Embroidered CCW hats

Dick Powell has worked with Wholesale Embroidery inYarmouth to make CCW

embroidered hats for the club. They are available in khaki with either Velcro or buckle

closure with the club logo for $10 each, netting $2 for the club. They are available for

purchase at club meetings. Thanks, Dick, for setting this up for the club.

Southport presentation

Twenty residents of Southport, a 55+ community in Mashpee, enjoyed a presentation on

woodturning March 16 including a display of turnings, presentation via Powerpoint and a

YouTube of Glenn Lucas turning, and display of assorted blanks, tools, and turning

accessories. Thanks to Denis Casaubon, Clarke, and Robin for sharing our love of

turning with the community!

Based on initial interest from club members tonight after viewing the Mike Mahoney

video, Mike Grady will work to schedule Mike Mahoney via video and real time

interaction with Mike Mahoney in October on a Saturday from 1-4 p.m. There

will likely be 3 topics over the 3 hour session for about $15 per person. This is an

added value to all club members.

The club will purchase the Beads of Courage beads/cards for club members to use

if enough interest is shown in the project. Mike Grady has offered to be a liaison for

the club to transport our boxes out to Western MA for use at Baystate Children's

Hospital in Springfield. See this month's turnings in the Show and Tell section of

the newsletter.

Richard Wright and Clarke donated 10 mahogany blocks and potpourri covers for a

potpourri challenge. Their purpose is to get newer turners participating more. See

the Show and Tell section. Thank you, Richard and Clarke!

Friends Don't Let Friends Breathe Dust

As you are collaborating with other turners, mentoring other turners, or visiting in

someone's shop, check out how others are protecting themselves against dust. Are

they regularly ventilating their shop with fresh air? Are they utilizing a air cleaner with a

clean filter? Are they wearing respiratory protection regularly as they turn and sand? If

not, nudge your friend to do what they should do to be safe. One member was

concerned about a friend who was not protecting himself enough and bought a Powercap

for him--he clearly got the message! Because, friends don't let friends......

Please bring your respiratory protection to the next club meeting for a group photo

that will be submitted to AAW.

AAW Website April Tip of the Month

Sign in to www.woodturner.org and click on Watch at the top. Select

AAW videos and scroll down to the last selection for Mike Mahoney's

video on sheer scraping--4 minutes, 28 seconds. This is a similar format

that we are considering for a Fall 2018 video demo by Mike. Let Mike

Grady know what you think. Check out other videos while you are

there!

Still not a member? Consider the $20, 90 day trial for brand new

members. The trial gives you all of the benefits of full AAW

membership.

Mentoring program

Remember that our club mentoring program is available to all members. About a

dozen club members serve as mentors. New turners will be matched with an experienced

turner who can help you learn the basics. Experienced turners who want to learn more

about a certain technique or project will be matched with a mentor. Sign up for the

program on our website or chat with Dave Arnone or Mike Grady who are chairing the

program for the club. Learn something new and have fun!

Group mentoring at Dave's shop

Thanks, Dave, Bob Reynolds, Mike Grady, and Robin

Also, if you would like to experience working on a variety of size lathes, let Dave know

and he can set up that exposure for you in one shop setting.

Remember that we have mentoring for demonstrators, too.

The Club Tote is filling up! If you have some turnings that you would like to donate

for club sales, please get them to Clarke. We will get you a donation slip for your

taxes along with our thanks. Smaller, inexpensive items tend to sell well. Thanks to Ken

Whitecross and Marc Sitkin for their turnings this month!

CCW Members in the News

This month, Mike Grady has an article in the AAW journal, American Woodturner.

His inspiring article describes a mentoring experience that he had with a member of the

Western MA club. See page 15 in the April journal. Congrats, Mike.

The March demonstration at the Orleans Senior Center was advertised twice in the Cape

Cod Times.

The March 2018 AAW WIT newsletter has a short article and photo of the January

gathering of CCW WIT.

Need supplies?

The club has thin and medium CA glue for $8 per 2 oz. bottle, double backed tape for

$11 per roll, and end grain sealer for $12/gallon. These are available at meetings. You

can also contact Clarke about the end grain sealer. The club makes a small profit on

these bulk purchased items but you save!

Shop safety thought--Expect the Unexpected!

Clarke had a small piece of balanced pine turning at high speed fly off and hit him

directly in the middle of his face shield--would have done some damage without impact

resistant protection. Save your smile!

Toby had a good quality, name brand HSS bowl gouge fracture--no catch was involved--

the piece fell to the floor but could have done very significant damage. Yes, his

Powercap was on.

Sad note for CCW Lou Schlotterbeck, former president of CCW, has passed away recently. Although he has

Featured Demonstration by Wayne Shepard

MAKING A 6” SALT OR PEPPER MILL

Wayne Shepard, Wood Effects 508-420-4224

Materials Needed:

1) One 3” x 3” x 6 5/8” hardwood rectangle kiln dried to 6% if possible--

if blocks are laminated, use Tite Bond #3

2) One 6” salt or pepper mechanism assembly--I prefer Chef Specialties

for the mechanisms. Salt mechanisms are plastic, anodized metal, or

ceramic. Pepper mechanisms are metal.

Page 14: Cape Cod Woodturners · 2018-04-08 · Cape Cod Woodturners Minutes and News April 2018 President Clarke Buchanan welcomed 36 members and guests to the meeting.2018 dues are past

Tools:

1) 4 Jaw Chuck with #2 & #1 (spigot) jaws

2) 2 or 4 prong drive center

3) 60 degree live center

4) ½” key drill chuck with 1 5/8” forestner bit, 7/8” forestner bit

5) 5/16” twist drill bit, 1 1/16” twist drill bit

STEP 1

Mount the hardwood rectangle between the pronged drive center and the live

drive center. Turn to the desired diameter. Make sure both ends are square.

Select the top portion of the mill and cut a 1 ¼” x ½” long tenon. Separate from

the lower portion, leaving the entire tenon on the top portion.

STEP 2

Remove the pronged drive center and replace with the 4 jaw chick with #2 jaws.

Mount the hardwood cylinder (bottom side out). Drill a 1 5/8” hole 1/2” deep.

Next drill a 1 1/16” hole through the center by drilling halfway through and

flipping end for end and completing through.

Page 15: Cape Cod Woodturners · 2018-04-08 · Cape Cod Woodturners Minutes and News April 2018 President Clarke Buchanan welcomed 36 members and guests to the meeting.2018 dues are past

Remove the bottom portion and replace with the top portion tenon side out.

With the 7/8” twist bit, drill a 1/8” deep hole. Here you will need to clean the

7/8” hole a small fraction to accept the mechanism’s turn plate. Now drill

completely through with the 5/16” twist bit. Finish turning and fitting the tenon

to the bottom portion.

STEP 3

Replace the #2 jaws with #1 (spigot) jaws. Grip the bottom of the lower

portion of the mill inside the 1 5/8” opening. Use the 60 degree live center

to secure the top. Turn to the desired shape.

Replace with the top portion gripped by the tenon and held in place with the

60 degree live center. Turn to the desired shape.

Assemble and fit all parts.

STEP 4

Sand and finish outside only with preferred finish. I use an oil based

sanding sealer and 2 coats of Rust-Oleum acrylic spray. Good luck and

have fun!

Thanks, Wayne, for an interesting and informative presentation and a

nice handout!
