    Please read these "Important Safety Instructions" thoroughly before operating

    InstallationWARNING Do not install the machine near alcohol, paint thinner, or other flammable substa

    substances come into contact with electrical parts inside the machine, it may reselectrical shock.

    Do not place the following items on the machine.     Power SupplyWARNING Do not damage or modify the power cord. Also, do not place heavy objects on th

    Maintenance and InspectionsWARNING When cleaning the machine, disconnect the power cord. Failure to observe thes

    in a fire or electrical shock. Disconnect the power cord from the power outlet regularly, and clean the area ar

    the power plug's metal pins and the power outlet with a dry cloth to ensure thatis removed. If the power cord is connected for a long period of time in a damp, dlocation, dust can build up around the power plug and become damp. This maycircuit and result in a fire.

    Clean the machine using a slightly dampened cloth with a mild detergent mixeduse alcohol, benzene, paint thinner, or other flammable substances. Check deterflammability prior to use. If flammable substances come into contact with a high-inside the machine, it may result in a fire or electrical shock.

    There are some areas inside the machine which are subject to high-voltages. Whjammed paper or when inspecting the inside of the machine, do not allow necklaother metal objects to touch the inside of the machine, as this may result in burnshock.

    Do not burn or throw used toner cartridges into open flames, as this may cause thinside the cartridge to ignite, resulting in burns or a fire.

    CAUTION The toner fixing unit and its surroundings inside the machine may become hot d

    removing jammed paper or when inspecting the inside of the machine, do not touunit and its surroundings, as doing so may result in burns or electrical shock.

    When removing jammed paper or replacing the toner cartridge, take care not to acome into contact with your hands or clothing, as this will dirty your hands or clbecome dirty, wash them immediately with cold water. Washing them with warm

    toner, and make it impossible to remove the toner stains.

    The machine is heavy. Be sure to follow these general guidelines when liftingmove it or to install the optional paper cassette.

    Moving the machine requires two people. When you lift the machine, remove the paper cassette from the machine, an

    Loading Paper

    This section describes how to load paper into the paper cassettes.

    NOTE For instructions explaining how to load paper into the MP tray, see Chapter 2, G

    the Reference Guide.

    Paper CassettesIf your machine comes with more than one paper cassettes, you can use thiseach one.The paper cassette can be adjusted to hold standard A or B series paper or iand can hold up to approximately 250 sheets of paper.

    For high-quality printouts, we recommend using Canon standard 60 to 105 g/

    Whenever you change the paper size, you have to adjust the paper size setticassette using the PAPER SETTINGS menu. (See Setting the Paper Size foCassettes, on p. 2-10.)

    IMPORTANT Use of print media not meeting the paper requirements, may cause severe paper

    This section briefly describes the methods and advantages of the three main sMemory Sending, Direct Sending, and Manual Sending.

    Memory SendingMemory Sending enables you to scan and send your documents fast, allowing you toback quickly so you do not have to spend so much time standing around the machinescanning documents for sending even while the machine is busy sending another do

    Direct SendingThe machine dials the number, connects the call, and then scans and sends the docutime. Direct Sending is slower than Memory Sending, but because this method bypasyou can send a document ahead of other documents stored in memory.

    What Is Speed Dialing?

    Speed dialing enables you to streamline and customize dialing procedures bytelephone number and other important settings so you can start a document trpressing only a few keys.

    The four methods of speed dialing include:

    One-Touch Speed DialingOne-touch speed dialing enables you to start a document transmission by pressing ocan register up to 72 destinations for one-touch speed dialing. The first group of keysare on the operation panel. Open the first panel to see keys 25 to 48, then the seconlast group of keys 49 to 72.

    Coded Speed DialingCoded speed dialing enables you to start a document transmission by pressing (Cby a three digit code of your choice. It enables you to register up to 128 destinations fdialing.

    Group DialingGroup dialing enables you to dial a group of registered one-touch or coded speed dialiregistering each group under one-touch (or coded speed dialing) keys, you press onlto send the same document to several locations. You can create up to 199 groups.

    Access Code Dialing

    Coded Speed DialingFollow this procedure to start a transmission and send a document by pressinfollowed by a three digit code.

    Using Directory Dialing

    Receiving Documents

    You can receive document transmissions automatically or manually. This sectAutomatic Receive mode.

    NOTE To use Manual Receive mode, it is required to install the optional handset kit or c

    telephone to answer telephone calls. For instructions explaining how to receive documents manually, see Chapter 4,

    Documents, in the Facsimile Guide.

    Receiving Documents AutomaticallyAfter you take your machine out of the box and set it up, it is set to receive doautomatically. Use the Automatic Receive mode for a machine on a dedicatethat you do not need for telephone voice communication.

    Setting the Automatic Receive ModeCheck the LCD display. If is displayed, the machine is in the Autommode.

    Reception Error MessagesHere are few of the most common error messages. The machine has run out of paper while printing a document:

    The toner cartridge has run out of toner while printing a document:

    Open the printer cover and replace the toner cartridge. As soon as you close the covreturns to the Standby mode and the remainder of the document in memory starts pri(See Changing the Toner Cartridge, on p. 4-1.)
