Importance of Communication
Since we began the new cluster Mass schedule in July, 2016, Fr. Brad and I have been helping out at other parishes in the diocese. There is definitely a need: in the last 2 months alone, two pastors were asked to step down due to health reasons. This means that two parishes that had two priests assigned to them are down to one priest to cover the vacancies. One of those parishes is the student center at LSU which serves the 15,000+ students who identify as Catholic at the university. Fr. Andrew Merrick is now the sole priest on campus.
These changes mean our help is requested more and more at other parishes in the diocese. Because of our new Mass schedule, we are able to offer that assistance. The coordination of priests helping with Masses around the diocese can get confusing as I found out one Sunday. I drove into Baton Rouge to celebrate a Mass in Spanish, and I was greeted in the sacristy by Fr. John Carville. Fr. Carville was my pastor in Baton Rouge for many years, so I was happy to see him. It turns out that we were both asked to celebrate the Mass for that day, so I was not happy that I drove into town to make this discovery. This scheduling mistake gave me a reminder in the importance of communication.
This is why I wrote last weekend that I want to hear from committee leadership in the cluster. If you recently led or are actively leading a committee at one of the parishes in the cluster, please contact one of the following members of the Advisory Council. I’m looking for basic information from committee leadership: How many members do you have? When was the last meeting? Is the committee still active? Here are the representatives to contact:
St. James Louis Landry 225 806-4650 [email protected]
Our Lady of Peace Pap Folse 225 265-2283 [email protected]
St Philip Joycia Banner 225 206-0257 [email protected]
Again, here is the full list of Advisory Council membership. St James: Cynthia Clifton, Rodney Johnson, Louis Landry, Sandra Lewis, Audrey Oubre, Patrick Zeringue
Our Lady of Peace: Mark Dumas, Michelle Faucheux, Pap Folse, Jackie Harry, Shawane Keller, Bernard Labat
St Philip: Joycia Banner, Cody Fletcher, Eva Knight, Jude Gravois, Michael Scorsone, Devona Steib.

White Ribbons Against Pornography Pornography is a social toxin that destroys relationships, steals innocence, erodes compassion, breeds violence, and kills love. The issue of pornography is ground zero for all those concerned for the sexual health of our loved ones, communities, and society as a whole. When you entered Mass this morning a member of the Catholic Daughters presented you with a white ribbon. Wear your ribbon proudly declaring that you are against pornography and all forms of sexual exploitation.
Needs of Real Consequence Invite a Community’s Response Through the Bishop’s Annual Appeal, Bishop Michael G. Duca continues
decades of ministry support in the Diocese of Baton Rouge, connecting generous parishioners and worthy diocesan programs that directly serve those in need. Such a vast effort invites a commitment on the part of many, blessing thousands of our neighbors and friends, as we follow the example of Jesus Christ in search of the hurting and the lost. Together, we Follow the Shepherd’s Lead, and respectfully ask you to do your part. “What man among you, having a hundred sheep and losing one of them would not leave the ninety-nine in the desert and go after the one until he finds it?” (Lk 15:4)?
This year, to honor the arrival of our new spiritual shepherd, you may decide to increase your gift in support of the BAA. With a gift of at least $500, become a member of The Crosier Society. Consider membership in the Bishop Ott Society with a gift totaling $1,000 or more. Or, with a generous gift of at least $5,000, become a charter member of The Shepherd’s Society.
As you pray about your participation, the detailed information Bishop Duca recently sent to you will help answer your questions and refine your decisions. If you’ve yet to receive your packet, please email the Office of Stewardship, [email protected], or call (225) 336-8790. We will make sure you receive this year’s BAA information right away. Visit www.baabr.org, and discover the ways you and your fellow Catholic parishioners serve others and meet needs. As a Catholic Church, we help fund vital work throughout the capital region.
The Hope And Promise of Redemption The prophet Jeremiah prophesies the end of the Babylonian exile. He describes how the weak and sorrowful people now return with joy. These are the scattered people of God: the blind and the lame, the mothers and pregnant women. They shall be led along an easy road so that no one will
stumble. The Lord's kindness and mercy are on all these weak and broken people. Here and in Psalm 126 we find the most lovely poetic images of God's love and care for us. "Those that sow in tears / shall reap rejoicing. Although they go forth weeping, / carrying the seed to be sown, / they shall come back rejoicing, / carrying their sheaves" (Psalm 126:5-6). Although God had to punish Israel for their many sins, God never forgot them, scattered as they were, and brings them all back to the land of
their ancestors, there to flourish and be joyful again. We can see in this the hope and the promise of our own redemption, gathered from the far corners of the earth into the great banquet of God.
