PRESIDENT’S LETTER

WORD FROM CAPE RUGBY TV

Club rugby is back in full swing this weekend as teams continue to battle it out for promotion places. We’re

at the stage of the season where clubs are starting to use all the resources available to them to ensure they are in the best possible position to secure a great finish.

We will now see the term “Community Club” in full

The season started off with many doubts about the new format. It’s taken some time to understand

it, and I’m sure there is still some confusion. Of course, we’ll have to shout this from the mountain tops before everyone gets it.

@jpnaude

action as fans, administrators, players and coaches come together in one final push for glory.

The past couple of weeks have seen our youth sides continue to do extremely well and credit must go to the union and their talent identification system that has ensured that rugby in Western Province has never been healthier. There were good wins for both our DHL WP U21 and U19 teams in Durban over the weekend as they beat the Sharks juniors by 47-15 and 30-15 respectively.

The DHL Western Province team is currently hard at work for the upcoming Absa Currie Cup, which kicks off on 8 August.

Congratulations are in order to the Springbok Sevens, who won gold at the Commonwealth Games, beating arch rivals New Zealand 17-12 in a thrilling final. It was great seeing new DHL Western Province recruit Seabelo Senatla and centre Justin Geduld excel in the tournament and we have no doubt both of them will bring an excitement factor to the team during the Currie Cup.

Thelo WakefieldWPRFU PRESIDENT

We are now entering the ‘second’ phase of the club rugby season. There is the Top 9 “Champions League”, as well as the new competition for the bottom eight sides in the City, Northern, and Southern Leagues. The Paarl Region are already into their top and bottom league challenges. More rugby means more exposure for our clubs and players.

The three Super Leagues are wrapping up their fixtures and will shortly begin their Presidents Cup Top 6 competition, another new addition to the club rugby format. Now more than ever, there is something to play for in every match. This is where club rugby comes alive; if the fans can come to grips with the season’s format, we’ll really see the rugby fever climbing.

In addition to that, the Currie Cup season is about to kick off. With all of the above combined, it feels like the beginning of a whole new season.

Have a fantastic rugby weekend

HANDS AND HEARTS WIN DRAMATIC DERBY

Result: Hands and Hearts 30 Brackenfell 24Division: Super League BVenue: Eikendal

MATCH DETAILS

It was a tough game today and the conditions were not great. We got the bonus point which was great. We’ve got a lot of hard work to do

in the coming games.

XZENOPHINE HAELHANDS AND HEARTS CAPTAIN

Our boys showed character today. We planned to play running rugby, but the

conditions didn’t suit us. We went for territory and managed to convert that pressure into points. A lot of decisions went against us, so we’re happy

to come away with the win.

PETER LINKSHANDS AND HEARTS COACH

8 CAPE RUGBY MAGAZINE / Issue 12

In a game played in tough conditions, Hands and Hearts continued their push for a top-six place in Super League B with a narrow 30-24 win over rivals Brackenfell.

The wet, muddy conditions did not suit Hands and Hearts’ traditional running game and they were forced to front up physically and play a more tactical plan.

Hands and Hearts flyhalf Daniel Philander was one of the outstanding performers with his accurate kicking and tactical awareness.

Brackenfell were in the game right up until the final moments before Hands and Hearts’ Gershwin Manuel scored a late intercept try to claim the bonus-point victory for his side.

A late intercept try secured Hands and Hearts a derby win over Brackenfell.

This was an unbelievable game for both teams. I’m proud of the

guys for the character shown out there, especially the forwards. The conditions made it hard for us to

play our natural game.

DANIEL PHILANDERHANDS & HEARTS FLYHALF EVOX MAN OF THE MATCH

Congratulations must go to Hands and Hearts for the way

they played. We didn’t execute our game plan properly and we’re disappointed with the result. We’ve lost our last few games and it’s been our own

fault, so we’ve got to keep working hard.

Division: Super League AMatch: False Bay v UWCVenue: Phillip Herbstein StadiumFalse Bay goes into this one knowing that a slip-up will end their push for that Community Cup place. The Bay have been outstanding this season and will hope their hard work does not end in heartbreak. They host a UWC side that has underperformed this year, but they come off a resounding win over Tygerberg in their last match.

Division: Super League BMatch: Villager v Hands and HeartsVenue: Brookside Sports GroundVillager desperately need a win here to keep pace with Sir Lowrians at the top of Super League B. This season has been an incredibly competitive one in Super League B and the title race looks like going down to the wire. Hands and Hearts visit Brookside knowing a win here will go a long way to securing a top-six finish.

Division: Super League CMatch: Raithby Universals v LangaVenue: Raithby Sports FieldThis is Cape Rugby TV’s pick of the weekend. Raithby are the only side in all divisions with a 100% win record. They have been simply electric and have played some thrilling rugby. They host a Langa side that has been equally impressive, losing just once as they come off a hard-fought victory over Paarl. Expect fireworks at Raithby as these two fantastic sides go head-to-head.

Division: Top 9 Promotion LeagueMatch: Young Stars v Blue StarsVenue: Green Point TrackBoth teams ended their regular season as winners of the City and Northern Leagues respectively. The stars will come out in this champion versus champion battle. Both teams have been impressive so far and will hope to maintain that form to gain promotion to Super League C.

Division: City League Top 8Match: Young Ideas v Busy BeesVenue: Langa StadiumThe second round of group games for teams who finished in positions from 4-11 in their respective leagues takes place this weekend. In the City League, Young Ideas host Busy Bees. Young Ideas finished one point above Busy Bees in the regular season and will hope to get one over their rivals. Busy Bees will be disappointed that they missed out on a top-three finish as they were league leaders for a period.

Division: Northern League Top 8Match: Strand Pioneers v AtlantisVenue: AbbattoirIt’s been a nightmare campaign for Strand Pioneers, who have yet to win a game this season. They go into this clash against Atlantis looking to finally get their names on the board. Perhaps this second round of fixtures will serve as a fresh start for this popular club.

Division: Southern League Top 8Match: Thistles v PeninsulaVenue: Metropolitan Sports FieldThistles host Peninsula in their opening game of the Top 8 league. This will come as fresh start for the club who has endured an inconsistent campaign. Thistles host a Peninsula side whose good form came a little too late to claim a top-three finish, but will no doubt come out firing in this encounter.

Division: Simonsberg RegionMatch: Faure v ConstantiaVenue: Macassar Sports FieldsFaure will be hoping to keep pace with the league leaders when they host Constantia this weekend. Both sides have had solid seasons. A win for Constantia will send them above Faure in the table, so there’s all to play for.

Bradley Green is one of the experienced heads at Elsies River, having started at the club back in 1997.

“This club is close to my heart,” he tells Cape Rugby TV. “I grew up across the road from the field and I have family involved in the club.”

Green has spent time in England playing both rugby league and union. He explains that his experience in league has influenced his game.

“I play a counter-attacking, high risk style of rugby which comes from league. I believe in having ball possession and not kicking it away.”

Green also represented Western Province at U19 level before leaving for Europe.

It’s been a difficult season for Elsies, but they remain in the hunt for a top-six finish.

“We’ve lost a lot of players to injuries,” Green says. “The new format has made travelling tough, but we’re not making excuses. We know we have a lot of hard work to do but there’s a lot of talent here.”

Green is in the twilight of his career, but has adjusted his game accordingly, ensuring he keeps up with the youngsters.

Marlin Carolus is the playmaker of the Kraaifontein side that has just begun to turn the corner in Super League B, after a disappointing start.

It’s his fifth year at the club, having begun as a junior. He’s hoping that Kraaifontein’s recent run of good form will continue.

“Our victory over Sir Lowrians was huge for us and there’s been a change in the team atmosphere since then,” he tells Cape Rugby TV. “We’ve been working hard and pulling together, so I’m confident we’ll end the season strongly.”

Carolus is a player who likes to create space for his outside backs. He’s keen to begin building for the future with his young team.

“We have the youngest front row in the league and there is a lot of talent here. We’re building a side to challenge for the title in the future,” he explains

Personally, Carolus is hoping to make the WP Disas squad in the near future.

Peninsula has had a solid season in the Southern League, with their Ccptain Daniel Kandan leading from the front.

“Even though I stay far, there is only one club for me,” he tells Cape Rugby TV. “The camaraderie and the brotherhood here is great. It’s all for one and one for all at Peninsula.”

The scrumhalf is well travelled and is back playing rugby after a year out with a torn ACL.

“It’s been an up-and-down season for me. I’m just coming back from a serious injury and getting back to fitness took some time,” he explains.

Kandan is an experienced player, who likes to get as involved as possible.

“I like getting into rucks and mauls and enjoy the defensive side. I love a good tackle. The team tells me I should be a flank!” he says.

As one of the older heads, Kandan is aware of the responsibility on his shoulders.

“We play a forward-based game, but we’re trying to change that by bringing in a new breed of youngsters. Our average age is 23-24 so I’ll be passing on my experience.”

Young scrumhalf Jason van Rooyen is beginning to make a name for himself after several eye-catching performances in Super League A.

The Kuils River No 9 is quick and elusive with a good step and is enjoying every minute of his first Super League A experience.

“My first thought after we got promoted was that this was going to be a tough competition,” he tells Cape Rugby TV. “As the season has gone on, I’ve adjusted my game and it’s been a lot easier.”

This is Van Rooyen’s second year as a senior at the club, having played with them as a junior.

“I love this club. On game days, there is music playing when you run out, which adds to the atmosphere. I’m enjoying playing with my friends.”

Last year he made the 30-man Western Province Amateur squad but was not selected for the final team. He’s hoping to go one better this season and if he keeps up these performances, he’ll be well on his way.

“I want to make the WP Disas team badly. After that it’s onwards and upwards.”

POSITIVE ENERGYIt’s been a good season for Milnerton as a top-six place in Super League B beckons.

Super League B has been very competitive this season as several sides have traded top position in the standings. One of the teams fighting for top spot is Milnerton.

“It’s been an interesting season,” club chairperson Nolene Oosthuizen tells Cape Rugby TV. “Before we started, we were told that we would be the league’s punching bags and now we’re on course for promotion!”

Founded in 1973, the club has been on a steady incline over the years.

“We’ve got a good mix of youth and experience at the club,” Oosthuizen says. “This is a family club and a lot of players who once left have already come back. Players bring their girlfriends and families to game days, so it’s always a good atmosphere.”

This season, the club is benefiting from the experienced coaching pair of head coach Isma-eel Dollie and assistant coach Adi Jacobs.

“Ish and Adi have given us a different dynamic,” said Oosthuizen. “Both are experienced guys with impressive playing careers, so their involvement is a huge incentive to our younger guys. Adi, in particular, has been great with developing our U20s.”

Apart from the senior team success, the club’s 2nd and 3rd XVs are having great seasons and at the time of writing, were leading their divisions.

“We found that if the structures are good, it filters down to the playing field,” Oosthuizen says. “Our 1st XV is on course for promotion and we know it’s a huge step-up. The administrators are a little nervous about making the step-up so soon, but the players can’t wait!”

Another success story is the growth of women’s rugby at Milnerton.

“There was a great need for a women’s side in the area. We’ve had a lot of Western Provinces senior women come to watch and lend a hand as well,” Oosthuizen explains.

HIGH AMBITIONSYoung Wesley’s are fighting for promotion to Super League C

Situated in the heart of Klipfontein, Young Wesley’s RFC is steeped in tradition. Founded in 1952, they have experienced many ups and downs in their history, but continue to maintain their community club ethos.

Vice chairperson Phillip Daniels is optimistic about the club’s future.

“Although we come from a disadvantaged area, there is a love of rugby here,” he tells Cape Rugby TV. “We’re currently in the top-nine promotion league and we have every intention to win it.”

Young Wesley’s finished third in the Southern League and boasted one of the league’s best attacks. Daniels is very proud of all the hard work that’s gone into this season.

“Although we have some talented players here, it’s really been a team effort this season,” he says. “From the administrators down to the coaches and players, we’re one big family at Young Wesley’s.”

One of their standout performers this season has been captain Enrico Wiehahn.

“Enrico has really led from the front this season and is one of the best motivators around, we’re incredibly lucky to have him,” says Daniels

“The senior squad is made up of youngsters who have come through our U20 structures,” Daniels continues. “Our players are extremely positive and have thrived under this new format. More rugby means more exposure.”

There is a sense of community around Young Wesley’s. On game days, the club organises transport for their players at their own expense and always looks to lend a hand when one of their players is in need.

Their motto, “Wesley’s, Yes!” acts as a rallying cry for the team to come together and unite.

side. He was also named captain of this year’s DHL Western Province U18 Craven Week squad.

“It was a great experience for me,” he tells Cape Rugby TV. “Craven Week is a great measuring stick as you are playing against the top junior rugby players in the country.”

Venter has also represented South Africa as a junior sevens player. The team was victorious in this year’s African Youth Games - not conceding a single point.

Venter is a physical centre, whose direct running style causes problems for defences and creates space for his backs.

“My tackling and distribution skills are my biggest strengths,” he says.

He is quick to acknowledge the great work done by DHL Western Province in facilitating the growth and development of its youngsters.

“The union really looks after you. The talent identification system here is the best I’ve ever experienced. The union gives you the best chance to succeed.”

off to college, the interest level drops, but we’re starting to end that trend.”

The club has begun to create partnerships with local high schools in order to grow their youth squads. An example of this is Steenberg High, who has come on board as a feeder system. There are currently a handful of players in the 1st XV who have come up through the youth system at the club.

“There is room for improvement, of course,” says Marais. “Ideally, we’d love a forward and a backline coach for each team, but we’re doing well with what we’ve got. All of our youth teams play a fast-tempo running game..”

The club currently has four youth teams, ranging from U14 to U19. Pat Marais is the coach of the U19s side and has seen the level of interest in rugby grow among the juniors.

“I’ve been at the club for 17 years,” Marais tells Cape Rugby TV. “There is a great interest in rugby in the surrounding areas of the club, such as in Atlantis and Steenberg. In the past, we’ve found that once players go

CLUB TO PRO

Which clubs have you represented?I played club rugby in the Eastern Cape before moving to Cape Town. I currently belong to UCT.

How did club rugby help your development?I started playing club rugby when I was 16 years old. I played against much older, much stronger guys, so I learned very quickly to front up physically. When I returned to my own age-group, playing a physical game wasn’t a problem for me as I had that experience.

What is your fondest club memory?I remember when I was younger, I would bunk school to go play rugby. My club was always struggling for players so I would play for the 1st and 2nd teams.

What do you make of club rugby in the Western Province region?Club rugby here is amazing. What’s great about Western Province is that it gives club players the opportunity to advance their careers. Varsity Cup is obviously huge and there is huge support across all divisions and competitions. Club rugby has a professional approach to the game.

What’s your advice for club players out there?Just enjoy the game and opportunities will come. However, when they do, you must be ready to make that step-up. Don’t be afraid to chase that opportunity.

At 50 years old, Beres Andrews is one of the oldest referees currently active, but don’t let that fool you. He maintains a high standard whenever he takes the field.

“I don’t look and feel 50!” Andrews tells Cape Rugby TV. “I refereed an U19 game earlier this year and I was fitter than some of those boys!”

He took up refereeing seven years ago after hanging up his playing boots.

“I knew I couldn’t just stay at home, I needed something to do,” he explains.

Andrews is a Grade 2 referee, which means he is

qualified to officiate Super League C games, as well as the lower divisions. His favourite game this season was Young Ideas versus Busy Bees.

He is well aware of the importance of preparation for each game.

“I do my prep work at home. I make sure I’m well aware of the style of rugby that both teams play so that I ref the game in the right way.”

At 50, Andrews is refereeing purely out of love for the game.

“This is fun for me. I enjoy every match,” he says.

WOMEN’S PROFILE

DANEL ROSSOUWMILNERTON

Age: 33Height: 1.77mWeight: 78kgPosition: FlankHigh School: DF Malan

Danel Rossouw is one of the stalwarts of Western Province women’s rugby. She began playing the game at 22 and has not looked back since.

Her previous clubs include Brackenfell, Goodwood, and Maties. This season she helped start the women’s club at Milnerton and is excited about the possibilities.

“There was a great need for a club in the area,” she tells Cape Rugby TV. “We have a lot of enthusiastic women here and we’re doing great. I’m convinced we’ll take the league.”

Rossouw is a physical loose forward and is the team’s fetcher. She has picked up a fair few injuries over the years. “I’ve had everything from cracked ribs to broken bones, but I love it!” she says.

Rossouw is excited about women’s rugby in the Western Province region.

“I’ve been involved with the union for almost a decade now and the changes I’ve seen have been for the better. Our union is definitely behind the women.”

Rossouw also qualified as a referee two years ago and will be looking to go into that field once she hangs up her boots.

COACH’S CORNER

Tell us about your background. My room-mate in the army was former provincial rugby player Jeremy Thompson. He convinced me to go into coaching when I returned. I began coaching back in the 90s with Kraaifontein U21s. I then moved to NNK before becoming an assistant coach with the DHL Western Province U21s. In 2011, I joined Durbell and the rest is history.

Durbell have had an up-and-down season. What do you put that down to?We’ve lost a lot of players to injuries, as well as some of our younger guys to DHL Western Province. We also had a tough opening set of fixtures playing Maties, UCT and False Bay in quick succession. We’re still on track to make the top six., though.

Durbell won the inaugural Community Challenge this year. How was that experience?Winning any bit of silverware is great, but this competition in particular has the potential to be special. It’s good to mix with Boland as there is a lot of rugby talent there. With the Community Challenge in its infancy, there are a few teething logistical issues, but it’s a very good concept. For fitness reasons, it was great as well.

What is your coaching philosophy?I strongly believe in staying on your feet and making space for the guys out wide. Gaining dominance through your forwards is important, but it counts for nothing if there is no skillset to capitalise on this dominance.

What is your approach to youth players? The youth structures at a club depend on the overall club structure. The Varsity Cup and Community Cup competitions make it easier for youth players to blend in with the 1st XV. I believe in getting a strong mix between youth and experience. At Durbell, we have the older players who handle most of the responsibility

BACK IN BUSINESSDurbell head coach Jan Loubser is using his years of experience to make the club a force again.

and leadership, and the youth players who bring the enthusiasm.

What do you love about Durbell? The spirit of the club is great. I was coaching at a high school before and this was the ideal club for me to come back. There’s no doubting the loyalty and commitment of the players and I never have to worry about players not rocking up to training. What are your goals for the rest of the season? We need to win our remaining games and we’ll be in with a chance of qualifying for the Community Cup, which is where we definitely want to be.
