PRESIDENT’S LETTER

WORD FROM CAPE RUGBY TV

We’re now at the business-end of the club rugby season and teams are using all of their resources to secure a successful

finish. The new league format means more games and more opportunities for silverware, and it’s up to the clubs to grab those opportunities with both hands.

We get several requests from our audience to cover their games, and as with any television show, our delivery is limited to

how much airtime and budget we have.

As such, we’ve promoted quite vigorously that clubs

@jpnaude

Throughout the season it has been clear to me that each club and division has a story to tell. There have been comebacks, unbeaten runs and standout performances that have really captivated supporters.

The highlight of the past weekend had to be the derby between Primrose and SK Walmers at Rosemead Avenue. This is a game steeped in culture and tradition; the on-field action did not disappoint the thousands in attendance.

The DHL Western Province sevens team is in London this week for the World Club 7s, having done so well in Limerick last weekend. Good luck to coach Ricky Petersen and his team.

Congratulations to DHL Western Pronvince, who got their Currie Cup campaign off to a great start with a 35-16 win over the EP Kings. We are back at DHL Newlands this week, with our U19, U21 and senior teams all in action against the Bulls.

Let me end off by wishing our clubs the best of luck for their games this weekend. You’ve worked hard, but there’s still plenty to do!Thelo WakefieldWPRFU PRESIDENT

should send us content. This can be in video or picture format. Once we get these in, it’s fairly easy for us to place it on TV, provided the quality is usable.

Not only can we share your imagery, but we can also assist with other exposures, such as displaying your club jersey on the set. This is a great way for your club to get exposure, once again leading to the possibility of sponsorship.

You might even want to showcase your club community activity; this is also an option and is sharable on our community noticeboard. It is, however, incumbent on the administrators or delegates at the clubs to send us this content.

Once again, this leads in the direction of who at your club is going to do it. I strongly suggest finding a passionate and capable fan at your club to recruit as your media officer. It’s a great way to begin promoting your club. So why not get started now? It’s never too late.

Have a fantastic rugby weekend,

MATCH DETAILS

8 CAPE RUGBY MAGAZINE / Issue 14

There are certain club fixtures across all divisions that hold plenty of history and tradition on and off the field. Primrose versus SK Walmers is one of those rivalries.

At a packed-out stadium at Rosemead Avenue, in front of over 5000 supporters, both clubs shared a moment of silence for the situation in Palestine, as well as for Yazeed Kasu, the SK Walmers player who tragically past away not too long ago.

During the match, the two clubs came out guns blazing in what was a feast of running rugby. The massive crowd was treated to steps, shimmies, and fancy footwork as both sides looked to put on a show.

Primrose, newcomers to Super League A, had the better of the opening exchanges and looked to have grabbed a tight win, but SK Walmers forced the stalemate following a late attack.

Primrose and SK Walmers drew 23-23 in their Super League A derby.

This was a very good game. There’s a lot of history between the two clubs. SK game out guns blazing in

the second half and they took it to us. We set ourselves high standards and we’re chuffed with where we are positioned in the league. We’ll go forward from here.

RITO HLUNGWANIPRIMROSE COACH

I must give thanks to SK for playing the game in good spirits. The odds were against us

playing against a side that has been in Super League A for a long time but we could have

won this game. We gave it to them at the end. For our first time in Super League A we’ve had

a good season and we’ll build from this.

We’ve progressed well after a few defeats and we’ve ticked a few boxes. We’re

at the business end of the season now. A draw isn’t always what you want and it’s

a bit like kissing your sister! There’s a lot of local talent here. We always knew the crowd

was going to be big and the atmosphere electric, but we prepared for this game as we would for any other. It could’ve gone

either way at the end.

ADNAAN BASIERSK WALMERS COACH

We’ll take the two points. We’ve been on a long break, so it was

tough to adjust, but we still feel like we’re in with a shout of that top-six

place on the log. There is a rich history between the two clubs and

we wanted to put on a spectacle for the crowd.

Division: Super League AMatch: Durbell v HamiltonsVenue: Durbanville Sports GroundThis game will have great implication for both clubs. Hamiltons are chasing the title and will look to keep up the pace at the top, while Durbell have their sights set on a top-six finish. Durbell have been in great form recently and will be a real handful on their home ground. Both teams boast impressive forward power, so expect a titanic struggle up front.

Division: Super League BMatch: St George’s v MacassarVenue: GustrouwSt George’s pulled off one of the upsets of the season when they beat Villager at Brookside last weekend. That victory cemented their place as legitimate title contenders and they’ll be looking to build on that momentum when they host Macassar in this weekend’s derby fixture. Macassar have had an inconsistent season, but on their day, can be a match for anyone.

Division: Super League CMatch: Eerste River v Mannenberg RangersVenue: Eerste River Sports GroundsRangers will look to distance themselves from the relegation battle when they travel to fellow strugglers Eerste River. Both sides have had disappointing seasons, but have shown flashes of impressive play. There’s plenty to compete for in this one with Super League C status hanging in the balance.

Division: Top 9 Champions LeagueMatch: Blue Jets v Young StarsVenue: Khayelitsha StadiumBlue Jets are back in front of their home faithful after last week’s game against Blue Stars. They will be hoping to continue their good form when they

host Young Stars. Stars have been consistent force this season and both sides know that a victory here will go a long way to securing a promotion place.

Division: City League Top 8Match: Police v Busy BeesVenue: Terry TerblanchePolice have endured a disappointing season by all accounts, but a victory here will help boost morale around the club. Busy Bees are one of the stronger teams in the competition and will no doubt be up for another challenge this weekend.

Division: Northern League Top 8Match: Whistling Wheels v AtlantisVenue: Eerste River Sports GroundBoth sides finished the regular season in the bottom half of the table and will have points to prove this weekend. Whistling Wheels are unbeaten in this division so far and will look to maintain that momentum.

Division: Southern League Top 8Match: Richmond Rangers v RetreatVenue: EppingThis is a clash between two sides that have made a good start to the new competition and will be looking to pull away from the pack as the log begins to take shape. Rangers endured a very disappointing regular season, losing all their games, but have looked a different side in the Southern League Top 8.

Division: Simonsberg RegionMatch: Pumas v KhayamandiVenue: Wesbank Sports GroundPumas have been in sensational form this season, losing just two games. They will look to pull away from the chasing pack when they host Khayamandi this weekend. A win here will go a long way to securing the title.

Brandon Adams is one of Retreat’s young stars making a big name for himself.

The versatile back can play in three positions as he relishes the chance to showcase his all-round skills.

“We had a slow start to the season,” he tells Cape Rugby TV. “Now we are hitting our strides and building great form.”

Retreat had a good finish to the regular season and upset the apple cart when they became the only team to beat Masiphumelele in the Southern League.

“That game was unbelievable,” recalls Adams. “I remember being so nervous before hand but we played unbelievably well.”

Adams is the impact player in the team as he can slot in at scrumhalf, flyhalf, and centre. His versatility makes him a big challenge for the opposition as his wide range of skills has inspired his team-mates.

Now in the Top 8 in the Southern League, Adams is excited about playing more rugby.

“This new format is great as its gives us a chance to play more, which is a wonderful thing. As a club, we need to continue our good form.”

BRANDON ADAMSRETREAT

Constantia loosehead prop Conrad Tana is loving life at his new club.

“Constantia United was formed this year, so I was excited about the new challenge,” he tells Cape Rugby TV. “It’s fun and exciting to play for a new team.

“Of course, there are challenges being a new club on the scene, but the structures are good and there is a strong support base here.”

Tana is known for his strength and he is a key weapon in the tight phases.

“My scrumming and lineout contributions are my biggest strengths,” he says.

The Simonsberg Region is often overlooked in the club rugby space, but is one of the most competitive leagues this year. Constantia United are right in the mix for the title.

“We definitely want to win this league,” says Tana. “We’ve been putting in a lot effort and we know we can do it.”

At 25, Tana is one of the older heads at the club. His experience has been a key factor in Constantia’s good season.

Clarence Hansen is one of the standout talents at Macassar and is currently a member of the Western Province Disas squad.

“It’s a huge honour for me to be selected,” he tells Cape Rugby TV. “To have someone like Isma-eel Dollie notice me is a huge confidence boost.”

Macassar are known for their dangerous backline, which can strike from anywhere. Hansen, a sevens specialist, is flourishing thanks to this open and expansive game plan.

“I love to run and step, so playing at Macassar suits my strengths perfectly,” he says.”

The club has had an up-and-down season, but is now beginning to hit their straps.

“We had a meeting during the break and decided that we needed to put in a greater effort to improve. Thankfully, we have done so and we’re going for that top-six position.”

Hansen has previously made DHL Western Province sevens selection, and hopes to do so again in the near future.

“I’d love to make the sevens team and to play under head coach Ricky Petersen again. That’s where I play my best rugby.”

Leaving a club is hard. Leaving a club where you grew up learning the game is an even greater challenge.

This is exactly the tough decision that scrumhalf Bernard Titus had to make when he was based at Hands and Hearts and approached to join NNK.

“It was incredibly tough leaving Hands & Heart”, he tells Cape Rugby TV. “My parents are involved at the club and I’ve spent my entire rugby career there.”

This season has been tough for Super League A newcomers NNK.

“The step-up to Super League A is massive,” explains Titus. “The players are much bigger and stronger. I am enjoying the intensity, though, and my game has improved a lot.”

Titus is a sevens specialist, something he no doubt learned at Hands & Heart, and loves any chance he gets to use his quick feet and agility in broken play. “I definitely prefer Sevens. It suits my type of rugby,” he says.

Adams is hoping to make the DHL Western Province sevens squad in the future.

BUILDING MOMENTUMDurbell are making great progress in Super League A.

When the Durbanville and Bellville rugby clubs merged in 2002, it marked the beginning of a new era. Durbell were formed and they have been a

consistent force in Super League A ever since.

Match secretary Jean Damant has been with the club since its inception and has experienced many highs during this time.

“We played in the Community Cup last year, which was a great experience,” he tells Cape Rugby TV. “This year, we won the inaugural Community Challenge and it was nice to get a bit of silverware.”With the new format allowing only one game versus each side, Damant knows that taking maximum points is a must.

“It really comes down to points difference. We need to pick up as many points as possible to keep up with the pace.”

Much of the club’s recent success has been down

to the role of head coach Jan Loubser, something Damant is eager to point out.

“Jan is a great man-manager,” Damant explains. “The club has lost a lot of players to the Western Province sides, but Jan has managed to keep us competitive. He brought through a lot of youngsters in the Community Challenge, which helped with our squad depth.”

A very important part of the club is their youth structures.

“Our U20s are very important to us,” says Damant. “We look to fast-track them into the 1st XV and look to give them exposure. Most of the guys on the bench on match days will come from the U20 side.”

At the time of writing, Durbell were challenging for a top-six place.

“We had a tough start, but we are coming back strongly,” Damant says. “We feel that we can make a real push for that top-six spot.”16 CAPE RUGBY MAGAZINE / Issue 14

PROUD HERITAGEViolets have a rich history and culture that’s embedded in the club.

In terms of an underdog story, the history of Violets fits the bill. The club has been on an impressive incline in recent seasons, which has provided a

positive turnaround to previous disappointments.

Director of coaching Moegamat Gallant explains that it has certainly been an eventful road.

“It has been a long journey for us at Violets,” Gallant tells Cape Rugby TV. “It’s been filled with adversity and challenges and although much time has been spent at the grindstone, the hard work doesn’t stop. It can’t stop.”

The club has experienced recent success, which includes winning the old Division Three title in 2011 and winning back-to-back promotions over the past two seasons.

“To add to our successes, Violets are now a certified fully-functional non-profit organisation, that provides the community with rugby as an

alternative to the social diseases currently plaguing the youth in Lansdowne,” says Gallant.

The club currently competes in Super League C and are on course for a top-six finish.

“Our executive committee is small, but effective,” says Gallant. “They’ve been successful in harnessing the talents of this special group of players, who have showed extraordinary commitment and courage towards achieving the unthinkable.”

The club boasts a vibrant youth set-up. In 2009, Violets entered a side into the WP U20 league for the very first time with the intention of retaining talented rugby boys at the club. Added to this, there are four high-school teams and four primary school teams.

“The club has always emphasised our junior structures with players based from our community,” explains Gallant.

scene, while he’s also spearheaded DHL Western Province to the U18 Academy Week crown.

“That was a great experience for me,” he tells Cape Rugby TV. “Winning all our games was a big achievement, especially when you consider the high level of competition.”

Meyer is a born leader and has captained DHL Western Province from U13 to U18. That leadership quality makes him a standout talent.

The 18-year-old is a physical player, who makes an impact with ball in hand. He boasts impressive attacking and defensive qualities, and has assisted with many tries throughout the year.

At school level, Paul Roos has had a good season, losing only two games. Meyer starred in their 27-13 victory over Paarl Gym.

Meyer is a one of the many talents coming out of Western Province’s talent identification system.

“DHL Western Province are doing a good job,” he says. “There is a lot of talent at school level and the players benefit from the exposure and experience they receive.”

to give our boys every possible opportunity to better themselves.”

The club currently has youth teams ranging from U7 to U19. They also have partnerships with local schools like West End Primary in Mitchell’s Plain, who provide fields for training and matches. “There must be a synergy between us and our community schools,” says Brink.

“We’re a community club, so we need to produce young talent to sustain ourselves. We’re not just looking to produce good rugby players; we want to produce great role models.”

If you look at most clubs in the top divisions, chances are that they will have a player who came out of Collegians’ youth structures. Ridhaa Damon (False Bay) and Adnan Osman (SK Walmers) are two such

players.

“You could say our youth set-up is a springboard for other teams!” club chairman Armien Brink tells Cape Rugby TV. “We are incredibly proud of our production line. DHL Western Province and Stormers loose forward Nizaam Carr began at Collegians and he still comes to watch games when he has the time.”

A key part of their set-up is the education of their players. “We understand that rugby is a vehicle for players to get college bursaries,” says Brink. “We want

Which clubs have you represented?I played for UCT in 2011 and have been affiliated with the club for the last three years.

What is your fondest memory of club rugby? It would have to be winning the Varsity Cup in 2011. That team was special and really put a lot of guys on the map. Many strong friendships were made that season.

How has club rugby helped you?It gave me a lot of exposure. The Varsity Cup made people take notice of me and it was a great stepping stone in my career.

Has it been good playing with some of your Varsity Cup team-mates at DHL Western Province and the DHL Stormers? It’s great to keep that bond going. It’s nice to see how the guys have progressed from Varsity Cup to the professional space.

Do you feel that DHL Western Province is doing enough with its young talent? It’s a really tough job when you consider just how many good schools and amateur competitions there are. The talent pool is massive in the Western Province region. When you look at the young names coming through, it’s obvious that Western Province is willing to take a chance on these young guys, which can only benefit the union as a whole.

Do you have any advice to club rugby players?Follow your dreams and have fun doing it. If you’re good enough, age will not be a barrier. As hard as people train, make sure you train harder.

Bennie Bothma is a Division 1 official and has taken charge of club rugby games since 2008. He began

refereeing high school games in 1999 and was selected to be on the primary schools referees panel in 2011.

“As a player, I represented Boland at age-group level,” Bothma tells Cape Rugby TV. “I took up refereeing in 1999 as a way to stay involved in the game.”

Bothma loves the physical exercise that comes with refereeing.

“I love to run around and maintain a good level of fitness. Refereeing is a part of rugby, which allows me to continue to participate in the game that I love.”

Bennie Bothma has been involved in refereeing since 1999.

BEHIND THE WHISTLE

He has set his sights on being included in SARU referees panel, but for now is enjoying being involved in club rugby.

“Club rugby is very intense and physical,” he says. “It’s become a lot more professional and players are better conditioned.”

One game that stands out for him is the recent Super League A clash between Maties and Belhar, which Maties just edged 15-13.

“That was an amazing game to referee. The crowd was great and the level of rugby played was superb. I like it when both teams play running rugby; it makes it easier for us referees!”

WOMEN’S PROFILE

ABIGAIL JANTJIESPNIEL VILLAGERS

Age: 26Height: 1.63mWeight: 89kgPosition: HookerHigh School: New Orleans Secondary

Abigail Jantjies (right) has been around the club scene for a while. She began playing the game at school level and quickly showed her talent.

“It was a choice between rugby and netball for me,” she tells Cape Rugby TV. “I had to go with my heart and I haven’t looked back since.”

Janjties gets to put on a rugby jersey for club and province. Her club, Pniel Villagers, has enjoyed a very good season and at the time of writing, was on top of the Western Province Women’s League.

“There are a lot of women in the area who are keen on playing rugby, so the club is in a healthy space,” she says.

Jantjies is a physical hooker, who can also play prop. Her versatility has made her an invaluable asset for DHL Western Province.

She already has one eye on a coaching career when her playing days are over.

“I’ve already completed my Level 1 and 2 coaching courses,” she explains.

COACH’S CORNER

Tell us about you background.I was a player at Strand for almost eight years. In 2011, I began my first stint at Raithby as their assistant coach. In 2012, I returned to Strand as their fitness and conditioning coach before I moved to St George’s in 2013. At the beginning of this year, I was approached by Raithby to coach at the club again.

What was it about Raithby that attracted you? There is huge support here. Raithby is a small town, but the supporters always come out in their

AMAZING ACCOLADESRaithby Universals Coach Jeremy Jansen has led his side to an amazing season in Super League C.

numbers. On the field, we’re a fun, committed group and the players always give 100%. There is great chemistry within the squad and my support staff is very helpful.

What do you make of the club’s amazing season? To win your first 11 games is a great achievement. We’re definitely exceeding many expectations. We had a good pre-season camp, but our goal was always to make a top-six place. I must give credit to the players, who have given everything they could this season.

Do you have a particular coaching philosophy?I like to play balanced rugby. I take a lot of pride in having a fit and conditioned team. You’ll see when

we play that during the last 15 minutes of the match, our guys really lift the intensity against our opponents.

What are the biggest challenges you face?Keeping the guys motivated and coming to training. Luckily, I’ve got a strong group of leaders around me, who have helped keep the squad united.

What are your goals for the rest of the season?

We’ve got to build on what we’ve got. We know it’s going to be

difficult next season. A big goal of the club wants to

achieve is to strengthen our U20 teams.
