It never ceases to amaze us how too many workplaces seem to lack an element of fun. It’s almost as though fun is a forbidden “F” word!

There are numerous research papers that prove a fun environment creates an atmosphere where employee productivity and retention is heightened and prolonged. Oh and we’ve heard every excuse why fun isn’t as high up the ranks as it deserves to be; some of the best include excuses such as: • It’sunprofessional • We’retoobusy • Theclientswouldn’tapprove • It’sbecausethestaffaren’tfun • It’stooexpensive

In a word – Poppycock!

Fun doesn’t have to mean frivolous activity and a lack of attention to the tasks at hand. It can be an ambient feeling about the place, a good belly laugh here and there, increased team cohesion.

A fun environment will make productivity improve. A fun workplacetypicallyhasstaffthatenjoystheirworkmore;theyare calmer, less stressed and happier. People in good spirits are typically more productive. This improved mental attitude produces more oxygen, endorphins and blood flow to the brain. That in turn leads directly to clearer thinking and creativity.

A fun workplace is more productive, but it also attracts more of the right people and the profits are right there also.

Stop for a moment and glance around your workplace team. Are there smiles abound? A chortle? A good laugh? If not then you might have a bad case of terminal seriousness.

Children have got it right… they laugh on average some 400+ times a day but by the time we hit adulthood and reach the ripe old age of mid-thirties that has plummeted to some 15 times a day. A sombre thought!

Okay, so if you’re still reading then you might want to know some steps to increase fun in your workplace. As Chartered Accountants and Business Developers we are amongst two industry types that are stereotyped as being highly

professional. The fundamental rule is to lose the preconceived notion that professionalism means being “serious” all the time. It’s perfectly okay to take yourself a little more lightly and still be professional, competent and productive. A true fun environment will need to percolate from the top. If your Managers or Directors looklikethey’vebeenweanedoffmother’sbreastandontolemons you’ve likely got your work cut out for you!

Fun is a bit of a continuum and it’s important to determine what is appropriatefunandwhatisnot.Forexampleajokecanbefun, butthat’s a double edged sword if it’s racist, sexist or inappropriate. Now don’t get us wrong – political correctness can go too far as well. There’s a happy medium in there somewhere and this will differfromworkplacetoworkplace.

Addingfunisbesttostartoffgraduallysoasnottoblurthelinesofprofessional and fun. A standing start of boring to fun on steroids will likely be met with scepticism and be short lived. It’s about making the fun regular, appropriate, consistent and sustainable. At our weekly Martz Group team meeting the chairperson for the dayischargedwiththeresponsibilityoffindingajoke, aquizoranactivitytoconcludethemeetingwith. It’salwaysenjoyablewaitingto find out what we are going to have to do and because the chair role is shared by the entire team, from top to bottom, the activities are as varied as the individuals who dream them up.

Let’s talk about the clients, the customers… they know all too well thedifferencebetweenafunbusinessandasolemn(a.k.a.“boring”one). It’s not about pouncing on clients when they arrive and dousing them with glitter and party poppers – even a sincere smile and well natured handshake can be an introduction of more fun. Themed days can be too extreme for some but totally appropriate for others. A toy box for visiting children and actually getting on the floor with them and emptying it out for them to search for a toy can be a living example of being a more fun place to visit.

Your challenge should you accept it is to really concentrate of making your workplace a more fun environment. Already fun? Great! Set about to ensure that the fun doesn’t get diluted with the day to day business activities. Fun can be a core culture but it still takesefforttomaintainit.Ifyouneedaculturecheck-upfromtheneck up then feel free to call us and we can pop out and share a viewpoint, totally complimentary.

By Rt Hon John Key, Prime Minister

Helping Kiwis get ahead

The National-led Government continues to work hard to make New Zealand an even better place to live, work and raise a family and we have emplaced a number of important policies that will benefit families.

One of these is our HomeStart package which will help an estimated 90,000 low and middle income first home buyers into their own home over the next five years.

New Zealanders will now be able to withdraw more money from their KiwiSaver to put towards a deposit to buy their first home. We are also increasing the amount and eligibility for government grants - couples are now eligible to apply for up to $20,000 to put towards a deposit to buy a house.

On top of that, more people will be able to get Welcome Home Loans, which means they can buy a house with a smaller deposit–normally it’s only 10 percent. Christchurch City and Selwyn District house price limits for HomeStart and Welcome Home Loans will be $450,000.

The National-led Government also announced it is developing special legislation for a new housing development on Yaldhurst and Steadmans Roads in Riccarton that will see 600 new homes built.

Paid parental leave has also increased from 14 weeks to 16 weeks and will increase again to 18 weeks on 1 April, 2016. Parental tax credits for lower income families have gone from a maximum of $150 a week to $220 a week and been extended from eight to 10 weeks.

The adult minimum wage has also increased by 3.5 percent – up from $14.25 to $14.75 an hour. This increase strikes the right balance between supporting our lowest-paid workers and ensuring that wages are affordable for small businesses. Since National came into government, the minimum wage has increased by $2.50 an hour- or 17 percent.

Benefit and superannuation payments to more than one million New Zealanders have also been increased. From July 1, funding for free doctor’s visits and prescriptions for children will be extended from under-sixes to those under 13. More than 400,000 young Kiwis will benefit from this investment.

Compared to other developed countries, New Zealand’s economy is doing well with one of the fastest growth rates. There are 80,000 more people employed than there were last year, and wages are rising faster than the rate of inflation. Families are also benefiting from lower price increases and a long period of stable, low interest rates.

The National-led Government remains focused on working hard to help New Zealanders and their families get ahead and I look forward to keeping you updated on our progress.

When things look cheap it’s usually because the economic climate looks dicey and there are many things that could go wrong, like in 2008.

By the time things have stabilised and there are tangible signs of improvement, prices have already moved to reflect this and there aren’t as many bargains around. At the moment, there are varying points of view about how stable the economic outlook is, but there is a lot more agreement about how expensive markets are looking.

It’s tough to find anything offering great value at the moment. Bonds and fixed interest investments have seen their prices bid up so high that they are offering very low interest rates. Shares have had an outstanding run over the last five years and it would take the most one-eyed of property investors to argue that bargains are easy to find in the local real estate market.

For investors that have established portfolios, this isn’t a major issue. For new investors with lump sums they would like to put to work, things are much more challenging. Jumping right in with the proceeds of your business or farm sale is hugely disconcerting. The obvious worry is that you’ll get your timing dead wrong and end up making your investment just before things go pear-shaped.

Doing nothing doesn’t make complete sense either. I’ve seen plenty of investors sit on the sidelines waiting for the perfect time to invest, when all of the risks subside and prices look more reasonable. Those stars rarely align and those investors often remain permanently on the sidelines, avoiding most of the risks but also most of the returns.

One of the most sensible ways to approach this conundrum is to simply invest your lump sum in installments, rather than all at once. By splitting your capital into several pieces and investing it over the course of a year, or even longer, you reduce a lot of the market timing risk.

Markets tend to rise over the long term, but along the way they move in cycles, rising and falling as the economy and investor confidence ebbs and flows. You’ll end up buying some assets at high prices, but also some at much better prices. Don’t be afraid to hold a little more cash than usual as you get set. The four percent bank term deposit rate isn’t great, but it isn’t terrible either, especially when you consider where inflation is.

Passing the baton

Kevin Vincent is managing director of Vincent Consulting Limited. www.vincentconsulting.co.nz

Management has always required people with high levels of competence and performance to competently carry out the duties and responsibilities of the role and secondly to lead others.

At the end of the day the senior management leadership challenge is to add value and this can be achieved by building the confidence of those we lead.

It is critically important that we direct, lead and inspire the next generation of managers so as to ensure they have the skills to carry the flag in the future. The best new managers are continually being trained by their senior managers and peers and are teaching themselves to become better at their roles through learning and growth.

Many young managers today will readily understand and comprehend the ‘what’ and ‘why’ of management however, may struggle with having the confidence to put this knowledge in to practice.

This is a dilemma that many companies senior management teams face and the following suggestions may assist. It is only experience that can bring these new managers' skills to life and be meaningful.

Here are some tips to assist you with your next managers.

Firstly, set meaningful objectives and goals. Goals should be SMART, (specific, measurable, achievable, relevant and timely). Goals will clarify the direction and what is expected to be accomplished. Goals should be linked to your strategic plan.

Practice modelling. Model the behaviours required by setting an example with your own behaviour. There is a theory called operant conditioning and this relates to a concept of consequence. The probability that a person performs in a certain way is a function of previous consequences. From this we can see that responses following desired behaviours will occur more and responses followed by undesirable consequence will be less.

Be an encourager and motivator. Positively reinforce good behaviours. Examples of positive reinforcement are praise and recognition. By contrast, negative reinforcement is often seen as punishment.

Management is not an easy task and it is expected those in management positions can deliver on a number of skills or competencies. These include: organising, time management, problem solving, decision making, mentoring and motivation, goal setting, effective listening, conflict management, self-control and communication.

The kitchen has traditionally been described as the heart of the home, so the Christchurch branch of Moda Kitchens is transforming this all-important space into a personalised haven, designed to meet the specific needs of your renovation or new build project.

During the past 14 years, Moda Kitchens has built more than 7,000 kitchens nationwide and, with a unique offering of three pricing systems, the company can meet your needs no matter what the budget, manager proprietor Roger Syme explains.

“Our top of the range kitchens are our ‘custom’ range, for discerning clients who really know what they want - this offers a full design consultation process. That’s followed by the ‘smart’ range, which is still a custom solution but offers a great value solution. Then we have our ‘modular’ range, which is a value flat pack option and is great for local builders and building firms.

“The kitchen is the busiest part of the home,” Roger says. “But for many people this space simply isn’t performing for them.”

Whether you’re building or renovating, Moda Kitchens has the ability to design your kitchen around your needs. Highly experienced kitchen design professionals can

design your kitchen to meet your lifestyle, rather than fitting your lifestyle around your existing kitchen.

With the full manufacturing facility onsite at the showroom at 9 Klondyke Drive in Hornby, and a full manufacturing facility in Auckland meeting the needs of the North Island, Moda Kitchens is a great option for nationwide building firms looking for a New Zealand kitchen supplier that offers a full design, manufacturing and installation package with a competitive price that is prepared to talk to customers directly about their kitchen options.

“Having a locally based showroom is a big advantage,” Roger says.

“We cover everything from design and manufacture through to installation from the one location – with designers who can consult with the client, a showroom to demonstrate what they’re getting and the manufacturing plant to give them what they want and expect.”

Sophisticated technology offering a seamless process from design to manufacture ensures delivery time is kept to a minimum – generally between three to four weeks from order.

“Our design software goes from design to manufacture, without the need to change software. It’s a seamless process that involves pushing a button and the design goes through to the plant for manufacture using semi-automated CNC technology,” Roger says.

“We don’t do things by hand.”

Moda Kitchens not only provides kitchens, but has the capability to offer laundries, wardrobes and even does some vanities. “As a joinery manufacturer we have the capabilities to produce almost any item,” Roger says.

“We also do renovations and carry out just as many kitchen renovations as we do new builds, with a free client consultation as part of the service.”

For many years, solid surface bench tops were a luxury item few could take advantage of. Acrylic resins act as a reinforcing agent, adding extra strength while creating a non-porous surface that can be repaired if scratched or chipped, offering the ideal upgrade.

Solid surface bench tops are now one of the key aspects to Moda Kitchens’ offerings. “One of our most competitive features is that we import our own solid surface bench tops and can offer an upgrade from Formica at an extremely competitive price.”

The most classic colour scheme of all time – black and white – is increasingly popular at the moment and works well for both traditional and modern style kitchens. It’s a colour combo which, unlike its colourful predecessors, never goes out of style.

“People are generally going for a clean, crisp white look, or mixing it up with the combination of white and black. We’re predominantly seeing the white bench tops against light cabinetry, or dark cabinetry contrasted against the white bench tops,” Roger says.

“Another key trend coming through from Europe is thinner bench tops and people are starting to look for bench tops with a 20-30mm thickness now. They’re looking for the clean minimalistic look with strong continuous lines and that’s also coming through in the popularity of handle-less options in the cabinetry.”

By continuing to innovate, source new products to cut out the middle men, Moda Kitchens can continue to offer value for money with the best product at the best possible price.

As a tradesperson in an unprecedented build environment, there are multiple challenges.

I have been working with numerous clients, helping them move away from tenders and into negotiated contracts. This allows them to have greater control over the work, often deliver greater quality and it removes a whole heap of uncertainties.

Simon Construction director Izaac Simon knows firsthand that working under a negotiated contract removes a lot of risk for both the builder and the client. “When you go in with a tender, you have to account for all unknowns, so you factor them in, then you have to consider escalation, the availability of subbies who often bump their prices up due to demand, thus the price is front-loaded to deal with situations you don’t even know if you will have to manage.”

Izaac says when pricing a negotiated contract, you don’t need to cater for all contingencies, so the client is not having to pay big premiums for unknowns. “You get paid for what you do and then deal with each unforeseen issue as it comes up via a variation.”

I have seen many projects stall in the pricing stage because no one holds the all-powerful crystal ball. I advise clients to use and strengthen their trade relationships.

If a builder can get involved in a project right from the beginning, they can have input into pre-construction planning which can return savings. Then throughout the negotiated contact, any issues can be dealt with in a factual way, in good faith and ensuring the best outcomes are achieved for everyone.

Most importantly, the builder needs to know each sub-trade will do its part of the job properly and on time. A negotiated contract is harder to mange but, in many cases, it is the superior business model in this current climate.

With many companies buying contracts, those wanting a future that extends well beyond the rebuild, then it is working relationships, trust and integrity in the marketplace now that will help that happen. With negotiated contracts, there is 100 percent clarity and communication.

The key piece of advice in all this, is know your numbers. You must know what your margins are, you must learn from back costing and effective, transparent working records are mandatory.

You also need to know what future work is in the pipeline, make sure you do not over commit and that your supporting trades are in that same position.

Systemise your way to success

Sometimes the difference between winning new business or losing to a competitor comes down to how your online forms work – or don’t work.

If a potential new customer has a problem completing your online form whether it be an enquiry form, a registration form or a booking form, or a form that is part of your E-commerce checkout process, then that user will abandon your site and go elsewhere with their business.

Why cause unnecessary frustration to your customers or potential customers? Here are some of the most common issues users come across when trying to complete a form.

Too many questions - Forms are not exciting to complete; they are a chore, so make that chore as painless as possible. Too many questions just get boring!

Hard to answer questions - Give some help as to what information is being asked for by adding a tip/help tool next to the question.

Length of fields - Not providing enough space for an answer is a no-no. I often come across name fields that assume all users have short surnames.

Errors when submitting the form - The form has been completed but it just won’t send. There is nothing more frustrating than completing a lengthy form only for there to be a submission error. Regularly test all of your forms to make sure they work.

Error messages - We have all experienced an error message that says ‘You must fill out all of the required fields’ but you don’t know what fields they are referring to. Make it clear which fields are required/compulsory. Error messages should ideally show as soon as the error has occurred. Don’t wait for the user to complete the form and then advise of errors.

Success message - When forms are submitted it is important to provide an onscreen or email/text notification.

Form response - If you have an enquiry form or a quote request form on your website then make sure those requests are not ignored.

Form validation - Validating that you are a real person is a fairly standard request these days on forms. If you are asking a user to read distorted text and type in a specific area, make sure it is readable or at least give users the option of seeing an alternative captcha code to read.

Why don’t you go to your website now and test those forms?

‘Systems’ may not be the sexiest topic when it comes to workplace wellbeing, but that doesn’t mean they should be neglected - especially at the expense of some fashionable one-hit wonder project.

In fact, once you understand the power systems can have on a growing business, you might be surprised just how fun and alluring systems can be!

An important point to remember is that once you find a process that works, any success is likely to be short lived unless it can be repeated again and again. Systems, including a culture of accountability, make it possible for everyone in an organisation to repeatedly implement a winning formula (and hopefully improve on it too!).

If a success cannot be repeated, then it’s not properly systemised. Without a system, future efforts to achieve the same success are likely to mean duplication of effort and poor use of resources, including human resources; i.e. staff burnout.

One of my favourite role models is Southwest Airlines. Study the success recipe Southwest use and you’ll notice two important underlying ingredients: a culture of fun, and a culture that’s evolved as a result of systematically and continually implementing new and better ways to do things throughout the business.

Another great example of SEXing up a business is Dell Computers. According to Michael Dell himself, from the outset, he continually asked “What’s the most efficient way to accomplish this task?” The sales force had to set up their own computers rather than simply requesting one from tech support. This gave them and the Dell management team a real sense of what a customer would need to go through to set up their own PC system.

In both cases, the proven benefits of Systemically Executing Xcellence in their organisations translated to peak performing teams and a strong bottom line.

For a 20+ year period leading up to 1996, Southwest was the only airline in the United States to report an unbroken record of continuous profits. Considering the industry type and the economic conditions during this period, that’s a truly remarkable record.

Dell started his business from a college dorm in 1983 with $1,000 of capital. By 1999, it was an $18 billion company, the second-largest manufacturer and marketer of computers in the world.

And in 2015, both companies continue to lead the way in their respective fields with cultures of wellbeing and sustained systemised success. Now that’s sexy!

EVENTS DIARYWhat’s happening on the business

and entertainment front

Of course we are talking about the new Child Support laws that changed on the 1st April, 2015.

It would be fair to say there has been a lot of phone calls and checking going on since they were introduced.

Child support, at heart, is designed to help provide for children when their parents don’t live together and it’s been in existence for about 20 years with no significant changes across that time. It was touted the overhaul was to better reflect family life today.

The sweeping changes are an attempt to break away from the old “one size fits all” methodology and so now both parents' incomes and circumstances are taken into account.

The child support system looks after an estimated 200,000 children.

The new rules take into account both mum and dad’s income (after allowing for personal living costs), the amount of time the child(ren) spend at each parent’s home and the child’s age. The new rules recognise that teenagers cost more (no surprises there!). The personal living costs allowance does take into account other children living with them.

The new rules even allow for non-parent carers to apply for child support where the child lives with neither parent (e.g. grandparents).

Like anything IRD related, if your circumstances change, then you need to keep them advised; they’re not mind readers. You can even keep track of your child support payments online now and stay abreast of how much you’ll need to pay or receive using the new formula on the IRD website: www.ird.govt.nz/childsupport

Do you need an accountant to help you? Probably not, but if you are self-employed and have multiple income streams, then things can get a bit challenging to calculate and it certainly pays to do it once and do it right.

It’s fair to say we have seen a lot of very surprised parents, on both sides of the fence. Some pleasantly surprised and others shocked. The most common surprise we have noticed is where less is payable because the other parent’s income is now being brought to account.

Is the new system fair? Well that would be a personal rather than professional opinion, but suffice to say it appears well thought out and more equitable between the two parents, and after 20 years the system needed a good thorough shake-up.

So it’s not a sex tax, but rather a system of helping raise children where the parents live apart.

Is it a sex tax?

Travelling in and around Christchurch as I do on a daily basis, it’s wonderful to see measurable progress being made in the central city rebuild. While this is exciting, I can’t but fail to see the vast amount of concrete, glass and steel in use, and very often, new buildings with walls of glass on two, and even three sides. Why is this of concern?

Well, essentially for me it comes down to caring about health and sustainability. Even though glass buildings can look amazing, very often the reality is that glass has been chosen as the cheapest ‘building’ option. However, unless constructed with a green approach, glass buildings can prove costly, even if not at the build stage. In truth, the people who end up paying more in the long run are the business tenants and the people working there.

The workers who struggle to cope with heat and lighting issues and the business owners and shareholders, who not only pay for increased energy bills, but perhaps even more importantly, suffer the cost of reduced productivity and increased absenteeism among their staff as a result. Why?

An issue I commonly come across in the course of my work in these beautiful glass buildings is ‘fry’ or ‘freeze’. People working close to the glass struggle to control the light – the glare on their screens or the glare from roofs and ceilings in adjacent buildings - which makes it impossible to see what they’re working on at certain times of day, while they ‘fry’ in the sun. Meanwhile, the people on the other side of the building often freeze as air conditioning systems pump out cool air to chill those over on the hot side.

However, some glass buildings work well. The twin skin glass facade building constructed in Auckland for Sampson Corporation in 2012 has a 6 Green Star Office Design rating, (the highest achievable level from the NZ Green Building Council) and is definitely a shining light when it comes to building healthy communities.

If you are still in the planning stages, or involved in the design or construction of new commercial spaces, think about those end users and longer term tenants.

Keeping the costs down for the long term and keeping the environment in a better place than where we started has to be good for yourself, our businesses and the community at large.

The art ofhis craft By Davina Richards

Many people talk about the next big thing and although craft beer is regarded by many as mainstream these days, Blenheim boy Josh Scott knew he was onto something when he had his eyes opened to a world of full flavoured, quality beers during an OE to Europe and the US in his late teens.

News | Cover Story

Page 13: Canterbury Today Magazine Ct132

www.canterburytoday.co.nz   May 2015 | 13

The son of Allan Scott of Allan Scott Wines, his refined tasting palate blossomed like a fine wine and now stands as a pioneer in the craft beer movement in New Zealand.

Being a successful entrepreneur, qualified winemaker and a Cicerone is thirsty work for Marlborough’s Moa Beer founder.

HomelandJosh used his father’s old shed located at the back of the famous Marlborough vineyard to brew his very first beers and suffice to say, his batch of home brew didn’t exactly taste like the award winning craft beer you savour today.

A Christ’s College boy, Josh left school and completed a Diploma in Viticulture and Wine Production from the Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology. A stint in Loire, France and Napa Valley, California soon followed, where he absorbed all the knowledge he could in winemaking. It was during these stints that Josh discovered a new world of beers – the traditional European classic brews, and the modern “new world craft beer” brews in the US.

Up-skilled and armed with experience and a new appreciation for beer, his return to the shire in 1999 saw him graduate to head winemaker at his father’s winery. But Josh was ready to go out on his own, and so in 2013 the Moa Brewing Company was founded in Blenheim’s Jacksons Road in the world famous Marlborough winemaking region; brewing super premium handcrafted beers the traditional way – made the way beer used to be made before mass production altered the equation.

At its inception, apart from lacking capital and trying to sell high-end beer to places that had never stocked it before, which Josh described as a “hard slog”, it was FreshChoice in Merivale, Christchurch that gave Moa Beer its first break, placing it on their shelves.

Josh explains the challenge to get his beer out there was mostly about “building a relationship and trust with an account for them to give it a go, and then making sure it pulled through once it was on shelf”.

Seventeen years later with eight beers and one cider in its full time range, plus a bunch of limited edition Special Reserve brews, as well as exporting to Australia, Brazil, Cambodia, Canada, China, Ireland, Singapore, Malaysia, US and Vietnam, Moa Beer is led by a 20-strong team who have many reasons to raise a glass or two.

The company sponsored the New Zealand Olympic team for the 2012 London Games and has signed on again for the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics in Brazil and, as of late won awards at the New Zealand Brewers Guild Awards 2014, the Australian International Beer Awards 2014 and the Dublin Craft Beer Cup Awards 2014.

Although New Zealand’s craft beer industry is in good health, Josh says “There’s a large amount

of room for growth and improvement. I do think we still need to educate the drinking public more. Beer has a very interesting history, and when you put beers into context, this knowledge can greatly boost appreciation.”

Looking ahead Moa Beer has got a lot of work to do as it focusses on growing sales domestically and internationally for its shareholders. The company intends to keep rolling out limited edition special reserve brews, too.

“Australia is still in the early stages on the pick up of craft beer, but as the country is five times the size of New Zealand, there is huge potential and we’ve got some clever plans to convert the Crown, VB and Little Creatures diehards.”

The company is also launching a range of sour beers. “While an acquired taste, the process involved in brewing these is closest to the origins of beer making from 7,000 years ago. Sours are a fast growing market in USA and we seem to follow these trends in New Zealand.”

Last year Moa Original Lager was the company’s best selling beer in the country, with Moa Session Pale Ale quick on its heels. Abroad, Moa Methode Pilsner sells well across the board “but some of the specialist brews such as Moa St Josephs (9.5 percent Belgian Tripel) and Moa Imperial Stout (10.2 percent Oak Aged Stout Ale) are going great guns in the more advanced craft beer markets.”

On a more personal level, Josh plans to become a Master Cicerone in 2015. “With only a dozen in the world reaching this title, it is no walk in the park. My biggest strength is my palate and I love history/geography and this helps when learning about beer and wine. For the certified Cicerone I tasted near on 1,000 beers, so I am looking forward to the ‘research’ involved in my Masters and hopefully passing this knowledge on to others keen to school up in the industry.”

This is the packageThe company’s marketing department has come under scrutiny from the media in the past for its controversial marketing campaigns, but Moa Beer’s new pioneer inspired packaging and its ongoing ‘How to Brew a Country’ campaign is a nod to New Zealand’s “unsung heroes”.

“Yes, our marketing department has definitely had its fair share of media scrutiny and we’ve taken a lot of the negative (and positive) feedback on board for sure. Right now we think we’ve made the necessary changes to have our ducks in a row for the future, and How to Brew a Country is just one of the ways we’re firing the marketing machine.

“While still in its infancy, it’s about relating back to New Zealand’s pioneering days and raising a glass to unsung heroes. The concept came about when we were searching the National Library of New Zealand’s archives for images of Kiwis

doing great things – and found a shot of a bloke called Sammy Turner (now the star of our latest Session Pale Ale packs), who we uncovered was not only the first man to ascend Mt Cook alone in 1919, but also claimed the world record for skipping in 1911.

“We thought this was pretty cool, so we went to work tracking down his great grandson for the ok to use the image, and it turned out he had no idea of his great-grandfather’s achievements. It made us think that there must be a whole raft of stories of New Zealanders who exemplify our innovative, hard working and adventurous national psyche, so the campaign is really a call to action to celebrate this.”

His personal favourite story from How to Brew a Country is about the company’s CEO’s dad. “Geoff’s dad was not a boat builder, but after talking to a few people decided he would give it a crack himself and started by milling his own timber. He ended up building a huge yacht from scratch using materials sourced almost exclusively from the family’s land. Just incredible stuff, really. I can’t imagine someone doing that nowadays and I like the sentiment that if someone else is out there making something happen there is no reason you can’t either.”

Moa Beer is calling to hear more great tales and memories to “save from extinction”.

Behind the sceneWe don’t often hear about the people who work behind the scenes of a business and who contribute a great deal to its success, so it would be almost rude not to mention one of Moa Beer’s most influential employees who has been integral to the company’s success.

One of Josh’s best executive decisions was hiring David Nicholls, ex-Heineken head brewer, to become part of the Moa Beer family; he became Moa Beer’s head brewer in 2007.

“After working for many years for corporate brewers David had moved to Marlborough to ‘relax’, but I was able to convince him to come and work for Moa when I caught him critiquing one of my brews at a beer festival.

“He has brought a lot of experience and systems to a small brewery and greatly improved the quality of our beers without us having to expand the operation – no mean feat when we have a 1,000L brew-plant at Jacksons Road and have gone from producing 30,000 litres per year to over a million.”

You may be interested to know that David (Head Brewer) is a qualified skydiver, Geoff (CEO) is an accomplished freediver, and James (Moa Cellar Hand) is a pro golfer. “The list goes on… although Gareth (our GM) has no considerable talent I know of except an ability to drink us all under the table (responsibly, of course).”

Technology is a beautiful thing. It enables us to communicate to one another in a variety of ways, from text messaging, Skype, emails, to social networking and telephone calls. No matter where in the world we are we can obtain information fast, efficiently and instantly. Communication is the currency of the world, so when our home life or working life depends on getting information on a daily basis to keep things moving forward, do we pick up the phone or write an email? Which is necessary and which is most successful?

Some of us dread receiving (or making) phone calls; just the sound of it rings through your entire body and can leave you in a sense of trepidation. Even a withheld number coming through can induce a sense of panic and questioning. Phone calls however, remain the quickest form of two-way communication, allowing the day go a lot smoother so you can get the job done faster.

Emails are another quick way of getting hold of information. Although when I say ‘quick’ I mean you can send a direct email in a flash, but getting a response back may take some time; hours, days, weeks, or not at all in some cases.

Here’s a run down of the advantages and disadvantages of emails vs. phone calls.

Email pros:• Fast communication

• Does not put someone on the spot – who wants to be ambushed when they answer a phone call?

• It’s all on record. Working with email means you can search, review and refresh your memory at any point

• No awkward silences or interruptions – email possesses this turn-taking nature which is great when you just want to get the information you need and avoid beating around the bush or awkwardness that can be found with phone calls

• Flexible – emails mean you can take time to digest information, process a request, plan and get back to someone with a thoughtful response when you have the time

• Considered courtesy before giving someone a call – in some cases it’s better to fire an email and then follow up with a phone call.

Email cons:• Emails are not necessarily dealt with straight

away – they’re easy to send, but also easy to ignore

• Impersonal – you don’t get to know someone on a personal level through email, although depending on the type of work that you do this can sometimes be irrelevant

• The written word can be misunderstood and communication can be unclear – written communication is not always understandable. Sometimes you find yourself spending 10 minutes simply trying to decipher someone’s email. It can also be easy to get the wrong end of the stick.

Phone call pros:• Fast – nothing’s faster than picking up the

phone and talking directly to the person you need

• Personal – phone calls allow personality to shine through and to get a sense of what someone is like. This can be valuable because it is an indicator as to whether you want to do business with them

• You may receive more information and insights which may not be shared via email – phone calls allow spontaneous responses unlike a planned email script. You may get more than you bargained for.

Phone call cons:• You can’t review a phone call at a later

time – unless you have a recorder on your phone. It’s annoying when you ask yourself “Ok, what did we just talk about?” when you get off the phone

• It’s difficult to assign time to receive or dispatch a phone call – having a busy schedule means you can’t always plan when exactly you need to make a phone call or when you’ll have the time to receive a phone call

• Interrupts work flow – phone calls can distract you from the real tasks you need to complete. If possible, only answer to select calls which you know are going to be important

• Bad connections, background noise and hard to understand accents all make for a bad phone call, which means communication is broken and potentially damaging to the work that needs to be done

• Time wasting – sometimes you can’t get down to business without asking the other person how they are before addressing the reason for the call. Small talk is just another mission when you’re working on mission impossible

To call or not to call… that is the question

• You never know if the other person you’re calling is actually available to talk to you. Meaning you either have to call them back at another time or get them to call you instead. This can be frustrating and sometimes it can feel like any time is a bad time to talk

• An arranged phone call is scheduled and therefore isn’t over until it’s done – you don’t feel like you can move on with your work until you’ve had that phone call. It hangs over your head until you can get it out of the way

• A verbal agreement will have to be written down at some point – a phone call is all well and good when you’re closing a deal, but at the end of the day the deal will need to be written down and emailed to the other party.

Obviously there are ups and downs to both emails and phone calls, but understanding your tasks and working out which is more appropriate could save yourself time and in the long run be more successful.

For example, if you’re living in different time zones it’s probably best to opt for email, whereas time sensitive matters are best dealt with by phone.

If you don’t want to leave a virtual paper trail which reveals the contents of what should have been a private and/or personal conversation, a phone call is your best choice.

Emails are another quick way of getting hold of

information. Although when I say ‘quick’ I mean

you can send a direct email in a flash, but getting

a response back may take some time; hours, days,

weeks, or not at all in some cases.

We’ve all experienced procrastination at one point or another and we know how crippling it can be. We think we have all the time in the world, but in reality, we don’t.

Keeping up with yesterdayBy Davina Richards

Sometimes the hardest tasks will be lucky to even get a glance.

And, for a minority of people, we simply just don’t want to do something. Or we don’t care. Or we play the blame game. Chronic procrastination is when we really do need to worry.

The impact of procrastinationSome people think that the outcome of constant procrastination only affects them alone, but what you need to realise is that actually procrastination can impact others around you too.

People rely upon you to get a job done so that they can get on with theirs. If you can’t deliver, there’s growing resentment from others because they depend on you.

No one wants to be viewed as an incompetent, unreliable sloth. You can apply the same scenario with friends and family. In effect, social relationships are damaged because you’ve become a burden on others, and yourself in the long run.

Procrastination is also known to take its toll on our physical, mental, and emotional well being. When we feel anxious we lose our ability to focus and stress builds up. Stress then leads to more stress and we’re stuck in this unhealthy cycle. In the end we have to fight this backlog of work and stress simultaneously.

Conquering procrastinationPlan and prioritise – define your tasks and make a start on the most important, albeit maybe not the most exciting, tasks and move your way down the list to the less important ones. Force start yourself and get the bigger projects done and dusted so you can relax and enjoy the rest of your day. If it helps, draw three columns on a piece of paper and title them ‘urgent’, ‘important’, and ‘can wait’.

This helps you to visualise your workload and it breaks them down into doable chunks.

Work in time blocks – spend half an hour focussing on your workload without looking at your phone (it would be better to turn your phone to silent), checking emails (unless it is work-related, and no, emails back and forth from colleagues at work doesn’t count), or talking to colleagues in the room. Once you’ve accomplished this, at the end of the half an hour take five minutes to relax and I guess, if you must, check Facebook, LinkedIn etc.

Find yourself twiddling your thumbs? Don’t let boredom get the better of you. Ask your boss for more work to keep you challenged and on top of your game.

Sleep - an obvious one, but we don’t always listen to what we preach; get enough sleep so you won’t lose focus and get the best out of your working day. Feel confident and in control of what you’re doing and be positive about getting it done.

Go on, treat yourself – if you can establish a certain amount of workload and achieve them within a set time-frame, go ahead and get your coffee, gym or chocolate fix.

Mind games – if you’re struggling to make a start on a project, turn your thoughts to celebrating once you’ve finished your task. For example, feel like giving up during a gym session? Imagine yourself tucking into a

slab of dark chocolate afterwards (that’s healthier, right?)

Set yourself a deadline, even if this means a deadline before the actual deadline. Imagine how good you’ll feel knowing you’re well ahead of schedule. Feel accomplished and celebrate your success.

Embrace fear – fear is the thief of joy. Instead of pondering about whether or not you can do a job, get out of your comfort zone and shake off mental debates and give yourself a pep talk. By doing this you’re still ahead of everyone who isn’t trying.

What they said“Procrastination is like a credit card: it’s a lot of fun until you get the bill.” – Christopher Parker

“I swing between procrastination and being really thorough so either way things aren’t getting done quickly.” – Freema Agyeman

“Procrastination is the art of keeping up with yesterday.” – Don Marquis

Check out unstuck.com - a free app which helps us figure out why we’re procrastinating and gives us the tools to overcome it: www.unstuck.com/how-we-procrastinate.html

For many, it seems as if procrastination has become a part of our lifestyle and it doesn’t just affect our working lives, but our personal lives too; going to the gym, going out to the supermarket (or generally just having to leave the house), tidying the house, making a phone call or even reaching out to someone.

Procrastination is a great way, if not the best way, of not getting anything done.

So why do we do it?Putting it bluntly – we make excuses. It doesn’t matter how good your intentions are, or how much self-talking you do, putting things off until the last minute can be the bane of our daily lives.

You know that feeling of ‘I’m just not in the mood today’? Well, many of us experience this on a day to day basis, but I don’t see that presentation writing itself, do you? Lack of motivation or inspiration is just one of the things we sit around waiting to happen and, well, it just doesn’t happen.

Before you know it your deadline is tomorrow and all of a sudden waiting to be in the right frame of mind is not such a magical moment after all.

We’re also pretty good at convincing ourselves that the work won’t take as long to finish as it actually will. So we keep putting it off until the time comes when we actually have to start difficult tasks and you feel like you’ve aged 50 years.

Have you been assigned a task that you have absolutely no idea how to approach or don’t understand what needs to be done? Don’t worry, just throw it into the imaginary too hard basket and forget all about it.

Here, take this simple and unimportant task to help you pass the time and make yourself feel better about being useful. Sound familiar?

We all want to be better at what we do. Being a great boss isn’t complicated, but it does require thought, patience and a bit of heart. There are many businesses out there run by less than great bosses and their management style brings the whole company down. You may even be one of these people yourself, but don’t dispair. No one intends to be a bad boss - they just don’t have the skills and knowledge to help propel themselves from mediocre to amazing.

The road to becoming a better boss begins with you. To understand how you can perform better you need to begin by examining and truthfully scrutinising your work. Once you have been honest with yourself, it’s time to put some of these tips into practise and you’ll be well on your well to becoming a better boss.

Face to faceTaking time out of your normal schedule to meet and talk with your staff is crucial to becoming a better boss. Regular face to face time with staff is important to form a relationship with them.

Let them know you care about who they are and what they think by learning a bit about them and by giving them the chance to be heard directly from the top. Let employees know that management cares and they are not simply another cog in the wheel. If you don’t meet with them frequently they can feel like their job isn’t important.

Equal treatment Treat everyone equally; if individual employees are given special treatment and singled out as the ‘teacher’s pet’ other staff members will quickly feel resentful towards yourself and the particular employee. Management often doesn’t realise when they are giving someone special treatment so make a concise effort to treat everyone the same to avoid any nasty animosity.

Challenge your staffManagers can forget to challenge their employees or fall into the trap of thinking they don’t want to be tested. But the truth is staff want new challenges, they want to learn new skills, explore different areas of their job and have the chance to progress to the next step in their career. If they feel their career path has stagnated they will begin to look elsewhere. So throw them a challenge and give your staff the opportunity to grow.

Communication To be a good leader you must be a good communicator. Keep your staff in the loop by communicating with them on a weekly basis and keep dialogue flowing in both directions by actively searching out their feedback.

Staff often have good ideas and solutions to work problems that management don’t think of. Share your thoughts, ideas, decisions and explain the reasoning behind your decisions. It helps your employees to

How to be a better bossBy Laura Baker

understand you better and the direction the company is heading in.

Hold responsibilityA business is only as good as its lowest performing employees. Rather than shifting the blame onto your team leaders for poor performing staff, take on the responsibility yourself. Your staff performance, whether it is good or bad, is the measure of your management skill.

Never stop learning Being the boss does not mean you know everything there is to know about the job. So it is vital to stay open to learning whether it is informal learning through listening to colleagues or formal learning at business workshops.

Also offer the opportunity of education and training to your staff. This could mean sending them on courses or being the teacher yourself and imparting your own knowledge with them. Set an example by allocating time for your own self development. If you are open to learning new concepts it will help others do the same.

Praise your people Bosses who micromanage spend a majority of their time correcting staff for small irrelevant slip-ups in the hope it will increase production and eliminate errors. But (surprise, surprise) giving staff a harsh word about every little mistake is not the way to get the best performance out of them.

Instead keep your eyes open for staff members doing something right and praise them for it. By putting a positive spin on your staff interactions they will feel more motivated to do a good job.

Realistic expectationsExpect of your staff only what you would realistically expect of yourself. When you are piling your staff up with work and deadlines ask yourself ‘would I be happy with this workload for myself?’ Then lead by example by putting the same expectations on yourself. Let them know you are all in the same boat together as a team and everyone is pulling their weight.

The road to becoming a better boss begins with you.

They say beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but when it comes to the residential housing developments delivered by Christchurch high-end building firm AJ Scott Construction, beauty is anything but subjective.

Property & Construction | AJ Scott Construction

The art and craft of building beautiful homes

There’s a distinguishable quality about an AJ Scott home. It’s an unmistakable attention to detail which culminates in some of the region’s most striking properties. They’re dotted throughout Fendalton, Waitikiri, West Melton, Fernside and further afield, designed and built for a wide range of discerning clients.

“Maintaining an exceptionally high standard of build and customer service at all times is our passion and the driver behind what we do,” co-owner Daryl Scott explains. “Lifting that bar and achieving a whole new expectation for the client is at the foundation of our business.”

The pursuit of perfection has seen the company pump significant time and resource into employing more than 70 of the highest calibre staff members – including its own builders, plasterers, painters, brick and block layers, project managers and quantity surveyors – to lessen their reliance on subcontractors and maintain control over the quality and timing of the firm’s projects.

In the highly competitive local labour market where many builders are struggling to find enough experienced staff, having a committed and experienced team is a huge benefit to the business and its clients.

“We spend a lot of time and money ensuring we engage the right managers, project managers and tradesmen to maintain our quality expectations,” Daryl says.

“That’s been our key. You’re only as good as the people around you, so if you want to do the best job, you need the best people.”

AJ Scott Construction also engages the use of a very select group of trades and suppliers who have been tried and tested over a number of years.

“This way we know their quality, we know we can rely on them and because health and safety is extremely important to us, this ensures our subcontractors align with that,” Daryl says.

“These houses are some of the highest spec houses being built in the region. We work with very discerning clients with very high expectations and we aim to deliver or over-deliver on those expectations, every time.”

In order to ensure AJ Scott Construction can maintain the level of quality clients have come to associate with the company, they are focussing on maintaining quality for a limited number of builds each year, rather than on continuing growth.

The company was established in 2001 by Daryl’s brother, John Scott when he returned from overseas and wanted to specialise exclusively in high-end residential homes. Daryl joined him soon after, bringing his business management, development and design expertise to the table.

Daryl has a degree in landscape architecture and worked for one of the country’s leading landscape design companies for a number of years. He brings that understanding of professionalism and quality to the construction business, and aims to deliver something that is not normally associated with independent building firms in New Zealand.

Since the early days, the company has focussed on delivering a professional service to its clients. The brothers have reflected on the positive and negative aspects of the industry, incorporating the insights into an exceptional service.

“We’ve developed efficient systems and management tools to help deliver on our quality promise,” Daryl says.

“A big part of our success is due to how we manage the job. Rather than reinventing the wheel we have maintained a traditional

structure, and tried to approach construction in a smart way.

“We’ve really stripped it back, focussing on quality of workmanship and delivery of a professional service. We saw the opportunity to provide quality that was second to none, right from concept through to completion.”

Honesty and transparency are key tenets of the business and recently implemented technology is being utilised to help keep clients up to date with their builds. The relationship with the client must be managed very carefully to make sure the process and results are a “win-win” for all parties. As this is the ultimate goal in business that all people benefit and are happy with the process and the final results.

While the focus for AJ Scott Construction is the high-end residential market, the company also handles smaller commercial builds and fit-outs. “Whether it is residential or commercial builds, the principle is the same. We’ve always maintained the attitude that ok is never good enough; it has to be perfect every time.

“Our clients are investing a lot of money for this service and they should be confident that their expectations will be met. It’s our job to take their challenge and make it a reality.”

Moving forward, Daryl says the company will continue to focus on high-spec residential housing, light commercial build and fit-out work, all the while focussing on quality. “We will continue to align ourselves with people who share that commitment to quality and doing things properly. Client feedback monitoring is an important part of our process and we will continue to utilise the insights this provides to make any improvements we can possibly make.

“We have lots of promising and exciting projects in the pipeline and the year ahead is looking really good.”

No man stands aloneSince 2001, AJ Scott Construction has been supported by a wide range of suppliers. Powered Up Electrical, Placemakers, Innovative Driveways, Trowel Trades, Manpower, Mathias Excavation, Anderson Lloyd, Canstaff, Daveron Scaffolding, Skip-2-Dump and Foleys Plumbing are just some of the companies which have played a big part in AJ Scott’s success during the years.

Versatility, diversification and flexibility are all words strongly applicable to the RNP Group. Founded as RNP Homes by Richard Preston in 2006, the company operated in Southland and Mid and South Canterbury building mostly spec houses.

Property & Construction | RNP Group

Moving to Christchurch shortly before the earthquakes, Richard seized the opportunities presented by the rebuild to grow his company exponentially to carry out not only residential repairs and new builds, but also larger commercial construction projects. This is where the versatility comes in.

The company has the expertise in the residential sphere to build across a wide range of categories – from multi-unit dwellings, to hill builds, from medium priced to very high-end architecturally-designed homes.

They recently completed an architecturally designed home in Jahan Lane, Cashmere – 375 sqm with five bedrooms and four bathrooms. That‘s in the over one million dollar category. And then there are completed medium spec builds in Fendalton, Halswell, Prebbleton, Tai Tapu, Geraldine and Timaru to name a few.

The diversity continues. Commercial work too is a feature of the RNP Group’s work, such as a 1,500 sqm premises in Wigram for Crown Forklifts, shop fit outs and renovations at The Palms, the shop fit-outs for Allpress Espresso

and the company’s own new headquarters on Montreal St.

This is a striking black Titan board building painted with an anti-graffiti coating which inside, is a real showpiece of the company’s building expertise and of the services it can provide - there’s no need for potential clients to visualise how various products might look or perform. It’s all right there in front of them as they walk around the office.

The walls are clad with GIB Readylock, the first time this product has been used internally in Christchurch. All the doors are of different designs, each individual office has different feature walls of paint or wallpaper, different styles of lighting are used throughout and some rooms demonstrate the effectiveness of sound proofing.

The heart of the versatility is now apparent because under its umbrella the RNP Group now has several other companies associated with the building industry. There is a painting company, an electrical company, a piling and retaining wall specialist company, and a skip bin company.

This enables the RNP Group to manage every aspect of the projects they undertake. Consequently clients have a great deal of confidence and reassurance that the outcome will be of the uniform exceptional standard and quality for which RNP is renowned.

Mike Pero is a name that has been synonymous with real estate since 1991. The brand has helped more than 80,000 Kiwis into their own homes, and is currently the fastest growing real estate company in New Zealand. As brand and territory owners, Marilyn

and Lindsay are making a huge impact on the Christchurch real estate market. Their Fendalton office only opened in January and was the third office they’ve opened in three years.

Their growth is a testament to their commitment to both Christchurch and the real estate market. “They have built a culture second to no others in Christchurch,” Mike Pero says.

“They work hard and they drive the results out, far and beyond, most others in the industry.”

Lindsay and Marilyn have a huge amount of experience in real estate and are passionate

Enthusiastic salespeople neededMarilyn and Lindsay Welch have 22 people working within their Mike Pero offices in Bishopdale, Fendalton and Cashmere and are currently looking for more salespeople.

In particular, they are seeking agents who speak fluent Mandarin for their Fendalton and new Riccarton branch, which is due to open in October. Mike Pero Real Estate recognise the importance of the Chinese market and were one of the first New Zealand agencies to join China’s largest real estate portal, Juwai.

“We’re looking for good, qualified salespeople to work from our new Riccarton office and they can join us now before the office opens,” Lindsay says. Mike Pero, centre, opens a new Christchurch franchise with Marilyn and Lindsay Welch

about the industry and the Mike Pero brand. “I started in real estate in 1979; then I did other things and came back to it 12 years ago,” Lindsay says.

“I couldn’t believe that it was no different to what it was in 1979. I shifted to Mike Pero three years ago and it’s a breath of fresh air to be involved in something as good as this. The business growth we’ve had in three years is phenomenal.”

Mike Pero is renowned for offering lower commission fees than most other real estate companies. However, it still provides a complete real estate service, which also includes rental property management and in-house mortgages.

Property & Construction | JG Sumby Builders

JG Sumby Builders has evolved into a respected and well organised small building company in Christchurch who aren’t just here for the rebuild, but are in it for the long run.

over the last few years include major alterations and additions, new pile and concrete foundations, re-clads and fit-outs.

“During this time we have continued working with our regular client base (PMO’s), but at the same time taken on new building projects with private customers. We have found in some cases cutting out the middle men and dealing directly with the client directly keeps the communication channel clear and in turn the job is completed in better time frames.”

In the next few years the company plans to focus on new builds, alterations and additions, and light commercial work. Jason says he expects to be in operation for years to come to ensure existing and new clients are happy with the service. “Our main goal with building in Christchurch is to achieve quality over quantity.”

JG Sumby Builders is a member of the CBANZ (Certified Builder) and offers the Homefirst Builders Guarantee, which is one of the most comprehensive independent guarantees in the business, in all its larger build contracts. “This insures the building for 10 years for: Structural defects, cover against water leaks, financial

reimbursement of monies paid if the builder is unable to complete the work, and cover for alternative accommodation and storage costs should any of the above instances arise.”

Recently the company has taken on contracts for new build work sub-contracting to a larger construction company. This involves building group housing for a developer and various architectural projects in and around greater Christchurch. JGSB also recently partnered with Architecture Orange and will be working together with Toni, the principal, to put together stylish and affordable concept plans for customers.

“Looking forward we plan to focus more on our own line of new builds which will involve working in with an experienced architect and/or draughtsman. We would like to see more eco-friendly housing being built. I have always had a keen interest in this area and plan to build a house for myself using eco-friendly techniques which will incorporate my ideas into to it and may be used as a show home to market our ideas.

“The ever changing building code, particularly in Christchurch, makes it hard to keep up and the continuity of work flow. In this environment it is not hard to find work. I think by simply doing a good honest job in turn creates repeat customer and good will.”

JG Sumby would like to thank all those companies it works with, as no business stands alone. This includes Solidi Mega Vision and Hart Business Services Ltd, who take

care of JG Sumby’s accounting and taxation obligations. Harts maintain the company’s accounting records in the “cloud” with Xero software, providing up to date transaction information via daily bank feeds. Harts also provide quality management advice ensuring best practice in JG Sumby’s operations.

Bringing your vision to life

Testimonial“Excellent communication was the key to success of our earthquake repairs and renovations with Jason Sumby at every stage from quoting to completion. We kept each other well informed of progress and any issues. His team and subcontractors completed jobs to a very high standard, and would point out any problems they were having so they were resolved easily. Our house is now stronger and looks better than ever before.”

– Prof Ken Morison

Established in 2011 by Jason Sumby, the construction company offers competitive pricing, efficient build times, a more personalised service and a better quality product.

While many companies struggle to find quality workmen, this company has chosen to streamline its workforce in order to put only its best men forward; it employs a small team comprising of two foremen, carpenters, hammer hands and a newly employed apprentice.

“The biggest challenge for us has been finding skilled tradesmen who are honest and reliable. At one stage we had well over 10 employees, but due to dishonest behaviour we much prefer having a smaller team of guys to supervise,” Jason says.

It completes all types of residential and light commercial building work, but for the last four years the bulk of its client base has been PMO’s (project management office), completing EQC work and over cap insurance work. “It has been a challenge at times not to compromise our high standards while working with set ‘m2 rates’ which the insurance companies set for a lot of the work. Some of the work we have completed

Property & Construction | GA Aluminium

When the number of staff at a new company increases tenfold in just over a year it not only indicates the company is an impressive success, but it’s a strong sign it has a quality product and knows how to keep customers happy.

This is the case at GA Aluminium Ltd, the specialists of Fairview Windows and Doors in the Canterbury region.

Business owners Gareth and Angela Lewis began manufacturing the Fairview range at its Waltham premises in February 2014.

Angela says they started out with just one employee who did the fabricating, while she and Gareth ran the quoting and administration services. Now, little more than a year later, it has a strong team of 10 employees on the factory floor.

The small family operated business credits its incredible success to the hard work and dedication the team has put into growing the business.

Angela says GA Aluminium’s size is one of the main factors it has a stream of happy customers. “We are small enough to care and have the time to spend with our customers. We enjoy being very hands on and offer a personal one on one service.”

Its strong start can also be credited to Gareth’s history in the industry. He comes from a glazing background with more than a decade’s contracting experience. The knowledge he gained in the industry is now passed onto their customers.

Services GA Aluminium has a wide range of windows and doors on offer servicing homeowners and small to medium sized building companies. It provides a full service starting with the selection of window design, colour selection, glass type and hardware, right through to fabrication and installation.

Angela enjoys meeting new customers and advising them of the best window solutions for their homes. Customers can view window and door samples on display at the showroom plus brochures to help with choosing the finer details, so they can feel confident in their purchase.

Beautifully comfortableEvery product in every range is manufactured specifically for New Zealand’s environment. They offer a full range of window and door options, including sliding and stacking designs that maximise your living space, and awning and casement windows that are practical and easy to use. Gareth and Angela work with each customer to ensure the best solution for their home.

Flexible optionsWhether the project is an architecturally-designed home, a comfortable family dwelling, or a rebuild, the flexible Architectural series delivers a consistent look throughout, regardless of the size of the windows and doors. The range is extensive, with options extending from flat, contemporary styles to substantial ‘boxy’ alternatives for stand-out features.

Focus | Jerram Tocker Barron Architects

They design beautiful contemporary buildings of all sizes and scales across a broad range of project types, including residential, commercial, educational, civic and public. Interior and urban design, as well as master planning, feature in their areas of expertise. Indeed, the Auckland suburb of Hobsonville owes its Structure Plan to this practice’s knowledge and experience.

Originally founded in Nelson by David Jerram and specialising in residential designs, the practice now operates across New Zealand from offices in Nelson, Christchurch, Auckland and Wellington. Its principals, David Jerram, John Tocker, Marc Barron, Simon Hall and Michael Dillon, have varied experience in both New Zealand and overseas, particularly in the UK.

Marc Barron brought with him from Britain in 2004 the Royal Institute of British Architects’ Stirling Prize, considered to be the most prestigious architecture award in the United Kingdom. It is awarded to “the architect/s of the building which has made the greatest contribution to British architecture in the past year”.

Marc’s arrival into the practice helped give it further impetus for expanding into more commercial and civic projects. One significant project in Nelson benefiting from Marc’s skill is the redevelopment of the Suter Gallery, New Zealand’s third oldest art museum. The project combines the sympathetic restoration of the heritage section of the gallery while integrating with that a completely new gallery space.

Jerram Tocker Barron Architects have had a presence in Christchurch since 2010 as lead consultants on the rebuild design of nearly 20 properties in the city’s hill suburbs.

Michael Dillon has recently been appointed to lead the Christchurch office and he is excited to be able to offer the firm’s expertise and capacity to continue the rebuild of the commercial and public aspects of the city.

Soon to start construction in Shirley is a new 100 unit retirement complex and associated facilities to be known as Aria The Palms. Another complex is planned for Merivale so Christchurch will soon be seeing much more of Jerram Tocker Barron Architecture’s spectacular and innovative designs.

Designs for life Green thumbs

A name that conveys substance, Jerram Tocker Barron Architects have been demonstrating their strength, versatility and award-winning talent for more than 25 years.

Property & Construction | Urban Evolution

For those who lack a green thumb, there are professionals who can turn your neglected patch of grass or bare land into a thriving Garden of Eden, with a Kiwi touch.

The team of garden artists at Urban Evolution Ltd are no strangers to the landscaping scene. Based in Christchurch, the business has worked all around Canterbury and the West Coast to complete a wide range of jobs.

Founded in 1996 Urban Evolution has progressed to implement landscape architectural plans and creating original designs. Equipped with its very own nursery, the team can create a spectacular garden plush with plants, shrubs and trees to transform your garden space, as well as enhance the appearance of your home.

One of its current and exciting projects the business is proud to be involved with is the Brooklands Playcentre, a community services project which saw the playcentre move out of its red zoned property and relocated to Spencerville.

“As the community was all red zoned the play centre lost 70 percent enrolments,” Flora Johnson, project manager of Urban Evolution Ltd says.

The Canterbury Playcentre Association does not own the land and was waiting for insurance to come through, if any. However, Urban Evolution managed to obtain a lease, resource and building consent, and lifted the spirits of the community by breathing life into the project through building and landscape.

Excavation work began in January. The building was moved on to the back of a huge trailer and transported 4km to Spencerville by New Zealand building removals. Urban Evolution established a new storage shed, deck and roof line, and the all important outdoor plant landscaping.

“This was not our usual job, but the project management of this community venture was dear to our hearts and we wanted to give back.”

Hard landscaping was carried out by four staff with the help of different services and companies who have contributed to the project.

The landscaping is very different compared to the old site as the view overlooks a big park to the beach and beyond.

There are specific zones set out for the new site; the old deck was transformed into a walkway allowing different levels for the site, a bike track with big boulders in the two middle gardens create interest, while a raised wooden walkway winds to the side.

A lawn area envelops the sandpit with a wooden seated area and gardens so that parents can be comfortable while watching children. There is a soft fall zone for the swing set.

Fruit trees will become a permanent part of the landscape including natives donated from nurseries and a few shrubs saved from the old site. Pebbles were collected from the West Coast and the children and co-ordinators stencilled some of them to place into the concrete patio.

This design was made with the kids in mind, but the members also influenced the design, asking for a fun, creative and challenging zone.

The playcentre is now a fun and exciting place the whole community can enjoy for years to come. Flora says that the company is still working on residential landscaping, but have learnt so much from the project.

“It’s very interesting to see what else we can tackle.”

Property & Construction | Watts & Hughes Construction

Watts & Hughes Construction is continuing in its efforts to rebuild Christchurch and is currently completing a large $17 million commercial project on Moorhouse Avenue.

Opus House will feature a double lift and a fully sprinkler fire protection system. Watts & Hughes began the project in May last year, with all works due for completion by the end of July.

“It’s been a challenging and interesting project,” Paul says. “The consultants are Opus International, who are moving into the building.”

Watts & Hughes has a site manager for the project, with most trades subcontracted by the company. Chapman Engineering has done the structural steel work, Texco Group did the piling, and Nelson Stud Welders did the tray deck. Other companies involved include Beattie Group, All About Plumbing and Triangle Fire Protection.

Watts & Hughes rebuilding Christchurch Watts & Hughes has been operating in Christchurch for four years and has repaired and rebuilt hundreds of homes in that time, as well as constructing and repairing many significant commercial buildings within the city.

The 30 year-old company was established in Auckland in 1984 and Tauranga in 2004 and today has operations in Auckland, Bay of Plenty, Gisborne, Wellington and Christchurch.

Watts &Hughes has completed a number of other large commercial project in Christchurch recently, including Fresh Choice Barrington, Rolleston Police Station and Countdown Ferrymead.

A large part of the company’s success can be attributed to its strong team culture, its dedication to continual training and the fact that many of the senior people in the company started as juniors and have steadily moved their way up the ranks.

A major player in our rebuild

The project involves the construction of a 9500sqm building for SSF One Limited, called Opus House, which is a five-level office block.

Watts & Hughes project manager Paul Murphy says the building required concrete piles of 900mm diameter to be inserted 28m into the ground due to poor ground conditions.

“On top of the piles is 900x700mm concrete foundations and then the steel structure with tray deck and concrete floors,” he says. “The building will have a glazed exterior façade with Alucobond panelling. There is no tilt-slab concrete in the building. The seismic bracing system is a viscous damper by Taylor Devices in the US. It’s a typical project in Christchurch at the moment with the steel structure and traydeck floors, but it has a different bracing system.”

Watts & Hughes is a highly regarded employer and its exceptional staff retention is testimony to that.

A huge emphasis is put on quality right across the Watts & Hughes company, which recognises that providing quality construction is a major part of every successful project.

Well aware the no organisations stands alone, Watts & Hughes thanks all those it has working relationships with, including those on

Property & Construction | Brymac Tiles & Tiling

Adding colour, character and texture to any surfaceWhat do multi-hued mosaics, large format hardwoods, brick feature walls, geometric shapes and coloured splashbacks all have in common?

They represent some of the latest tiles and tiling trends being showcased at the recently repaired Brymac Tiles store at 42 Durham Street, Sydenham.

“Colours, shapes and textures add interest to a space and we’re seeing modern takes on some of the more traditional designs coming through,” Brymac Tiles managing director James Thomson says.

“Shapes like octagons, hexagons and rhombus add a twist to the more traditional rectangles and squares. Further we are seeing increased demand in large format and timber look tiles.”

1.7m long timber look ceramic tiles feature in James’ own family home and, with three children under five, they offer the natural look of wood, with the easy maintenance that comes with tiles.

They’re opening up a wider range of design possibilities, particularly in wet areas such as showers, where traditionally a wood look wasn’t possible.

“Large format tiles are extremely popular right now, with popular sizes 600 x 600, 800 x 800 right up to three metres in length,” James says.

“There are new designs and sizes that simply weren’t in the market even as little as three months ago.”

James Thomson believes the New Zealand tile market used to be five years behind Europe’s trends.

“We’re now on par,” James says, crediting the change with the inspiration of shows like ‘The Block’, ‘Our Home’ and the 24/7 availability of information via social media and the internet.

Brymac Tiles continues to make local access to the hottest tile trends hitting Europe easier than ever before. James gets to travel overseas regularly to keep up to date, but also enjoys frequent visits from factory sales representatives to ensure no gaps are missed.

This ensures Brymac Tiles regularly keeps up with all the latest tiles, tiling trends and tiling technology from manufacturers and ensures their selection represents the latest and most technically advanced products available.

The striking showroom, which re-opened in January after six months of earthquake repairs, represents just a portion of the Brymac Tiles business. A specialised trade depot offers product to tilers, builders and DIYers – everything from waterproofing, adhesives and grouts, to trims, cutters and tools.

A secondary appointment only showroom is available for architects, designers, wholesale

clients (other tile shop customers) to see expanded selections of indent items.

Brymac Tiles is also active in the installation of tiles. Whether it’s a small, medium or large commercial or residential project, Brymac has the team available to assist.

Brymac boasts an experienced sales team and a stylish, comfortable and friendly environment

with significant offsite stockholding nearby. Brymac offers a half–full day turnaround for dispatching its own stock, 2-3 days for out of town orders.

A parting piece of advice from James: “It’s important to recognise modern tiling designs as an overall concept, subtle to large variations are now possible per individual tile - so choose the look, not the individual tile piece”.

Professional partnerships For more than 30 years, Brymac Tiles and Tiling has received significant support from many local suppliers.

Whyte Construction carried out the earthquake repairs on the Wordsworth Street showroom, stripping out and replacing the concrete flooring. “Scott Fairburn from Whyte Construction has been great to deal with,” James says.

Visa Global Logistics provides the tiling firm’s international freight forwarding services, handling overseas shipments from the factory, through customs clearance, devanning and also look after the offsite logistics and daily stock runs from the offsite storage facility to the store.

Mapei New Zealand is one of Brymac’s two biggest consumable suppliers, Mapei provide adhesives, primers, silicones, waterproofing and decoupling mats.

“They have a Christchurch based consultant available for advice and specifications on projects, which is extremely helpful,” James says.

Property & Construction | Brymac Tiles & Tiling

“The Wigram Airforce Museum is a good example of Brymac Tiles supplying and laying tiles, partnered with Mapei in using a system specially designed for purpose.”

Commercial Signs is Brymac’s commercial signwriter and the firm has dealt with Tony for years. “He provided the original signwriting for the building and has provided his services again since our repairs.”

Brymac purchases its onsite vehicles from a Sydenham based dealership Wheeler Motors and James says the service is fantastic.

Property & Construction | Lilly Builders

From broken chimneys to delicate heritage moulded cornices, from cracked gib board to re-levelling foundations, from classic villas to modern homes, Lilly Builders can fix it all. They do build houses - and high quality architecturally designed ones at that - but for the past four years Lilly Builders has been specialising in earthquake repairs.

“Not many other firms seem to want to concentrate on repairs”, say owners of Lilly Builders, Brett and Paula Lilly, “but for us helping people to stay in their own much loved property, rather than in a brand-new place, is immensely satisfying.”

The owner of a character property in St Albans can testify to that. Significant repairs on her house taking some four months to complete have left her totally delighted with the result. Chimneys have had to be removed, walls rebuilt, re-gibbed, plastered and painted and classic sculptured coving and archways sympathetically repaired.

Her more than 100 year old home has emerged better than ever. “It’s a gift we can give home owners,” say Brett and Paula “and because we fully manage the repair from start to finish, we reduce homeowners’ stress considerably. All they have to do is pack up and move out and then move back in when we have finished. We can even provide advice on paint colours and on products through our specialist staff.”

Lilly Builders’ supervisors oversee the quality of every project using a comprehensive checklist of tasks and technical requirements to ensure that

Master craftsmen

all aspects of the repair are carried out to the highest standard and according to the building industry’s best practice.

“Doing it right the first time is of paramount importance to us and to our workers. Our name and our reputation are on the line.”

Home owners have the option to select Lilly Builders as their preferred contactor for repair work either under the Fletchers’ EQR programme or through their insurance company. Lilly Builders will be pleased to provide an obligation-free quotation.

Safeguarding people, facilities and other valuable assets is at the heart of the Talbot Security Group’s work. They collaborate with the Ashburton District Council in enforcing the town’s liquor ban with patrols out on the streets every evening; they protect hundreds of local businesses around Mid Canterbury and they ensure home owners’ peace of mind through the installation of alarms and then monitoring these and responding to any issues. After all, according to Dean - what more in today’s world has any form of greater value that that of your family and home?

Now that business offers a truly comprehensive security service. Indeed Talbot Security Group’s motto is “Total Peace of Mind” Security Solutions.

Dean is a man with ideas-always willing to try something different. It is that ability to see gaps in the market that has led to the growth of a firm that delivers innovative security solutions that assist in reducing crime, yet are cost-effective.

For Dean and his team, keeping the community and his clients safe and secure is the priority. He is passionate about what he does and about the community he and his team care for. Focus | Christchurch Football Academy

From Russia with loveThe ambitious dream to create world-class sporting facilities on the edge of Christchurch is taking shape at a rapid pace.It takes passion, a driving vision, a truck load of determination and a whole lot of Russian tenacity to make anything happen. But making things happen is exactly what Christchurch-based Russian businessman Slava Meyn has done.

From a bare 20-hectare site in Yaldhurst, the beginnings of his vision for the Christchurch Sports Centre and International Sports Academy is taking shape. The first part of this ultra-modern, youth focused, multi-sports hub is creating two full sized playing fields for the Christchurch Football Academy (CFA).

The Academy is a charitable organisation passionate about raising the profile of football (soccer in Kiwi speak) among our region’s youth and with the new facilities, it will enable children to participate in football for all year round.

The first half of stage one of the ambitious project is now a reality as two full-sized synthetic turf fields, complete with stands, flood lighting and road infrastructure, are about to open, providing a superior, all-weather playing surface. It is the most technologically advanced artificial grass playing surface installed in New Zealand and will be FIFA two stars certified.

By early 2016, the accompanying clubrooms are expected to open. Beyond this, Slava, an astute and accomplished businessman, is looking for direct investment, partnerships, joint ventures, sponsors and associations that will join the team to develop other facilities on site. “We have placed the foundations and started to create a world-class facility, our desire now is to deliver exactly what people in Christchurch want and need,” Slava comments.

While the anchor tenant of the Sports Centre is the CFA, the concept is to see many sports codes, businesses and organisations utilise the space - how that looks is dependent on who comes forward to play a role in the development. To date interest is high and negotiations are underway with numerous parties who are related to, or have an interest in, youth or the sports industry.

Slava’s long-term vision sees the Sports Centre being home to an indoor swimming pool, 7500

square metre indoor multisport stadium, with eight indoor courts, a gymnastics centre and a variety of other sports fields. He would like to see a cafe, offices, preschool and/or charter school on site, along with a host of complementary businesses and services. The private/public partnerships that are anticipated are a reasonably new concept for New Zealand, but Slava has studied numerous international facilities operating under this model, which are highly successful.

“I want this to be an all-in-one facility, where Mum or Dad can drop all their children, with each heading off to play their various sports.” Be it football, rugby, basketball, swimming, softball, triathlon or gymnastics, he wants parents to have the option of staying and making use of the gym, getting a massage, going to the café or sitting in the lounge - logging into the wifi and working.

“I just want to see kids get passionate about sport and I can help that happen.”

Canterbury businesses and clubs invited to become part of this field of dreams

Stage one – two full-sized artificial pitches, roading, lighting and clubrooms under development – is just the beginning of Slava’s dream of creating an international sports facility for the youth of Christchurch, and New Zealand. He is now actively seeking joint venture partners, possibly the Christchurch City Council, government agencies and Canterbury sports and educational organisations, to help fund the facility going forward.

The next defined stage of the development will include another pitch, this time a sand-based natural turf playing field, a grandstand, four synthetic mini-pitches, and a clubhouse with six changing rooms, café and office area.

A preliminary design has been prepared for further developments including a gymnastics facility of up to 5,000 square metres, a six or eight-lane, 50 metre swimming pool, complete with seating for 800-odd spectators.

The proposed third stage includes a $7m aquatic complex, plus fields for a variety of codes. He would like to see an eight lane, 50 metre, international standard pool for swimmers to train, complete with seating for some 800 spectators.

He has had expressions of interest from Canterbury water polo officials.

Another stage features an indoor multi-sports centre with numerous courts for use across various sporting codes. Add in a gym studio, yoga and Pilates studio and sports rehabilitation facilities, a cafe and meeting rooms, and you start to see the scale of Slava’s dream. “All dreams start with an idea, and I know this can all happen.”

He is now encouraging business, potential sponsors or clubs that might want to hire, sponsor or develop facilities to get in touch. He envisages having spaces corporate groups can hire and wants to enter into sponsorship discussions with businesses who want to support and encourage sport in the community.

“While the Sports Centre will have a major focus on encouraging young people to be actively involved in sport, there will be dedicated facilities for adult users. For example, it is envisioned a series of mini pitches with an attached social area, BBQs, access to a cafe/bar and change rooms will be dedicated to adult groups wanting to play social sport - be it clubs or corporate competitions.

“We need a cafe operator to come in, and there will be spaces for other services in and around sport - so come talk to us,” he urges. “We want to work with anyone who has a business based around kids or sport.

Focus | Christchurch Football Academy

For the love of footballSlava’s motivation for the project is his love of football. And he’s not alone - his entire family is passionate about sports. The Meyn family relocated to Christchurch in 2009 and both he and his wife are active in sports, as are his three children.

“When I arrived here six years ago, it was a surprise for me that kids didn’t play football all year round.”

Slava set about establishing the Academy, with the plans for the Sports Centre hot on its heels. He recruited former Canterbury United assistant coach, Bulgarian Tsetso Ivanov, as coaching director. Together they have grown a passion to get kids playing football into a reality that will soon have its home on one of the best training centers in New Zealand.

They want to encourage more kids into football and with New Zealand’s hosting rights to the FIFA Under 20 World Cup next month, they believe this will help to raise the profile of the sport.

Internationally, football has some major idols: Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo and Neymar

Jr. Part of his vision for the Academy is to ignite a fire in young New Zealanders and train international standard footballers. “Kids want something to look up to, so let’s start building a future generation of football superstars right here in Christchurch,” Tsetso says.

Today he supports Barcelona and Zenit Petersburg, whose star player Viktor Fayzulin hails from Slava’s home town of Nakhodka, near Vladivostok.

International qualifications benefiting Canterbury childrenTsetso, an internationally certificated and qualified coach, has dedicated his career (and life) to football. He left a major European university with a double major in PE coaching and sports culture (football) and had already made the decision that he wanted to work with young people coaching and developing world-class football players.

“The new football centre and Christchurch Football Academy has enormous potential. The Academy will cater for players aged four to 18, with the ultimate aim of training elite players capable of going on to professional careers.”

Tsetso stresses the Academy is not about exclusivity but total inclusiveness. “We are here to cater to all recreational players keen to improve their skills through quality training. We are building world-class professional pitches and facilities but there is no limitation to who can join us.”

For the last season CFA has been operating five and seven-aside tournaments for children from the age of four years upwards. Part of the Academy’s culture that is already reaping rewards is children arriving half an hour before formal coaching begins - this time spent in the changing rooms is about building a bond, getting to know your team mates and then getting focused, so by the time the kids hit the field, they are ready to focus and concentrate on learning.

“We are delivering the total playing experience and in this first half hour our coaches are setting expectations so the kids know what is going to happen next. It’s about preparing them for the game in every way and instilling discipline.”

Part of the process is educating parents on how they can encourage their child off the field and how to avoid the typical “Kiwi sideline coach” syndrome. “As professional coaches we need to have the children’s 100 percent attention. It is only when we have it that we can give them the very best coaching and encouragement.”

Non- competition The academy could work within the New Zealand football structure.

There have been discussions with Mainland Football and many other organisations about the potential for joint ventures. “I don’t want the Academy to be in competition with other football clubs, we want to work with them. Our football centre will be open for everyone who wants to play football.”

The opening of the two full sized synthetic turf fields in the next month means playing football all year round in Christchurch will be a reality. Add in the sophisticated lighting and the playing fields become a multi-use space that can be used day and night, 365 days of the year.

“You build a great player the same way you build a house. The foundations are the technique. The first floor is the physical conditioning. Next is the tactical side of the game. And last is the player’s desire. For a player to be great they must have talent, intelligence, and motivation. If one of those three is missing, there is no great career.”

Meet the key playersThe Christchurch Sports Centre and International Sports Academy

Slava Meyn - director

The successful, Christchurch based businessman moved to New Zealand in 2009 and from here the Russian philanthropist maintains his position as a major shareholder in Ratimir, one of the largest meat processors in Russia’s far-east region. As a sporting family, the Meyn’s were frustrated at the lack of football facilities in Christchurch, therefore Slava established the Christchurch Football Academy.

Contributing to the rebuild of Christchurch is important to Slava and this acts as the motivation to start work on multi-million dollar state-of-the-art sporting facility in Yaldhurst. It’s designed to introduce to New Zealand the best world practices and technologies for high quality training and the playing of sport in a safe and inspired environment. It’s his passion for football and dedication to seeing young people participating in sport that fuels his drive to invest in and establish this purpose built sporting facility.

Christchurch Football AcademyTsetso Ivanov - coaching director

As a coach who has obtained a ‘A’ class UEFA licence (Union of European Football Associations), Tsetso is internationally trained and qualified to the highest standards. His passion is coaching children and nurturing talent. He moved to New Zealand in 2006 and has worked in various football coaching positions since. He continues to study under top conditioning expert Raymond Verheijen, and is dedicated to making world class coaching available to Kiwi kids. As well as developing a football curriculum for use in New Zealand schools

and overseeing all coaching activity with the CFA, he is also active on the football pitch, coaching children across all grades.

Kathryn Mason

Teaching is in her blood. Kathryn holds a Bachelor of Teaching and Learning and works in a Christchurch intermediate school. She has always been an avid football player and currently plays competitively in the Mainland Women’s Premier League. She is also the assistant coach with the Universities Women’s Premier League Team. She recently completed the Youth Level 3 coaching qualification with New Zealand Football. Kat coaches across all grades, including the 11th Grade White Team.

Alongside Slava Meyn, a number of high-profile professionals and business people are on the charitable trust board for the Christchurch Football Academy:

Mike Killick is the managing director of Deep South Ice Cream, one of New Zealand’s leading manufacturers and exporters of premium ice cream. Mike has a long involvement in New Zealand football as a player, coach and governor of the game in his role as the deputy-chair of Mainland Football.

David Rycroft is managing director of Assist Group Ltd and is currently a board member of the Canterbury Employers Chamber of Commerce.

Ricardo Felitti

Football and children are his passion. Ricardo is a qualified pre-school teacher and is honoured to be coaching the youngest children at the Academy. He moved to New Zealand 13 years ago and has played as much football as he possibly could. Growing up in Uruguay, Ricardo played every day. Recently, Ricardo completed the Youth Level 3 coaching qualification with New Zealand Football. His goals are to keep growing as a coach and to keep developing better football players. Ricardo coaches children across all grades, including 11th Grade Gold Team.

Scott Whitaker is a partner at law firm Duncan Cotterill, specialising in commercial and agribusiness issues. Scott is also a trustee of the CPIT Foundation.

Yuriy Bazhak is an accountant working for Kendons - a proactive chartered accountancy firm. Yuriy has two young sons who love playing football.

Peter Richardson is one of the partners of Linwood Law and has been practicing as a property and commercial lawyer for 27 years. He has also spent two years in an executive role with a management and development company and has coached various sports teams and athletes.

Growing talent in Canterbury While the Christchurch Football Academy is all-inclusive and aims to get anyone interested playing football, Tsetso says it’s also about nurturing talent to ultimately move players into professional leagues.

“What we need to do is not only find the talent, but grow it.

“The two synthetic fields and an 11-month playing season are the first steps. I don’t believe this facility is only going to make the players. You also need great coaches and well-structured programmes.” Both of which the Academy are delivering.

Establishing football curriculums, not just for use within the Academy, but also across schools is well underway. A Memorandum of Understanding has already been signed with Rangi Ruru Girls' School and Christ's College for the Academy to develop a programme that will become part of the schools' curriculum for the teaching of football. It is anticipated this will soon be rolled out to more schools.

“We are taking a holistic approach to football as we want to see the game grow here.” In the Mainland Football Club catchment area, the two organisations are working together with the schools to promote the game.

Taking football into schoolsFor nearly a year, the Academy has been taking the game into schools - a move that has proved exceptionally popular. While it has seen some quality coaching taken directly to the players, it is also adding an element of fun with it inflatable football pitch.

More than 5,000 primary children have interacted with the Academy and while this is in part a promotion, it’s also about raising enjoyment of the game in general – but mostly it’s about spotting talent. And they have, in

particular, Tsetso mentions an 11-year-old girl who he believes will one day play for New Zealand. The Academy is working with her parents to nurture this talent.

Football is now the number one team sport played by Kiwi kids. In 2012, Sport New Zealand announced that football had overtaken rugby as the sport of choice. Kicking the round ball was the most popular team sport, eclipsing rugby across all age groups and both genders.

Part of developing a more inclusive and available playing opportunity, Slava says the Academy will make its facilities accessible to footballers from all clubs around the region.

“We want to hold regular tournaments at the site for a variety of different age groups.” Attracting club teams from other countries to Christchurch was another goal.

“We also want our fields to be used by other sports and clubs and we want to foster these relationships and see this whole facility being used all the time by as many codes as possible.

The very best playing field in New ZealandConstruction is nearly finished on the two full-sized synthetic turf fields, for the winter season.

Slava spent considerable time and resources researching the types of pitches used internationally. He subsequently contracted Quad4 Ltd, the national distributor for FieldTurf in New Zealand, to do the work. The globally patented, FieldTurf system is used on top sports fields the world over - from football to baseball.

National sales director Shane Page says FieldTurf fields have hosted The Super Bowl, BCS National Championship Games, World Cup matches, the World Series, and the World Baseball Classic.

Slava wanted a field that can be played on year round - FieldTurf is delivering that. “This surface will eliminate ground closures and players will no longer be running around on sodden winter pitches.

“Once it opens, it can never be closed, except for snow,” Shane adds.

“Christchurch is exceptionally lucky to be getting this facility. It’s a superior playing surface and the football fraternity will be astounded at its performance and its aesthetic appeal. It will be the best playing field in New Zealand. While the Ole Academy in Wellington has very similar turf, it does not feature the cork layer of the Christchurch field.

The cork top layer keeps the surface temperature cool. “The cork takes the heat and distributes it, helping to keep the field cooler than other traditional systems on the market.

“Our company has worked closely with athletes, former players, coaches, trainers and doctors, and development included years of trials, tests, samples, equipment innovations and advanced formulas – all with the goal of developing an artificial turf system that combines the performance properties of natural grass with the benefits of a synthetic solution,” Shane adds.

“The difference is players will feel safe. The field will feel comfortable and they’ll have less soft tissue injuries because of it.”

FirldTurf’s focus on safety has led to numerous injury-reducing innovations and improvements. The findings of a long-term testing programme show that FieldTurf is safer than any other synthetic turf system and equal to – if not better than – natural grass in most critical areas of player safety, he adds.

In addition to significantly lowering maintenance costs, increasing playing time, and providing all-weather playability, FieldTurf’s long list of exclusive benefits put it in a class of its own.

The two full-sized playing surfaces will have line markings for four mini-sized pitches within one of the fields.

The surface system is completely controlled by FieldTurf, who manufactures every element. “We manufacture our own polymer and we extrude that to make our own yarn. By controlling the entire process we are able to deliver a superior system, with the yarn customised to the sport that will be played on the field.”

The three-layer infill system, which includes a layer of sand then sand and cryogenic rubber then the cork, provides maximum stability, less bounce and it feels superior underfoot.

Build it and they will comeSlava uses the expression “you must build the church before they come to pray” when asked why he is doing this.

Christchurch is fortunate that the Meyn family chose to settle here - the facilities Slava is pouring his financial resources into will be world-class, high tech and help foster enthusiasm and participation in sport.

This sentiment was echoed by Connetics general manager of business services, John Thompson. “This is a world class facility and we are thrilled to have been involved from conception to fruition. Slava has a great vision and this facility will be a huge benefit to Canterbury.”

Connetics has designed and installed all flood lighting, facility lighting and power. The lighting is to FIFA standards and John adds that the satisfaction levels will be high for users of the pitch. “Lighting was a critical part of the Academy’s facilities and the design is fit for purpose and of a very high standard.”

While Slava and his family are committed to ensuring the success of the Sports Centre and the Academy, ultimately it’s a community project. “I want lots of people and clubs involved and helping to develop this community asset. I want to see many organisations benefiting from this space; mostly I want to see kids playing and loving sport.

He reiterates that the future success and the shape of the Sports Centre will be guided by the partnerships and investments of suitable organisations.

“The community and others involved with kids need to help guide how this will proceed and what it looks like in the future.

Focus | Printable Solutions

It’s never an easy feat standing out in a crowded marketplace, yet for local Christchurch entrepreneur Ashley Horton, the ability to stand out is only surpassed by the ability to grow and evolve to keep up with the ever-changing needs of a rapidly evolving industry.

Print perfection

The man behind local printing firm Printable Solutions was just 19 when he started the company with little more than energy and a vision. Twelve years later that vision is going nationwide.

Much like Ashley’s fresh, young approach to the conservative printing industry, he’s taken to franchising with the same energy, flipping the traditional franchise model on its head.

“We’ve developed a win-win-win scenario for Printable,” Ashley explains.

“So, rather than the traditional franchise model which is heavily in the franchisor’s favour, we have developed a winning formula for all parties – the management company, franchisee and production centres.

“We’re super-charging the business!”

In October 2014 the first Printable franchise opened in the heart of Merivale, by Keith Clark and Margot Button. Keith and Margot run a graphic design office/retail store that feeds into the main production hub of Printable.

“This is just the first of a long line of Printable Solutions franchises in our future,” Ashley says. “We’re giving the company steroids and we’ve got big plans for 30 more of these around the country, so we’re on the lookout for franchise partners.”

They’re big words, but Ashley has a habit of delivering. While his foray into the world of business started with knocking on doors wearing a suit that didn’t fit, trousers that didn’t match and carrying a briefcase full of business card samples to convince business owners to put their trust in him, the result has been phenomenal.

They did and today Printable Solutions provides fast, high quality, environmentally friendly printing with most products dispatched New Zealand wide within 48 hours. How many manufacturing companies have the courage to offer ‘on time, guaranteed, or it’s free’? Yes that would be Printable Solutions too. And the service is complemented by Ashley’s design agency Thinkroom.

Page 47: Canterbury Today Magazine Ct132

Focus | Printable Solutions

It’s one of the hardest industries in which to make a mark and one often described as declining, but Printable just keeps on growing.

While a tag line means nothing unless you’re delivering on promises, Printable Solutions takes its tag line as seriously as it takes its business. ‘Fast, reliable, quality print’ is much more than empty promises. Ashley has clearly proven himself reliable, he’s definitely fast, and the

quality is second to none. The growth curve – the key marker of a good job – is astounding.

So how does Printable Solutions maintain such a high level of service? “Outstanding staff,” Ashley states.

“Staff are so very important to a customer’s experience. You might have an important deadline and their competence makes it easy. Printing might be crucial to your production, so you need reliability and consistency. If you’re in marketing, brand control might be your highest priority so accuracy is what you’d require.

“I hire my staff based on accuracy, consistency and reliability,” he says.

Suppliers of successSince those early days of cold calling businesses, customers and suppliers have played a key role in the company’s success.

New Zealand’s leading producer of mushrooms and mushroom products, Meadow Mushrooms may be about growing produce, but the local company is playing an equally important role in growing one of Christchurch’s favourite

entrepreneurs. Despite the pressure the Printable Solutions' customer puts on the company to deliver, Ashley has never let them down.

Specialist online marketing and conversion optimisation company, Conversion Foundry, is all about the intelligence behind the web, but those analytical minds still require the services of Ashley’s team when it comes to their printing needs. And, as enterprising as he is, Ashley still needs their specialist knowledge for his website optimisation.

Local legal firm Lane Neave has a philosophy of ‘Everything is possible’ and its confidence and vision aligns perfectly with that of Ashley, who has a proven track record with the firm which has been both a supplier and customer of Printable Solutions since day one.

Konica Minolta supplies the technology at the very foundation of Printable Solutions. Yes, the printers. A supplier of digital printing equipment, Konica Minolta is also both a customer and a supplier. “They have really put their money where their mouth is,” Ashley says. “And they’ve been outstanding.”

Christchurch welding supply company Weld Worx has been meeting the needs of workshops that are small in stature, through to some of the region’s largest industrial engineers, for more than 12 years, and this also includes home and farm workshops.

Although the local firm started in the garage of owners Darryl and Victoria McCartney, with three successive moves the couple now call 29 Carlyle Street headquarters, after they purchased their large and expansive warehouse between Gasson and Colombo Streets in Sydenham, reflecting significant growth and cementing their confidence and ongoing commitment to the local market.

With a fulltime staff now totalling eight, including a sales representative based in the North Island, Weld Worx is able to offer technical support advice and process and dispatch orders promptly to all regions in a timely manner.

“I’ve been involved in the welding and engineering industry since leaving high school to commence an apprenticeship as a fitter-welder, and have witnessed monumental change in the way the industry has evolved through the years,” Darryl explains.

“Prior to establishing Weld Worx I was working for a global welding company and from there I identified gaps in the market that weren’t being

met, not to mention customer dissatisfaction with what was, and was not available.”

Weld Worx has developed a strong name through its ability to source products not easily obtainable in New Zealand, via an established network of some of the largest global manufacturers.

Now also with an in-house service and repair division, husband and wife duo Darryl and Victoria are well positioned to meet all the requirements of both the DIY, and most importantly, industrial markets, both locally and in other regions throughout the country.

Industrial welding supplies

“We have a very good relationship with a wide range of suppliers and the support we get from them gives us an edge over the competition,” Darryl says.

“With over 40 years of industry experience, we’ve got a good handle on the industry and we’re familiar with a lot of the older equipment, not to mention the latest equipment entering the market today such as CNC controlled plasma cutting systems and digital pulsed welders.”

Weld Worx is now New Zealand’s largest stockist of Cigweld products and spare parts – a brand familiar and well respected in New Zealand for many years who manufacture gas cutting equipment, MIG, TIG, Plasma machines, along with welding electrodes and filler metals to mention just a few.

The success of the Cigweld brand is evident with more than 50 multi-process units being sold to just three large companies in Christchurch. Other leading global brands such as Lincoln Electric provide specialised machines, such as engine driven welders and submerged arc welders, welding apparel and also a wide range of filler metals.

The showroom at 29 Carlyle Street has an extensive range of products to choose from, including welding equipment, plasma, safety equipment, power tools and specialist welding related items.

“Initially in 2002 when we started, we had companies approaching us when they heard we were going to go out and do this on our own. We took those opportunities and have developed long lasting and mutually beneficial relationships throughout the years,” Darryl says.

“One of the key factors in our success has been the generous support from our suppliers, and knowing we can go back to them if we have any issues has been a big advantage over the years.”

Two years ago the firm became an outlet for ownership compressed gas cylinders including Oxygen, Acetylene, Argon, Argoshield, CO2 and Nitrogen gases for welding and cutting. “This has been tremendously successful for us,” Darryl

says. “The uptake in Canterbury has been phenomenal. Gas companies have traditionally charged a cylinder rental fee. Companies and individuals can now purchase their cylinders outright and upon return can swap their empty cylinders for a full one, saving on those dreaded rental fees.”

Moving forward Weld Worx plans to increase the range further, and through a strong relationship with global manufacturers, the company is looking to strengthen its position in other areas such as CNC operated machines for plasma, laser and water jet cutting. “Having installed several CNC operated automated Plasma cutting systems already in Canterbury, we believe this is an area which needs to be developed further in New Zealand and we’re looking to assist in that process.

“Traditionally these products have been seen as high value luxury items only accessible to large steel merchants. In recent years these products

have become more affordable and as a result more workshops are in a position to install them to lessen their production times and costs.

“We plan to install a fully optioned CNC Plasma machine in our own warehouse in the coming months to provide practical demonstrations for anyone around the country who is considering installing CNC in their own workshop. To my knowledge this may be the only such dealer installation in New Zealand for that purpose.”

Due for completion shortly will be a welding booth for customer demonstrations showcasing the latest in powered fume extraction, something which is gaining strong interest in many workshops.

Although Weld Worx started from humble beginnings, by continuing to deliver solutions to customers, while exceeding their expectations in quality, service and value, the company has continued to grow and adapt.

The new Carlyle Street premise is just further recognition of the value that the local and nationwide customer base sees in their offering. “We started in 2002 operating from a double garage and a spare bedroom, growing rapidly, before it was taking up whole house,” Darryl says. “This is our third and final location. It’s large and modern, we’re really happy to be here and we’re looking forward to the future.”

Open from Monday to Friday7.30am to 5pm and Saturday from 9am to 1pm all visitors are most welcome to call by.

Focus | Romano's Food Group

Just because the Italians invented pizza doesn’t mean that pizzas made on the other side of the world lack cultural identity, taste and traditional qualities. Romano’s Food Group has made sure of that!

Italian flair and local flavour

It was in the early 1980s that Maxwell’s Pastry purchased Romano’s Pizzas and began to produce fresh pizza for the South Island. After a time it expanded to include the North Island. Maxwell’s famous brand of pastry goodies never diminished, though, and remained securely alongside Romano’s pizza range.

Like many businesses, Romano's Food Group was faced with a challenging market and the decision was made to produce a frozen range of high quality pizzas which were affordable and just as tasty as freshly made ones – and so, The Chicago Pizza Company was born.

With the release of the new range of pizzas it just goes to show that the company’s continued action to improve all aspects of operations means that its best quality products were just that – at its best.

Maxwell’s Pastry changed its name to Romano’s Food Group Limited in 2011 to show its desire to not only be a great producer of pizza, but a company which makes great food. And in November 2014 the business moved from Ferry Road to Hillsborough

The company is privately owned and run by the same family which founded the business in 1975 and believe it is this tradition and commitment to the local community and New Zealand as a whole which makes it successful.

Oven tipsSet the dial on your oven to the setting that produces the most bottom heat (usually the bake setting), as this is the secret to a crispy base and replicates that of a true pizza oven.

You can cook your pizza in the oven on a pre-heated pizza stone, especially if your oven is a modern one with no bottom element.

We choose to place the pizza directly onto the bottom oven rack. Try it!

Conventional oven cooking instructions for thin & crispy base

Select bottom element mode on your oven, usually bake mode but avoid fan bake if possible. Set to 200c and preheat oven (the hotter the better). Slide the pizza low into the oven either onto a preheated tray, pizza stone or

directly onto the rack. Bake till desired texture is achieved, usually around 8-10 minutes.

BBQ cooking instructions for thin & crispy base

Preheat hooded BBQ to 230c then turn burners onto low to maintain temperature. Place topped pizza directly on rack, close hood and bake for 6-7 minutes, rotating regularly for even baking, or alternatively place on pre-heated pizza stone directly on BBQ.

A tradition celebrated both in its food and in the hearts of the family running the business, taste and quality is at the centre of this Christchurch business which has been renowned for its glorious pastry and range of fresh and frozen pizzas for more than 40 years.

The company is one of the top manufacturers of fresh and frozen pizzas, as well as sensational golden pastry products, making it the perfect choice for special events or occasions. Whether it’s a staff do or family event, Romano’s will make the pizza magic happen.

The delicious range of Romano’s products include extra thin flatbread with garlic, mozzarella and sea salt, Italian pizza bases with honey and olive oil, crispy pizza bases with tomato and herb, extra thin pizza bases stone bake style, as well as all of the taste and quality in its frozen pizzas including BBQ meatlovers, Giant Slabs, Minis and Deli Fresh pizzas – all available from leading supermarkets.

The company has also released a new range of extra thin pizzas under the Chicago Pizza brand, including butter chicken, Moroccan lamb and hickory smokehouse trio.

If we delve into Romano's Food Group’s archive, we find that the business began way back in 1975 in Christchurch as a maker of fine pastry under the name of Maxwell’s Pastry.

The Christchurch RSA is now back in its rightful central city home and better than ever. It is now fully re-opened in its brand new building and excited to welcome RSA members and the general public back to its home in the heart of the city, at 74 Armagh Street, where it is providing a full range of services including bar and restaurant facilities.

The $6.5 million Warren & Mahoney-designed RSA building replaces the 1920s-era RSA which was severely damaged in the February 2011 earthquake and subsequently demolished.

The modern building was formally opened on March 27 by the Governor General, Sir Jerry Mateparae. It also held a commemorative service for the Gallipoli Landings on ANZAC Day.

“We are really excited about having returned to our own home. The new building is wonderful and a valuable asset for our rebuilt and vibrant new city,” says Christchurch RSA president Pete Dawson.

Local RSA has a new home

The association’s new dining facility, Trenches Restaurant and Bar, is open seven days a week for breakfast, lunch and dinner on the ground floor of the building. The restaurant offers a social, friendly environment and serves up a wide variety of extremely delicious, high quality food. Members’ discounts apply on all menu items and bar products.

If you are interested in becoming apart of the largest club in the country, with more than 105,000 members nationwide and reaping the rewards of discounted food and drink at its modern new facility, then get in contact.

The Christchurch RSA will celebrate its own centenary in December later this year.

Education | Rolleston Christian School

Rolleston’s newest school looks to the future The Rolleston community now has another choice in education for its children, following the opening of the brand new Rolleston Christian School. The school opened its doors to its first intake of students in February and is being well received by the children and their parents.

Christian Schools Trust chief executive Mark Larson, who is also the chairman of the school’s establishment board of trustees, is duly excited about the future of the new school.

Rolleston Christian School is a state-integrated school with a special character for children in years one to six. The land and buildings at 571 Springston-Rolleston Road are privately owned by the trust, while the Ministry of Education funds the running of the school.

Construction of the new school started last June and was completed in February. “We have 50 children at the moment, with room for a maximum roll of 300,” Mark says. “We’re built for 150 students in stage one and then we’ll build stage two, which is for the next 150. It depends on how the roll grows, but it’s probably 3-5 years away.”

The long term plans for the school are to cater to children up to year 10, which would involve the construction of a third stage. However, Mark says this could be 10-15 years away. “We believe 5-15 percent of the population could be interested in sending their kids to a Christian school. We did the numbers out in Rolleston 5-10 years ago when the Ministry said the town was going to grow really fast. Then the earthquakes have added to that,” Mark says.

“We had hoped to be nearer to 100 students by now. We’re growing from the bottom up so we’re getting a lot of interest from parents of five year olds.”

Smooth construction processThe Christian Schools Trust and establishment board of trustees put a large amount of thought into the design of the school and what teaching and learning styles they wanted to achieve.

“We have open spaces and collaborative teaching styles, as well as IT and digital learning,” Mark says.

The Rolleston Christian School has six classrooms that can be kept separate or opened up for collaborative teaching. Mark says everyone involved in the school is extremely pleased with the design and construction of the new school.

The school is led by principal Liz Horn, with all teachers required to be Christians.

Happy pupils at the brand new Rolleston Christian School.

Food Distribution | Service Foods

The key to longevity in business, as in life, is the ability to move with the times, to adapt to meet changing needs and adopting an evolutionary process as a means to stay at the top of your game.

While Service Foods is today one of New Zealand’s largest privately owned and operated food service distribution businesses, it started from humble beginnings and it’s been the conscious decision to move with the times which has seen the company go from strength to strength.

The extent to which Service Foods has been working to expand its reach across New Zealand from its two locations, in Auckland and Christchurch, is evident in three company milestones occurring this year.

While 2015 marks 35 years of general operations in the industry and 21 years of operation under the Service Foods Ltd banner, it also represents five years of sustained and substantial growth within the Auckland market.

Today Service Foods supplies a wide range of customers, including hotels, quick service restaurants (QSRs), restaurants, cafés and manufacturers. “We started in fresh produce and have evolved to form the business as it stands today,” director Aneil Balar explains.

“The business is based around the supply of foods to hospitality, airlines – essentially anyone who cooks or creates food we have the capability to supply them.”

The firm’s product range includes dry, frozen, chilled, fresh seafood, imported foods, with fresh produce and the latest addition to the range is butchery.

Aneil says Service Foods’ proactive and competitive operation has ensured its success will be ongoing, with the company covering Auckland, the Waikato and Canterbury by truck and other regions by freight.

“Our stability and the energy within our team have enabled us to cement our position in the market and propel us forward. We have grown from five staff to 260 now, with the key growth concentrated in the last 10 years.”

Being successful in business is all about communication and, with this, establishing and maintaining working relationships with both suppliers and clients alike. “Our strong relationships with our suppliers and clients has played an extremely important role in our success,” he says.

So Service Foods would like to thank all its clients, suppliers and partners. With this in mind, it thanks those companies who have supported the company on these pages: Porkcorp New Zealand and Simply Syrups.

Delivered fresh every dayThe construction of the new Rolleston Christian School was a huge success for Signal Management Group, which acted as project and construction manager. Signal Management Group does a lot of work within the education sector and has considerable experience building schools.

Director and project manager, Stuart Anderson says Signal managed the master planning, design and construction of the new integrated Christian school in Rolleston. It carried out an initial site master planning process, which required the engagement and management of a range of design and specialist technical consultants. It involved the resolution of a range of land acquisition, infrastructure capacity, operational and traffic/noise/landscape design issues associated with the development of the green-fields site.

The construction of stage 1 involved the provision of classroom, administrative and infrastructure and amenity facilities for 150 year 1-6 students. It required innovative, fast-track design and construction strategies.

A key element of the school’s special character is reflected in the design of the classroom blocks, which embrace an open-learning

environment. “It was a nice project on a green-fields site, but the big challenge was the tight timeframe,” says Stuart.

“Another challenge was that there wasn’t a great deal of infrastructure to start with; we did the electricity, water, drainage, car parking and administrative building. Our strategy was to have a lot of the separate resources allocated to those individual areas.”
