Canungra Raises $20,000 for CancerWith money still being counted, fund-

raising for Canungra’s Turning Pink in October is approaching $20,000, includ-ing over $10,000 raised by Cafe Metz.

Cafe Metz owner, Dianne Crooks, began turning the cafe pink in October several years ago in the same way Breeze FM did with the station. When they joined together it made sense to involve the whole town.

All money raised will be donated to Cancer Council Queensland to assist

with the work they do in preventing, detecting, effectively treating and surviv-ing a cancer diagnosis.

Once again, the Canungra community ‘digs in’. The annual, ‘Ladies Night In’ was held in Wonglepong on Saturday 15th November. The event is a fundraiser for the the Queensland Cancer Council Pink Ribbon Fundraising. Around forty ladies turned up in various shades of pink, and a great night was had by all. The quiz, bingo and raffle

went down well and contributed to a fabulous $2,000 raised for this worthy cause. Many, many thanks to all the ladies for their very generous donations and for entering into the spirit of the evening. The organisers would also like to say a huge thank you for the very generous donations from Bean In?, Canungra Yoga, O’Reilly’s Vineyard, Steve

& Kim at Canungra Beauty, the Canungra Craft Group and also to Jayne, for her readings on the night. Will keep you posted for the the 2015 dates!

Community Anger Over VandalismCanungra residents have taken to

social media to express their anger over recent damage to community organisa-tions and businesses by vandals.

Police suspect the damage has been carried out by several youths from Canungra and would like to speak to anyone who has information regarding these offences. Much of the damage took place on Friday nights duing Novmber and December:• 21st November - Canungra State

School vegetable garden vandalised; newspapers stolen and destroyed from Canungra Newsagency and Canungra Times.

• 6th December - Canungra Times newspapers from outside the Post Office were scattered across the main street and destroyed;

• 19th December - vandals ‘tagged’ Canungra Bowls Club, FoodWorks and Canungra State School.Canungra Bowls Club Secretary,

Bronwyne Brown said the damage was disgraceful.

“The Canungra community takes immense pride in its hard work in supporting their local clubs,” she said.

“The Bowls Club has been supported and run by volunteers for over 61 years and is a not for profit organisation. The graffiti ‘NSK’ displayed on our Club demonstrates the lack of intelligence and respect these young individuals have for our community.”

“I have great concern for the individu-als who performed these senseless acts, and would like to question where their parents’ responsibilities lie. These vandals should be made accountable for their actions. The Bowls Club needs

to spend time and monies to remove these nonsensical scribbles.”

Acting Sergeant Craig Calvert of Canungra Police Station said children attending the YMCA Holiday Program at Canungra State School had been distressed and frightened by the graffiti.

“Some of the children are worried about people damaging the school when they are there,” he said.

He urged residents to be alert and to contact police immediately if they see anything suspicious.

Chamber of Commerce President, Shane Stevenson said, “At this time of the year when we have an increased presence of tourists in our town it reflects a poor image of Canungra. It is frustrating the business community and community at large when this small group of youths are not being respon-sible and held accountable.

“As it appears the offenders are predominantly youths, parents in the community need to know not only where your children are at night but what they

are doing! The whole community needs to work together and with the local authorities to bring this to an end.”

Division Three Councillor, Virginia West said removing graffiti from Council owned structures is an ongoing problem, the cost of which is borne by ratepayers.

“Apart from the hurt it has caused hard working, volunteer community members, cleaning it off comes at a cost too,” she said.

“The graffiti damage to council property over the past few years has increased markedly as has the clean up cost which we all as ratepayers all have to pay for. This money could be much better spent on more positive commu-nity infrastructure.”

The Canungra Bowls Club will be reliant on volunteers cleaning the damage off when they are able, at a significant cost to the Club.

Canungra’s Annual Carols in the Park was held at

Moriarty Park on Saturday 6th December. It was a great

community event with a break in the weather allowing

organisers to go ahead despite some rain earlier in

the day.

There were some great performances by local

singers as well as Beaudesert Choir A-Choired Taste and of course a visit from Santa who had lollies

for the children.

Christmas Carols in the Park

On Friday 12th December Tamborine Village Lions held its fourth annual Christmas markets and carols. After a tumultuous week of weather we were blessed to have such a wonderful evening.

The Satin Sounds provided the music and A-Choired Taste Scenic Rim Community Choir complemented the experience for all. Santa arrived on the Rural Fire Brigade truck and gave lollies to all the children.

During the evening raffle tickets were sold and our major Christmas raffle was drawn. The winner of the Mitsubishi Electric split air condi-tioning system was David Boniface. Second prize was won by Leigh Bartlett and third prize was won by Jo Cartwright. This raffle helped the Lions raise $2280! As all prizes were donated, all funds raised will go back into our community.

News from St Luke’sBy Di Ayscough, St Luke’s Anglican Church, Canungra

Christmas is over and I hope you all enjoyed celebrating with family and friends. The congregation of St Luke’s held their Christmas lunch in the church on Saturday 19th December and a great time was had by all. Bill and Sonya Gubbins were particularly joyful as their daughter Sasha had just heard about her OP 1.

What a reward for Sasha after her very dedicated years of work at Tamborine Mountain College.

Our Christmas street stall was very successful and we must thank Jo at The Butchery for allowing us to set up outside her shop, and for the beauti-fully presented meat-tray which formed part of our raffle prizes. To every-one who purchased tickets, we thank you and to Irene Sim who is so willing to trek the streets of Canungra selling tickets, we sincerely thank you. All prize winners were local and prizes were delivered on the day.

The next major fundraiser for our heritage listed St Luke’s will be another “Car Boot Sale” to be held in our church grounds. As yet, no date has been set but it will be before Easter, so why not start collecting your goods together in readiness to book a site?

Sunday 20th December saw our annual visit from Bishop Alison. Although a once a year visit, Bishop Alison is always taken by Canungra and what the people offer. Her sermon about caring for each other and helping each other was an important message for everyone.

While thinking of caring people, I must make mention of Keer Moriarty and the Canungra Times. It is always exciting to read the new edition of our local paper. It keeps us all up to date with the happenings of Canungra. Without Keer and her team’s dedication to produce this paper we would all be lacking something which is very worthwhile.

May you all enjoy many blessings in 2015.

Happy New yearI hope you all had a relaxing break over the festive season and I would

like to wish all residents a very prosperous 2015. I look forward to working together in the year ahead.

Reflecting on 2014, the Scenic Rim had some huge ‘wins’ in the form of funding for the Beaudesert Town Bypass, continued restoration of health services at Beaudesert Hospital, State funding for improved sporting projects, an hourly bus service from Beaudesert to Browns Plains and of course an unprecedented roll out of infrastructure investment for bridges and roads.

2015 will see the continuation of the Vibrant and Active Towns and Villages project and the Million Trees project. I endeavour to maintain a focus on the financial sustainability of the region into the future and continue to aid pros-perity for the community through local jobs and support through services.

New Year’s ResolutionsWe’ve all made new

year’s resolutions at some time and we’ve probably all failed to achieve some of them. Many good intentions are around health and fitness, but often by February or March our good intentions have gone out the window and life has got in the way. Try these simple ideas to help you make the changes you desire in 2015. 1. Establish your WHY. Why are you choosing

this goal or behaviour change? How will you feel about yourself if you stick to it? What posi-tive results will come as a result of the new behaviour? How will others feel about it? How will you feel if you don’t stick to it? Getting clear on how life will be better as a result of the changes acts as your inspiration to pull you towards your goals.

2. Get a friend or family member to hold you accountable. We often try harder to please someone else than ourselves.

3. Make it achievable! Based on your track record of sticking to resolutions or health goals, how likely are you to achieve it? Have you set your goal too high? Be realistic knowing your workload, life and personality.

4. Change one small thing at a time, don’t try and reform your entire life in a few days. Several small steps are easier than one big one.

5. Monitor your emotions - be in a state of feeling fit and healthy. Get excited and passionate about what you are wanting to do. How you think and feel about something will determine your results.

6. Don’t beat yourself up if you fail. Instead just evaluate why you didn’t stick to it, and come up with a plan B to try again and get on track.

7. Don’t forget to reward and acknowledge your-self for every step in the right direction! Wishing you a healthy and happy 2015!

There is no place for thisIn our town there are any number of people

who give up their time to create and maintain facilities and services for the community. The list is long and there never seems to be enough volunteers to do everything, but somehow it just gets done.

Maybe that is why people are so angry about the damage that has been done over the last couple of months. Craig Calvert described the recent damage as the worst he has seen it in the 12 years he has been in Canungra.

For the most part, this is being done by a small number of children aged between 10 and 16 who name their pathetic group ‘NSK’ or ‘Nunga Street Kids’. Naughty, Silly Kiddies seems more appropriate.

There is no place for this destructive behav-iour in our community. Not only does it damage the businesses they have defaced and stolen from, it also reflects on the town, on tourism and subsequently on jobs within the town.

These kids won’t care what is written about it. They will probably think they are clever if their naughtiness is reported in the paper. I’m just hoping that their parents might take responsi-bility and stop them from roaming around at all hours of night.

There is only one word for what these kids are doing - gutless. Own up, clean it up or get out.

Show for Orchid and Fine Foliage LoversThe Beaudesert District Orchid and Foliage Society’s ‘Autumn Show For

Orchid And Foliage Plants’ will be held on the weekend of Saturday and Sunday 14th and 15th March 2015 in the Canungra School of Arts Hall in Pine Street, Canungra.

There be many orchids, especially native orchids, in spectacular bloom as well as ferns, begonias, bromeliads, aroids and succulents on display. Quality orchid and foliage plants grown by local society members will be on sale at reasonable prices and trade-tables selling a variety of plant-orientated products and orchid and foliage growing accessories. There will be also a cake and craft stall run by a local organisation.

The show runs from 8.00am to 3.00pm on the Saturday and from 9.00am to 2.00 pm on the Sunday.

A guest speaker will deliver an informative talk on “The Basics for Growing Orchids” at 9.00am and 11.00am on the Saturday and from 10.30am on the Sunday.

Admission is $3.00 per person. Refreshments will be available on the day. There is wheelchair access to the hall and plenty of off-street parking available in the School of Arts carpark adjacent to the hall.

Greetings from Canungra Police Station! Sergeant Roberts is taking a well-earned break from policing this great town and the position of Officer-In-Charge has fallen on my shoulders!

After speaking with Keer, I thought I’d take this opportunity to say ‘gidday’ and to address a number of recent offences that have occurred in our town.

On Friday the 19th December 2014, unknown persons willfully damaged the Canungra State School, Canungra Bowls Club and Canungra FoodWorks. The damage took the form of graffiti. When I say ‘unknown persons’ - we have a pretty good idea who the offend-ers are. I imagine many people in the Canungra township also have a pretty good idea who I am talking about!

For some time now, we have had ‘issues’ with a small group of male juve-niles that hang around town - about four or five individuals in total. In the early days, we tried everything we could do to ‘adjust’ their attitudes. In many instances, these juveniles were formally cautioned, in the hope that they would

stop offending. In more recent times, we have had no alternative but to place a number of these juvenile offenders before court.

In relation to the most recent graf-fiti incident - although we know who the likely candidates are - it’s another thing to prove that they committed the offences. To ensure successful pros-ecution, we must prove the offence ‘beyond a reasonable doubt’. For this reason, we are seeking the assistance of the Canungra community. We would be most grateful if anyone with informa-tion could drop into the station and have a chat with us. Trust me when I say all the police officers at Canungra Station would be only too happy to place these individuals before court.

Should you see or hear these juveniles committing an offence in the Canungra township - please give us a call as soon as possible. If we’re busy with other jobs, police officers from neighbour-ing divisions can be called in to assist. Whilst you’re waiting for the boys (and girls!) in blue to arrive, feel free to utilise

your smart phone to record some video evidence - although saying that, don’t needlessly put your own safety at risk.

Myself and the other officers at Canungra Station are working on addi-tional strategies to deal with these juve-niles. With the help of the community we’ll catch up with them in the end. It’s not a matter of ‘if’ - only ‘when’.

I’ll sign off by speaking directly to the male juveniles I’ve mentioned. If you read this, you should be ashamed of yourselves. A lot of good-hearted people (possibly including your own parents) work hard to keep this town looking great. All you’ve done is insult them and their efforts. If you’ve got any honour at all, you’ll drop into the station and have a chat with us.

On a more positive note, may I take this opportunity to wish the Canungra community all the very best for 2015. The years keep flying past - I still find it difficult to comprehend that I’ve been working at Canungra Station for twelve years now!

Melrose essential oil is a blend of Melaleu-ca, Melaleuca Quinquenervia, Rosemary and Clove. It helps with tissue regeneration from damage or injury, kills infection, bacteria and fungus.

As mentioned above, lavender repels insects and helps to counteract the strong smell of citronella. Lemongrass is refreshing and uplift-ing and is a powerful insecticide. Citronella is most widely used as an insecticide as it kills and keeps away insects. It is also effective on lice and fleas.

Ingredients:• 50 g sweetner of choice (Rapadura, Coconut Sugar, Agave, Honey)• 250 g water• 1 Handful of Mint• 400 g watermelon• 600 g ice cubes

Method:• Combine the water

and sweetner, and heat in a saucepan until dissolved. Let stand till cool.

• Put sugar, mint and watermelon, into a blender and blend until smooth.

• Add ice cubes to the blender.

• Mix at high speed until it reaches a frozen slush like consistency.

• Pour into glasses to enjoy!

2014/15 Community Grants ProgramScenic Rim Regional Council will provide over $43,000 in assistance to

local community groups through the second round of the 2014/15 Commu-nity Grants Program.

Moriarty Park Community Sporting Centre received funding for the Christmas Carols in the Park event on 6th December and Canungra Area Golf Club received funding for an awning for their new Clubhouse, which has been erected at a working bee by volunteers. Several organisations on Tamborine Mountain also received funding.

In total, 37 community groups throughout the region will share in finan-cial support totalling $43,080, with an additional 26 groups receiving in-kind support totalling $15,500.

Corporate and Community Services Committee chair Cr Nigel Waist-ell said Council’s Community Grants provided important assistance for local organisations to undertake a range of projects integral to community building.

“The grants are significant in assisting community groups with access to materials, repairing infrastructure or upgrading technologies, and support-ing community events,” Cr Waistell said.

Applications for the remaining rounds of the 2014/15 Community Grants Program close on 6th February and 8th May.

Nature’s GemswilDlife travel Diary 2014

2014 has been the year I packed my bags, took time off from work and jour-neyed to some of the most renowned wildlife viewing destinations in the world. My first stop was Kenya. This beautiful country has been known as a premier wildlife destination for decades. My travel companions and I were very keen to visit the legendary Masai Mara Game Reserve to see the annual wilde-beest migration. However, we were also keen to see other protected areas such as Amboseli National Park, Tsavo East/West National Park, Ol Pejeta Conser-vancy and Lake Nakuru National Park, which also showcase some of Kenya’s finest wildlife concentrations.

Our first stop was the Tsavo East/West National Park. These particular national

parks have dramatic landscapes which range from natural springs, rocky peaks, rolling plains and volcanic formations. An outstanding array of wildlife such as elephants, zebras, giraffes, many species of birdlife, buffalo, antelope and leopard call Tsavo East/West National Park their home. Tsavo is possibly best known for its maneless ‘man-eating’ lions. During the construction of the Kenyan-Uganda railway in 1898, works came to a halt when two male lions dragged workers from their tents and ate them. These lions proved hard to catch and works only commenced on the railway once the animals were removed.

Our next stop was to be Amboseli National Park. This incredible park has the added bonus of dramatic backdrop

of Mt Kilimanjaro. A visit to the plains of Amboseli reveal scenes that can be readily seen in David Attenborough‘s nature docu-mentaries: African elephants feeding in a sea of green with Mt Kilimanjaro as the backdrop! This beautiful park is also home to numerous wildebeest, zebras, birds, hippos, baboons, giraffe and Thomson’s gazelle.

Ol Pejeta Conservancy was the next stop. This conservancy is a privately owned wildlife reserve, which is home to some of Kenya’s most endangered species such as black rhinos, Grevy’s Zebra and African Wild Dogs. It is also a sanctuary for Southern White Rhinos, Northern White Rhinos and chimpan-zees. One of the main reasons for me to visit this reserve was to see a criti-cally endangered Northern White Rhino called Sudan that I have ‘adopted’ for several years. My experience with this particular animal was to be life-changing and to re-affirm why I work as a Park Ranger.

Enroute to the Masai Mara Game Reserve, we had a short stay at the Lake Nakuru National Park. This Park has the stunning Lake Nakuru as its centrepiece and is home to Flamingos, Southern White Rhinos, Rock Hyrax, Leopard, Buffalo and Baboons. Last but not least, we reached the Masai Mara. We were not disappointed. We had numerous sightings of lions, hyenas, different species of vultures, thousands of wildebeest, hippo and zebra. Our knowledgeable guides were also able to find provide sightings of cheetah and the elusive endangered black rhino. No Masai Mara experience is complete without a hot-air balloon ride over the endless savannah at dawn. My time in Kenya was truly magical and I would thoroughly recommend this experience to all animal lovers.

We held our AGM on 15th December and were absolutely delighted to have 11 attendees - unheard of previously!

Even better is that every person who came along offered to take on at least one position/task for the next season and lots of other offers assistance were received. Many hands make light work! There were lots of good ideas thrown around and we are all looking forward to an even bigger and better season next year. We have already been successful with a grant application from the Queensland Government’s ‘Get Going’ program for a full set of mobile goal posts and our wonderful local Op Shop has taken care of ALL of our ball requirements for next year, which is a tremendous head start and we thank them very much.

We have more grant applications in the pipe-line to improve the facility at Moriarty Park and are working closely with the Moriarty Park Committee to achieve this.

Soccer Sign On will be available on line in January. You are encouraged to source vouch-ers to assist with these fees from the Govern-ment’s ‘Get Started’ program. The Soccer Club will hold two registration sign on days: Satur-day 31st January and Sunday 8th February at Moriarty Park from 8.30 - 11.00am. All players aged 12 and over will need a photo to be taken and uploaded directly to the website in the sign on process. This photo must be clearly able to identify the player with clear view of the face.

Socks and shorts will be available at sign on days for $15 and $25 respectively. Training shirts (personalised) can be ordered at this time at cost of $15 - Foodworks have kindly spon-sored the remaining amount!

Registration fees will remain lower than other clubs but will have to be increased a little as the Club lost a considerable amount of money last year. Our registration fees are nearly all paid directly to Football Queensland for insurances etc; we depend almost entirely on canteen takings to pay for referees (a standard morning of games on a Saturday morning the referee cost is around $150), line marking paint etc.

Foodworks help us out in many ways and Canungra Hotel allows us to hold meat tray raffles every second Sunday which is a tremen-dous help also. We do need more people to help out with the raffles, however and we will expect next season that each team take on responsibil-ity to do one raffle day for the season. It takes about an hour and a half and could double as a team and family get together and lunch.
