PRESIDENT’S LETTER

WORD FROM CAPE RUGBY TV

T his past weekend saw the league phase of the Super League A, B and C come to an end. Congratulations to Maties, Villager and

Franschoek United, who all won their respective leagues.

Maties finished the league campaign unbeaten, while Villager were stuck in a three-way battle at the top of Super League B. Franschoek United’s run to the title

This past week, Cape Rugby TV travelled to Brookside to cover the Super League B crunch fixture Villager versus Sir Lowrians. This, by all accounts, was always going to be a cracker of a match, and that’s exactly how it panned out.

@jpnaude

seemed to come out of nowhere, but they proved that the league campaign is not a sprint, but a marathon.

This weekend sees the start of the Top 8 competitions in Super League A, B, and C. The venues for these games will be Brookside and City Park. These competitions are great ways for the clubs to start building for next season.

Next week is the launch of the President’s Cup. This follows a similar format to the Super Rugby campaign and will be played among the teams that finished in positions one to six in Super League A, B, and C.

What is so special about this tournament is that the final will be played at DHL Newlands. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for our clubs to grace the cherished turf.

I would like to take this opportunity to wish DHL Western Province U21 lock JD Schickerling a speedy recovery after his serious neck injury. I have been in constant communication with his family since the incident and they are very grateful for all the love and support shown by everyone. A extra word of thanks to the entire WP Rugby family for their commitment and strength shown throughout.

Thelo WakefieldWPRFU PRESIDENT

As expected, Sir Lowrians brought out their big guns and dominated in many ways, but against the odds, Villager held on to win by sticking to their game plan. The best part of the match were the supporters. Not only did Sir Lowrians make an effort in terms of dress in their matching suits, but their fans arrived in big numbers.

Additionally, Sir Lowrians neighbours St George’s also toured from across the bay to watch the match. It’s this type of support across the leagues that has brought unity to club rugby. The more we “cross pollenate” the club rugby activity, the better for the potential of exposure to the fans.

This is exactly why we need to create a supporters club. This will give us activity and content, which allows media coverage and again, opens the door for sponsors to come on board with clubs. I look forward to everyone handing out more magazines and adding extra hype to the new tournaments, which are about to unfold.

Have a fantastic rugby weekend,

JP Naude

T hose who have attended Brookside over the years would have witnessed many famous club rugby moments. On Saturday, another historic moment played out as Villager

defeated Sir Lowrians to win the Super League B title, which secures them a return to Super League A.

Villager scored the first points through wing Neil du Toit, before Sir Lowrians hit back with a try of their own. Sir Lowrians were intent on running the ball and often chose to kick for touch instead of taking the three points.

Villager prop Ryan Germishuys scored and set up a try with a delicious grubber kick, which Man on the Match Geoff van Reyneveldt collected and scored. Du Toit also went on to complete his brace.

Villager had to weather a late Sir Lowrians fightback, but held on for a deserved victory.

Villager beat Sir Lowrians to claim Super League B honours.

It didn’t go our way today, best of luck to Villager. We prepared well for this one and worked hard during the week. I’m proud of

Sir Lowrians.

EDWARD MAKHUNDAYISIR LOWRIANS CAPTAIN

What a game. It’s been a great rugby season for us. This game was a cracker. Villager were more clinical than us. It’s about planning now, we’ve got to dig

and prepare for Super League A.

I’m relieved more than anything to be honest. It was a tough game,

but we have some experienced heads out there and a really good bench to call upon. It’s been long road for us. I’m still trying to work

out the permutations!

I can’t believe it, I’m over the moon. It’s an indescribable feeling. It’s

been hard work this season. We had a three-year plan to get into Super League A and we’ve done it in two,

so we’re pretty chuffed.

Division: Super League A Top 8Match: SK Walmers v TygerbergVenue: City ParkThis weekend sees the first round of the inaugural Top 8 competitions across Super League A, B, and C. In Super League A, SK Walmers face Tygerberg in a match between two sides that have underperformed this season by their own standards. SK Walmers struggled for consistency, but are quite a handful on their day. Tygerberg will be looking to put their league troubles behind them and come out firing in the new competition.

Division: Super League B Top 8Match: Collegians v KraaifonteinVenue: Brookside Sports GroundCollegians lost out on a place in the President’s Cup by a few log points. They play a Kraaifontein side that had a disappointing league campaign overall. Collegians have proven to be a match for anyone on their day and will look to make a big statement in this exciting clash.

Division: Super League C Top 8Match: Silverleaf v PaarlVenue: Brookside Sports GroundTwo teams that finished in similar positions on the table go head-to-head in this exciting fixture. Paarl flirted with the top six places, but fell short in the end, while Silverleaf struggled to build up any real momentum. This should be an even game with not much to choose between the two clubs.

Division: Top 9 Champions LeagueMatch: Caledonian Roses v Young StarsVenue: Noll AvenueThis is one of the most historic fixtures in club rugby as both teams have histories that go back over a hundred years. Young Stars have made a great start to the competition and are unbeaten after five games. Both teams will be aiming for a top performance on the day, so expect fireworks in this one.

Division: City League Top 8Match: Busy Bees v PerseveranceVenue: Langa StadiumPerseverance have found it tough going into the competition and are yet to register a win. They travel to Busy Bees, who have their eyes on a successful finish. Busy Bees have been in formidable at home and will look to continue that trend this weekend.

Division: Northern League Top 8Match: All Saints v KhayelitshaVenue: Somerset West All Saints top the table, but they face a Khayelitsha side that is unbeaten so far. All Saints missed out on the Champions League by just three points and will have something to prove in this clash.

Division: Southern League Top 8Match: Rocklands v ThistlesVenue: Rocklands Sports ComplexRocklands have made an inconsistent start to the competition and will look to keep up with the pace set by the league leaders. Picking up a victory over a struggling Thistles side would be a great way to start.

Division: Paarl RegionMatch: Lower Paarl v NNKVenue: Faure StreetThis new competition sees the teams that have finished first, second and third in the Paarl League Top 6 take on teams that finished bottom of Super League A, B, and C. Lower Paarl swept aside all before them this season, but face a real test as they come up against Super League A outfit NNK. NNK struggled this year, but will look to register their first win.

Division: Simonsberg RegionMatch: Faure v LanquedocVenue: Macassar Sports FieldsFaure desperately need a victory to keep up with Pumas at the top of the table. They have a good chance of doing so when they host a struggling Lanquedoc side. A home victory is expected in this fixture.

The Brits name is part of a legacy at Sir Lowrians.

The club is run by John and Johannes Brits. Continuing that legacy is Johannes’ grandson, Terwin, whos a young star in the senior squad.

“I’ve been at the club for three years after joining from Strand Pioneers,” Brits tells Cape Rugby TV.

“I worked my up from the 3rd XV.”

Sir Lowrians just missed out on the Super League B title this season, losing a nail-biting encounter against Villager on the final day of the league campaign.

They still managed to secure promotion and Brits played a big part of that. He is an elusive runner and is dangerous on the counter-attack.

“Personally, I had a good season,” he says. “I’ve scored tries and contributed to the attack.

“It’s great having guys like Earl Rose and Bolla Conradie at the club. They’ve helped me with my game and I’ve improved a lot.”

TERWIN BRITSSIR LOWRIANS

Dylan Sage is back in Cape Town after spending the last Super Rugby season with the Western Force in Australia.

“Training with some of the best players in Super Rugby really improved my game” he tells Cape Rugby TV. “It was an unbelievable experience.”

Since his journey to Perth, Sage hit the ground running with UCT and his good form nearly carried the team to the Super League A title.

“We’ve played well this season,” Sage says. “The new format means that you can’t afford to slip up and unfortunately we did against Maties.

“I’ve really noticed how the standard in Super League A, particularly among the top six, has been higher this year,” Sage adds. “Teams like SK Walmers and False Bay are a handful for anyone on their day.”

Sage is a hard-running centre with a deceptive burst of speed. He starred in UCT’s victories over Hamiltons and Victorians.

“I’m enjoying my rugby at the moment,” he says. “I love playing for UCT,. This is a special club.”

NNK suffered a baptism of fire in Super League A this season and have been relegated to Super League B.

However, there were many positives to take out of this learning curve, especially the emergence of several impressive players. Versatile back Berthan Erasmus was one of the top performers.

“I’ve enjoyed playing for NNK this season,” Erasmus tells Cape Rugby TV. “This is a good club with a rich history. Personally, I feel like I’ve performed well.”

Erasmus was selected for the Western Province Amateur squad this season. He has also been a member of other provincial squads in the past.

“I enjoy playing sevens,” he adds. “It allows me to use my attacking skills, and I’ve tried to convert those skills to the 15-man game.”

Erasmus is one of the playmakers in the backline as he opens up space for his team-mates.

“I try to have good tactical awareness,” he says. “I know I have to make good decisions at any given moment.”

Mark Hodgkiss has been an integral part of Maties’ championship-winning season. Stellenbosch blew most of the opposition away as they finished the league campaign unbeaten.

“It’s been a great season for the team,” Hodgkiss tells Cape Rugby TV. “It was a tough final game, because we had UCT breathing down our necks, but we managed to pull through.”

Now in his fourth year in the senior team, Hodgkiss has become accustomed to winning trophies at this famous club. Maties managed to put aside their Varsity Cup disappointment as they ruled the Western Province club rugby scene.

The young centre is a strong runner, who looks to link play with his wingers by creating attacking opportunities.

“I’m happy with my season,” he says. “Although I was injured for the last game, I feel I contributed to a great team effort this year

“The standard of Super League A was tough. Teams like Primrose gave it a good go and they played like they had something to prove.”

CELEBRATING SUCCESSFranschoek United were worthy winners of Super League C.

T he old adage of “it’s not a race, it’s a marathon” applies to the title-winning season of Franschoek United.

Raithby Universals were looking unbeatable until two slip-ups opened the door for Franschoek, who took their opportunity and secured the title.

“It’s been a great season for us,” Franschoek chairman Teswill Boonzaaier told Cape Rugby TV. “Our goal was always to win the league, but it looked unlikely at one stage. The guys knew what they had to do and everyone played their part. The players worked incredibly hard and thoroughly deserved to be called champions.”

Franschoek United is a community club in the truest sense.

“All of our guys are from local areas,” says Boonzaaier. “We pride ourselves in having good coaching and discipline. We run like a well-oiled machine.”

Having secured league success, the club is now focusing on the President’s Cup, an exciting tournament that will run soon.

“We’re very excited about that competition,” says Boonzaaier. “The hype is definitely growing as most people in the streets are talking about it. Having the opportunity to play at DHL Newlands is a huge attraction.”

There is a depth at the club that is really impressive. The Franschoek 2nd XV won their division and the 3rd XV missed out by one log point, which would’ve secured the historic treble. The club also boasts a competitive women’s squad.

“The club is definitely growing,” says Boonzaaier. “We also have an impressive U20 side and we’re excited to bring them into the senior squad in the near future.”

Notable GrowthPrimrose made their mark in Super League A this season.

Primrose is one of the oldest rugby clubs currently active. Club president Faghier Gamieldien has been with the club since 1987.

“We’re not a community club in the traditional sense,” he tells Cape Rugby TV. “We draw from several communities. We don’t confine ourselves to one area like Lansdowne or Kenilworth. We often look outside the boundaries of the Western Cape to resource players when necessary.”

The club has enjoyed a respectable debut season in Super League A, which saw them finish 11th.

“It was a tough learning curve for us,” says Gamieldien. “We lost games we should’ve won and threw away big leads. The ability to close out games comes with experience.

“Overall, it was a good season, though. We have met our goals and we’ll go away and begin planning for next year. Being in Super League

A challenges your resources as a club. You can’t compete unless you have player depth.”

A highlight of their season was the thrilling 23-23 draw with traditional rivals SK Walmers.

“That was the highlight of our season,” recalls Gamieldien. “The atmosphere was electric and attendance was great.”

Primrose are renowned for their youth set-up. To date, they have 27 youth teams ranging from U7 to U19. The club’s famous products include former Springbok prop Eddie Andrews and current DHL Stormers and Western Province loose forward Nizaam Carr.

“Our youth teams are a big part of the club,” Gamieldien says. “We constantly have parents asking us if their children can join. It’s a social environment, but we realise the education of our kids is the most important thing.”

“At the start of the season, I had to fill in at inside centre, which was not ideal for me,” he tells Cape Rugby TV. “Once I moved back to outside centre, my game really started to take shape. We beat SACS twice this season, which was the highlight for the team.”

Heunis is a skilful player and prides himself on running good lines and creating space for his outside backs. He is a newcomer to the DHL Western Province youth set-up and pulled on the blue and white hoops for the first time at this year’s U18 Craven Week.

“Getting the call-up was an awesome achievement. It’s something I’m really proud about,” he says. “The competition was tough as the rugby played at provincial level is really high.

“It was good for me to meet the team and play with different players. My game has definitely benefitted from that experience.”

The 18-year-old will join the Western Province Institute after school, where he hopes to earn more opportunities in the near future.

the partnerships with local schools in the area. In particular, Macassar Primary has proven to be a great feeder school for the club.

“The youth set-up is definitely on the upswing,” says Konstabel. “Rugby is hugely popular in the Helderberg region and we’re trying to ensure our boys have a platform to succeed. Many players have come through our system and want to play for the club.

“We have also produced players for the DHL Western Province U13 Craven Week sides, as well as the WP Disas. We’ve also produced players who have gone on to play professional rugby.”

The Helderberg district has long been recognised as a hotbed for local rugby talent in the Western Province region. Macassar’s youth set-up is a huge attraction in the area.

“We have 12 youth teams ranging from U7 to U19,” executive member Japie Konstabel tells Cape Rugby TV. “We look after our boys and give them the best coaching possible.”

There is a distinct culture at the club, which is fostered at youth level. Players are taught to play in a certain way, and this filters throughout the entire club.

Which clubs have you represented?I am currently registered with Maties. Although I haven’t played for their first team, I did play a few games for their U20s before I was selected for the Junior Springboks. I would have loved to have played Varsity Cup.

Do you ever take the time to watch club rugby?I try and watch whenever I can. I’m best mates with Helmut Lehmann at Maties, so I go out and support them as often as possible.

What do you make of their Super League A title triumph? They had a great season and they deserved the title. Unfortunately, I was unable to watch their final game as we’re touring during the Currie Cup, but I chatted to a few of the players and it sounded like they enjoyed their win!

Does club rugby contribute to player development? It does. A big regret of mine was not playing Varsity

Cup, because I know how a competition like that can be a great stepping stone in a player’s career. Some of the DHL Western Province players were spotted during the Varsity Cup, so it’s proven to be a great breeding ground for local talent.

Any advice for club rugby players out there?Work hard and never give up. It’s cliché, but it’s true. Never stop believing in yourself.

As a youth player, Niel Bosman (left) had a distinguished career. He played 1st XV rugby for

Affies, and was selected for the DHL Western Province U19 squad.

Three years ago, he decided to pick up the whistle instead and hasn’t looked back. As a student at Stellenbosch University, Bosman has had to sacrifice a lot of his time to balance being a student with his refereeing career.

“I’ve had to work hard to get where I am,” he tells Cape Rugby TV. “If it means doing my assignments in the late hours of the night, so be it.

Referee Niel Bosman is making the most of his opportunities.

BEHIND THE WHISTLE

WOMEN’S PROFILE

“I’m a full-time ref and a part-time student!” he quips.

Bosman is a Division 2 referee and is setting his sights on higher honours.

“I’d like to make the SARU Contenders Squad next year,” he says. “All I need is someone to give me a chance.”

Although his refereeing career is still in its infancy, Bosman knows the importance of pre-match preparation.

“It’s important to do your homework before a game,” he says. “It’s very important to stay calm in order to make the right decisions.”

Blue Jets have had a stellar season in the Western Province Women’s League. Fullback Lungisa Ondela has been a key part of that success as she is the most experienced player at the club.

“My role is to be a leader and motivate the team,” she tells Cape Rugby TV. “I talk too much to be the captain!”

At the time of writing, Blue Jets were joint leaders at the top of the division.

Ondela has been playing for DHL Western Province since 2011. She is one of the older heads in the team and is enjoying her involvement.

“I love playing for DHL Western Province,” she says. “The women are well looked after and the game is definitely growing.

“At Blue Jets, we have new players joining each season from the local schools.”

Ondela is an attacking fullback with speed to burn. She previously played as a flyhalf, but has flourished in the last line of defence.

“Next year may be my last season as a player,” she adds. “I’m looking to either go into coaching or refereeing.”

COACH’S CORNER

Tell us about your background.I’ve played for Strand all my life. I came through the junior ranks here. I’ve represented the Western Province Disas in the past, where I played under former Springbok coach Peter De Villiers. I started coaching 10 years ago with the Strand 3rd XV. In 2012, I won the old Division 1 with the 1st XV.

How did you find this season? We aimed to win Super League C, so in that respect, we fell a bit short. We lost concentration at crucial times, but I feel like we’ve done well to

ONE CLUB MANAllie Harris has done wonders with Strand RFC this season.

recover after a good start. A top-six finish is no easy accomplishment in this league.

How do you feel about the level of local talent in Strand? Most of the players from our senior squad come from the Strand area. We have a very young squad that has been together for a while now. We like to play a running game as we have a lot of skilful players. Our club has always been a force in the Strand region.

What do you make of the new league format?I love it. It’s made the league very competitive as

you can’t afford to lose. It’s a quicker route to the higher divisions, so it’s great for club rugby in the Western Province region.

What are your goals for the upcoming President’s Cup?We want to get revenge on our rivals and win the thing! We’re really looking forward to the tournament and for the chance to potentially

play at DHL Newlands. We want to prove ourselves against the top teams.

What are your plans for the off-season?I found that our conditioning was lacking

this season, so that is something we need to work on. I’d like to beef up the guys as

we’re quite a small in size. Fitness and conditioning will be key for us as we

really want to play in Super League B in the near

future.
