Canderel tablets are available in dispensers in several sizes. One tablet is equivalent to one teaspoonful of sugar, but it contains about 50 times less calorie: one tablet of Canderel = 1/3 of a Calorie, compared to 1 teaspoon of sugar = 16 Calories.

ABOUT OUR

INGREDIENTS

Canderel low calorie sweetener is made using a unique blend of ingredients that tastes delicious. Aspartame and Acesulfame - K are the main sweetening ingredients in Canderel tablets & Granules. These sweeteners are approximately 200 times sweeter than sugar. Only a small amount is needed to achieve the same sweetness as sugar, but with a lot fewer calories.

Aspartame consists of two amino acids- which are linked together to produce a pleasant sweet taste - aspartic acid and phenylalanine, found in a very wide range of other foods containing protein such as meat, fish, eggs and dairy products, and a small amount of methanol. Methanol is a natural component of many foods and beverages, including many fruits and vegetables. The body digests the components of aspartame in exactly the same way it digests these components from natural food sources. Aspartame has been used to sweeten food and drinks for more than 25 years and is one of the most thoroughly researched ingredients.

Acesulfame K is a white odourless powder. It has been tested extensively before being approved by the regulatory authorities in more than 70 countries throughout the world including the FSA – UK Food Standards Agency.

Additional ingredients are added to Canderel to make the very concentrated sweetener easier to dissolve and enhance the flavour of the food and drink. All ingredients are approved food additives that can be safely added to food and beverages.

Maltodextrin, the bulking agent used in Canderel Granules is an easily digested carbohydrate made from corn starch which is gluten free.

The EU Scientific Committee for Food has set an Acceptable Daily Intake (ADI) for acesulfame-K of 9mg/kg of body weight/day and 40mg/kg/day for aspartame. For an adult weighing 60kgs, the intake of Canderel tablets needed to reach the ADI would be more than 95 tablets - every day throughout your life!

Canderel Side Effects

I want to do this!Canderel is a brand name of an artificial sweetener containing aspartame, and is

the leading artificial sweetener in France and the United Kingdom. Canderel's parent company,

Merisant, also markets the similar sweeteners Equal and Nutrasweet in different parts of the world

including the United States.

Canderel has only a few calories per gram, and is much sweeter than sugar, making it an ideal

sweetener for diet foods and drinks.

Use

1. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has recommended an acceptable daily intake of 50mg/kg of body weight, which is over 4,000 mg per day for a 180 lb. man. There are 180 mg of aspartame in a 12 oz. can of diet soda; it would take over 22 cans to reach the acceptable daily intake.

Canderel is often used by diabetics, because it has no effect on blood sugar or insulin production. Canderel has less bulk than sugar, which could have a detrimental effect on jellies or jams made with the artificial sweetener.

Effects

2. The only notable side effect of Canderel is a slightly bitter aftertaste reported anecdotally by some people. Headaches are often claimed as a side effect, but controlled studies have ruled out aspartame as a headache cause.

Canderel breaks down quickly in the body, forming phenylalanine, methanol, and aspartic acid. Other foods, such as fruits, vegetables, and meat also break down into these compounds in comparable amounts and no harmful side effects have been noted.

Considerations

3. By itself, Canderel has almost no nutritional value. However, Canderel is always combined with other ingredients before ingesting. Many people use Canderel as part of a weight loss strategy, but the effects of too many of any foods, including sugar-free ones, can still cause weight gain.

Canderel is also used as a sugar substitute by diabetics. While Canderel won't raise blood sugar levels, the other ingredients in foods made with Canderel may affect blood glucose and insulin levels

Controversy

4. Spurious Internet warnings and chain emails claim that side effects of aspartame include neurotoxicity, seizures, birth defects, cancer, multiple sclerosis, brain damage and more. These claims have largely been debunked by well respected scientists and government officials. The Food and Drug Administration, charged with monitoring food additive safety, calls "aspartame, sold under trade names such as NutraSweet and Equal, one of the most thoroughly tested and studied food additives the agency has ever approved."

Warnings

5. Canderal metabolizes into the amino acid phenylalanine and should not be eaten by anyone with the metabolic disorder phenylketonuria (PKU). Excessive phenylalanine can also cross the placenta and affect a developing fetus. Because of this, the FDA requires all foods

Page 9: Canderel

containing Canderel to carry a phenylalanine warning label. Canderel, however, has been declared safe for pregnant women to use.

Obesity is one of the biggest health challenges we face in the UK today - the prevalence of type 2 diabetes is several times higher in obese adults than in normal-weight individuals as is the risk of heart disease and stroke. The potential impact of three million diabetes sufferers on NHS resources means that obesity has become the main the focus of the government’s health agenda.

Both the government and healthcare professionals have recognised that excessive sugar consumption is one of the main causes of this epidemic and that there is a desperate need to reduce the sugar content in foods and overall levels of sugar consumption.

Primary care plays a key role in the management of overweight and diabetic patients: it is in an ideal position to educate individuals about the dangers of obesity, and provide them with information and guidance on a good nutrition.

Low calorie sweeteners, such as Canderel®, can be used in place of sugar to help keep weight under control, as they contain fewer calories and carbohydrates, and have a greater sweetening strength compared with sugar. They are useful in a calorie-controlled diet as well in the management of diabetes, as they do not affect the sugar levels in the body.

Page 10: Canderel

Switching to a low calorie sweetener can have a significant impact on patients' daily calorie intake - Canderel contains less than a third of a calorie per tablet and less than two calories per teaspoon, whereas a teaspoon of sugar contains 20 calories.

Canderel is working to raise awareness of the problem of obesity and the role of low calorie sweeteners in a reduced-calorie diet. It has joined forces with the National Obesity Forum as well as Diabetes UK and has also worked to encourage additional cooperation between the government, health professionals, and the voluntary and private sectors in their work to tackle the rise of obesity in the UK.
