Into the New Year Edition

New year – new street lighting

You may have noticed most of the surrounding roads have new street lighting. There is no fixed date for our two roads to have new lighting but we have been told it may be some time in 2016.

Because we form part of the East India Estate Conservation Area, Skanska, Croydon’s contractor, will install a different style of light from the sleek modern ones elsewhere. We will have the Ely. The final layout in each street has not been finalised but the lights are likely to be around six metres tall and positioned for maximum lighting effect. If there is any intrusive lighting shining into someone’s home, then Skanska are able to shield part of the lantern to mitigate this. The shields are not automatically installed so any residents affected will need to contact Skanska directly themselves. This system has worked elsewhere locally.

Happy Christmas!

If you have any questions, contact John Algar of Skanska at PFI Contract Manager, Place Department, Croydon & Lewisham Street Lighting PFI, Client Monitoring Team Tel: 0208 394 4717 Mob: 07917 555 216,

For fault repairs contact 0800 028 5986 or [email protected] or via www.croydon.gov.uk/streetlighting

Suggestion for use of Ward Budget

We gave information on the Ward Budget in our October newsletter. Copies of newsletters can be seen on the News page of our website. Information on Ward budgets is available at libraries.

Hilary Bell of East Croydon Communities Organisation, our neighbouring residents’ group, has suggested it be used to open Tunstall Children’s Centre in Tunstall Road in Sundays. This would enable families to use the play facilities and provide some workshops or activities for families. If you would like to know more, contact Hilary on

[email protected]. If you do not have email, you can let Anne know and she’ll pass it on to Hilary.

Play Streets

Croydon Council is encouraging the development of Play Streets. The Council is looking for local residents to run these schemes in their roads. It involves closing the road temporarily for a few hours once a month or once a week so that children can play in the road.

The Croydon Guide gives advice on how to go about setting up a Play Street in your road.

If you are interested in setting up a Play Street scheme in either Canning or Clyde Road, then we are happy to publicise information on our website and in the newsletter. Please note that those interested would have total responsibility for fully consulting with all other residents as to whether they will agree to the road being closed before going ahead; also full responsibility for organising and running all aspects of the event.

More information is on Croydon Council’s website at https://www.croydon.gov.uk/healthsocial/families/ccfpartnership/playstreets

Community Garden in Addiscombe Railway Park?

From Lauren A of Friends of Addiscombe Railway Park

We are thinking about building a community garden in Addiscombe Railway Park, where people can grow food and flowers together, sharing the work as well as the harvests. If this is something you are interested in we would love to hear from you, all abilities welcome! We are already planting an orchard of apple, pear and plum trees. Once in the ground the trees will need to be loved and nurtured for years to come, including watering, pruning, clearing away weeds and of course picking fruit! In addition, throughout the year we will hosting special events in the park where people can join in with gardening, enjoy guided tours, socialise and have fun. There are lots of reasons to get involved:

• Meet your neighbours and make new friends • Enjoy lots of free tasty fresh organic local fruit and vegetables • Learn about trees and plants and how to look after them • Learn how to grow your own food • Make the park even more beautiful with blossom, flowers and crops all year round • Enjoy some fresh air and exercise • Provide a home for local wildlife, including our butterflies and friendly bees • It’s free! We already have some tools and gloves, although you would be welcome to bring your own if you prefer. We are also working with the Garden Organic Master Gardeners so if you are new to gardening our mentors will be on hand to share their knowledge, experience and passion for food growing. There are lots of other ways that you can get involved too, even for just an hour or two each month, like helping with refreshments, organising, marketing or you may have some other talent you are willing to share to make the community garden a success?

If you are interested, please contact Lauren through http://park.addiscombe.net/ or c/o Friends of Addiscombe Railway Park, 243 Morland Road, Croydon, Surrey CR0 6HE

Local cafes

Cafes have long been with us but in the last two or three years they have become increasingly popular. We thought over the next two or three newsletters we’d tell you about one or two local cafes within a 10 minute walk in both directions from our roads. We’re starting with the nearest – Croydon Café.

Café Adagio, corner of Lower Addiscombe Road and Everton Road

Beautiful coffee, good choice of other drinks, variety of fresh, largely seasonal food – Café Adagio offers these and lots more.

It’s a place for people to relax. You’ll see regulars contentedly sitting for a long time, some chatting with friends. Others, on their own, feel comfortable to watch the world go by or be absorbed in their laptop or smartphone. There is soft, background music, some of which is familiar, some new. Artwork by local artists lines the walls. Everyone is made to feel welcome. There is no pressure to move on.

Café Adagio opened just over a year ago. Atif, originally from Park Hill, chose this location to open his café not only because of the footfall but also because of the friendliness of people walking by in the street in Addiscombe. He wanted to open a music and arts community café that gives ‘opportunities for local artists and musicians to showcase their work directly to the local community’. As well as an exhibition of works by a local artist that changes roughly every month, Atif holds an Open Mic session every last Friday of the month. This is an acoustic session where local musicians turn up and play. The upcoming Open Mic sessions are on Friday 18 December and Friday 29 January. Everyone is welcome to go along and either play or just listen.

Atif chooses a menu that changes during the year to include plenty of seasonal food. As he said, ‘If I’m bored with serving what’s on the menu, customers will be bored with eating it’ so he rings the changes. There is a mixture of the kind of food currently often seen in cafes and also something different to cater for a variety of tastes. No fry-ups, mind you – the food is fresh and nourishing.

Earlier this year Atif organised an event that raised money for a local young people’s charity. As he said, Atif is ‘keen to promote activities to further the future of our next generation.’

Croydon Café, Lower Addiscombe Road by the zebra crossing

For ’Breakfast Heaven on Earth’ --- with seven sets and three specials --- look no further than the Croydon Café at 117 Lower Addiscombe Road (next door to Portman Cars).

Shanny and Safie behind the counter will welcome you warmly and serve you a variety of basic but excellent home-cooked food --- not just breakfasts --- in generous portions and at very reasonable prices. The grilled garlic chicken with rice and salad is only £5.50, for instance. Add the apple pie, if you have room, and you will still get change from your tenner.

There is limited forecourt parking at the front, and often a lively and friendly lunchtime clientele. Open Monday to Saturdays from 7am to 3.30 pm, Sundays 9 am to 3 pm. Gratuities at your discretion.

Anyone willing to volunteer to do a review of a Café / coffee shop in Cherry Orchard Road or Lower Addiscombe Road between Canning Road and Windmill Bridge? Please contact Anne if you are.

New year – new help for those not used to laptops, smartphones etc

In order to save money the Council, Government, NHS, shops and lots of organisations are increasingly putting information primarily (or solely) online. We as a residents association do what we can for those who are not online through our newsletters and providing paper copies of emails to those in our Quick Contact Group who are not online. Make no mistake, however, information and access to services is going to become increasingly digitised with fewer and fewer options for people who are not online.

Croydon Council has started a free one-year scheme, GoOn Croydon, to provide user-friendly help for those who are not used to laptops, tablets, ipads, smartphones etc.

GoOn Croydon is a weekly drop-in service at Access Croydon, on the ground floor of Bernard Weatherill House. Go On Croydon is being held every Friday from 9.00am to 4.00pm. It does not matter that you may have no experience whatsoever – no one is going to judge you.

There is no charge for this service. People chose what they would like to learn or have help with and can do as much as they are comfortable with.

A member of staff or volunteer will ask the person what it is they would like to do, eg look at comparison web sites to save money on their bills. Or maybe they would like to know how to email to keep in touch with family and friends, even go on Facebook, whatever makes them feel comfortable to start off.

The session is open to all and people can come and chat to one of the volunteers. If after a session someone would like to learn more, the staff or volunteer can book them an appointment or give them advice where they can go for extra tuition.

People don’t need to bring anything but themselves. The GoOn team provide the iPad to use whilst they are here.

If you would like further information, contact Bonnie Kichenside, Team Manager, Access Croydon, Bernard Wetherall House, 8, Mint Walk, Croydon CR0 1EA Tel 0208 726 6000 (ext.14010)
