Our Mission The Cañon City Geology Club is a non- profit educational club operating since 1928. Our mission is to 1) increase member knowledge of the earth sciences pertaining to minerals, gems, rocks, and fossils; 2) promote and perpetuate knowledge of the lapidary arts; 3) encourage field trips; 4) study the earth sciences, particularly of geology and mineralization in place; 5) encourage greater public interest and education in minerals, gems, and fossils by cooperating with local educational institutions with presentations of local mineral specimens and with examples of lapidary art. Please consider joining and volunteering. Cañon City Geology Club Activities Field trips are planned during the spring, summer and fall, and all members are encouraged to participate. We have sponsored many trips to the various gem, mineral and fossil rich areas in Colorado, and we regularly visit the New Hope claim, an amethyst mine owned by the club a few miles northwest of Cañon City. Classes are scheduled during the winter months on topics such as mineral identification, wire wrapping, cleaning rocks/minerals/fossils and others. Field Trip and Activity Schedules can be found on our website: www.canoncitygeologyclub.com Programs A short educational program given by visit- ing experts on geology, paleontology, mineralogy or other topics is usually held in conjunction with our meetings. We also have show-and-tell events by members. Join us: Our meetings are the second Monday of each month (except July and August) at 6:00 p.m. for our business meeting and at 7:00 p.m. for an interesting and informative program. The venue is the Fellowship Hall of the Methodist Church, 9th and Main St., Cañon City. Our meetings are open to the public and we encourage visitors. CCGC also holds a Silent Auction during ourmonthly business meeting where membersand guests can bid on unique gems andminerals to benefit our scholarship fund.

Local Geology

We in Fremont County are so fortunate tohave world-class geology and paleontologyin our back yard. The geologic history ofFremont County begins with 1.7 billion yearold Precambrian rock. Cañon City and thesurrounding counties contain some of therichest geological history in America, givingus the opportunity to study it in place.

Professor Frederick Carl Kessler, Cañon Cityhigh school teacher, often took his studentson field trips. On one of those field trips, thegroup discovered the stegosaurus fossil thatlater became the Colorado State Fossil.Kessler founded the Cañon City GeologyClub in 1928. It is the oldest geology club inColorado and one of the first four geologyclubs west of the Mississippi.
