SCHOOL UNIFORM 2016

Canterbury Girls is a proud uniform wearing school. This is in accordance with Department of Education and Communities policy and the wishes of the whole school community – students (represented by Student Representative Council and Prefects), parents and families (represented by the P&C), and staff. Wearing school uniform presents a positive public image to the community of our school. School uniform also fosters a safer school environment by enabling students to be easily identified. All students are expected to wear full school uniform every day. SAFETY

school Uniform 2016We have been through a Uniform review which involved surveys of all students, staff and parents. As well, a combined committee of parent, student and staff representatives have looked at all survey results and made some small modifications to the Uniform Code for 2016 in co-operation with Lowes, our uniform provider.

The main changes include:l Longer waisted navy trousers for all students, as the

old style sold was not comfortable for all studentsl Revised material and design for the senior skirtl New material in the sports shorts for comfort

l A new sports shirt which will come on line for sale mid 2016l Addition of a navy polo jumper with logo for winterl Addition of a navy warm jacket for winterl Removal of the optional grey or black cardigans.

This had resulted in a myriad of styles and we have returned to NAVY for all jumpers.

A copy of the new Uniform code follows, as well as the 2016 price list from LOWES below.

Families are reminded that leggings are only to be worn under skirts for warmth or under shorts for warmth in winter. If students have dance or drama they should get changed at school and not wear blacks to and from school. Likewise with PE practical classes, students should bring gear to school and change.

IDeAtION 2015Four Year 9 SRC reps (Ella, Stella, Lucy and Aimee) attended IDEATION 2015 at the Powerhouse Museum, where the focus was on celebrating and defining Cultural Diversity. Workshops covered Religion, What makes an Australian Australian!, and Stereotyping. These sessions had expert lecturers and were also attended by journalists, providing broad ranging perspectives. The day was attended by students from Government, Catholic and Private schools across Sydney. By raising awareness of culture and identifying wrongful stereotyping we can bring about change in our own school communities.

Aboriginal education ProgramsJessie Simon-Fitzpatrick and Sharnee Dingwall gave outstanding vocal performances at the Deadly Kids Doing Well Awards at UTS in October. Both Jessie and Sharnee are getting a reputation as outstanding performers within the Sydney school community, and deserve every success. At this Ceremony, Marie Ikonomou was recognised for her outstanding efforts as a member of the state Aboriginal Dance Company. Well done to Marie!

A reminder to parents that Mrs McLelland continues to support girls as Coordinator of the Aboriginal Student Support program, on Tuesdays, Week B and that she is able to assist parents with any issues they would like to raise.

stage 4 learning Presentations 2015All Year 7 and Year 8 have been issued with information regarding their Learning Presentations for 2015. Normal lessons for Year 7 will stop for the day on Monday October 26 to enable Year 7 to develop their presentations; normal lessons will stop for Year 8 on Friday 30 October to give Year 8 time to develop their presentations.

It is hoped as many Year 7 and Year 8 parents as possible will be making a time to hear their daughter’s presentation at school. Presentations are one of the most positive and valuable activities on the school calendar, and I know all parents will love hearing their daughter reflecting on her achievements for 2015 and her learning goals for 2016.

reportsOne of the reasons Learning Presentations were introduced last year is that the school is seeking more innovative, student centred strategies for reporting student achievement. The school’s reports for Years 7-10 have evolved so that the focus is on student achievement in relation the school’s learning code and BOSTES syllabus outcomes.

In most cases, reports will not contain a teacher comment, as it was found comments were largely a repeat of the information contained in the report’s learning profile and outcomes sections. Parents and carers are asked to carefully examine how their daughter has achieved in relation to both the learning profile and syllabus outcomes.

If additional information is required, parents can contact the subject Head Teacher. Reports will be issued on Monday December 14.

white ribbon Program, 2015White Ribbon Day is 25 November 2015. The SRC and Prefects will be undertaking activities on this day at school to recognise the important work White Ribbon does in promoting respect and safety for women.

Personal best 2015This year, the school has implemented a Personal Best program for Years 7 to 10 for two terms during DEAR time. Personal Best enables students to develop an understanding of age relevant issues which can impact upon their performance and participation at school.

To complete this program, students need their digital device and an electronic work booklet in which to record their responses to the issues explored. Students have until Week 3, Term 4 to complete their Personal Best program for 2015.

Students who complete the program will receive a certificate; have a positive entry made on their school record and yearly report. All parents are strongly encouraged to make sure their daughter has completed this important program.

reminders regarding Ongoing IssuesThe main issue I wanted to ask for all parent support with was in relation to leaving valuables unattended. Please reminding your daughter to NOT bring valuables to school, excursions, carnivals etc and to keep items such as phones, ipads, laptops on her person at all times.

As in the ‘real world’, if your daughter leaves valuables unattended somewhere, someone will likely take them, and there is nothing the school can do to retrieve the item. Great distress is invariably caused for both the student and her family if this happens. Please ask your daughter not to bring any valuable to school unless absolutely necessary.

Can I also remind parents that tights are unacceptable uniform at any time, except on Wednesdays for Sport when worn under either a skirt or shorts. Tights alone are never permissible. Your support with adhering to the school’s Uniform Code is very much appreciated!

The Police Youth Liaison Officer who supports our school address safety and security issues is Constable Jim Battalico who can be contacted at Ashfield Police Station – 9797 4099.

SCHOOLONCE MORE WITH FEELINGCANTERBURY GIRLS’ HIGH SCHOOL

Kool skools 2015 A preview of the upcoming album for Kool skools 2015:

the Power of story On Monday October 19 Gennie Nevinson presented engaging, wise and thrilling stories to Year 7 and 8 students. Gennie is an actor who has appeared in many films (e.g. ‘Muriel’s Wedding’) and TV dramas, most recently ‘Packed To The Rafters’. Gennie’s telling of the story of The Wimecks by Max Lucado

lead to a lively discussion on the meaning of the story and what kind of ending listeners expected. Gennie also demonstrated a fabulous story telling game called the Weaver and the Peddler. In this game students suggest 5 random objects, places, and characters to a volunteer student (The Weaver) who must tell a story including all the objects and then Peddle the story by adding more objects and characters suggested. Here is Hannah Veitch’s (7A) spontaneous story made (woven) in the game.

Small Beetle, Chicken, Potato, Venetian Mask, Fairy, Forest.

Once upon a time there lived a chicken. One day, this chicken decided to go for a walk through the forest. As he was walking through the pleasant forest, he met a fairy. This fairy in particular loved chickens so, she gave him a very special gift. The gift was the ability to mold, cut and shape any potato to look like anything the chicken wanted it to look like. The chicken was so grateful that the fairy gave him this amazing gift so he got to work straight away. After a few minutes he found a potato and he started to carve it into a miniature Venetian mask, after all who wouldn’t want to wear a miniature Venetian mask? The chicken was right because before long, a small beetle came flying by the chicken at work and asked if he could have the mask. The chicken was in such a good mood that day, so he gave it to him for free!

Premiers sporting challengeOur class 8A won the 2015 Premiers’ Sporting Challenge. Our class worked as a team to increase the hours of physical activity we did each week to win the challenge. As a reward for our hard work, we had an incursion on the last day of term. We started off the day with an hour of netball related activities and games. After netball we had a 45 minute interactive seminar with 2 other schools. In the seminar we got to talk two Olympians, Jayme Richardson and Craig Stevens, about their eating and sporting habits. We had a really good time and it was such a great experience to talk to such accomplished Olympians.

On Thursday 10th September, seven (7) mathematically talented Year 8 students (Stella Aroney, Belinda Carmona, Daphne Huang, Tran Nguyen, Anja Petkovic, Emily Phu and Lisa Vo) headed to Strathfield South High School to compete in a day of Maths puzzles, brain teasers and problem solving organised by MANSW (Maths Assoc of NSW). The students spent the day being actively engaged in various maths activities that were thought-provoking and challenging. Brains were on fire as our girls competed against the best from five other state high schools to win chocolates and points.

A typically thought provoking question was, ‘If two’s company, and three’s a crowd, what’s four and five?’ Ask one of the students that attended the day to check if your answer is correct.

The day started with each student sitting with their friend and solving a variety of maths problems. Then the students went outside to become untangled. Just ask Belinda how she got out of her bind (see photo above).

Then it was back inside to work with a student from another school. Stella Aroney from Canterbury Girls HS and another Stella from Strathfield Girls were the ultimate winners of the day. Congratulations to the Stellas.

A good day was had by all, and as a teacher it was wonderful to see students thoroughly engaged in maths, loving the challenges and actually running to get more questions.

Thanks to Ms H Simpson for helping transporting the student to and from the venue.

Geography NewsIn Geography we were assigned a group assignment. As a group we had to research a particular natural disaster and present it in the form of a News Report. We thoroughly enjoyed this task as we were able to work with friends to create an informative video using technology. After using a few lessons in class to work on our script, we started to film the video, using green screens and Photo Booth on a Macbook. Then, edited it at home, and our group was ready to present. Overall we found this task enjoyable because it was different.

Australian Mathematics competition 2015The Australian Mathematics Competition (AMC) has been held annually in August since 1978 with many thousands of students across Australia presenting for the challenge. This is not a traditional “maths” exam where skills taught in class are routinely tested. Instead students are asked to solve 30 problems in 60 minutes. The earliest problems are very easy and all students should be able to attempt them. The problems get progressively more difficult until the end, when they are challenging to the most gifted student. Students of all standards will make progress and find a point of challenge. The AMC is a fun competition with many of the problems set in situations familiar to students and showing the relevance of mathematics in their everyday lives.

This year Canterbury Girls High School entered 82 students across the 3 levels offered (18 Year 7 and 8 girls for the Junior paper, 32 Year 9 and 10 girls for the Intermediate paper and 17 Year 11 girls for the Senior paper).

Again our CGHS students achieved wonderful results with 27% of the candidates receiving an award of Credit or Distinction, and approximately 50% of students earning a Proficiency Certificate.

The following students are to be congratulated on receiving the following awards:

n Distinction Certificates Year 9: Coco Wang, Yanny Qiu Year 10: Mandy Chen Year 11: Xi Lin, Na Tian, Weijia Liu

n Credit Certificates Year 7: Amy Choi, Isabella Rocher, Sofia Goulding Year 8: Tran Nguyen Year 9: Eustacia Salim, Lucy Melville, Valerie Dang,

Chloe Beswick-Stott, Ella Reynolds Year 10: Cuiming Liu, Chenhui Zhao, Xu Zhou,

Huynh Thuy Bao Nguyen.

The Mathematics Faculty would like to congratulate all the students who gave themselves a personal challenge and entered the Australian Mathematics Competition irrespective of their final result. It is wonderful to receive an award, but it is equally important to expose yourself to a wide variety of mathematical experiences that stretch the brain and make you think in different ways. We would like to encourage more students from all ability levels to ‘have a go’ in 2016- you never know, you might just surprise yourself.

A personal thank you to Mr Sim who has organised and supervised this competition at CGHS for many years, and as this will be his last I would like to say congratulations to him on a job well done.
