2. Products and Techniques The range and variety of products and services offered by CF Group is made possible by
the versatility of the high quality equipment that comprises the fleet of installation units (piling
rigs). The realisation of this achievement, however, comes courtesy of the commitment,
dedication, skill and expertise of the staff and management of the company.
The policy of owning and using high quality piling rigs has been one of the primary factors
in CF Group pioneering the development and application of the Cutter Soil Mix (CSM) wall
method of retaining wall installation.
The employment of the CSM method of construction in conjunction with the facilities of
anchoring and propping, dewatering and foundation piling have promoted the turnkey
approach resulting in the Complete Basement Solution, whereby all facets of basement
construction are included under a single sub contract.
2.1. Retaining walls
The range of methods of retaining wall
construction available through CF Group
include:
Cutter Soil Mix walls (CSM)
Soldier pile and shotcrete walls
Sheet pile walls
Contiguous pile walls
Secant pile walls
Retaining walls to facilitate basement excavations are a common requirement for new structures in urban environments. CF Group is superbly equipped to install a variety of shoring systems to cater for ground conditions ranging from cohesive semi-self-supporting soils, where soldier piles with shotcrete infill panels provide an economical solution, to water charged non-cohesive sands, where impermeable, continuous walls are required. CF Group’s fleet of state of the art equipment for the installation of basement shoring walls facilitates it being
comprehensively equipped to install the listed wall systems:
Retaining walls are rarely installed to provide support by cantilever action and as a
consequence generally require lateral support; this is either by anchors or props. CF
Group retains in house capacity to install either of these options of lateral support.

2.2. Ground Water Management
In line with the CF Group’s initiative to provide complete basement packages, the company operates an in house dewatering service which can be made available to any of its sites.
This facility is provided wherever the basement excavation levels extend below the natural ground water levels and provides the considerable benefit of eliminating reliance on a third party for the management ground water during excavation activities.
Whether the dewatering requirement is for deep wells, a perimeter well point system or an arrangement of sumps, based on advice contained in geotechnical reports specific to the particular site and an overview of the ground water regime relevant to the site, the CF Group will design and implement a dewatering system to facilitate basement construction in the dry.
Awareness of the layered aquifers and aquicludes that drain into Botany Bay and the artesian conditions of the lower aquifers is typical of the benefit of considering the site overview.

2.3. Pile Foundations
Pile Foundations is a core activity of the CF Group and all of the major installation rigs can be
configured for the installation of a variety of pile types.
Hammer driven piles and vibratory driven piles are rarely installed in urban areas, for
environmental reasons; in consequence the pile types most frequently installed by the CF
Group are Bored Piles, CFA Piles and Augered Displacement piles.
Details of the company’s piling rigs can be found under the part 3 of this document titled
‘equipment’, also on the CF Group’s web site, where the rig manufacturers’ information on the
capability and capacity of the rigs, in terms of recommended pile diameters and achievable
pile depths is provided.
Of particular relevance to piling activities in the Sydney basin is the need to be able to found
piles into the Sydney Sandstone and Ashfield Shales, which predominate as founding strata
throughout area. CF Group’s stable of piling rigs, with high torque and crowd force with cutting
heads designed for penetrating rock, readily address this requirement.

The methods of pile installation available through CF Group include:
Preformed driven piles (pre-cast timber and steel)
Vibratory driven piles
Bored piles or cased bored piles
Continuous Flight Auger (CFA)piles
Rotary auger displacement piles
Double Rotary piles
Micropiles

2.4. Ground Improvement
Ground improvement techniques available through CF Group that effectively reinforce the soil
include:
Controlled modulus columns (CMC)
Stone columns (SC)
Soil mix columns (SMC)
Dynamic Replacement
Compaction grouting
The techniques focus on the reinforcement of soft soils by the installation of rigid or semi rigid
inclusions. Four techniques are in common use: Controlled Modulus Columns (CMC), Stone
Columns, Dynamic Replacement and Soil Mix Columns and the choice of technique is dictated by
the loads to be supported, the structural quality of the soil strata and the depth of treatment required.
They are employed, where large uniform dead or live loads require to be supported and settlements
contained to acceptable limits. Essentially each technique seeks to install columns of material that
are significantly stiffer than the in-situ soil, thereby creating a composite soil with a much enhanced soil modulus. The
inclusions are installed on a grid pattern and the applied loads distributed by a transition layer arching between the column
heads.
Other Ground Improvement methods include:
Wick Drains
Vibro Densification
Dynamic Compaction
As an alternative to reinforcing the soil to improve its global modulus, surcharge loading incorporating vertical ‘Wick’ drains
frequently offers a competitive option. This system facilitates the ground improvement by accelerating consolidation of
cohesive soils. CF Group’s rigs can easily be configured to install drains. Loose non cohesive soils can be treated with
‘high impact’ Dynamic Compaction or ‘low impact’ Vibro densification; both systems can be implemented from CF Group’s
rigs.
2.5. Environmental Remediation
Environmental remediation techniques available through CF Group include low permeability cut-off barriers and deep
collection drains for the management of ground water flow and the transportation of waterborne contaminants. These base
techniques have led to the development of Permeable Reactive Barriers and Funnel and Gate methods of neutralising
contaminants in-situ.
CF Group’s ongoing development of Soil Mixing methodology provides the facility to fix contaminants in the soil in place by
cement stabilisation of the soil or by neutralising the contaminants by the introduction of an appropriate agent mixed into
the contaminated soil.
