GMR CHATTISGARH ENERGY PRIVATE LIMITEDThere are simple Dos and Donts for making a Canteen Kitchen Safe :Do'sIt should have good natural ventilation and should be well lit Ideally, Kitchen door should have 2 clearance from floor Cylinder should always be stored in an upright position Cylinder and rubber tube should be fully visible Stove should be placed above the cylinder level The cooking platform should be of non-inflammable material like stone, brick etc.

MONTH :

Dont's

Dont keep cylinder in a closed cupboard, if it is a must, then the cabinet door and floor should have minimum 2 clearance between them Dont use any cover on the rubber tube Dont keep refrigerator in your kitchen Stove/Hotplate burners should not be in line with the air draft from windows / doors. Exhaust fan should not be fitted above the burner. It lifts the flame. Storage Cabinets should not be fitted above the Hotplate. Pooja Ghar should not be in the Kitchen. Never place your Stove on ground for cooking convenience. Kitchen / Pantry should not be below ground level i.e. basements etc.

Check points when received the refill. You may undertake simple checks at the time of your refill receipt :Check the seal of the cylinder. Check the safety cap. It should not have any cracks. Remove safety Cap and check for leakage from the valve. Usually in case of any leakage from the Cylinder valve, the safety cap will pop off at the time of removal. This can be further reaffirmed by placing your thumb on the cylinder valve. Get the new cylinder connected with the Stove/hotplate and make sure that no leakage is observed. Have it removed, fit the safety cap on the cylinder valve and store it aside at a safe cool place. Reconnect old cylinder in use.

How should maintain LPG installation.Clean the Stove/hotplate after each cooking. Clean the rubber tube with wet cloth after cooking. Check rubber tube for any cracks. Close the pressure regulator knob. Clean up the choked holes of the burner, but once it is cooled off lest you hurt yourself touching a hot burner.

Following simple tips can be followed for conserving LPG :Soak pulses in water before cooking. Soak hard pulses like Bengal gram etc. overnight. Use Pressure cooker. Use lid over the cooking vessel while cooking. Use right size vessel as per the quantity of food to be cooked. Choose right size of the burner. Use small burner for smaller vessels. Use flat bottom vessels. Do not use excess water. Once the liquid starts boiling, put the burner flame on `sim position. Prepare for everything before you start actual cooking. Take out frozen foods; bring it to room temperature before reheating / cooking.

Simple steps in case you smell LPG and suspect leakageClose the Stove/hotplate burner knob. Close the Pressure Regulator knob. Open all windows and doors, allow the natural air circulation in the area. Dont touch any electrical switches. Put off naked flames. Inform your distributor.

Safe storage of spare / additional cylinderAlways Keep it in upright position. Store it in an open / cool place, away from direct sunlight and any other source of direct heat. Cylinders should not be stored below the staircase. Do not store it with any other fuels close by. Do not keep cylinder in a closed storeroom or cabinet etc. Always keep it fitted with the security cap.

Good habits for safe CookingLPG is a very safe fuel, however it pays to take simple precautions while cooking :Wear cotton clothes. Preferably use cotton apron while cooking. Use match sticks instead of gas lighter etc. First light the match stick and then open the burner knob. Use tongs to lift utensil. Do not use synthetic cloth to pick up hot vessels off the burner - they may catch fire. Dont store things behind the Stove/hotplate. Close pressure regulator knob after finishing cooking. Clean the rubber tube every day with wet cloth Do not place hotplate on ground. Clean Stove/hotplate burner regularly - Blue flame is the correct flame. Good Practices for Multi Cylinder (Manifold) Installations. LPG Cylinder manifold and pipeline installation should be designed, fabricated and tested as per IS: 6044 (Part 1-1971). Quick Shut off valves and the Fire Extinguishers must be checked periodically to ensure that they work in times of emergency. Cylinders should always be kept connected through pigtails with the manifold. Ground level ventilation in the manifold room / enclosure must be maintained at all times. The brass wire mesh of 11 strands per linear centimeters should be provided on the ventilators of the manifold rooms. It must be maintained in sound and clean condition at all times. The manifold should be designed as per LPG consumption rating of the burner to be installed and on the peak consumption rate. Incorrectly designed manifold, at a later date, may pose operational problems such as sweating of cylinders, drop in rate of LPG withdrawal, residual LPG in used cylinders etc. Burners must be cleaned periodically to ensure good blue flame at burner ports. In commercial places like Canteen etc. the LPG burners should be lighted only when needed. Each LPG usage area should have required fire-fighting provisions as per guiding rules. "No smoking" must be practiced in the manifold and nearby areas.
