Confession and Food Trucks
Have you ever eaten food o a truck? I’m not talking about tailgating before a football game (even though I’ve never seen people eat o the back of a truck at a tailgating party) but food trucks.Food trucks are popular in city centers where they provide comfort food and gourmet takes on comfort foods, like a food truck in Philly that makes gourmet tater tots or another in Denver whose specialty is a grilled PB&J.
My rst experience of the food truck craze wasn’t in the US but in Mexico. During seminary I spent a summer in Mexico learning Spanish, and the culinary scene was visible at every street corner. When I visited the capital, Mexico City, some of the food vendors took the portability of the food truck to the next level. There were numerous “food bikes,” two or three-wheeled cycles with a hot potattached to the back for selling tamales, tacos, or ears of corn drenched in butter.
It was hard to resist! But I had no choice. Every tour guide told me that Americans can’t eat from the street vendors in Mexico, not because of any social norm but our bodies can’t handle thegerms from the lower cleaning standards. Oh well! Ironically, the one time I did eat from a food truck in Mexico was after I had been sick to my stomach. I had been sick in bed for a day or two at theCathedral where I was staying, and the pastor thought it was a good idea to test my stomach by taking me to a food truck. Maybe he thought I was actually homesick because we visited the most American food truck in town, a hamburger truck. That’s one meal I won’t forget, and I survived!
Some people react negatively to the cultural value behind food trucks – the desire for convenience. “Whatever happened to a nice sit-down with the family?” you may hear in conversationsaround our culture’s changing values. Now, I agree that our families would bene t by spending more time together, especially around the dinner table. In fact, there’s a priest, Fr. Leo, who speaks – orrather, cooks – around the country encouraging families to come together at the dinner table.
I believe grace can be shared even in a culture of convenience that seems to have left the faith behind. One example is Fr. Michael Champagne. This priest from Lafayette has a special ministry ofConfession which he o ers in a converted ambulance. I remember seeing Fr. Champagne’s “spiritual care unit” at the men’s conference in Baton Rouge. I was surprised by the response: people were liningup to go to Confession in the ambulance!
God’s grace is still active in a culture with changing values. I wonder what other creative ways we can bring our faith to the public square, attracting those in a culture of convenience to have anencounter with the living God.
