UNIT 32 Brahms prayers for the relief of the earths burden, and the appearance of the Supreme Personality of Godhead. (CANTO 10 CHAPTERS 1-4)

Chapter 1-4: AChapter 1: The Advent of Lord Ka : Introduction

Knas Abode (Text 1-3)Medicine for disease of birth-death (Text 4)Taking shelter of the lotus feet of Lord Ka (Text 5-7)Lord is never formless (Text 8-14)Story of Ka essential for political leaders (Text 15-16)Ka is not an ordinary historical person (Text 17-21)How do the energies of the Lord work (Text 22-26)Ancient Vedic Marriage Rituals (Text 27-33)Living Entity always changes bodies (Text 34-40)Next Body is obtained according to condition of the mind (Text 41-42)Why does the living entity identifies with the body? (Text 43-46)Goal of Vedic culture is to be saved from death (Text 47-48)Vasudeva promises to give new born sons to Ka sa (Text 49-55)Calling of devotees to take part in Lords pastimes (Text 56-63)Kasa kills Vasudevas sons (Text 64-69)Prva-svdhyya (Preliminary Self Study)Analogies: The potencies of the Supreme Personality of Godhead are called by different names, such asyoga-myandmah-my.Ultimately, however, the Lords potency is one, exactly as electric potency is one although it can act both to cool and to heat. 10.1.25 An iron rod kept constantly within a fire will ultimately become fire, and whatever it touches will burn. Similarly, the pure devotee is in the fire of spiritual existence, and therefore his body iscin-maya;that is, it is spiritual, not material, because the pure devotee has no desire but the transcendental desire to serve the Lord. if one were in a boat moving according to the wind on a river or the sea, and the wind were uncontrollable, the tilting boat would be very much disturbed and extremely difficult to control. It might even capsize. Therefore, in thebhava-samudra,the ocean of mental speculation and transmigration to different types of bodies, one must first control the mind. The moon is stationary and is one, but when it is reflected in water or oil, it appears to take different shapes because of the movements of the wind. Similarly, the soul is the eternal servant of Ka, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, but when put into the material modes of nature, it takes different bodies. By the influence ofmy, the living entity thinks that he is this person, that person, American, Indian, cat, dog, tree or whatever. SB 10.1.40Just as a person traveling on the road rests one foot on the ground and then lifts the other, or as a worm on a vegetable transfers itself to one leaf and then gives up the previous one, the conditioned soul takes shelter of another body and then gives up the one he had before. SB 10.1.41Having experienced a situation by seeing or hearing about it, one contemplates and speculates about that situation, and thus one surrenders to it, not considering his present body. Similarly, by mental adjustments one dreams at night of living under different circumstances, in different bodies, and forgets his actual position. SB 10.1.51When a fire, for some unseen reason, leaps over one piece of wood and sets fire to the next, the reason is destiny. Similarly, when a living being accepts one kind of body and leaves aside another, there is no other reason than unseen destiny.

10.1 ADHYYA-KATH-SRA (CHAPTER OVERVIEW)The summary of the First Chapter is as follows. This chapter describes how Kasa, frightened by hearing an omen about his being killed by the eighth son of Devak, killed Devaks sons one after another. When ukadeva Gosvm finished describing the dynasty of Yadu, as well as the dynasties of the moon-god and sun-god, Mahrja Parkit requested him to describe Lord Ka, who appeared with Baladeva in the Yadu dynasty, and how Ka performed His activities within this world. Ka is transcendental, the King said, and therefore to understand His activities is the occupation of liberated persons. Hearing ofka-llis the boat by which to achieve the ultimate goal of life. Except for an animal killer or one who is following a policy of suicide, every intelligent person must strive to understand Ka and His activities.Ka was the only worshipable Deity for the Pavas. When Mahrja Parkit was in the womb of his mother, Uttar, Ka saved him from the attack of thebrahma-astra.Now Mahrja Parkit asked ukadeva Gosvm how His Lordship Baladeva, the son of Rohi, could have appeared in the womb of Devak. Why did Ka transfer Himself from Mathur to Vndvana, King Parkit asked, and how did He live there with His family members? What did Ka do in Mathur and Vndvana, and why did He kill His maternal uncle Kasa? For how many years did Ka reside in Dvrak, and how many queens did He have? Mahrja Parkit asked ukadeva Gosvm all these questions. He also requested ukadeva Gosvm to describe other activities of Ka about which he could not inquire. When ukadeva Gosvm began to speak about Ka consciousness, Mahrja Parkit forgot the fatigue brought about by his fasting. Enthusiastic to describe Ka, ukadeva Gosvm said, Like the waters of the Ganges, descriptions of the activities of Ka can purify the entire universe. The speaker, the inquirer and the audience all become purified.Once when the entire world was overburdened by the increasing military power of demons in the form of kings, mother earth assumed the shape of a cow and approached Lord Brahm for relief. Sympathetic to mother earths lamentation, Brahm, accompanied by Lord iva and other demigods, took the cow-shaped mother earth to the shore of the Milk Ocean, where he offered prayers to please Lord Viu, who lay there on an island in transcendental ecstasy. Brahm thereafter understood the advice of Mah-Viu, who informed him that He would appear on the surface of the earth to mitigate the burden created by the demons. The demigods, along with their wives, should appear there as associates of Lord Ka in the family of Yadu to increase the sons and grandsons in that dynasty. By the will of Lord Ka, Anantadeva would appear first, as Balarma, and Kas potency, Yoga-my, would also appear. Brahm informed mother earth about all this, and then he returned to his own abode. After marrying Devak, Vasudeva was returning home with her on a chariot driven by Kasa, her brother, when an ominous voice addressed Kasa, warning him that Devaks eighth son would kill him. Upon hearing this omen, Kasa was immediately ready to kill Devak, but Vasudeva diplomatically began to instruct him. Vasudeva stressed that it would not be good for Kasa to kill his younger sister, especially at the time of her marriage. Anyone who possesses a material body must die, Vasudeva advised him. Every living entity lives in a body for some time and then transmigrates to another body, but one is unfortunately misled into accepting the body as the soul. If a person under this mistaken conception wants to kill another body, he is condemned as hellish.Because Kasa was not satisfied by Vasudevas instructions, Vasudeva devised a plan. He offered to bring Kasa all of Devaks children so that Kasa could kill them. Why then should Kasa kill Devak now? Kasa was satisfied by this proposal. In due course of time, when Devak gave birth to a child, Vasudeva brought the newborn baby to Kasa, who, upon seeing Vasudevas magnanimity, was struck with wonder. When Vasudeva gave Kasa the child, Kasa, showing some intelligence, said that since he was to be killed by the eighth child, why should he kill the first? Although Vasudeva did not trust him, Kasa requested Vasudeva to take the child back. Later, however, after Nrada approached Kasa and disclosed to him that the demigods were appearing in the Yadu and Vi dynasties and conspiring to kill him, Kasa decided to kill all the children born in these families, and he also decided that any child born from the womb of Devak must be killed. Thus he arrested and imprisoned both Devak and Vasudeva and killed six of their sons, one after another. Nrada had also informed Kasa that in his previous birth Kasa was Klanemi, a demon killed by Viu. Consequently, Kasa became a great enemy to all the descendants of theyadu-vaa,the Yadu dynasty. He even arrested and imprisoned his own father, Ugrasena, for Kasa wanted to enjoy the kingdom alone.Discussion Topics:Very Important teachings (Main Point): Recitation ofBhagavad-gtandrmad-Bhgavatammust be done by persons completely freed from material desires (nivtta-tarai) (Why?) When one is engaged in sense gratification, he cannot fully understand the value of Ka-kath. (Therefore), hearingrmad-Bhgavatamspoken by a professional reciter cannot actually help us achieve liberation. (On the other hand), if we hear the glories of the Supreme Personality of Godhead from liberated persons, this hearing will certainly free us from the bondage of material activities. (In essence) Ka-kathis very simple. Simply by understanding this fact that Ka is the Supreme Personality of Godhead one can become a liberated person. Other Point 8: (Encouragement for non-devotees: even if you hear someone else perfectly speaking and perfectly hearing it helps) When discourses onka-kathtake place between a liberated spiritual master and his disciple, others also sometimes take advantage of hearing these topics and also benefit. Point 8 continued: (More encouragement for non-devotees: even if you hear unwillingly it helps) The cycle of repeated birth and death, by which one takes on different bodies again and again, is calledbhavaorbhava-roga.If anyone, willingly or unwillingly, hearska-kath,hisbhava-roga,the disease of birth and death, will certainly stop. Thereforeka-kathis calledbhavauadha, the remedy to stop the repetition of birth and death. Point 8 continued: (Even more encouragement for non-devotees: even if you have material desires Ka kath will help) Karms,or persons attached to material sense enjoyment, generally cannot give up their material desires, butka-kathis such a potent medicine that if one is induced to hearka-krtana,he will certainly be freed from this disease. A practical example is Dhruva Mahrja Point 9: Relation to ISKCON: (Dhruva Mahrja was successful, what is the hope for us, we are so fallen kali yuga jivas?) We actually see that even young boys and girls in the Ka consciousness movement have given up their long practice of bad habits like illicit sex, meat-eating, intoxication and gambling. Because Ka consciousness is so potent that it gives them full satisfaction, they are no longer interested in material sense gratification. Especially excluded from spiritual life are the animal hunters, who are not interested in hearing and chanting the holy name of the Lord. Such hunters are always unhappy, both in this life and in the next. Animal hunters are completely different from ordinary karms, and thus they have been excluded from the process of hearing and chanting. They cannot enter into the transcendental pleasure of chanting and hearing the holy name of the Lord. Main Point: Parkit Mahrja because of his many obligations to Ka, intelligently decided to think of Ka constantly during the last days of his life. Ka had saved the Pavas, Mahrja Parkits grandfathers, on the Battlefield of Kuruketra, and Ka had saved Mahrja Parkit himself when he was attacked by the brahmstraof Avatthm. Ka acted as the friend and worshipable Deity of the Pava family. Other Point 2: (Same point as in previous purport) Ka consciousness is beneficial to everyone, whether one is a pure devotee or a nondevotee. This is the glory of Ka consciousness. Considering this, who will not take shelter at the lotus feet of Ka? Other Point 1: The entire world is suffering because of spiritual thirst. Every living being is Brahman, or spirit soul, and needs spiritual food to satisfy his hunger and thirst. Unfortunately, however, the world is completely unaware of the nectar ofka-kath.The Ka consciousness movement is therefore a boon to philosophers, religionists and people in general. There is certainly a charming attraction in Ka andka-kath.Therefore the Absolute Truth is called Ka, the most attractive. Other Point 3: But unless one hearska-kathfrom a realized soul like ukadeva Gosvm, one cannot relish the nectar ofka-kath,which puts an end to all material fatigue, and enjoy the blissful life of transcendental existence. Other Point 4: Relation to ISKCON: In relation to the Ka consciousness movement, we actually see that those who have tasted the nectar ofka-kathlose all material desires, whereas those who cannot understand Ka orka-kathregard the Ka conscious life as brainwashing and mind control. While the devotees enjoy spiritual bliss, the nondevotees are surprised that the devotees have forgotten material hankerings. Relation to ISKCON: Mahrja Parkit wasrjari-sattama,the best of all saintly kings, and ukadeva Gosvm wasmuni-sattama,the best ofmunis. Both of them were elevated because of their common interest inka-kath. Ka-kathis so enlivening that Mahrja Parkit forgot everything material, even his personal comfort in relation to food and drink. This is an example of how the Ka consciousness movement should spread all over the world to bring both the speaker and the audience to the transcendental platform and back home, back to Godhead. Relation to ISKCON: rmad-Bhgavatamis a record of Vsudevas activities, andBhagavad-gtis the record of Vsudeva speaking personally. Therefore, since the Ka consciousness movement is full ofvsudeva-kath,anyone who hears, anyone who joins the movement and anyone who preaches will be purified. (What is dharmasya glni?) When the residents of this earth become atheistic and godless, they descend to the status of animals like dogs and hogs, and thus their only business is to bark among themselves. This isdharmasya glni, deviation from the goal of life. Excessive military preparations like atomic weapons are certainly unnecessary; they reflect the false pride of the heads of state. The real business of a chief executive is to see to the happiness of the mass of people by training them in Ka consciousness in different divisions of life: varrama. Main Point and Relation to ISKCON: Even long, long ago, asuras, persons devoid of God consciousness, became the heads of state, and now this is happening again. The various states of the world are preoccupied with arranging for military strength. Why should peoples hard-earned money be spent in this way? Because of the present world situation, Ka has descended in the form of the Ka consciousness movement. This is quite natural, for without the Ka consciousness movement the world cannot be peaceful and happy. SD: daitynka: Burden of sins of countless soldiers of the daitys, demons, who though not born of Ditis lineage, attained their demoniac status by their actions. Murefers tomukti,or salvation, andkurefers to that which is bad or very obnoxious. Thusmukurefers to the Supreme Personality of Godhead, who saves one from the bad condition of material existence. The Lord is calledmukundabecause He not only saves the devotee from material existence but offers him transcendental bliss in love and service. As for Keava, kameans Brahm, andameans Lord iva. The Personality of Godhead captivates both Lord Brahm and Lord Mahdeva, or iva, by His transcendental qualities. Therefore He is called Keava. SD: sura-striyah: wives of demigods; refers to expansions of Kas eternal female companions, who were present in the heavenly planets. They performed worship to attain friendship and intimacy with Kras most dear lovers (Vraja-gops). Because of their worship they took birth in the Yadu dynasty as different priya sakhs of Ka in Bhauma Vndvana to enrich the Lords transcendental pastimes. When Kna appears in the family of the demigods in partial form, His beloved also appear in the forms of demigoddesses to please Him. When Ka appeared on earth, these devs appeared as young unmarried gops, priya sakhs of the nitya-priya sakhs. r Baladeva is the Supreme Personality of Godhead Himself. He is equal in supremacy to the Supreme Godhead, yet wherever Ka appears, r Baladeva appears as His brother, sometimes elder and sometimes younger. Although Baladeva is identical with Sakaraa, He is the origin of Sakaraa. Therefore the wordsvarhas been used to indicate that Baladeva always exists in His own independence. The wordsvaralso indicates that Baladeva is beyond the material conception of existence. My cannot attract Him, but because He is fully independent, He can appear by His spiritual potency wherever He likes. Main Point: Mathur City is the transcendental abode of Lord Ka; it is not an ordinary material city. Vndvana is within the jurisdiction of Mathur. Because Mathur and Vndvana are intimately connected with Ka eternally, it is said that Lord Ka never leaves Vndvana (vndvana parityajya padam eka na gacchati). (Very Important point mentioned in supplementary notes) When a self-realized soul acts in his transcendental position, his situation is called Mathur. In other words, when one acts in the process ofbhakti-yoga,he may live anywhere, but actually he lives in Mathur, Vndvana. Devotion to Ka, the son of Nanda Mahrja, is the essence of all knowledge, and wherever such knowledge is manifested is called Mathur. Also, when one establishesbhakti-yoga,excluding all other methods, ones situation is called Mathur. Vrajabhmi refers to Mathur-Vndvana, and Gaua-maala-bhmi includes Navadvpa. These two places are nondifferent. Therefore, anyone living in Navadvpa-dhma, knowing Ka and r Caitanya Mahprabhu to be the same personality, lives in Vrajabhmi, Mathur-Vndvana. Other Point 2: (Why Lord has made these holy places appear on earth planet?) The Lord has made it convenient for the conditioned soul to live in Mathur, Vndvana and Navadvpa and thus be directly connected with the Supreme Personality of Godhead. Simply by living in these places, one can immediately come in contact with the Lord. Other Point 3: There are many devotees who vow never to leave Vndvana and Mathur. This is undoubtedly a good vow, but if one leaves Vndvana, Mathur or Navadvpa-dhma for the service of the Lord, he is not disconnected from the Supreme Personality of Godhead. When the Supreme Lord descends to the surface of the world, His original abode is not vacant, for He can remain in His original abode and simultaneously descend upon Mathur, Vndvana, Ayodhy and other places. He does not need to descend, since He is already present there; He simply manifests Himself. Vasudeva was a great personality because he knew how to pacify a cruel person and how to forgive even the bitterest enemy. One who is fortunate is never caught, even by tigers or snakes. Relation to ISKCON: At the present moment there is great opposition to the Hare Ka movement, which is being called a brainwashing movement. But actually the so-called scientists, philosophers and other leaders in the Western countries have no brains at all. The Hare Ka movement is trying to elevate such foolish persons by enlightening their intelligence so that they will take advantage of the human body. Unfortunately, because of gross ignorance, they regard the Hare Ka movement as a brainwashing movement. They do not know that without God consciousness one is forced to continue transmigrating from one body to another. Because of their devilish brains, they will next be forced to accept an abominable life and practically never be able to liberate themselves from the conditional life of material existence. The Ka consciousness movement offers the topmost welfare activity for human society. The saner section of human society must therefore take this movement very seriously for the benefit of all humanity. Vairgya-vidy-nija-bhakti-yoga.By following the principles of this movement, one becomes disassociated from material mental concoctions and is established on the original platform of the eternal relationship between the living entity and the Supreme Personality of Godhead as servant and master. This, in summary, is the purpose of the Ka consciousness movement. The work of unseen destiny cannot be ascertained by practical experimental knowledge, and therefore one must be satisfied by reasoning that everything is done by supreme providence. Although all the events were prearranged by Ka, a devotee must try his best to serve the purpose of Ka. Ka Himself is all-powerful, but it is not that a devotee should therefore sit idly and leave everything to Him. The character of a pure devotee like Vasudeva is such that even so great a demon as Kasa firmly believed in his words and was satisfied. Vasudeva and Devak were very pleased when they understood that the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Ka, would come as their eighth son. Vasudeva, a pure devotee of the Lord, was eager to see Ka appear as his child from the eighth pregnancy of Devak. Therefore, he begot one child every year so that Kas turn to appear would come as soon as possible.Very important versesSB 10.1.4Glorification of the Supreme Personality of Godhead is performed in the parampar system, that is, it is conveyed from the spiritual master to disciple. Such glorification is relished by those no longer interested in the false, temporary glorification of this cosmic manifestation. Descriptions of the Lord are the right medicine for the conditioned soul undergoing repeated birth and death. Therefore, who will cease hearing such glorification of the Lord except a butcher or one who is killing his own self?SB 10.1.13Because of my vow on the verge of death, I have given up even drinking water, yet because I am drinking the nectar of topics about Ka, which is flowing from the lotus mouth of your Lordship, my hunger and thirst, which are extremely difficult to bear, cannot hinder me.SB 10.1.16The Ganges, emanating from the toe of Lord Viu, purifies the three worlds, the upper, middle and lower planetary systems. Similarly, when one asks questions about the pastimes and characteristics of Lord Vsudeva, Ka, three varieties of men are purified: the speaker or preacher, he who inquires, and the people in general who listen.SB 10.1.58What is painful for saintly persons who strictly adhere to the truth? How could there not be independence for pure devotees who know the Supreme Lord as the substance? What deeds are forbidden for persons of the lowest character? And what cannot be given up for the sake of Lord Ka by those who have fully surrendered at His lotus feet?Very short summaryThe summary of the First Chapter is as follows. This chapter describes how Kasa, frightened by hearing an omen about his being killed by the eighth son of Devak, killed Devaks sons one after another.Kas Abode (Text 1-3)SB 10.1.1King Parkit said: My dear lord, you have elaborately described the dynasties of both the moon-god and the sun-god, with the exalted and wonderful character of their kings.Main point: Link between canto 9 and 10: At the end of the Ninth Canto, ukadeva Gosvm summarized the activities of Ka. Parkit Mahrja, being naturally a devotee of Ka, wanted to hear more about Lord Ka. Therefore, to encourage ukadeva Gosvm to continue speaking about Ka and give further details, he thanked ukadeva Gosvm for having described the activities of Ka in brief.Other Points Soma-vaa more respected: Although the planetary systems are so arranged that the sun comes first, before the moon, Parkit Mahrja gave more respect to the dynasty of the moon-god, thesoma-vaa,because in the Ydava dynasty, descending from the moon, Ka had appeared. (SD: Thus he mentioned the word soma first). All the kings in both thesoma-vaaandsrya-vaawere great and powerful, and Mahrja Parkit praised them very highly. Nonetheless, he wanted to hear more about the soma-vaabecause that was the dynasty in which Ka had appeared. VCT gives 3 more reasons: soma is the grandson of Brahm; an aa of Brahm; the deity of the mind. But Ka is the most important reason. SD: Though the wonderful activities of Svyambhuva and hid dynasty were related in 4th canto, they did not culminate in sweetness. However, sweetness was finally attained with the description of Ka, who appeared in the moon dynasty and Lord Rma of the sun dynasty. Thus the discussions of these dynasties became very prominent in rmad-Bhgavatam. Lord appears in Katriya families: When the Supreme Personality of Godhead appears, He generally appears in akatriyafamily because He comes to establish religious principles and the life of righteousness. Vndvana, Kas supreme abode: The supreme abode of Ka is described inBrahma-sahitas the abode ofcintmai. The Vndvana-dhma on this earth is a replica of that same abode. The manifested world can be seen in the form of many stars and planets such as the sun and moon, but beyond this is the unmanifested, which is imperceptible to those who are embodied. And beyond this unmanifested matter is the spiritual kingdom, which is described inBhagavad-gtas supreme and eternal. That kingdom is never annihilated. In the Tenth Canto of rmad-Bhgavatam,the spiritual world is described as Vndvana, Goloka Vndvana or Vraja-dhma. The elaborate description of the lokafrom the Ninth Canto jto gata pit-ghd(Bhg.9.24.66) will be found here, in the Tenth Canto.SB 10.1.2O best of munis, you have also described the descendants of Yadu, who were very pious and strictly adherent to religious principles. Now, if you will, kindly describe the wonderful, glorious activities of Lord Viu, or Ka, who appeared in that Yadu dynasty with Baladeva, His plenary expansion. Link from verse 1: In verse 1 the Parkit thanks for brief description of Lord Kras pastimes. In verse 2 and 3 he requests for elaborate description. Other point: Even Lord Mah-Viu, who by His breathing creates many millions upon millions of universes, is Lord Kaskal-viea,or plenary portion of a plenary portion. Mah-Viu is a plenary expansion of Sakaraa, who is a plenary expansion of Nryaa. Nryaa is a plenary expansion of thecatur-vyha,and the catur-vyhaare plenary expansions of Baladeva, the first manifestation of Ka. Therefore when Ka appeared with Baladeva, all theviu-tattvasappeared with Him. Main point and also important word: SD: vryi asa Meanings (1) Please explain heroic exploits (vryni) of He who has appeared (avatrasya) as that person whose aa is Viu in Vaikuha. (2) Please describe the exploits partially (aena), since it is impossible to completely describe Kas pastimes. SP also mentions both the points. Yado: SD: You have also previously described the pious nature of Yadu. Though Yadu disobeyed his fathers order, because of his pure devotion, his exalted character is praised in the Ninth and Eleventh Cantos of SB. Lord Viu is a partial representation of Ka:This chapter describes that Ka appearedaena, with His parts and parcels or His partial manifestation. rdhara Svm says that Ka is one hundred percent Bhagavn (kas tu bhagavn svayam). Because of our imperfections, however, we cannot appreciate Ka in fullness, and therefore whatever Ka exhibited when present on earth was but a partial manifestation of His opulence. Again, Ka appeared with His plenary expansion Baladeva. Ka, however, is full; there is no question of His appearing partially. rla Santana Gosvm says that to accept that Ka was partially manifested would contradict the statementkas tu bhagavn svayam. rla Jva Gosvm says that the wordaenameans that Ka appeared with all His plenary expansions. The wordsaena viodo not mean that Ka is a partial representative of Viu. Rather, Ka appeared in fullness, and He manifests Himself partially in the Vaikuhalokas. In theCaitanya-caritmta, di-ll,Chapter Four, this subject matter is explained very clearly. rla Vivantha Cakravart hkura also notes that no one can describe Ka in fullness. Whatever descriptions we find inrmad-Bhgavatamare partial explanations of Ka. In conclusion, therefore, the wordaenaindicates that Lord Viu is a partial representation of Ka, not that Ka is a partial representation of Viu. rla Santana Gosvms-The exact meaning ofdharma-lais an unadulterated devotee. Anyone who accepts the principle of surrender to the lotus feet of the Lord, giving up all other systems of religion, is actuallydharma-la,perfectly religious. One such religious person was Mahrja Parkit.SB 10.1.3The Supersoul, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, r Ka, the cause of the cosmic manifestation, appeared in the dynasty of Yadu. Please tell me elaborately about His glorious activities and character, from the beginning to the end of His life. Important Word ktavn yni: all the different activities Ka performed while present on earth are beneficial to human society. Main Point: What is the benefit of Ka-kath? If religionists, philosophers and people in general simply hear the activities of Ka, they will be liberated. What Constitutes Ka-kath?: Two kinds ofka-kath,represented byBhagavad-gt,spoken personally by Ka about Himself, andrmad-Bhgavatam,spoken by ukadeva Gosvm about the glories of Ka. SD: Vivtm: Ka is called vivtm because He is the true object of love rather than the body of other jvas. SD: Vada vistart: Please explain extensively since my intelligence is slow to grasp the subject. SD: bhagavn bhta bhvanah: Sr Ka descends to immerse the jvas (bhta) in prema (bhvana) and to fill all living entities with bhva.Medicine for disease of birth-death (Text 4)Why Parkit Mahrja wanted to hear about Lord Ka?1st reason I am a tiny jva bound up by the disease of material life. How can I stop drinking the great medicine of Kas pastimes recited by you, who are the best of doctors endowed with the greatest fortune?According to Bhaktivinoda Thakura Verse 4 mentions Analysis of Unfavorable Conditions for Bhakti (bhakti pratikulya vicarah)SB 10.1.4Glorification of the Supreme Personality of Godhead is performed in the parampar system, that is, it is conveyed from the spiritual master to disciple. Such glorification is relished by those no longer interested in the false, temporary glorification of this cosmic manifestation. Descriptions of the Lord are the right medicine for the conditioned soul undergoing repeated birth and death. Therefore, who will cease hearing such glorification of the Lord except a butcher or one who is killing his own self? SD: King Parkit said, I am a tiny jva bound up by the disease of material life. How can I stop drinking the great medicine of Kas pastimes recited by you, who are the best of doctors endowed with the greatest fortune? With this intention Parkit Mahrja speaks this verse. (Main Point): Recitation ofBhagavad-gtandrmad-Bhgavatammust be done by persons completely freed from material desires (nivtta-tarai) (Why?) When one is engaged in sense gratification, he cannot fully understand the value of Ka-kath. (But complex jivas have made it complex) Especially in this age, because people are interested in hearingBhagavad-gtfrom unscrupulous persons who depart from the simple presentation of Bhagavad-gtand distort it for their personal satisfaction, they fail to derive the real benefit. (As explained above, since unauthorized persons dont fully understand the value of Ka Kath, they misinterpret) So-called scholars, philosophers and politicians exploit the importance ofBhagavad-gtby distorting its meaning for their own purposes. (So, who is qualified to speak?) Therefore this verse warns thatka-kathshould be recited by a person who isnivtta-ta - that is, one who has no material purpose, whose only purpose is to preach Ka consciousness. Padma Pura:avaiava-mukhodgrapta hari-kathmtamravaa naiva kartavyasarpocchia yath paya (Example of proper reciter and proper hearer) ukadeva Gosvm epitomizes the proper reciter forrmad-Bhgavatam,and Parkit Mahrja, who purposefully left his kingdom and family prior to meeting death, epitomizes the person fit to hear it. (Why hearing from qualified speaker is potent?) A qualified reciter ofrmad-Bhgavatam gives the right medicine (bhavauadhi) for the conditioned souls. (Practical application for ISKCON) The Ka consciousness movement is therefore trying to train qualified preachers to recitermad-BhgavatamandBhagavad-gtthroughout the entire world, so that people in general in all parts of the world may take advantage of this movement and thus be relieved of the threefold miseries of material existence. Other Point 1: (Encouragement for preachers) The instructions ofBhagavad-gtand the descriptions ofrmad-Bhgavatamare so pleasing that almost anyone suffering from the threefold miseries of material existence will desire to hear the glories of the Lord from these books and thus benefit on the path of liberation. Other Point 2: (Warning for preachers) Two classes of men, however, will never be interested in hearing the message ofBhagavad-gtandrmad-Bhgavatam those who are determined to commit suicide and those determined to kill cows and other animals for the satisfaction of their own tongues. Other Point 3: pau-ghnt: Pau-ghnameans butcher. Persons fond of performing ritualistic ceremonies for elevation to the higher planetary systems must offer sacrifices (yajas) by killing animals. Lord Buddhadeva therefore rejected the authority of theVedasbecause his mission was to stop animal sacrifices, which are recommended in Vedic ritualistic ceremonies. Other Point 4: Anyone who is not Ka conscious and who therefore does not engage in the service of the Lord is alsopau-ghna, for he is willingly drinking poison. Other Point 5: Those interested intrivarga that is, indharma, arthaandkma are religious for the sake of achieving a material position with which to gain better facilities for sense gratification. Such persons are killing themselves by willingly keeping themselves in the cycle of birth and death. (Again rila Prabhupda emphasizes) Forka-kath,topics about Ka consciousness, there must be a speaker and a hearer, both of whom can be interested in Ka consciousness if they are no longer interested in material topics. (Once more he puts emphasis on purity) For topics concerning Uttamaloka, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, the spiritual master speaks, and the disciple hears with attention. Unless both of them are free from material desires, they cannot be interested in topics of Ka consciousness. Other Point 6: (Result of Ka kath between a perfect speaker and a perfect listener: Ka kath gives satisfaction) Ka consciousness is so exalted that one who is perfectly situated in Ka consciousness, under the direction of the spiritual master, is fully satisfied by readingka-kathas found inrmad-Bhgavatam, Bhagavad-gtand similar Vedic literatures. Other Point 7: (If just hearing is so glorious, what to speak of actual serving the Lord?) Since merely talking about Ka is so pleasing, we can simply imagine how pleasing it is to render service to Ka. SD: upagymd: Upa indicates intense or continuous glorification. In other words, We loudly praise this medicine, as it has cured us of our disease. What more can be said about tasting it? You (ukadeva) are the taster. SD: bhavauadhc: Who can stop drinking the sweet topics of Ka which are like medicine to cure the disease of material existence? SD: chrotra: srotra, listener. Because such topics please the mind (manobhirmt) neither the speaker of Ka-katha nor the listener tires of hearing about Ka. SD: mano-bhirmt: Unlike other medicines, this medicine does not have a bitter taste. SD: Another meaning: Who would give up drinking the topics of Ka that are recited by r Guru? Even liberated souls loudly glorify the Supreme Lord Ka. Only those desiring wealth and material enjoyment would stop hearing about Ka. Thus Parkit Mahrja says that only a killer of animals would stop hearing Ka-katha and no one else. nivtta-tarairefers to one who no longer has any material desires (sarvopdhi-vinirmuktam). Materialistic persons want some material profit from executing devotional service, but this is not the purpose of service. The perfection of devotional service lies in complete surrender unto the lotus feet of Ka, with no material desires. One who surrenders in this way is already liberated.Jvan-mukta sa ucyate. Such a person, who is a pure devotee, does not need to change his body; indeed, he does not possess a material body, for his body has already been spiritualized. Analogy: An iron rod kept constantly within a fire will ultimately become fire, and whatever it touches will burn. Similarly, the pure devotee is in the fire of spiritual existence, and therefore his body iscin-maya;that is, it is spiritual, not material, because the pure devotee has no desire but the transcendental desire to serve the Lord. nivtta-tarair upagyamnt.Who will chant the glories of the Lord unless he is a devotee? Therefore the wordnivtta-taraiindicates the devotee, and no one else. Uttamaloka-gunuvdt. The worduttamalokameans one who is famous as the best of those who are good. The Lord is good in all circumstances. That is His natural reputation. His goodness is unlimited, and He uses it unlimitedly. A devotee is also sometimes described asuttamaloka, meaning that he is eager to glorify the Supreme Personality of Godhead or the Lords devotees. Glorifying the Lord and glorifying the Lords devotees are the same. Or, rather, glorifying the devotee is more important than glorifying the Lord directly. One cannot be liberated from material contamination without sincerely serving a devotee of Ka. The worduttamaloka-gunuvdarefers to the transcendental qualities of the Supreme Lord, such as His affection for mother Yaod and His friends the cowherd boys and His loving attitude toward thegops. The Lords devotees like Mahrja Yudhihira are also described by the qualificationuttamaloka-gunuvda. The wordanuvdarefers to describing the qualities of the Supreme Lord or His devotees. When these qualities are described, other devotees are interested in hearing them. The more one is interested in hearing about these transcendental qualities, the more one transcendentally enjoys. Everyone, therefore, including themumukus, thevimuktasand thekarms, should chant and hear the glories of the Lord, and in this way everyone will benefit. Bhavauadhtmeans from the universal remedy. Chanting the holy name and glorifying the Supreme Lord are the universal remedy for all the miseries of materialistic life. Persons who desire to be freed from this material world are calledmumuku. Therefore the very sound vibration of the Lords glorification and name are pleasing to the ears, and by understanding the absolute nature of the Lords name, form and qualities the devotee becomes joyful. Even those who are not devotees, however, enjoy the pleasing narrations of the Lords transcendental activities. Because glorification of the Lords pastimes is very pleasing to the ear and heart of the devotee, it is simultaneously his subject and object. In this world there are three kinds of men: those who are liberated, those trying to be liberated, and those entangled in sense enjoyment. Those who are already liberated chant and hear the holy name of the Lord, knowing perfectly that to glorify the Lord is the only way to keep oneself in a transcendental position. Those who are trying to be liberated may regard the chanting and hearing of the Lords holy name as a process of liberation, and they too will feel the transcendental pleasure of this chanting. As forkarmsand persons engaged in sense gratification, they also may take pleasure in hearing the pastimes of the Lord, like His fighting on the Battlefield of Kuruketra and His dancing in Vndvana with thegops. Although the sound vibration of the transcendental qualities of the Lord is equally beneficial to all, for those who are muktas, liberated, it is especially pleasing. Themumukus, persons desiring to be liberated, do not depend on the pleasures of the senses; instead, they concentrate fully on becoming liberated by chanting the holy name of the Lord. Karmslike to create something pleasing to their ears and hearts, and although they sometimes like to chant or hear the glories of the Lord, they do not do it openly. Devotees, however, always spontaneously hear, chant about and remember the activities of the Lord, and by this process they are fully satisfied, even though these may seem like topics of sense gratification. Simply by hearing the transcendental narrations of the Lords activities, Parkit Mahrja was liberated. He was thereforerotramano-bhirma;that is, he glorified the process of hearing. This process should be accepted by all living entities. To distinguish persons who are bereft of these transcendental pleasures, Parkit Mahrja has used the words virajyeta pumn. The wordpumnrefers to any person, whether man, woman or in-between. Because of the bodily conception of life, we are subject to lamentation, but one who has no such bodily conceptions can take pleasure in transcendental hearing and chanting. Therefore a person fully absorbed in the bodily concept of life is surely killing himself by not making spiritual progress. Such a person is calledpau-ghna. They cannot enter into the transcendental pleasure of chanting and hearing the holy name of the Lord.2nd reason (verse 5) I should also hear the topics of Ka because He is the protector of our dynasty, 3rd reason (verse 6) I must certainly hear about Ka because He is my only protector and 4th reason (verse 7) Kas topics should be heard because He along bestows the final goal on all those with material bodies (khila deha bhjam).Taking shelter of the lotus feet of Lord Ka (Text 5-7)SB 10.1.5-7Taking the boat of Kas lotus feet, my grandfather Arjuna and others crossed the ocean of the Battlefield of Kuruketra, in which such commanders as Bhmadeva resembled great fish that could very easily have swallowed them. By the mercy of Lord Ka, my grandfathers crossed this ocean, which was very difficult to cross, as easily as one steps over the hoofprint of a calf. Because my mother surrendered unto Lord Kas lotus feet, the Lord, Sudarana-cakra in hand, entered her womb and saved my body, the body of the last remaining descendant of the Kurus and the Pavas, which was almost destroyed by the fiery weapon of Avatthm. Lord r Ka, appearing within and outside of all materially embodied living beings by His own potency in the forms of eternal time that is, as Paramtm and as vir-rpa gave liberation to everyone, either as cruel death or as life. Kindly enlighten me by describing His transcendental characteristics. SB(10.14.58):samrit ye pada-pallava-plavamahat-pada puya-yao murrebhavmbudhir vatsa-pada para padapada pada yad vipad na tem By taking shelter of Lord Ka, one comes under the safest protection. Thus when the Pavas took shelter at the lotus feet of Ka, all of them were on the safe side of the Battlefield of Kuruketra. Parkit Mahrja, therefore, felt obliged to think of Ka in the last days of his life. This is the ideal result of Ka consciousness:ante nryaa-smti. Other Point 1: Moreover, apart from Lord Kas personal contact with the Pavas, Ka is the Supersoul of all living entities, and He gives everyone liberation, even if one is not a pure devotee. E.g. Kasa. Other Point 2: (Same point as in previous purport) Ka consciousness is beneficial to everyone, whether one is a pure devotee or a nondevotee. This is the glory of Ka consciousness. Considering this, who will not take shelter at the lotus feet of Ka? Other Point 3: Ka is described in this verse asmy-manuyabecause He descends exactly like a human being. He is not obliged to come here, likekarms,or ordinary living beings; rather, He appears by His own internal energy (sambhavmy tma-myay) just to show favor to the fallen conditioned souls. Other Point 4: The wordmah-ratharefers to a great hero who can fight alone against eleven thousand other heroes, and the word atiratha refers to one who can fight against an unlimited number. Other Point 5: My-manuyasya. Because of being covered byyoga-my, Ka is sometimes calledmy-manuya,indicating that although He is the Supreme Personality of Godhead, He appears like an ordinary person. Other Point 6: The wordmyalso indicates mercy, and sometimes it also means knowledge. Point 6 cont.: The Lord is always full of all transcendental knowledge, and therefore although He acts like a human being, He is the Supreme Personality of Godhead, full of knowledge. In His original identity, the Lord is the controller ofmy. Therefore the Lord may be calledmy-manuya,or the Supreme Personality of Godhead playing like an ordinary human being, although He is the controller of both the material and spiritual energies. Point 7: For the willing devotee the Lord gives intelligence by which to understand Him and return home, back to Godhead. For others, for nondevotees, the Lord says, mtyu sarva-hara cham. Point 8: The wordkla, meaning black, indicates the color of the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Ka. Lord Ka and Lord Rmacandra, who both look blackish, give liberation and transcendental bliss to Their devotees. Point 9: Among persons possessing material bodies, sometimes someone is able to subject death to his own will. For such a person, death is almost impossible because no one wants to die. But although Bhmadeva possessed this power, Bhma, by the supreme will of the Lord, died very easily in the Lords presence. Point 10: There have also been many demons who had no hope of salvation, yet Kasa attained salvation by the supreme will of the Lord. Not to speak of Kasa, even Ptan attained salvation and reached the level of the Lords mother. Point 11: Parkit Mahrja, therefore, was very eager to hear about the Lord, who has inconceivable qualities by which to give liberation to anyone. Parkit Mahrja, at the point of his death, was certainl
