PRESIDENT’S LETTER

WORD FROM CAPE RUGBY TV

As the club rugby season begins winding down, we have seen the term “community club” really come to the fore.

I have been so impressed with clubs that, despite having limited resources, maintain a high level of competitiveness on the field. The new format has meant more rugby for these clubs and their resources have really been stretched.

This week’s show was fascinating, not only due to some rather exciting results, but also the discussion around this weekend’s fixtures and the next round of rugby.

The weekend is jammed full of exciting matches, which will determine final league winners, not only from

@jpnaude

This has been an exciting season and it seems like each division has its own unique story to tell. This weekend there are some great games for supporters to go watch and I would urge anyone who is in the area to go do so.

We can write at length about the spirit and “gees” of club rugby but unless you have experienced it as a supporter, you are missing out.

The DHL Western Province Emerging side, which is made up of Super League A players, got off to a winning start in their Southern Amateur Provincial Championship which takes place in Humansdorp in the Eastern Cape. They beat an EP Invitational side 36-24.

The team, which is coached by Kuilsriver’s Lionel Langenhoven, is putting club rugby in the Western Cape on the map with such strong displays.

I’d like to wish all our clubs playing this weekend the very best of luck.

Thelo WakefieldWPRFU PRESIDENT

direct one-on-one results, but also due to several permutations in the leagues. It’s been a while since so many league titles were this closely contested.

In Super League A, the clash between Hamiltons and Stellenbosch will decide if the winners are UCT or Stellenbosch. In Super League B it’s a clash between Sir Lowrians and Villager at Brookside, and one could take the title and a loss for the other will prevent promotion. These are just two examples and there are similar permutations in the other divisions.

The other interesting discussion was around the President’s Cup, which will see the top six in each of the Super Leagues competing for a new trophy, while the bottom nine will also continue competing for honours. The top six knockouts will play their finals, along with the Super League U20s at Newlands.

It looks like we still have an exciting couple of weeks of club rugby ahead of us!

Have a fantastic rugby weekend,

JP Naude

MATCH DETAILS

8 CAPE RUGBY MAGAZINE / Issue 16

It was a typical derby day atmosphere as Rangers took on Collegians at Surrey Estate. Form went out the window as both teams were determined for victory from the first whistle.

Rangers were intent on playing their traditional running game, but were let down by poor set pieces.

Collegians showed aggression in the tight phases, with lock Shabier Baradien particularly impressive in helping to nullify the Rangers attack.

When Collegians ran with ball in hand, they did so with purpose and took most of their opportunities to score the points when it mattered.

The fans were electric all afternoon as they were treated to a typical derby match, filled with hard hits and flashes of brilliance from two exciting clubs.

Collegians edged out a gutsy Rangers side at Surrey Estate.

I’m very happy with the result as it wasn’t easy for us during the week. We trained hard and we deserved this. I could see we needed to mix up

our game and play from the back.

GOOSAIN BENJAMINCOLLEGIANS COACH

It was a good game. We set a good platform with our scrums and lineouts,

and we put them under pressure. There’s always a big hype around these derby games. We want to stay together

as a community and build on that.

We hoped for a better outcome in this one. Well done to

Collegians, but its back to the drawing board for us. We tend

to play a running game, but Collegians made it hard for us to

do so in this game.

It didn’t go our way today. Collegians wanted it more and

they deserved the win. We pride ourselves on playing an attacking

brand of rugby, but we let ourselves down with our set pieces.

It went well today. The guys were very focused going into this one. We know when to absorb the

pressure and when to attack.

Division: Super League AMatch: Maties v HamiltonsVenue: Danie Craven StadiumA win for Maties could secure them the Super League A title. Stellenbosch have been imperious all season and have yet to lose a game. They face a Hamiltons side that has just fallen short after losses to UCT and Durbell respectively.

Division: Super League BMatch: Villagers v Sir LowriansVenue: Brookside Sports GroundThe title race in Super League B has been competitive all season, so it’s fitting that it has gone down to the wire. Both teams can take giant strides towards lifting the trophy with a win here. Villager have struggled recently, but seem to have turned the corner, while Sir Lowrians continue to impress.

Division: Super League CMatch: Franschoek United v VioletsVenue: Groendal Sports GroundsViolets have been on a roll of late and caused a major upset when they beat Raithby Universals this past weekend. Franschoek would have relished that result as it opens up the door for a late title charge. There’s silverware chase is still very much open in this division.

Division: Top 9 Champions LeagueMatch: Young Stars v Young Wesley’sVenue: Greenpoint TrackYoung Stars are unbeaten so far in the promotion league and another win here will all but secure them a top-three finish. Young Wesley’s have been inconsistent so far, but are a dangerous outfit when given space to run. The return of Anthony Taylor from the World Club Sevens will no doubt boost the morale in the squad.

Division: Top 8 City LeagueMatch: Tech Gardens v Busy BeesVenue: OranjezichtBusy Bees will look to keep pace with log-leaders Temperance when they visit Tech Gardens this weekend. Tech have made an inconsistent start to the competition and will look to get a victory over a well-oiled Busy Bees outfit to build much-needed form.

Division: Top 8 Northern LeagueMatch: All Saints v DelftVenue: Somerset WestAll Saints have made a great start to the new competition and boast an impressive record. Delft will no doubt be disappointed with their start as they have yet to pick up a win. Both clubs will be keen to secure the win.

Division: Top 8 Southern LeagueMatch: Retreat v Richmond RangersVenue: Allenby DriveRetreat won their opening three matches and have looked convincing so far. They face a Richmond Rangers side struggling for form. Retreat will look to secure their place in the Southern League next season with a win here.

Division: Paarl League Top 6Match: Young Standards v AllandaleVenue: DaljosafatYoung Standards have made an unbeaten start to the competition and will look to keep pace with a rampant Lower Paarl side. Allandale have been inconsistent so far, but a victory here will set them back on track.

Division: Simonsberg RegionMatch: Phizantekraal v PumasVenue: PhizantekraalPumas have been in great form this season and have lost only two games. Phizantekraal are part of the chasing pack that hopes to spoil the title challenge.

Ryan Germishuys is enjoying his rugby once again after coming back from a serious injury. He joined Villager from UCT last year and is loving life at Brookside.

“I’m really enjoying being here,” he tells Cape Rugby TV. “The whole set-up is very professional and the man-management is great.”

Germishuys is not your traditional front rower as he boasts impressive skills with ball in hand. He has the distinct honour of breaking the Selborne forward record for most tries in a season for the 1st XV.

Villager have looked dominant throughout the season until they lost to St George’s and Hamlets in consecutive weeks.

“I think the guys became a bit complacent,” says Germishuys. “We know we have to make things right by finishing the season on a strong note.

“There’s a great vibe here and the guys are 100% committed to what the club is trying to achieve.”

Germishuys is benefitting from the older heads at the club. “Playing alongside someone like Troy Lee, who is vastly experienced, has really helped my game.”

RYAN GERMISHUYSVILLAGER

Sir Lowrians scrumhalf Tenswill Johnson is having a great season. He is learning from the experienced heads at the club and has proven to be a livewire.

“Obviously, competing with someone like Bolla Conradie has raised my game,” he tells Cape Rugby TV. “The guys who have played provincially have really helped the local guys in the squad.”

Sir Lowrians have been locked in a three-way battle at the top of Super League B with Villager and St George’s, so they can’t afford to slip up in the weeks ahead.

“The guys are focused at training,” says Johnson. “We want to give it our best shot. We’re very motivated as all the guys here want to play in Super League A.”

Johnson has represented the Western Province Disas in the past and has been a member of the DHL Western Province Sevens team. Key to Johnson’ success has been his relationship with head coach Ricky Petersen.

“I’ve only worked under Ricky,” he says. “At NNK, Helderberg, and now Sir Lowrians, he’s been a big influence on my career.”

In what has been a successful season for Masi, Lionel Faroa’s form has really been a highlight for the Noordhoek-based club.

Aside from being one of the side’s most effective attacking players, Faroa is also an accurate goal kicker. His all-round skill set makes him a major asset for the team.

“I’ve got to thank head coach Warren Edwards, who has given me the freedom to play my game,” Farao tells Cape Rugby TV. “As a team, we like to take the ball up through the phases and exploit the space out wide, that’s where my pace comes in.”

Faroa joined the club last season having played for Blue Stars previously.

“It’s a really good vibe here,” he says. “The guys have worked incredibly hard and sacrificed a lot of their time to make this campaign a successful one.”Masiphumelele are currently fighting it out in the Top 9 Champions League and will look to secure promotion to Super League C next season.

“This new structure has been great as it gives the smaller clubs an opportunity to reach the top levels in a shorter space of time.”

If you ask anyone at Rangers who epitomises the club, the name Bom Samaai will most likely come up.

The outside back is one of the most experienced players on the club rugby circuit and a role model at the club.

“My role is very simple,” he tells Cape Rugby TV. “I’m here to guide the youngsters, as an assistant coach and a player.”

Samaai is very well travelled, having played Vodacom Cup with DHL Western Province as well as enjoying a spell in New Zealand, playing ITM Cup with Waikato. His pace and creativity is his biggest assets.

“We’re trying to create a culture of excellence at Rangers”, he adds. “We said at the start of the season that we’re more focused on performance levels than results. In that respect, I feel we’ve had a good season.”

Rangers have always been a club close to his heart: “We’re a community club with a long history. There’s a real sense of family and belonging, and you only have to attend a match to witness it.”

NEW ENERGYSK Walmers, in their 10th consecutive year in Super League A, are implementing exciting plans on and off the field.

SK Walmers have a long and successful history. The club is an amalgamation of the Walmer Estate and Schotsche Kloof communities. They have never played lower

than Super League B since unification in 1992 and have won three national club titles along the way.

The club’s vice-president Moeneeb Levy has overseen a drastic change in player policy at the club.

“At the beginning of the season, we took a strategic decision not to recruit players, but to use our home-grown ones,” he tells Cape Rugby TV. “We lost players to bigger clubs and as a community we needed to regroup.”

Some standout names have come through the SK Walmers ranks. Zhahier Rylands, Adnan Osman and Danwill Erasmus have all played provincially after emerging from the club’s structures.

“We’re extremely proud of the fact that our club has given players the platform to succeed,” says Levy. “We’ve always been a club that has punched above our weight and we’ve always showed determination and ferociousness to succeed.”

At the time of writing, SK Walmers were in eighth place on the log.

“We’re happy with the season,” Levy adds. “There is room for improvement and we’ll go away at the end of the season and begin planning for the future.”

Over the last couple of years, the club has changed its executive committee. This forms part of the club’s plan to build new energy.

“We wanted to change the backroom staff in order to keep things fresh,” says Levy. “We all share a common vision for SK Walmers, but we know we can’t afford to get complacent and we must continue improving.”

Rich HeritageCaledonian Roses are hoping to gain promotion to Super League C.

Caledonian Roses are one of the oldest clubs currently active.

Club president Cassiem Jabaar is a legendary figure at the club, having served as since 1980.

“I was born into this club,” he tells Cape Rugby TV. “My father and grandfather played for them and I started my career as a player here in 1964.”

A community club in the truest sense, Caledonian Roses have a proud heritage.

“We’re a family-orientated club,” says Jabaar. “We’re steeped in tradition and our supporters have grown up with this club in their hearts.”

Caledonian Roses are currently competing in the Top 9 Champions League, having finished second in the City League.

“Our aim is to win trophies and we always play to win,” says Jabaar. “We’ve had a good season, but we need to keep moving in the right direction.

“If we don’t gain promotion this season, you can be sure we’ll be fighting for it next season.”

That spirit has filtered its way down to the other teams at the club. A key part of Callies’ vision is its development of young players.

“We have youth teams ranging from U7 to U19, and we’re incredibly proud of our youth structures,” adds Jabaar. “We have partnerships with several high schools. We let them use our fields to train and on game days, our sponsors will provide them with soup and sandwiches.”

The annual RAG day is a highlight of the club’s season. Their traditional opponents, Young Stars, have re-vamped their youth structures, so they will now compete against Silvertree this year.

anchored by imposing loosehead prop Gavin van den Berg.

The 18-year-old has had an impressive season personally and was selected for the DHL Western Province U18 Craven Week squad.

“Playing Craven Week for the second year was a great experience,” he tells Cape Rugby TV. “The level of competition is really good and it has helped me learn a lot on and off the field.”

Van den Berg is an effective ball carrier, who has a high work-rate in tight play. As a loosehead prop, he makes a great impact at the scrums.

At school level, Van den Berg has excelled and has made the Paarl Gym No 1 jersey his own.

“This was my second year playing 1st XV rugby at Gimmies,” he says. “We were number one in the country last year, which was a great achievement.”

The highlight of their season was undoubtedly the nail-biting 16-15 victory over traditional rivals Paarl Boys’.

“That was a great game,” van den Berg says. “There is always a lot of pressure going into those games as it’s shown on television and watched by thousands.”

“We do a lot to try to raise funds for our youth teams,” he says. “Our second annual golf day at the Wellington Golf Club was a real highlight.

“Most of the boys who have joined us at a young age tend to stay with the club for a long time. Some of our 1st XV guys will help with the coaching, so there is a real sense of community and loyalty here at Young Peoples.”

Heyns is particularly excited about the U18 side at the club.

“They’re a very promising group of players and will be playing first team rugby soon,” he adds.

Young Peoples are one of two Paarl clubs that don’t play in the region. Currently in Super League B, the club has one of the youngest seniors teams on the provincial scene.

“About 80% of our senior squad has come through our youth system,” club chairman Jacques Heyns tells Cape Rugby TV. “We strongly believe in giving our younger guys a chance as early as possible.”

The club currently has U11, U13, U18, and U20 teams. The youth structure has been altered slightly recently, but has yielded positive results for the club.

Most of the youth players come from the local schools. Paarlzicht Primary and New Orleans Secondary are the two biggest feeder schools.

Which clubs are you associated with?I am currently registered with Maties.

Do you ever take the time to watch club rugby games?I try to watch as often as possible. If ever I have time off, I go to Stellenbosch University to watch Maties as I have friends who play for the club. I also watch many Varsity Cup games.

Do you feel that club rugby is beneficial to a player’s development?Very much so. You only have to look around the DHL Western Province dressing room to see guys who have come through the club rugby structures. Competitions, like the Varsity Cup, are great, especially in terms of getting your degree and preparing for life after rugby.

What do you make of the talent identification system at DHL Western Province? It’s certainly assists with bringing younger players

through. The development programs that are in place have ensured that the best junior players out there are given a chance to excel at a higher level.

Any advice to club rugby players out there?Keep working hard. Don’t let something like injuries get you down and never give up on your goals. If you work hard, things have a way of falling into place.

Province players about their connection to club scene.

Dyllan Francke is in his third year as a club rugby referee and is enjoying the experience.

“Club games can be tough, but they’re really enjoyable to officiate,” he tells Cape Rugby TV. “Now that I’ve become used to it, I’m really starting to enjoy it.”

Francke has always wanted to be a professional referee, a dream which manifested itself during his school days.

“I always had a passion to play rugby,” he says. “I went to Paarl Gym and the other rugby players were a lot bigger than me, so I decided to take up refereeing instead!”

Dyllan Francke is a young referee with a bright future.

BEHIND THE WHISTLE

The 21-year old is a Division 2 referee and he is happy to continue his development.

“The Western Province Rugby Union has done a good job in ensuring the growth and development of young referees,” he says. “They’ve started projects that have seen a lot of young referees come through the system.

“I’d love to make the SARU Panel in the future, but for now, I’m concentrating on growing as a referee,” he adds. “Club Rugby is the perfect platform for me to improve and grow as a rugby official.”

WOMEN’S PROFILE

MEGAN KANNEMEYERMILNERTON

Age: 19Height: 1.65mWeight: 58kgPosition: CentreSchool: Bernadino Heights

Young centre Megan Kannemeyer is benefiting from the experienced heads at Milnerton. She joined the club at the beginning of the year and is enjoying her surroundings.

“It’s a very good club,” she tells Cape Rugby TV. “Having Nolene Oosthuizen run it has been great for women’s rugby as she is very passionate.”

Kannemeyer played for DHL Western Province U18 last year and made her senior debut at the beginning of the season. She is one of several bright young talents coming through the system.

“The DHL Western Province system is very professional,” she says. “There are structures in place that assist with the development of young talent.”

Kannemeyer is very quick and likes the defensive side of rugby. At Milnerton, she is surrounded by several provincial players and is benefiting from this mentorship.

“I look up to the senior players and I never hesitate to ask for their advice,” she adds.

Kannemeyer hopes to make the Springbok Women’s squad in the near future, but is currently concentrating on being consistent for both club and province.

COACH’S CORNER

Tell us about your background. As a player, I’ve played Craven Week and Vodacom Cup rugby for DHL Western Province. I played for Tygerberg in their glory years, as well as for Helderberg and Bellville South. I’ve coached NNK, Helderberg, and now Sir Lowrians. In 2008, I started coaching the DHL Western Province sevens team.

How did you end up at Sir Lowrians?I was at a stage in my coaching career when it was time to move on. I was excited by the hunger and

IMPRESSIVE PEDIGREERicky Petersen is building a strong foundation at Sir Lowrians.

ambition of the club. They needed someone with Super League A experience. Sir Lowrians have a very professional set-up.

How do you think the season has gone so far?The table doesn’t lie and we’ve been fighting for top spot for the majority of the season. In that respect, it’s been a good season. We’ve shown great commitment, and we’re a talented and experienced squad. However, that means nothing without total commitment.

How did you find the World Club Sevens Championships? It was a great experience. When you consider that our side was made up completely of amateur club rugby players, we had an exceptional tournament. To finish fourth in that tournament was a great achievement and it really helped to put our local guys on the map. Sevens rugby has given our local guys another platform to showcase their skills.

How has your role as coach of the DHL Western Province Sevens team influence the game plan at Sir Lowrians?I’ve got a passion for both the sevens and 15-man game. There are several skills in sevens that can be transferred to 15s, so I’ve tried to combine the two.

You’ve played and coached in the Helderberg region for most of your career, any particular reason for that? The talent here is incredible. If anyone wanted to start a rugby club, I would advise

them to start one in the Helderberg region. If you look at our team, 95% of our players

are are home-grown talent.
