CaOling Project - Development of Calcium looping

CaOling Project started on December 2009 as a three-years project to develop and demonstrate post-combustion calcium looping in a pilot-scale unit whichis fully integrated with a power plant.

Status of the pilot plant-Building finished in September 2011-Start of cold commissioning: October 2011- Start of hot commissioning: January 2012- Operational hours with coal combustion (dual fluidized bed mode): ~ 800 h- Operational hours in CO2 capture mode : ~ 160 h-Initial test carried out with the calciner in air mode- First validation under oxy mode in the calciner

• A flexible experimental facility has being constructed in LaPereda Power Plant aiming to validate the technology in the1MW’s size

• Successful proof of concept of postcombustion Ca-looping incontinuous mode of operation with two interconnectedCFBCs at the MWth scale.

• CO2 capture efficiencies over 90% achievable in a CFBcarbonator reactor operating with “standard” solids, bedinventories, gas velocities and solid circulation rates.

• SO2 capture in the CFB carbonator over 95%.
