FOR SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITYGIvING BACk ANd PROvIdING SUPPORT TO OUR NEIGHBORS

Our Y cares for ALL in our community. It’s the socially responsible thing to do! One out of every 3 people in our Y needs our financial help to access essential Y programs and services. It takes the support of our entire community to help our neighbors in need.

A donation to the Y matters to the single mom who struggles to give her son a safe place to be after school. And it matters to your neighbor who lost her job in this uncertain economy as she tries to afford a membership that gives her and the kids a place to de-stress and bond.

Your gift matters to the 300 families in our Y who need our help. The Y’s annual campaign, Y FOR ALL, is well underway. We hope you’ll consider supporting your neighbors in need with a gift. You may make a online donation by visiting www.northshoreymca.org/donate.cfm.

Together we can build stronger, more inclusive communities, provide support for families and promote positive change.

A GREATER CAUSEAt the Y, strengthening community is our cause. Our Y has been listening and responding to our communities’ most critical needs for over 150 years. Whether developing skills or emotional well-being, welcoming and connecting diverse populations or advocating for healthier communities, the Y fosters the care and respect all people need and deserve. We truly have a greater cause!

WHY I GIvE..

Mary Spittle, a member of the Cape Ann Y Board of Directors, went the extra mile getting involved in this year’s annual lobby campaign to share information about “Y for All” with our members, and to raise extra financial support for Gloucester and Rockport families in need. Mary came early with coffee and snacks, rallied friends to help, helped create a special “High Five for the Y” giving program, and spent hours in the lobby sharing her passion for the Y’s mission with members. When we asked her why she gives to the Y, this is what she had to say:

“The Y gave me the opportunity to become aware of my capabilities and my inner strength unlike any other experience in my life. Through the expert instructors in the aquatic department I learned to swim as an adult. I overcame my fear of water as well as gained insight into myself. Times were difficult at this point in my life and these life lessons that I learned were just what I needed to assist me in gaining confidence and spirit to guide me through. Who knew so much could be accomplished through simple swimming lessons!” – Mary Spittle

Thanks to Mary, and to all of you who have generously contributed your time and financial support to our mission for youth development, healthy living and social responsibility right here in Cape Ann! If you would like to tell us why you give to the Y, please email Caroline McDonnell at [email protected].

Cape Ann Backpack AttackThe first annual back to school Backpack Attack provides needed school supplies and backpacks for deserving kids in Cape Ann. You can donate a backpack full of school supplies or just drop off the school supplies or backpacks separately and we will assemble complete back pack kits. Suggested school supplies include: backpacks, pencils, notebooks, binders, markers, file folders, colored pencils, calculator, pens, etc. Please visit the Cape Ann Y welcome center for a more complete list of supplies. Backpack and school supplies accepted until September 9th. Donations may be dropped off at the drop box located in the lobby of the Cape Ann Y.

Ben Beyea Youth & Teen Center32 Pooles Lane • Rockport • www.rockportteencenter.orgOpened in the spring of 2007, this collaboration between the Town of Rockport and the YMCA is located at Evans Field. Over the past three-and-a-half years, staff and teens have forged strong, healthy enduring relationships while working together for the future of Rockport youth.

The Youth & Teen Center gives teens a place to belong and a chance to have a good time while making healthy decisions.

Teens play music at band nights, compete in game tournaments, paint murals, learn to bake, ski and snowboard, have dance competitions, plant flowers in the garden, and skateboard behind the Teen Center.

Not only this, but they give back to the community. Teens host trash pick up days in Rockport, hold free skate clinics for Rockport youth, and write encouraging letters to Ugandan orphans and soldiers in Iraq. They are building the foundation for lives of service and community engagement.

Hours: Monday–Thursday 2:30pm-6:00pm Friday & Saturday 2:30pm-10:00pm

The Teen Center is open to all youth from 6th through 12th grade.

WEIGHT LOSS CHALLENGE - TESTIMONIAL

“The Weight Loss Challenge gave me just the right motivation and structure to get me back to the gym and into a workout habit. The personalized fitness training and group sessions are a good balance to introduce you to all that the Y has to offer. My trainer was terrific at giving me the confidence I could do it, and I did! Now I come to the Y several times a week to work out in the weight room and to swim. And I still hear my trainer’s voice pushing me on to take that extra step. I have already recommended this program to everyone I meet. It helped me recommit to being fit and enjoy exercise again.” – Katherine Prum
