and greatest energy concoction. Play in training, rather than finding out on the day that your Mango-Chilli HiEnergy PowerBombTM is about to turn your ride into a Tour de Portaloo.

PEDAL ON THEDOWNHILLSYou will gain so much time by keeping the pedals turning (not flat out, just keeping your momentum), that the slight bit of extra energy used is really worth it. It’s also safer – you’ll concentrate, and be primed to react, rather than daydreaming your way into trouble.

COMERIDE We have the mountain bike trails. We have the cycling lanes and world-class road infrastructure. We have the energy. Come to Cape Town and make your cycling event a success. Visit capetown.gov.za/events

Fuel Your Ride

HAVE SEVERAL SMALL MEALS WITH COMPLEX CARBS TO MAXIMISE GLYCOGEN STORAGE – suggestions include a seed-loaf sandwich, a whole-grain couscous and roast vegetable salad, a filled, baked sweet potato, fresh or dried fruit, or wholewheat crackers with hummus. Drink plenty of fluid the day before, too – that way, you’ll start the ride well hydrated rather than having to play catch-up in the morning.

IT 'S WISE TO AVOID EATING TOO LATE IN THE EVENING BEFORE THE BIG DAY – AND

DON’T OVER-EAT. Some recommendations are a beef or chicken stir-fry with noodles, pasta with a light sauce and grated parmesan, or even baked, crumbed chicken or fish with a baked potato and salad.

EATING SOMETHING BEFORE YOU START THE RACE WILL ENSURE YOU FEEL STRONGER DURING THE RIDE – AND IT WILL DELAY THE ONSET OF FATIGUE. Porridge or cereal with milk is the perfect pre-race breakfast; or make a smoothie

with fruit, yoghurt and almonds to boost your energy levels. If it’s just too early for you to eat, opt for an energy bar, or even just a banana.

REMEMBER TO HYDRATE, AND DRINK A GLASS OF FLUID AT LEAST AN HOUR BEFORE THE RACE. Many cyclists like to include coffee or tea for a pre-ride caffeine boost – the caffeine tricks the brain into making the ride feel easier, and can help you to keep going for longer.

N U T R I T I O N

There remains a great deal of controversy about the need for carbo-loading; but the fact remains that topping up with stored fuel the day before the race is highly recommended. by juliet fearnhead , Pick n Pay Dietitian

For more great nutritional advice and informationcontact Pick n Pay’s dietitian [email protected]

TO PREVENT THE ONSET OF FATIGUE, START FUELLING ABOUT 30 MINUTES INTO THE RACE. The key is to fuel little, but often; don’t over-eat, but don’t forget to eat either. Some riders set a regular alarm as a reminder. Consider these recommended snacks:• 250ml sports drink • a small handful of raisins• ½ an energy or granola bar• ½ a banana• 1-2 boiled baby potatoes • ½ an energy gel• Marmite sandwich (1 slice)• 3 salty crackers

THERE ARE NO STRICT RULES ABOUT HOW MUCH YOU SHOULD DRINK – THE AMOUNT YOU NEED WILL DEPEND ON YOUR SWEAT RATE. Start hydrating early on; and drink little and often, according to your thirst. Take two refillable bottles on the bike – one for water, and one for a sports or electrolyte drink. Ideally, your choice of drink should provide electrolytes (sodium and potassium) as well as carbs (glucose or sucrose). For a caffeine boost near the end of your ride, consider keeping an easy-to-access caffeine gel or tablet .

If you’re interested in more individualised guidelines, think about working with a registered dietician who has a special interest in sports nutrition, and can design an eating plan that will help meet the nutrition demands of your competitive sport. You can find a sports dietician in your areaby visiting www.adsa.org.za.

Drink, and Be Merry

CCPB, the local bottlers and distributors of Coca-Cola products in the Western and Northern Cape, will once again keep cyclists hydrated and refreshed as they embark on this scenic but often gruelling route. The CCPB special events and logistics team begin setting up the hydration points along the route from midnight on race day. 300 dedicated crew and 37 transport trucks make all of the magic happen with Coca-Cola, Powerade and water, as the team works through the early hours of the morning in preparation for the race, which sets off at 6:15.

Matthew Jewell, Marketing Assets Manager for CCPB, says, “Hydration is key at such a big cycling event, where the sheer number of people already poses a logistical and safety challenge. We urge participants to keep hydrated throughout the race.

“Once again there will be

14 refreshment points where we will deliver a selection of drinks, including more than

110 000 litres of water, 50 000 litres of Coca-Cola and 40 000

litres of Powerade. And to top it all off, 60 tons of ice will be delivered to keep the drinks

H Y D R A T I O N

The Cape Town Cycle Tour celebrates its 42nd anniversary in 2020, and Coca-Cola Peninsula Beverages (CCPB) is proud to have been associated with the world’s largest timed cycle race for the past 39 of those years.

Hydration is key at such a big cycling event, where the sheer number of people already poses a logistic and safety challenge.

– and the cyclists – cool and refreshed.”

CCPB is guided by the following hydration tips from the Cape Town Cycle Tour organisers for cyclists preparing for the race and on race day:• On a hot day, the average rider should be drinking between 400ml and 600ml per hour to ensure that they

remain hydrated. • It is critical to keep a balance between being underhydrated and overhydrated, which can be as debilitating, so avoid the temptation to drink more than that.• The key to good, balanced hydration is to listen to your body, drinking small amounts regularly to make up that 400-

600ml, rather than gulping it all down.• If you are feeling overheated, stop and pour some water over your head and body, and do so again at the next water point. Wet clothes will keep you cool as you start to cycle again. The ice available at most of the water points can also be used to cool down your core temperature; apply it to the back of your neck and under your arms.

“The Cape Town Cycle Tour is one of the busiest races for the CCPB team, and safety and security are of the utmost importance. We are very pleased to have been partnered with this world-renowned cycling tour for the past 39 years, and wish all cyclists a fantastic race and all the best to the organising team,” concludes Jewell.

For more information about Coca-Cola Peninsula Beverages, visit peninsulabeverage.co.za or contact 021 936 5500. CCPB is also on Facebook: www.facebook.com/CocaColaPenBev.

Once again there will be 14 refreshment points offering Coke, Powerade, water and ice.

On Your Marks!FINDING YOUR START CHUTE IS A LOT SIMPLER AT THE GRAND PARADE, BUT IT CAN STILL BE A BIT BEWILDERING ON RACE DAY. PANIC NOT! WE'RE HERE TO HELP.

There’s plenty of legal parking in the CBD –

don’t ruin your day with a

ticket.

COMING FROM THE ATLANTIC SEABOARD/GREEN POINT?Head for Strand or Darling Streets, and the City Hall, where the lovely Rotary Anns will usher you into your start chutes.

COMING FROM THE SOUTHERN SUBURBS?Head in on the M5, and take the Robert Sobukwe split at Hospital Bend, and in via Roeland Street. (If you go down Nelson Mandela Boulevard, you will have to merge with the Northern Suburbs traffic coming off the N1). Riding in? Upper Main Road is the way… if you have come through on the Lower Main Road, you will need to filter up to Main before it goes under the freeway.

COMING FROM THE NORTHERN SUBURBS?Follow the N1 all the way through to the Waterfront intersection and you will find ample legal parking in the CBD. Riding in? Use the bike paths which will guide you to the south side of the Cape Town Station. Turn left up Adderley Street, and left again into Strand or Darling.

BE EARLY. REALLY EARLYYou must be in your start chute at least an hour before you set off, because the entry gates shut quite early as the groups move up in the start sequence. An hour and a half early gives you time to get lost, go to the loo and manage any other crises (traffic!).

PUBLIC TRANSPORTThe MyCiti bus service will be running free shuttles between the start and finish all day, and a skeleton service (you will need your MyCiti card) to take you to and from the event, on its normal routes. Metrorail runs a special service from and to Fishhoek, from 04h36 am to 15h30, costing R47 return (tickets only available at the expo). Details of both services on capetowncycletour.com

What Time Do You Start? At the Cape Town Cycle Tour, the seeding system – and its staggered start – has led the world in sorting out the mess that is mass-participation events. The timing team spends a full year ironing out glitches to make the Cycle Tour exponentially safer than it might otherwise be – by placing similar abilities and fitness levels with each other, group after group.

Trust The DoctorFROM CRAMPING TO HYDRATION TO KNOWING WHEN NOT TO START – DR DARREN GREEN FROM MEDICLINIC IS HERE TO GUIDE YOU.

No one really knows why we cramp. But we know that there are different causes for cramp in different population groups. And being conditioned is the most important thing for reducing the chances of cramps, since they hit most often when the muscles are fatigued.

So, what to do when you cramp?

The first thing is to stop. You can’t keep riding if your hamstring is cramping, because you’ll be a danger to others on the road if you suddenly swerve or fall over.

The best way to get the muscle to uncramp is to stretch it. Ask someone to help you slowly stretch the muscle, or stretch it yourself. You need to increase the blood flow into the muscle; this will help to get it working again.

ENERGYDon’t try anything new on race day!

But if you must, try to be sure you know what’s in the products you’re taking. Read the labels.

A lot of energy boosters contain stimulants that have

the ability to increase your heart rate, so be careful.

It’s best to stick to well-known brands such as Powerade, since they will be available at all the refreshment stations on race day.

On the day, everybody wants that gummyberry juice to give

them a boost when they tire. But be sure you know the sugar

content of the drink or gel you’re taking. It may make you feel great 10 minutes later, but after the spike, it will dump you.

The key is sustained energy release throughout the race; and drinking and eating good sources of carbs, and even protein.

Then there are the serious painkillers: such as opioids, which contain codeine, and can affect concentration.

Trust The Doctor

MEDICATIONWhatever you do, don’t change your use of chronic medication on race day.

Whether it’s asthma, epilepsy, blood pressure or heart medication, stick to your normal schedule. Your body is used to exercising with those meds anyway.

The crucial group you need to keep an eye on is the painkillers. If you take painkillers of any kind, you put yourself at risk. Some anti-inflammatory medication can affect kidney function, and even cause kidney failure; while

antipyretics, used to treat fever, can affect liver toxicity when combined with alcohol – such as your post-finish beer.

Then there are the serious painkillers: such as opioids, which contain codeine, and can affect concentration and your level of consciousness. Not something you want when you’re flying down Hospital Bend.

If you have a history of severe allergy and anaphylaxis, remember your EpiPen. The route may take in some of the world’s great flora, but they also attract bees. So always be on the safe side.

RECOVERYIt’s important to cool your muscles down after a ride.

Keep walking through the finish zone, and slowly get the blood moving back from your legs to the rest of your body. If you just stop, you may feel dizzy, because all the blood has been shunted to your legs.

Get a recovery drink – a chocolate milk is always great – and replenish your lost fluids and electrolytes before you have that first celebratory drink. You’ll be thankful you did on Monday.

STAYING SAFEMediclinic will have 13 points along the route where our staff can check your blood pressure, pulse and sugar levels. We’re there to help you, and our responsibility is to make sure everyone is safe.

Sometimes, riders become argumentative if we advise them to stop – understandably, but it’s important to know that we’re always working only in your best interests.

If one of our medical staff advises you to stop, please listen to them. It could save your life.

MEDICLINIC will have 13 points along the route where our staff can check your blood pressure, pulse and sugar levels.

Keeping It CleanFrom an environmental impact perspective, the Cape Town Cycle Tour is a world-leading event. The scale of the clean-up operation after the Tour is staggering: to leave 109km spotless – after 35 000 cyclists, plus spectators, support vehicles and 3 000 volunteers have done their thing all day – is an award-winning achievement. Cleaning up stricken cyclists? They do that too…

STASH YOUR TRASHOne of the innovations (indeed, one of the successes) of recent years has been the Cycle Tour’s Stash Your Trash campaign, with two dedicated areas where riders can empty their pockets (this is good; it makes you lighter for Chappies and Suikerbossie) of wrappers and other rubbish which otherwise – disturbingly often – ends up on the road.

The first one is at the foot of Chapman’s Peak,

just before you start climbing; and the second is in Hout Bay, between the two traffic circles – again, allowing you to lighten your load for Suikerbossie.

The idea is to keep your rubbish until either of these (or bin it at any of the refreshment stations, which are fully equipped to receive your refuse), rather than spreading it across our beautiful Peninsula. Apart from generally being bad manners, littering increases our baboon problems, so Stash Your Trash is doubly good.

WHAT IF MY BIKE BREAKS?Most refreshment stations will have a mechanic station (along with a medical tent, a physio service, Coke, Powerade and water), but there will also be mechanics on motorbikes carrying limited spares en route. Wave them down if you need assistance, or make your way to a refreshment station and get help there.

Of course, we would really rather you carry sufficient bike spares on you – a tube, something to inflate it with and tyre levers, as a bare minimum. But for that second puncture, or something more dramatic, we have you covered.

CUT-OFF POINTS & TIMESTo ensure your safety, and that of other road users, a number of cut-off points have been established. Unfortunately, if you have not reached a specific cut-off point in time, you will have to board one of the sweep buses provided, which will take you and your bike back to the finish at Green Point.

THE SWEEPSThe Mega and Mini Sweep plan comprises 16 Mini Sweep vehicles and 14 Mega Sweep buses. Cyclists who don’t make the cut-off must board a Mega Sweep bus (the Mini Sweeps roam the route, uplifting riders who can’t continue away from the cut-off spots). All cyclists are scanned (via their race number), which allows the race control team to identify which cyclists have been collected by sweep vehicles.

Where To WatchIF YOU’RE NOT ONE OF THE 30 000 CYCLISTS TAKING PART IN THIS YEAR’S CAPE TOWN CYCLE TOUR, THEN PACK A PICNIC, SLAP ON SOME SUNBLOCK, AND COME AND CHEER THE RIDERS ON. HERE ARE THE BEST VIEWING SPOTS ALONG THE ROUTE.

CHILL ZONE: Watch the riders go by from your spot at Kalk Bay’s Olympia Café.

EDINBURGH DRIVE AND BLUE ROUTEParadise Road is good for watching cyclists speed past and start the climb up Edinburgh Drive, which is the steepest gradient of the Tour. If you’re keen to spot a family member or friend, then this is the best vantage point. The bridges along the Blue Route are also a crowd favourite – even more so in 2020, as Heart FM will be hosting a huge spectator spot.

GLENCAIRN BEACHMuizenberg and Kalk Bay locals line the roads; and a little further along, there’s pedestrian access to the grassed area at Glencairn Beach.

SIMON'S TOWNMain Road is the next popular spectator point. Jubilee Square is a long-standing favourite, and always has a great vibe.

Getting in and out will be a challenge, obviously, as the roads are closed for the race, but it’s worth the effort: pack a picnic, or jol with the locals.

NOORDHOEKAs riders get close to Chapman’s Peak, they pass Noordhoek Farm Village; join the locals (on foot) and relax at one of the restaurants on the roadside.

HOUT BAY AND SUIKERBOSSIEStroll down to Main Road or camp out on Suikerbossie. It’s a great place to watch,

as the riders will be searching for their last droplets of energy. You’ll need to walk a short way, as there’s no parking on or even near the climb itself.

SEA POINT AND THE FINISHAfter the Camps Bay beachfront, with its pedestrian bridge giving access to both sides of the road, there’s just the finish stretch along Beach Road for you to show your support.

A F T E R - A C T I O N A D V I C E

Finished! Now What?FINISHING THE CAPE TOWN CYCLE TOUR IS ONE OF LIFE’S FINEST MOMENTS – NO MATTER HOW MANY YOU'VE DONE, OR HOW FAST YOU MAY HAVE RIDDEN.

THE FIRST THING TO CONSIDER AT THE FINISH IS ACTUALLY AS YOU APPROACH THE FINISH. There are two people, on the day, who have the honour of throwing their arms in the air in victory: the men’s winner, and the women’s winner. If you are neither of those, then please don’t; the number of crashes on the finish line is, well, silly. Just... don’t.

RIGHT, BACK TO THE FUN BITS: AFTER YOU FINISH, YOU WILL BE SHEPHERDED TO COLLECT YOUR MEDAL,

YOUR COKE AND YOUR POWERADE. Please, keep moving through this area, if only to reduce the stress levels of the patient Rotarians whose job it is to keep the flow going – there’s plenty of space to share war stories just a few hundred metres on. Do remember to have your photo taken

at the Jetline Action photo wall, to celebrate finishing your 109km feat!

FROM HERE, YOU HAVE CHOICES. You can head straight home (boo, hiss); or you can stash your bike in the Thule Bike Park, and celebrate your ride with us in the race village, where you can eat, drink, be merry and relive every pedal stroke. Please ensure that your Number Board (with your Number Board sticker) is cable-tied to your front handlebars, so you’re able to check your bike in at the Thule Bike Park. The Number Board links you to your bike.

The Cape Town Cycle Tour is owned by the Cape Town Cycle Tour Trust, and the proceeds from the Tour are split equally between the Pedal Power Association and Rotary.

Rotary uses its share for community-based projects across the Western Cape, including early-learning centres on the Cape Flats, and has assisted 61 Early Childhood Development centres (ECDs), physically upgrading 14 of them. It has introduced teacher training and enrichment programmes in all of the ECDs, improving the life chances of over 4 000 children a year.

The Claremont and Newlands clubs have made significant investments in communities along the Cycle Tour route in the South Peninsula – starting in 2004, as a result of kids in Ocean View throwing stones at riders in the Cycle Tour. We realised this could become a serious threat,

and a security-based response would not be sustainable.

We engaged with Ocean View High School, and headmaster Keith Klein. Their most pressing need then was to re-roof an asbestos-clad classroom , for a secure computer centre. Over the next three years, Claremont Rotary funded and coordinated:• A community forum;• Two computer centres, one air-conditioned;

• 25 bicycles, and Cycle Tour entries for 30-plus children and staff; • A vegetable garden, to help provide meals for learners;• School tours; and• The MindMatters social development programme, which addressed issues such as deviant behaviour,

bullying, teenage pregnancy and poor learning results.

More than R400 000 has been invested, and academic results and social behaviour influenced positively. Becoming a member of the school cycling team has become a highly prized achievement.

The school fleet of bicycles has grown to over 200, and a pump track has been built that is accessible to kids from the whole area; alongside an

independently-run bike repair facility on the school grounds, which maintains bicycles for the whole of Ocean View.

In the last three years, Masiphumelele has been our focus. We partnered with Masicorp, an NGO that has been active for over 20 years, playing a major role in providing

resources and upgrading the school – built to accommodate 600 children, but currently teaching 1 950. In spite of massive management and logistical problems, it has been a revelation to see the levels of enterprise and innovation in sport and academic achievement in this school.

Former SA cricketer Vince van der Bijl is a board member of the MCC in London, and persuaded the club to contribute £50 000 towards a multifaceted sports programme at the school, supporting six sports, including cricket, soccer, rugby, netball and basketball. Today, over 450 kids are assisted by 19 staff and coaches. Vince has also done mind-blowing work at the Ukhanyo Primary School.

We have established a strong relationship with this

programme, and since 2017 we’ve been involved with:• The Masi 750 sports programme, to which we contributed R50 000;• Songezo Jim’s Cycling Academy, run by one of Masiphumelele’s most successful residents (supported by Masicorp): we donated 15 racing bikes, Cycle Tour entries, and repair and maintenance;• Donating 40 new single-speed bikes for the school, in collaboration with BEN, PPA and Qhubeka;• Setting up a chess club;• Eye testing and spectacles for 30 kids with vision problems at Ukhanyo Primary School;• Refurbishing an ECD school run by Masicorp, at a cost of R600 000. Attendance rose from 50 to 150;

• Together with the Cycle Tour Trust, we worked with the high school to reopen and run the water station in Masi, which had been closed down because of pilfering; • Donating kit for one of the Ukhanyo soccer teams;• Donating soccer and netball kit to an Ocean View school for children with learning disabilities;• Further afield, we contributed R300 000 towards a state-of-the-art skateboard park in Hout Bay, where we plan to work with other Rotary clubs to expand on the good work being done in this area.

Songezo Jim’s Cycling

Academy is one of Rotary’s

beneficiaries.

As one of the two partners (with Rotary) in the Cycle Tour Trust, which organises the Cape Town Cycle Tour, the PPA has been behind the Cycle Tour from the beginning.Founded in 1976, the PPA is a Public Benefit Organisation committed to promoting cycling and the interests of cyclists. Recreational cycling (on- and off-road), development through cycling, safe cycling and advocacy are among the PPA’s priorities. Its

mandate is:• To be a representative body for the furtherance of the interests of cyclists;• To promote cycling as a recreational activity, a

sport, and as a means of transportation;• To improve conditions for cyclists regarding their safety;• To arrange and organise cycle tours, fun rides and outings;• To co-ordinate cycle tours, fun rides and outings organised by other bodies and to assist them in their efforts;• To establish contact and liaise with – and where appropriate, affiliate with –other organisations having similar interests and objectives.

FLAGSHIP PPA EVENTSCape Town Cycle Tour seeding events include the Medihelp Stellenbosch Cycle Tour, the Tour De PPA, the One Tonner

and the Maluti Double90 sponsored by CycleLab, powered by Biogen. We host the popular Tiletoria Elgin Valley MTB, and for the very first time, The MTB Challenge.

THE SAFETY OF CYCLISTS ON THE ROAD IS OUR PRIORITY – STAY WIDER OF THE RIDERSince its inception in 2011 as the ‘Stay Alive at 1.5’ campaign, the ‘Stay Wider of the Rider’ safe cycling campaign, launched in 2014, has grown to become a nationally recognised safety campaign. • 125 000 stickers handed out to drivers annually;• Handed out 6 500 bibs across all provinces in 2019;• Awareness rides in Joburg, Mamelodi, Khayelitsha, Durban, PE and Mossel Bay;• Crash and crime map;•Monitoring and support of

BIKE4 ALL DISTRIBUTION PROJECTWith funding that is granted to us, our focus is on the Bike4All campaign, which was launched in 2017 and runs in conjunction with the Bicycle Empowerment

Network (BEN). Bike4All is a holistic distribution program that aims to promote mobility and access to bicycles in a responsible and sustainable manner.A bicycle is a cheap and reliable means of transport, which – most importantly – alleviates the congestion we face on the roads. Riding a bicycle means saving on transport costs and relieving stress, while encouraging social

interaction and promoting social cohesiveness. But most importantly, cycling is fun! So far, we have:• Distributed close to 3 000 bicycles nationwide;• Taught 250 learners to cycle with Learn2Cycle lessons;• Trained more than 3 500 youth and adults who successfully completed our safety training course;• Established bike rental sites in McGregor and Greyton.

DEVELOPMENT CLUBSIn recent years, the PPA has made a considerable effort to develop the sport of cycling in poorer, previously disadvantaged communities across South Africa, and supports several clubs and cycling initiatives. We continue to support 45 development clubs with subsidised event entries, PPA membership and fuel assistance.

Please join the PPA – as a member, you contribute to us making the roads safer and providing opportunities to others who need our help. www.pedalpower.org.za

The world’s biggest timed bike ride can be intimidating; if you reckon the thought of 30 000+ Lycra-clad people descending on Cape Town for a spin around the Peninsula is wild, just imagine the frenzy behind the scenes.

As the organisers of the event, the Cape Town Cycle Tour Trust is on a perpetual path of improvement; whether tweaking the near-perfect seeding system or finding a sensible way to include e-bikes, the other 51 weeks of the year are as busy as Race Week.

HOW DOE S S E E DING ACTUALLY WORK?Let’s start with the why. Imagine the free-for-all if we could decide where we wanted

to start – 30 000 riders in 1A, essentially. Imagine the chaos. From the very first Tour, the need to split riders into groups was clear, and that was with only 525 starters. In 1978 it was easy; the licensed riders (the racing snakes) started five minutes after the amateur riders, and peace reigned. It was short-lived, though, as the

entries doubled every year for the next decade, and the need for seed became a major safety initiative.

The Cape Town Cycle Tour was the first mass-participation event to implement a seeding system, mainly because it fast became the only one that needed to. You need more than one

Powerful NumbersFrom opening its arms to the powerful world of e-bikes, to making sure its entrants ride safely with their peers, the Cycle Tour has a plan for everything.

E X P L A I N E R

The Cape Town Cycle Tour was the first mass-participation event to implement a seeding system...

The seeding system makes sure you ride with people as fit, fast and skilled as you.

result, preferably from a seeding event, and ideally the average of your best three results will be used. Only your best results are used for seeding purposes – the rest are discarded from the calculation. (So it never hurts to have a bad result, because a bad result is better than no result at all!). Some races have a better-quality field than others. The adjusted winner’s time should be roughly the time that the winner of an event would have done if the winner of the Cycle Tour had ridden that event at the same effort. To allow for this there is a difficulty, or ‘beta’ factor; which will be 1 if the event is as difficult as the Cycle Tour, less than 1 if it’s easier, and more than 1 if it’s harder.

You need enough results to make up 100% before the seeding system starts working properly for you. If you don’t have enough results to make up a full seeding, a penalty of 20% is added in the case of two results missing, or 10% in the case of one result missing. There is no subjectivity in this process – it is an automated calculation, without human intervention.

Chances are, if you’re objective too, your seeding will be spot-on!

POWER TO THEPEOPLEE-bikes at the Cape Town Cycle Tour? WHAT?! Oh yes, they’re here – and they’re here to stay. And this is a very good thing; it’s quite easy to separate the people who have ridden a pedal-assist bike further than the shop parking lot, from those who see it as cheating. It really isn’t – e-bikes are drawing people to our sport who would never have ridden otherwise; and they are such enablers that

research has shown that e-bikers ride up to five times a week (and twice as far), compared to just once, all at more vigorous efforts than on a normal bike. Fast-forward a decade, and we’ll all have one in our arsenal.

The decision to allow pedal-assist bikes – it’s important to make this distinction; a bike that keeps powering when you stop pedalling is a motorbike, and is not eligible – was not taken lightly. The e-peloton will be the last group to leave the start. e-Riders may not

start in the normal seeded groups, and their e-time will not qualify for future seeding; neither do they qualify for any prizes (all of which is moot; if you want to ride 109km on an e-bike, you’ll be on its lowest-assist setting all the way, or face pushing a 30kg bike up Suikerbossie). The CTCT rules dictate that to enter your e-bike, it must be governed to 25km/h, not weigh more than 40kg, not have a motor rated at more than 250kW, and comply with all the regular bicycle safety regulations.

A world of wonder in one city.once you’ve seen table mountain national park from your bike, come experience

the rest of the attractions in south africa’s most visited national park.

T O U R I S M I N F O

LAUGH IT OFFThe Cape Town Comedy Festival is South Africa’s largest, and in 2020 it features 15 award-winning international artists. The shows take place at the Artscape Theatre in the city centre, from 1 to 8 March.

OPEN-TOP BUS TOURThe open-top, hop-on hop-off bus tours are the second-best way to see the city – after riding your bike around it. The buses have a tour guide aboard to explain the historical significance or cultural importance of the myriad sights Cape Town offers.

VISIT CAPE POINTKnown as the Cape of Storms in the age of exploration, and even on a day of calm seas and light winds it’s easy to see why so many ships were wrecked rounding the Cape. You will see some of the Peninsula’s endemic flora

and quintessentially Africa fauna.

HISTORYTaking a tour of the Castle, the oldest European building in South Africa, provides a portal to the city’s early roots, and no trip to the Mother City is complete without a visit to Robben Island.

PENGUINS AT BOULDERS BEACHHundreds of foot-tall gangsters suited up for a wedding, waddling the sands of Simonstown. What’s not to love? Go early, before the crowds.

HIT THE BEACHNo visit to Cape Town is complete without sunning yourself on one of the many Blue Flag beaches, from the glamour of Clifton, Camps Bay and Llandudno, where sunbathing is the order of the day, to active beaches such as Muizenberg, where

you can learn to surf.

TOP TABLE MOUNTAIN The other Cape Town must-do, of course, is to take in the sights of the city from the heights of Table Mountain. Hiking up Platteklip Gorge is the quickest way to the summit on foot; or if you’re pressed for time, you can catch a cable-car up and down.

EATFrom not-so-humble gourmet burgers to five-star fine dining, the city offers it all. Try the famous fish and chips in the harbours of Hout Bay or Kalk Bay – carbo-loading at its very best.

DRINKStart off your relaxation with a wine tasting at one of Constantia’s award-winning wine farms, like Klein Constantia, before shuttling to the CBD to sample the huge variety of night life options.

It’s Not About The BikeCAPE TOWN OFFERS SO MUCH MORE THAN JUST THE BIGGEST TIMED BIKE RIDE IN THE WORLD. WHILE YOU'RE HERE, WHY NOT STEP OUT AND ENJOY?
