CVTM President’s Message

Hi all members and guests,

A new Toastmasters year brings a new committee and a new set of goals for us to

strive to achieve. I am so overjoyed to be the President of our amazing club during

our 10th year and have high expectations, as we set sail the good ship Canning

Vale, to be a Presidents Distinguished Club once again. Of course, we will aim to

be the first club in the world to reach 10 goals, as we did last year.

I was so surprised and overwhelmed when I was

announced as Toastmaster of the Year for CVTM

2016/17 and I join a very elite set of Toastmasters

who have done so much for our club.

I want to congratulate Dennis Foo and his team for

the amazing year we had last year and especially

Eloyise Braskic, our VPE, who did an amazing job in keeping our members

focused and on track to achieve their goals and over all, the club goals.

I know our new committee of Andre, Hadi, Ronnie,

Colin, John, Raj and myself will do our best to help all

of our members achieve their goals this year.

It’s full steam ahead for the SS Canning Vale to

Presidents Distinguished!

- Mark Richards DTM

The Fantastic 4: Meeting 439

I was lamenting - wanting more land... more space for an orchard, vegetable patch and chickens...maybe even a cow. A very wise friend went to his bookshelf & handed

me a small book of short stories written by Leo Tolstoy. The story I retold was called How Much is Enough! I really like stories with surprising endings & this was one of those stories! Although it was written over 100 years ago the moral of this story is just as relevant today. We can spend our time desiring, wanting and chasing more but in the end it does you in. I remind myself of this story when I start dreaming of Daisy the milking cow!

My Speech involved techniques for interper-

sonal communication. I ran through the differ-

ent stages of rapport and had a role playing

session with Shree.

I was inspired to give this speech as I have al-

ways had some social anxiety and am interest-

ed in ways of overcoming it. I think a lot of us

have issues of running out of things to talk

about, so I addressed this in my speech. Using

acronym HPM—History Philosophy Metaphor.

We had an all star cast at meeting number 439 with 4 fantastic speeches! I interviewed the speakers at this meeting to hear where

they got their inspiration from.

The Fantastic 4: Meeting 439 cont...

The CC6 speech on 'Vocal Variety' titled Airports, was

a collection of my personal 'funny' experiences at air-

ports during my work and holiday travel over the years.

The speech starts off with a typical airport announce-

ment and then sets the scene with relatable experienc-

es at arrival and departure gates. The

next announcement is a typical announcement which

leads the speech into my immigration experiences in

other countries, namely with stories from the UK, USA and Cambodia. Finally there is an in

plane announcement on landing in Perth, which leads to a brief story on Australian customs. The

speech finishes with 'Happy to be home' and thanking the audience for taking a trip with me to the

airport .

The inspiration for the speech came when I was looking at a topic to use for the CC6 vocal variety.

I was sharing one of the airport stories with a friend and he thought it was funny. So I thought I

should expand this and incorporate the dialogues and emotions to write the story for the CC6

speech.

I thought this topic and the stories would appeal to the audience, as all can relate to this because

personal stories seemed to work well for me with the audience over the last few speeches

I went to India for my cousin’s wedding earlier this

year in April and thought I would write a speech about

wedding ceremonies in India, and the different mean-

ing each ceremony has (Roce, Mendhi and the Wed-

ding) to me.

I felt it was an interesting topic, a lot of people are fas-

cinated by Indian weddings and it is a very relatable

subject.

Eloyise Braskic; A year in the role of VPE

Q: How did you find your role as VPE at CVTM?

I was incredibly fortunate to spend a year in the role of Canning Vale Toastmasters Vice President Education.

The role entails assembly of and updating the club’s weekly agenda and coordinating agenda roles based on people’s learning and capabilities.

There are very strong accountabilities associated with taking on the responsibility of VPE.

I noticed if I missed meetings not only would I miss a piece of magic every week, but I’d also fall behind with following the advancement of members. Thankfully, Mark and Robyn Richards where there the whole way through, and were always willing to lend a hand of support to keep me up to date. I couldn’t have done the role without their generous support and leadership.

Q: What is the biggest take away for you that your learnt during your time?

I was given a magnificent insight into the culture and inner workings of the club’s dynamic.

My biggest take-away from the role was having patience with people, but also not being afraid to reach out to people for support or to support them.

There were numerous times when a person would withdraw last minute, and I could either reach out to the group for someone to step up, or step up myself and speak to that person and see if I could help them with why they wanted to withdraw so suddenly. It was an insight into other people’s strengths and weaknesses and every time, every meeting, without fail, someone would astound you and inspire you.

Q: Why would you recommend this role to another member?

I’d fully recommend everyone giving the VPE role a go, at least once in his or her Toastmasters journey.

It gives you a lot more respect & appreciation for what goes into making such an inspiring & successful club like Canning Vale what it really is.

We are stronger together and we progress & advance in our public speaking journeys much quicker, because of the amount of support we have behind each other.

This role has taught me a lot about people, and people are the source of everything in our world.

Without people we’d be incredibly lonely.
