1. The study of Digital Media is a relatively new and much excitement is herald in its introduction at the Advanced Level of the regional examination body – CXC. It is a good opportunity to showcase your talents, at the same time, it opens the discussions for many problems we having in the digital world.

a. Give an appropriate definition of no more than three (3) sentences what is the term Digital Media (DM). (3 marks)

b. The terms audio, bandwidth and broadband are terms associated with Digital Media. Express the importance of each in the definition. (5 marks)


c. By using a paragraph, construct an understanding of the terms: Capture, Content Integration, Convergence and Compression, expressing how each maybe used in Digital Media. (5 marks)

d. Express what is ‘download media’ and its importance in DM. Is there a great need for its use in DM productions? (3 marks)

e. Expand the acronyms HDTV, HTML, JPEG and GIF. (4 marks)

2. The Digital World is fast advancing itself over the last 30 years or even more. We have moved from Black and White to Colour and even more advancements.

a. Account for the history of DM as to our transition from previous medias using a short paragraph. A diagram if possible maybe used to give this, stating important timeline/points in this evolution. (6 marks)

b. We have moved from Web 1.0 to Web 2.0. What is the major difference between these two web services/applications? (2 marks)

There is so much happening in the Digital Media world that our devices have been dominantly used for social media. Broadband communication on most mobile devices has made social media use sky rocketed.

c. Define the term Social Media and give TWO examples of how popular social medias are used. (4 marks)

d. Name THREE smart phone manufacturers and name TWO devices each produce that promotes the use of Social Medias. (6 marks)


The increasing use of the Internet is just a fingertip away. No more do we have to go to libraries and other places to get a use of this modern 20th century technology. Our lives will never be the same.

e. With the Internet being in such demand, what are two words that have driven its increasing popularity? (2 marks)

3. There are so many different types of DM applications and so many terms to get accustomed to.

a. Explain the use of any THREE of these terms: (6 marks)

b. Explain, using the image of Image 1 and Image 2 below, if necessary, the concept of 2D or 3D art. Expand the meaning of 2D and 3D. (7 marks)

c. The term Digital Audio is not such a new term but more and more persons are using it. Virtual DJ ® software has transformed our Sound Systems and widespread use by Disc Jockeys.

Define the terms: Digital Music, Ring Tones and Sound effects and give with examples how they are used. (7 marks)

4. Black and white cartoons created by Walt Disney such as Popeye and many others are fading out of the memory of today. These were last used in the 1960s.

a. Explain how cartoons have changed in the last 30 years and what impact this had on the production that is given to the market. (8 marks)


b. Comment on the use of any FOUR of the following in today’s cartoons and digital video productions: (12 marks)

5. With respect to the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), as a region we can make use of Digital Media in many ways.

a. Discuss with key points the underlined opportunities that DM present to CARICOM national to meet local demands. Practical and real life examples will be appreciated in your answer. (12 marks)


b. What is the advantage the CARICOM nationals have as they enter for global opportunities in DM? (8 marks)
