Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Mapping > Capability Statement Why GIS? Today, geospatial data is fundamental to the success of projects right across the private and public sectors. It underpins a wide range of activities, from sustainable development and conservation, environmental monitoring and assessment, through to infrastructure planning and implementation, and asset management. Never before has there been such an awareness of the dynamic nature of our world, and the challenges that face us in establishing a sustainable future for the generations to come. GIS can be used to help analyse questions such as: What features of interest surround my site? What is the least costly route to build an oil pipeline? What flooding predictions can be made based on database inputs? What is the average power consumption per person in a chosen area? What is the demographic of the population surrounding my site? What is the topography of my site? These types of questions can be answered through the use of geospatial analysis, and in some cases with applications to streamline highly complex analysis. Atkins’ geospatial analysis services enable clients to achieve consistently measurable results by creating defined GI processes and workflows that shape their future strategy. Atkins specialises in the capture and use of geospatial data and the design and implementation of GIS. Whether it be visually arresting imagery from satellites, or detailed technical data gathered by mobile GIS from the ground, the key to solving many of the problems our clients face lies in unlocking the potential to turn geospatial data into meaningful, useful information to inform the decision- making process. Atkins’ services encompass the entire data lifecycle. We capture data from satellite imagery and aerial photography, digitise information from existing maps and plans, and collect data in the field using mobile devices. We manage the data, conduct data analysis and map or model the data to create 2D and 3D visualisations. We design and develop GI applications and software solutions to help our clients make the most of their spatial data, and we enable our clients to realise the benefits of GIS through the provision of independent advice, support, management, and maintenance services.

Capability Statement

Why GIS?Today, geospatial data is fundamental to the success of projects right across the private and public sectors.

GIS can be used to help analyse questions such as:

• What features of interest surround my site?• What is the least costly route to build an oil pipeline?• What flooding predictions can be made based on

database inputs?• What is the average power consumption per person in a

chosen area?• What is the demographic of the population

surrounding my site?• What is the topography of my site?

These types of questions can be answered through the use of geospatial analysis, and in some cases with applications to streamline highly complex analysis.

Atkins’ geospatial analysis services enable clients to achieve consistently measurable results by creating defined GI processes and workflows that shape their future strategy.

Why Atkins?Atkins specialises in the capture and use of geospatial data and the design and implementation of GIS.

Whether it be visually arresting imagery from satellites, or detailed technical data gathered by mobile GIS from the ground, the key to solving many of the problems our clients face lies in unlocking the potential to turn geospatial data into meaningful, useful information to inform the decision-making process.

About AtkinsAtkins is one of the UK’s largest independent providers of specialist geospatial services. Our international portfolio of projects reflects the broad range of activities undertaken by the Atkins group: an organisation of 17,000 employees and a turnover of more than £1.7 billion. We plan all aspects of our clients’ projects, and conduct feasibility and strategy studies.
