Family Vacation

Thank you for the prayers for safe travels as I took my family vacation earlier this month. As I’ve mentioned before, I have a sister who lives with her family up in New Hampshire. For the past severalyears, I have visited her once a year. I get to see my three nieces (the oldest is 11 years old), and while they’re at school I spend the day on my own. Here are some reflections about the trip and the pastweek.

Snow time. I typically don’t like cold weather. So why do I visit in the coldest month? I like to travel up north in the winter because this is my one chance to see some snow. My sister loves to cross country ski with her kids, and during the day when they’re at school and work, I find a local hill to go down on a snowboard.

The fact is, I enjoy the snow activities more than I dislike cold weather. Ironically, I’m more comfortable outdoors doing these activities than I was indoors. When I was outside, I had layers andgloves and hats and thick jackets. I was warm even in freezing temperatures. Compare that to my sister’s house where the thermostat was set to 60 degrees. I wasn’t moving as much indoors, so I would frequently wear the same warm cap I wore outside.

Growing up. Because they live so far away, I only get to see my sister’s family a few times a year. I’m surprised at the changes in the kids who are growing up so fast. One change is that the “teen” switch suddenly got flipped with my 11-year old niece. Even though I recently saw her at Thanksgiving, I noticed she was a lot more quiet this time. Her answers to my questions were as short as possible:“good”, “fine”, “yeah.” She spent a lot of time in her room. Even though she doesn’t have her own cell phone, when she got an adult’s phone, there was no way I could compete with whatever app she wasglued to. She’s the oldest niece in the family, so I’m reminded of those changes I’ll be seeing in my other nieces and nephews as well.

Nothing but NET. I also wanted to comment on our youth retreat we had last weekend. I was very pleased to see so many of our young people participate. We had a good showing! This is the first timeI’ve witnessed a retreat put on my NET ministries. The retreat was lead by 11 young adults in their 20’s who dedicate a year or so for these retreats. They were a very cheery group. One of the missionaries shared why he joined NET ministries. He said, “When I was younger, I went on a NET retreat. I was so surprised by the joy of the NET team that I told myself, ‘I want what they have’.” I pray that our youth would be open to sharing the joy of the Lord in this or some other way. You can find out more about them at www.netusa.org.

Peace,Fr. Matthew

Choice “If you choose you can keep the commandments,” Sirach tells us. God “has set before you fire and water; to whichever you choose, stretch forth your hand” (Sirach 15:15, 16). This is a great mystery: God does not control us so completely that we cannot choose our own path. We have certain boundaries, of course, but no one but we can choose our way within those boundaries. In today’s reading from Matthew’s Gospel, Jesus reminds us of our freedom and our responsibility for our lives. He calls us to look beyond the words of the commandments, all the way to their meaning. Look beyond the adultery to the selfishness that poisons our love. Look beyond the murder to the anger that eats away at our compassion. Look beyond the perjured testimony to the lies and deception that drive our behavior. Our vocation is to choose life for ourselves, and to choose a path through our part of the world that helps make life possible and more abundant for others as well.
