Canine Partners For Life is a 21-year voting member and an accredited member of Assistance Dogs International

Dear Friends:

The past few months

have been extra busy

for us at CPL. Not only

did we run our Summer

and Fall Team Training

programs and host our

most successful Open

House ever, but we also successfully concluded our re-

accreditation through Assistance Dogs International.

The ADI re-accreditation is tremendously important to

us. There are only about 60 service dog organizations

worldwide that are accredited, so this is a significant

accomplishment for CPL. The process, which is repeated

every five years, takes about 12—18 months of preparation.

ADI evaluates virtually every aspect of an assistance dog

program: safety and cleanliness of the training facility, fair

and ethical treatment of clients, proper health care for the

dogs, humane training methods for the dogs, criteria for

screening suitability of both dogs and clients, criteria for

matching dogs and clients, and compliance with all legal

regulations. Our evaluators were extremely complimentary

toward our program and are recommending six of our

“best practices” to the rest of their accredited groups!

Read more about the accreditation below.

As I mentioned in our last newsletter, our Board of

Directors has approved a Strategic Plan that will see CPL

through the next three years. We have a lot of work

ahead of us, but we’re committed to two programming

goals (to streamline our community and prison puppy

raising programs and to identify new recipient

populations to serve) and to build a new training facility

and expand our current office space. If you would like

to have a copy of the plan, please contact Peggy White

at [email protected] and she will send

you a copy. The Board of Directors worked extremely

hard on this plan for the future. We would love to

share it with you!

As always, I want to thank you for being a part of the

CPL family. Best wishes to you for all your support.

Independence is beautiful!

Sincerely,

Executive Director/Founder

Canine Partners For Life

As mentioned in Darlene’s

letter, CPL recently went

through the re-accreditation

process with Assistance Dogs

International (ADI). We are extremely pleased to have

been awarded another 5-year accreditation (the maximum

allowable award).

ADI is a coalition of assistance dog organizations which sets

the standards and ethics for this industry. The purpose of

the ADI accreditation is to evaluate and recognize those

assistance dog organizations that operate according to the

very strict quality standards set by ADI. These standards of

excellence ensure that dogs trained to assist people with

disabilities are trained appropriately and treated humanely

and with respect. In addition, the organization is evaluated

as to how well its graduate teams are prepared for the

challenges they will encounter and whether they will receive

the support needed to succeed in their ongoing partnership.

We did receive some excellent suggestions for

improving our processes (hint to puppy homes: keep

your ears peeled for fire drills in class). Overall,

however, our peer reviewers couldn’t seem to find

enough superlatives to describe their impressions of

CPL’s programs, services, staff, and volunteers! They

used words and expressions such as “awesome,

phenomenal, class act, and the cat’s meow.”

In addition to our 5-year accreditation, we were cited for

six “best practices,” which are areas in which CPL will be

held up as a standard bearer within the international

assistance dog industry:

• CPL’s volunteer program

• CPL’s follow-up system with teams who have graduated

• CPL’s veterinary sponsorship system for puppies

• CPL’s practice of providing recipients with skill cards

to practice daily

• CPL’s practice of working with Hosts for Hospitals to

provide housing for recipients during Team Training

• CPL’s pre-packet of documentation that was provided

prior to the assessors’ site visit.

Many, many thanks go to CPL staff, volunteers, Board

members, and graduates who prepared well in advance

of the on-site visit and participated actively in the survey

while it was being conducted on our campus. We can all

be very proud of this achievement!

RICHARD AND AAJAKPuppy Breeder and Donor—Mr. and Mrs. Robert Brunk

Puppy Namer—Ms. ElaineBerger

Puppy Home—StateCorrectional Institution,Smithfield

Veterinary Sponsor—MetzgerAnimal Hospital

Rick returned to us as an experienced service dog

partner. His first CPL seizure alert dog, Bear, had

transformed Rick’s life, giving him confidence instead

of fear and independence rather than restriction. When

Bear’s health forced an early retirement, the impact on

Rick was huge: Rick told us he simply would not leave the

safety of his home until a successor dog was available.

Fortunately, Aajak was more than ready to step up to the

plate! Their Team Training wasn’t easy: Rick had frequent

seizures from the stress and the heat, not to mention the

physical and emotional expectations of the program—

but Rick and Aajak gave 100% to the learning and

bonding process. Rick has a great appreciation and

understanding that Aajak is not Bear—and that their

partnership will be different. The best part about this

team is that they’ll be at CPL every week for Rick’s day

of volunteer work that we’ve come to depend on. These

two are what CPL is all about!

DESI AND WALTONPuppy Breeder and Donor—Ms. Lisa Anderson

Puppy Namer—Wal-Mart #285 Huntsville, TX

Puppy Home—State Correctional Institution, Albion

Veterinary Sponsor—Twinbrook Veterinary Hospital

When you’re a teacher, you always have to be careful

not to “lose” that student who doesn’t demand your

attention—the one who comes to class prepared, who

follows the rules, who respects what you ask her to do,

who simply loves to learn. Desi was that student. While

her first few days of training were quite a challenge,

Desi and Walton worked through them—and it didn’t

take long before they were completely engaged and

soaking up information like a sponge. Desi knows how

to focus completely on her partnership with Walton

and how to appreciate small gains. Her face just glowed

when she reported to her journal group how proud she

was of Walton when he walked through the grocery

store candy aisle without even sniffing at the candy.

That ability to take pride in her partner and partnership

will take Desi far. She has shown a maturity beyond her

years, and her dog positively swaggers when he walks—

he’s so proud to be her partner! In her application,

Desi stated that she would like to feel less “invisible”—

we don’t think there’s any chance of her feeling that

way now!

(Please note that Desi's photo was omitted at

her request.)

ANNE AND GIZMO

Puppy Breeder and Donor—Ms. Jennifer Smith

Puppy Namer—Mr. and Mrs.John Capobianco

Puppy Home—StateCorrectional Institution, Albion

Temporary Training Home—Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Stark

Veterinary Sponsor—AlbionAnimal Center, Inc.

This young woman, having survived a traumatic brain injury,

has strength and patience far beyond anything we’ve ever seen

at CPL. When she sets her mind on a goal, Anne gets it done, no

matter how long it takes. And please—don’t tell her you’ll do it

for her –she’s going to do it herself! It might not be quick, but it

will get done and it will get done well. Anne was placed with a

very special dog. Gizmo’s original partner had passed away

from ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease) after a short placement and

had returned to CPL wanting to help another special person.

Theirs was an obvious placement—Anne needed a large,

strong, patient dog to support her while she walks. Gizmo’s

a big, big guy, so some of the Team Training field trips were

challenging: fitting him under the bleacher at the Blue Rocks

game, under the seat of the SEPTA train, and under the table

at Chili’s took a little doing. We’re so happy that these two live

nearby, because we’ll be able to watch them grow together!

(See the letter from Gizmo’s puppy trainer below.)

HAZEL AND CHESSIE

Puppy Breeder and Donor—Ms. Bonnie Bilski

Puppy Namer—Miss CrystalFertig

Puppy Home—StateCorrectional Institution, Albion

Veterinary Sponsor—AlbionAnimal Center, Inc.

This kind-hearted grandmother of four (three princesses

and one prince) is looking forward to a partnership that

will help ease some of the pain that comes from her

disability. As a counselor and advocate within a Victim’s

Resource Center, Hazel is able to bring peace and

comfort to others, and now it’s Chessie’s job to help her

find that peace and comfort. Chessie tested his mom

during training; he wanted to make sure that this

partnership was worth working for. Hazel has put away

her cane, finding that Chessie does a much better job

of keeping her on her feet. By allowing him to fulfill his

role, Hazel will find more and more things that she’s

able to do. A dog this cute (we think he looks a lot like

Hazel!) can only bring smiles and friendly interactions

with the world. The independence that comes from

being able to move with less pain and more security

can make each day more hopeful and filled with

new opportunities.

ZACHARY AND BENTLEYPuppy Breeder and Donor—CPL

Stud Donor—Mrs. MelissaLemoi

Puppy Namer—Ms. SusanFontaine

Puppy Home—StateCorrectional Institution, Muncy

Veterinary Sponsor—AnimalCare Hospital

Watch these two for a little while, and you’ll realize

that this is definitely a two-way partnership: each

gives the other exactly what he needs to feel needed,

loved, confident, and hopeful. Zach is a very mature,

responsible, sensitive, and serious young man with

a great, dry sense of humor. After struggling to control

a seizure disorder for almost 20 years, Zach saw a

sudden increase in his seizures’ severity and frequency,

causing him to lose his driver’s license and job (not

to mention self-esteem). These two charged through

Team Training, working hard, invested in learning.

Bentley did mutilate the water bottle they retrieved

at Longwood, and he wasn’t too keen on retrieving

that industrial-sized broom on the last training day…

and then there was the mat that he simply refused

to sit on during the obstacle course…but we think

that Bentley realizes his dad means business. While

they’re going to have a lot of fun in their partnership,

they’re also going to get the work done and they’re

going to do it well. They’ve headed home to Washington

D.C. to learn to navigate the city independently and

take back control of Zach’s life. It’s time for a job,

independence, fun (like golf), and family.

FULL SERVICETEAMS

CPL trains service dogs to provide physical assistance to their partner 24 hours a day in

home and public environments (for example, individuals with disabilities caused by ALS,

Parkinson’s, multiple sclerosis, muscular dystrophy, arthritis, diabetes, chronic fatigue

syndrome, paralysis, amputation, and more). Seizure-alert dogs are specialized service

dogs trained to detect and alert to upcoming seizure activity.

Dear Gizmo’s new recipient:

I write this letter in hope that it will express to you

and to CPL how much Gizmo and the CPL Prison

Puppy Program mean to me.

I am an inmate at S.C.I. Albion. Before I became an

“inmate,” I was a person who enjoyed helping others.

One of the most rewarding times of my life was when

I used to work as an EMT firefighter. Saving lives and

helping others was a normal everyday thing. Then, I took

another man’s life and came to prison for doing exactly

the opposite of what I used to enjoy doing so much.

In prison, “helping others” is not something that you

see on a regular basis, especially because most of us

are the ones in need of help. Then the Prison Puppy

Program came along. I said to myself, “I need to get into

this program. I need to experience that great feeling of

helping others again.” The CPL staff came and trained

us handlers well. Then, during my second year as a

handler, Gizmo arrived.

When Gizmo graduated and was placed with his first

partner, I was so proud of him. I received a letter and a

picture from Gizmo’s partner explaining how grateful she

was for the love and training that I provided to him. At

that point it hit me: I finally had that feeling again, that

feeling of helping people and the feeling of self-worth.

Sadly though, Gizmo’s partner passed away. I had

always hoped to meet Gizmo’s partner in person in order

to see Gizmo do what he did best—that is, help others.

Now that Gizmo has a new partner, I hope that he

provides you with the same companionship that

he provided to his old handler and myself.

Signed,

Gizmo’s first dad

JOHN AND NEVILLEPuppy Breeder and Donor—Ms. Tina Barks

Puppy Namer—Ms. L.J. Tessier

Puppy Home—The MooreFamily

Veterinary Sponsor—Colebrook Manor AnimalHospital

When a person has learned to

live with the assistance of a service dog, and when that dog

has emotionally supported him through tough times and good

times, it is sometimes hard to consider that another dog could

ever fill that spot in your soul. And yet, John recognized the

void that existed after he lost his first CPL dog, Sentinel.

Without a partner to motivate you to get up and out each

day, it’s easy to become less active—physically, mentally, and

emotionally. After spending 46 years using a wheelchair, John

knows what he needs to maximize his independence. So even

though his heart still ached for Sentinel, John entered Team

Training excited for a new partner. There is a very special

friendship forming between these two, and we loved seeing

the light come back into John’s eyes—and his many beautiful

smiles as he’s begun to appreciate his new partner’s talents

and humor. We think that Neville is really going to enjoy

fishing. When we think of the two of them enjoying that

time together, it makes us smile!

LEE AND ALEPOPuppy Donor—Mrs. PatriciaMonaghan

Puppy Namer—Dr. DebbieRoberts

Puppy Home—StateCorrectional Institution, Muncy

Veterinary Sponsor—LoyalsockVeterinary Hospital, Inc.

Alepo is Lee’s third CPL seizure

alert dog, so she’s got a lot of experience under her belt as

someone whose life was changed dramatically with the

assistance of a service dog. Lee had a lot of seizure activity

during Team Training, and Lupus made physical stamina

difficult. Alepo learned pretty quickly that keeping his new mom

on her feet after a seizure was going to take all of his attention

and control, because she tends to move like she’s drunk—and

try as he might, he couldn’t prevent that nose dive on the Blue

Rocks ramp. He’s learned how stubborn she is, so even on the

first night he laid his entire body across her to prevent her from

getting up too soon after a seizure. Lee was a great educator for

this class, sharing her past experiences with her dogs and

helping the new students by encouraging them through the

tougher challenges. Lee always has a smile for everyone and

has that unique ability to laugh at herself and not take life too

seriously. She knows how to have fun with her partner and how

to make him feel special and important. We’re glad that these

two live nearby to watch their lives grow together.

ISAAC AND STELLAPuppy Breeder and Donor—Mrs. Caley Dorsett

Puppy Namer—Mr. and Mrs.Collins and the CollinsFoundation

Puppy Home—StateCorrectional Institution,Smithfield

Veterinary Sponsor—MetzgerAnimal Hospital

This was the speed-demon team—they did everything fast—

from zooming around the training barn to zipping down the

road in their red sports car! We remember delivering Stella to

the prison in Smithfield for her year of puppy training and

saying to our volunteer trainers—good luck with this one,

she’s going to be a handful! And yet, her puppy raisers

channeled that intelligence and energy in a positive way.

During her second year, her CPL trainer added polish and

technique. Put it all together, and you get one really good

service dog. Match that with a positive, hard-working, and

motivated partner like Isaac, and you know you’re going to

have a great team. Watching Isaac come up with a creative

method to have Stella help him off the floor and into his

wheelchair assured us that these two will always be learning

new things together. Isaac gives sincere praise without

holding back, and as a result, we believe that his dog would

try to do almost anything for him. With a new engineering

degree in his pocket and his new partner at his side, they’ve

headed home to South Dakota to motocross and car racing.

We’re really going to miss them!

ANTHONY AND PHINEASPuppy Breeder and Donor—CPL

Stud Donor—Ms. MargaretUlmer

Puppy Namer—GenuardiFamily Foundation

Puppy Home—StateCorrectional Institution,Smithfield and the Fertig Family

Veterinary Sponsor—Metzger Animal Hospital andLongwood Veterinary Center, Inc.

Anthony’s genuine kindness, focus, and complete commitment

to learning how to be the best service dog partner that he can

be to Phineas impressed us tremendously. He truly gave 100%.

We had to work on his correction voice for a while—Phineas

thought he might be joking the first couple of times that he

tried to put a bit of firmness in his voice—but boy, did that

improve over time! Phineas realized that while his dad was

being polite, he did mean business and expected as much from

his dog as he expected from himself. Anthony was in a lot of

pain, but still he walked the Exton Mall, Longwood Gardens,

the Philadelphia Zoo, and downtown Philadelphia—his

determination was amazing! Anthony’s objective was to give

up one of the two crutches that he used to walk and instead

use a dog and a crutch—something that he accomplished

quickly. Now he walks more easily with the support and energy

from his dog to make walking less painful and more efficient.

We at CPL are so happy that we can call him a friend! We hope

that he and Phineas will be back to visit frequently!

ABIGAYIL AND INGLISPuppy Breeder and Donor—Ms. Judy McCormick, Keepsake Labradors

Veterinary Sponsor—Nonantum Veterinary Clinic

Abby traveled from California to join our Team Training

program. Her enthusiasm kept her going despite pain, as well

as the difficulty in dealing with our famous Pennsylvania

humidity. She worried if she would be able to handle a 63 lb.

Labrador. Early in the program, we noticed Abby and Inglis

moving a little awkwardly together—they just weren’t in

sync—one seemed to be traveling north while the other was

going south. But in no time, they were buzzing around looking

like determined cohorts as they tried to complete all of the

“tasks” on the list for that day. By the time they got to the bag-

carry relay race, they knocked our socks off as they flew down

the training center carrying that bag! They’ve headed home to

California where they have a multitude of hobbies including

sewing, knitting, crocheting, and artwork. They’ll be busy

with activities at the synagogue and taking Abby’s daily walk,

which can now be done more safely. Inglis will become a very

educated dog, as Abby is committed to learning: she currently

has many degrees, including a Masters degree in Art and a

Masters in Social Work. Life for Inglis is not going to be boring!

MARIANNE AND MICKEYPuppy Breeder and Donor—CPL

Stud Donor—Ms. MargaretUlmer

Puppy Namer—Mrs. JamisaGittings

Puppy Home—StateCorrectional Institution,Smithfield

Veterinary Sponsor—MetzgerAnimal Hospital

Marianne is the woman of a million questions. Seizures

can cause many memory and cognitive issues, and a fear

of forgetting something that is important. What is great

about this is that Marianne’s questions led to many learning

opportunities for the entire class. To guide her through the

huge quantity of information in Team Training, Marianne

organized a monthly calendar with all of her “Mickey re-

sponsibilities.” We like it so much that we plan to give it

to all future recipients as a guide. Thank you, Marianne!

Marianne recently moved out of her parents’ home to live on

her own—a huge step for someone who has seizures and lives

with the fear of getting seriously hurt and being alone. Mickey

has learned to sit close so that Marianne can rub his ears;

the action has a calming effect on her—it can actually reduce

the seizure activity and help her to focus. Marianne enjoys

writing, most recently poetry, and is active with a variety of

community organizations, so she and Mickey will be traveling

on Philadelphia’s public transportation frequently. We look

forward to watching these two partners grow together!

JOSEPH AND AMIGOPuppy Breeder and Donor—Mrs. Bonnie Bilski

Puppy Namer—Ms. PamelaMorgan

Puppy Home—StateCorrectional Institution, Albion

Veterinary Sponsor—AlbionAnimal Center, Inc.

Joe plowed through Team Training with “Come on, Amigo—

come on, buddy!” ringing in our ears. Now, Amigo did more

than his fair share of testing his new dad. . . but Joe is so

incredibly patient. He doesn’t give up—he just kept working

through a task—petting, motivating, and praising his dog for

even the smallest accomplishments. Joe had to work to

develop his praise voice—it’s that higher-pitch voice that gets

a dog excited to work and learn. On the day that we practiced

it, Joe found his praise voice by using the word “Corona”—

hmmm, do you suppose that has anything to do with his

goal of having his dog get him a beer from the fridge? Joe

is looking forward to having Amigo motivate him to get

out and do more. We’re pretty sure that Amigo is going

to be quite a “chick magnet,” so that goal should be easy to

achieve! They’ll spend lots of time at ball games—baseball

games, football games—you name it—they’re ready to go!

Joe, let Amigo keep you laughing and sharing that really

great smile—we want the two of you to make the most of

all that life has to offer!

Puppy Namer—Ms. Diane B. Jones

Home Companion Home—State Correctional Institution,Muncy and Mrs. MargaretWhite

Sally is a natural dog lover,

having had Labs and German Shepherds all of her life, but

following her stroke she realized that she would no longer

be able to train a dog herself. So she applied to CPL’s home

companion dog program for a partner who was extremely

gentle, well-trained, and patient. Ida was looking for a

person to love—a person who would find joy by petting her

soft ears and speaking with soft words. Sally and Ida are

forming a bond with trust and consistency. Sally has taught

Ida to lift her paw to shake using treats, and Ida has taken

this skill to a whole new level. At first, she would lift her

paw—shifting all of her weight to the other three legs and

almost tipping over. Now she runs to Sally with her paw

already raised! It’s great to see such a friendship forming.

When Robert applied for a home companion dog, he had

just lost his dachshund “Greta,” and he really missed the

canine companionship she had given him. At the interview,

Robert told us he needed a dog to give him purpose. Robert

and Patch bonded almost immediately. The family tells

us that Robert is so happy and has lost 20 lbs. from the

activity of having a dog. Patch has broken down barriers

between Robert and the other residents at the assisted

living facility. Patch gives Robert something positive to

share with other people. His family says he is happier,

healthier, and more social thanks to Patch.

Paul’s parents hoped that the companionship that a dog

could offer would help to redirect Paul when he becomes

anxious. Paul’s allergies require his companion to be a

poodle (a breed which does not tend to trigger allergic

reactions), and his need for extra-sensory stimulation

meant that he needed a dog that would enjoy lots of

petting and cuddling. Caper was happy to fit the bill.

Paul has learned to take Caper for walks. When they go

on car rides, Paul’s dad loves to see Caper leaned up

against Paul providing that deep pressure that is so help-

ful to Paul. This team is working hard and creating a very

special partnership.

Often with children who have autism or autism-related

disorders, it is the parents who first realize the benefits

that a well-trained companion might provide to their child.

The addition of a home companion dog can, in fact, help

the entire family, providing an outlet for stress reduction,

productive activity, and bonding. This was the case with

J.D., whose parents have explored and taken advantage of

a wide variety of therapies and services to help J.D. grow

and develop socially and emotionally. Smitty was matched

with J.D. because of his loving and calm personality. J.D.

has learned to feed and groom Smitty, and they both

enjoy a good game of ball. When J.D. is sitting on the floor

reflecting quietly, Smitty lies quietly beside him. . . probably

reflecting, too! They are a great team.

Brandon is an outdoorsy, dirt-truck, construction-truck kind

of guy who just loves to be with people and to be out and

about doing things. Unfortunately, sometimes his difficulty

with communication makes it difficult to create friendships.

Luckily, Brandon just loves dogs and is happiest when there’s

a dog next to him that he can pet. Enter Gulliver, who also

loves to be outdoors and also thinks that things like dirt and

construction are great fun. The great thing about having

a dog for a partner is that it encourages interaction with

people and friendships can form. Gulliver is a great friend

and companion to Brandon. They have added to each

others’ lives in a very positive way.

MEGAN AND ELVISPuppy Breeder and Donor—CPL

Puppy Namer—LeonThompson and family

Puppy Home—StateCorrectional Institution,Smithfield

Home Companion Home—The Fertig Family

Veterinary Sponsor—StateCollege Veterinary Hospital

Megan recently came back to us for a successor dog.

She had been partnered with Tara, her original home

companion dog, for more than 10 years. These were big

paw prints to fill. Megan’s parents told us at the interview

that she had lost her “spark” since she lost Tara. The loss

of a partner and friend who has made such a difference

in someone’s life can be devastating. The family felt that

adding another dog would renew Megan’s excitement and

make the house feel “homey” again. Megan felt that if she

got another dog, it would make her want to get outside and

walk around again in addition to alleviating the feelings of

loneliness she often had since the loss of Tara. Elvis is just

what Megan needed to help her enjoy the happiness that

comes from having a canine partner. He is a sweet and

gentle dog who provides the companionship that is so

important to Megan’s life.

ANNA AND BAYLEEPuppy Breeder—Ms. SandyReynolds

Puppy Donor and Namer—Mrs. Joan Rector

Home Companion Home—The Fertig Family

Anna came to us frustrated

because she frequently had

nothing to do when the other

kids in the neighborhood were outside playing basketball,

riding bikes, and doing other activities. She adores dogs, so

everyone agreed that a well-trained partner would provide

her with outdoor activities and would help other kids

connect with Anna. Baylee is such a sweet soul. He had

been a service dog for several years before returning to

CPL when his former recipient needed to move into a

nursing home. Baylee has skills that Anna can use like

retrieving dropped things, but most importantly, Baylee

has a heart of gold. He enjoys having a person of his own to

love and comfort. These two enjoy each other’s company

and both have a real zest for life.

John returned to CPL for a successor dog after he lost his

last home companion dog, Jake, to bone cancer. When

sharing his need for another companion, John said, “I am

lost without him. He kept me company, he loved me, and I

didn’t realize how much I needed him until he was gone.”

That kind of loneliness brings a pain that can only be filled

by the unconditional love that a dog provides. Belle is a

gentle and loving match for John. They enjoy a fairly quiet

life with family, friends, daily walks, and computer time.

They work in John’s workshop and the garden. John is

learning that life with a younger dog can be a challenge,

but he is working hard at training to ensure that he and

Belle are a success.

4

Home Companion

Teams CPL places home companion dogs with individuals who would benefit from a well-trained companion to bring

comfort, encouragement, and joy—but who would have difficulty raising and training a dog on their own. The job of

a home companion dog is extremely special: by providing a kiss, an adoring look, or a wag of the tail, they can make

lonely moments seem full, painful moments seem bearable, and uncertain times seem hopeful. They take their jobs

seriously, knowing that they make a difference in the lives of their human partners that cannot be measured.

puppy by herself due to physical challenges, there

doesn’t seem to be an option to have a dog. Martha

has had dogs all of her life—everything from a Basset

Hound to a St. Bernard. And so, Needle entered her

life—a gentle guy who loves to be petted. He shares

her days and activities, helping to provide structure

and a few good laughs. They’ve grown together since

their placement, attending obedience classes, going

to the lake to swim with friends, and helping Martha

have the motivation to get out of bed in the morning

and feel the joy that comes from having someone to

share your day.

and that he enjoyed being outside more than in.

Belvedere has become Michael’s companion and best

friend. The family describes Belvedere as a “gem” and

a gentle and sweet soul. He follows Michael up the

stairs every night and sleeps at the foot of his bed.

When Michael takes a bath, Belvedere stays next to

the tub. In the car, Belvedere puts his head in Mike’s

doing better in school, his behavior has improved, and

everyone feels that Belvedere has made Mike a happier

It took very little time for Huston to change Avery’s life.

Although Avery is quite limited by what she can

do or see, her parents had observed that she got a great

deal of pleasure from touching and interacting with

dogs and other animals. CPL chose Huston for

her because he is large, gentle, and easy for Avery

to see as he moves about. He motivates Avery to

move about with him. When she is in her walker

and sees Huston, she lights up and walks right over

to him. Huston will put a ball on Avery’s walker tray,

and she does her best to throw it a short distance

for him and then he brings it back to her, which

makes her very happy. It’s great therapy for Avery

to caress his soft fur. He is making her life a full and

rewarding one.

Bobby’s mom sent this email, which says it all:

First, we have a group of neighbors on our block with

whom we are very close. They’ve known Bobby all of his

life. Everyone was so excited when we were matched

with Ardo. He has become our neighborhood mascot,

with people often stopping in to say hi to him as much

as to the rest of us. When all the kids are outside

playing, Ardo is right there, watching and waiting for

someone to come pet or play a game of fetch with him.

Our retired police officer neighbor has even come over

and asked if Ardo can come out and play. Bottom line,

Ardo is loved by more than just the Valentine family.

You can only imagine the excitement and chatter on

the block when they learned that Ardo alerted us to a

seizure for the first time. It was about 4 in the

morning, and Ardo woke me by doing a whine with a

heavy sigh. Not only was I excited—I felt a huge relief

that maybe I can sleep and not have to stare at and

listen to Bobby’s monitors. If Ardo can wake me up, I

can still take care of Bobby. Everyone on the street who

saw Ardo the next day ran to congratulate him and pet

and hug and kiss him for being such a great dog.

Ardo loves the attention, but even with everyone

around him all the time, he still knows who he is

with us for. Bobby often cuddles up with him on

Ardo’s bed and will fall asleep there with him. After

we take Bobby to bed, Ardo knows that he gets

walked one last time, and he immediately goes up to

Bobby’s room to watch him sleep. We have a bed for

Ardo right next to Bobby’s bed, but sometimes, Ardo

will creep up onto Bobby’s bed and lay with him for

a bit. There have been times when I wake up in the

middle of the night and don’t see Bobby on his

monitor. When I go to check on him, he’s asleep in

Ardo’s bed instead of his own. The two of

them have bonded so well. We couldn’t have asked

for a better match.

In Honor of Lander, a CPL Home Companion dogBy Ethel Wohlhagen

We had German Shepherds for over 40 years. Our lives

were enriched by their love and companionship. When the

last one died, I said, “No more dogs.” I couldn’t stand the

pain of losing another dear member of our family. Well,

that changed. A friend’s wife volunteers at Canine Partners

For Life. Our friend told her about my husband’s dementia,

and she knew just the perfect Labrador retriever for him.

An interview was scheduled for my husband and me. After

we completed the home companion application, another

meeting was planned to meet our prospective companion.

We arrived at Canine Partners’ offices and waited for the

“puppy home family” who had trained this dog to be a

home companion, and in this time had grown to love him.

The door opened and a young woman, Chris, came in with a

handsome yellow Lab whose beautiful brown eyes melted

our hearts. We didn’t know how he would react, but he

came right to us. It was love at first sight. Lander’s puppy

home mother must have been having an inward struggle

parting with him; she mentioned having an appointment,

and we understood why she had to leave.

Lander was a part of our family. We lived in a farmhouse on

two acres in northern Delaware. It was a great place for

Lander to run and enjoy himself. Our three grown children

and our grandchildren came to welcome Lander (they are all

dog people—it runs in the family). He fit right in with our

lifestyle, and he knew all of his commands. This was our first

experience with a previously trained dog. We had always

had a puppy to train, but Lander was a mature 2-year-old.

Everyone loved him. His help to my husband was

immeasurable. My husband would take him for four or five

neighborhood walks every day, making many friends along

the way. They were often invited in for tea.

After we downsized and moved to a condo in Chadds Ford,

we became involved in a kennel club that the owners there

had set up. We arranged play dates for the dogs. This gave the

adults a chance to get acquainted, too. However, Lander never

forgot his duty to provide companionship for my husband.

We had five wonderful and happy years with Lander. I will

always treasure those memories. As time passed, health

matters dictated a different lifestyle for us. We moved to a

long-term healthcare facility. Our plan was to take Lander

with us, but I had an accident two days before we moved

and wasn’t able to take care of him. Canine Partners came

to my aid, as they did many years earlier, took Lander back,

and gave him to a little boy. I am told he did wonders with

this boy, giving all he had to give, bringing companionship

to another family in need of his love and protection.

Lander passed away in 2007. During his brief stay on earth,

he brought his guidance and a warm ray of sunshine to

three families, many other people whose lives he touched,

and his animal friends, too.

Well done, Lander!

passed away on September 14, 2010.]

A dedicated group of women inmates at the State Correctional

Institution at Cambridge Springs hand-stitched this twin-sized

quilt that will be donated to raise money for CPL. The Prison Puppy

Raising Program means the world to these women, because not

only do they share the joy and enthusiasm of their pups with other

inmates and staff members in the institution, but by training these

pups, they are providing the foundation of skills that will benefit

the final recipients of these remarkable dogs.

VETERINARYPUPPY SPONSORSThanks to the generosity of our puppy sponsor veterinarians, we are able to save money

on veterinary visits, procedures, and medications that we would otherwise have to raise

MAKING ADIFFERENCE

Canine Partners For Life needs help in many ways. If a monetary

donation simply isn’t possible, consider volunteering to provide

a home for one of our puppies. The folks mentioned below are doing

just that! Our current puppy homes range from private residences,

to veterinarians, to those living in correctional facilities. It’s fun

and it makes a difference! Below are dogs in the program as of

January 24, 2011.

2009–2010 ANNUAL REPORT

Given our worries about the economy during fiscal year 2009—2010, we are pleased with our overall

performance. Predictably, our funding from foundations and corporations was a good bit lower than

last year’s total, representing about 20% of total income (versus the 30% from last year). Special events fell

to 21% versus last year’s 26%. Associations remained the same at 2%. The real surprise, however, was with

individual donations, which far exceeded those of the previous year, representing 58% of the total versus

last year’s 43%. We have the readers of this newsletter to thank for that effort; we are so grateful to you

for your support!
