WCC Cancer Connection
Cancer Connection’s
Guide Through Diagnosis,
Treatment and Recovery
Providing
a list of
resources for
patients and their
support
network
WCC Cancer Connection 2
This is often one of the first questions a newly-diagnosed patient will ask and
this guide was developed by cancer survivors to help you, your family and
friends answer that question.
We have endeavored to provide a comprehensive list of resources. We offer
you fellowship with cancer survivors and others who have walked this journey.
Hopefully you may experience the support and genuine love shared by others
who have walked this journey.
We invite you attend a Woods Chapel Church (WCC) Cancer Connection meeting
or event. We are a ministry of hope to all affected by cancer. We are here
to help you just let us know how.
Thanks to all the survivors and supporters who
provided information for this resource guide!

OUR CANCER MINISTRY
The WCC Cancer Ministry provides hope, support and love to cancer patients,
their families and friends through a Cancer Connection Group, Survivors Network
and Cancer Center Team.
Cancer Connection
The WCC Cancer Connection is a networking system that assists in sustaining the
diagnosed person, as well as their family members and friends, with prayers,
personal contact, cards, phone calls, flowers, food, transportation - or whatever
the situation requires.
It is a method of "connecting" with the patient, family and extended family during
difficult times. We connect people with others who have had similar cancer
related experiences (when requested).
The Cancer Connection offers information and resources when questions arise.
Or, we strive to assist in finding an answer. The motto of the group is to "Expect
Miracles" and to offer hope to all who are affected!
Contact Jonnie Wells, [email protected]
Cancer Survivor Network
The WCC Cancer Survivor Network is a listing of WCC congregation members who
have survived cancer. The listing provides an opportunity to share information
about planned activities including the June National Cancer Survivor celebration.
It is also an opportunity for participants to be part of the networking system to
sustain one another and others if they choose or ask for assistance.

ON THE WINGS OF HOPE
As an ancient legend goes:
If anyone desires a wish to come true
They must capture a butterfly and whisper that wish to it.
Since butterflies make no sound,
They can’t tell that wish to anyone but the Great Spirit.
So by making the wish and releasing the butterfly,
It will be taken to the heavens and be granted.
Although this legend implies that we should keep our wishes silent,
There some wishes that need to be expressed out loud.
To those that have been touched by the disease we are helping to fight today.
We wish the caregivers strength and tranquility
And thank them for their gifted labor of love.
We wish the survivors a long and happy life,
And thank them for showing us how to fight with courage and determination.
We wish those currently fighting the battle energy and hope,
And thank them for showing us what true bravery is all about.
And finally, we wish the victims peace and love,
And thank them for the joy and happiness they brought to us.
With this symbolic gesture, we honor those that have left us and encourage.
Those left behind to continue the fight ―On the Wings of Hope.‖

GARDEN of HOPE
The Garden of Hope is located along the WCC
Walking Trail, on the north side of Daffodil Hill
and the pond. In the Garden of Hope stands a
solitary signal for all to see – a signal waiting to
herald the sound of celebration loud and clear,
the Miracle Bell. The Miracle Bell is a special
gift from Larry Stewart, better known around
the world as Secret Santa. The Miracle Bell is
intended to be rung in celebration when a cancer survivor reaches any point of
treatment worthy of celebrating. The locale of the garden allows the ringing of
the Miracle Bell to be a private celebration by an individual or to be shared with
family and friends at any point of celebration. You are invited to ring the bell in
celebration!
The garden also features plants designed to draw and
sustain butterflies, which are symbolic of the ever-
changing cycle of life and beauty--an affirmation that
life goes on. The Garden of Hope was designed and is
being cared for by two WCC cancer survivors.
Patients, family, friends and staff are welcome to
enjoy the Garden of Hope and ring the Miracle Bell in
celebration!
MESSENGER OF GOD
Oh, Little Butterfly,
Messenger of God.
When I see you in the sky
I cannot help but nod.
You bring me respite
From grief and despair.
Every time I see you
Sailing through the air.
You renew my faith in all
God’s wondrous plan.
And I know it’s all in FAITH,
Not in what I understand.

The Cold Weather Rule period begins November 1 and remains in effect through

HEALTH CARE TIPS AND RESOURCES
DENTAL CARE
Talk with your dentist before you start chemotherapy. You may want your
teeth cleaned PRIOR to treatment as you are not able to have any dental
work done during chemotherapy. The dentist may want you to use special
toothpaste. Avoid dental work. Always consult your oncologist.
Keep mouth or dentures clean. Use a soft toothbrush. If still painful, use
foam toothettes. These are available in most pharmacies.
Rinse and gargle at least four times daily to keep your mouth clean. You can
try a solution of one teaspoon of baking soda and one teaspoon of salt to a
quart of water. This must be mixed daily or it can be a source of harmful
bacteria.

HAIR/SCALP CARE
Don’t bleach or color your hair and don’t get a permanent.
Sleep on satin pillowcase to prevent hair friction.
Don’t use hair dryers, hot roller or curling irons. This may damage hair and
make hair loss more severe.
Use soft-bristle brush and a gentle Ph-balanced shampoo.
WCC Cancer Connection 62
LYMPHEDEMA CARE
For women who have had lymph nodes removed, ask your doctor about wearing a
compression sleeve on arm of affected side, particularly if you are going on a plane
trip or trip to higher altitude, such as Colorado, to help prevent lymphedema.
After arriving, keep sleeve on for couple hours to help acclimate to the altitude.

cancer treatment or have cancer-related medical needs.

PERSONAL HYGENE
Perform excellent daily personal hygiene.
Wash hands frequently.
Use alcohol-free mouthwash.
Do not pick cuticles.
Use deodorant not antiperspirant. Antiperspirants block sweat glands and
may promote infection.
If menstruating, use sanitary pad rather than tampons to prevent infection.
Do not use dental floss.
Keep lips moist with K-Y Jelly or Chap Stick. DO NOT use Vaseline because
the petroleum base may cause infection.
Avoid situations that will increase your chance of getting an infection.
Avoid crowds.
Don’t use public transportation.
Stay away from people with colds.
WCC Cancer Connection 63
PERSONALITY
Don’t compare your life to others. Each person’s journey is different.
Don’t have negative thoughts about things you cannot control.
Invest your energy in the positive present moment.
Don’t overdo. Keep your limits.
Don’t take yourself so seriously. No one else does.
Don’t waste your precious energy on gossip.
Dream more while you are awake.
Envy is a waste of time. You already have all you need.
Forget issues of the past. Don’t remind your partner of his/her mistakes of
the past. That will ruin your present happiness.
Life is too short to waste time hating anyone. Don’t hate others.
Make peace with your past so it won't spoil the present.
No one is in charge of your happiness except you.
Realize that life is a school and you are here to learn. Problems are simply
part of the curriculum that appear and fade away. Each lesson you learn will
last a lifetime.
Smile and laugh more.
You don’t have to win every argument.
Agree to disagree.
SKIN CARE DURING RADIATION
Several retailers carry special gels recommended for application after each
radiation treatment. Ask your radiation oncologist about using a store brand of
aloe vera such as; Fruit of the Earth 100% Pure Aloe Vera at Walmart, for skin
care (dry skin).
SOCIAL
Call your family often.
Each day give something good to others.
Forgive everyone for everything.
Spend time with other people.

TYPES OF TREATMENT & SIDE EFFECTS
BONE MARROW AND STEM CELL TRANSPLANTATION
Bone and marrow transplantation is a medical (not surgical) procedure, lasting weeks
to months from start to finish in which diseased marrow (a spongy, fatty tissue found
on the inside of larger bones) or immune system is replaced by a healthier one. For
people with cancer, the goal is to destroy every cancer cell.
CANCER MEDICATION
Contact your medical team as some pain medications can cause constipation and
eventually blockage of the digestive track if not treated.
CHEMOTHERAPY
Chemotherapy is the use of drugs that kill cancer cells. Systemic chemotherapy is
delivered through the blood stream. This targets cancer cells throughout the body.
Newer chemotherapy drugs produce fewer and less severe side effects. There are
also drugs for reducing the side effects of chemotherapy. Generic side effects from
chemotherapy listed below, depends on type of drugs, dosage and your body’s reaction
to the medication.
Fatigue Pain
Nausea and vomiting
Hair loss
Anemia
Change in mood, confusion or
depression
Infections due to a weakened
immune system
Blood-clotting effects (unexpected
bruising, red spots under skin,
reddish urine or black or bloody
stools)
Diarrhea or constipation
Nerve and muscle effects
Mouth and throat problems, such
as mouth sores
Minor skin problems
Nail problems
Kidney and bladder effects
Flu-like symptoms
Temporary or permanent
infertility in men
Irregular menstrual period or
cessation of menstruation in
women
Tingling or numbness in arms and
legs
WCC Cancer Connection 70
HORMONE THERAPY
Hormone therapy is used for cancers such as breast, prostate. reproductive systems
and thyroid. These cancers can grow and spread through the body’s natural hormones.
Hormone therapy fights cancer by changing the amount of hormones within the body.
IMMUNOTHERAPY (BIOLOGIC THERAPY)
Immunotherapy (Biologic Therapy) boosts the body’s natural defenses and helps fight
cancer. Immunotherapy uses material either made by the body or in a laboratory to
bolster, target and/or restore immune system function. This therapy may include
cancer vaccines (an investigational approach to help immune systems fight cancer).
The side effects of Immunotherapy generally include flu-like symptoms such as
chills, nausea and fever.
RADIATION THERAPY AND SIDE EFFECTS
Radiation therapy uses high-energy x-rays and other related particles to reduce and
kill cancer. The most common type of radiation is called ―external-beam radiation.‖
The beam is aimed from the outside of the body on the location of the cancer.
Radiation implants are called ―internal radiation therapy or brachy therapy.‖ The goal
of radiation therapy is to shrink cancer before surgery, eliminate cancer cells in other
parts of the body, to keep tumors from returning after surgery and to eliminate pain.
Below is a list of generic side effects depending on the type of treatment and site of
radiation therapy.
Any site - redness, dryness, itchiness and peeling of skin
Head and neck therapy - dryness in mouth, throat and loss of ability to
taste
Brain therapy – memory loss, decreased desire for sex or little tolerance
for cold weather
Chest therapy – shortness of breath, coughing or less tolerance for
exercise
Digestive track therapy may cause nausea, vomiting or diarrhea.
Testicle and pelvic area - loss of sperm production and erectile dysfunction
in men. Scarring or redness and tenderness in vagina for women.
WCC Cancer Connection 71
SURGERY
Surgery involves the removal of cancerous tissue from the body. Below are types of
cancer surgical procedures.
Surgical biopsies are for confirming and diagnosing cancer
Surgical removal of cancer to diagnosis and determine extent (called Staging)
Surgery for complete removal of cancer
Surgery for side effects of cancer (to remove obstructions and/or ease pain)
TARGETED THERAPY
Targeted therapy focuses on faulty genes or proteins that contribute to cancer
growth and development. Targeted therapy is usually done with other cancer
treatment such as chemotherapy.

A PRAYER FOR CANCER
Dearest Father, we pray to you on behalf of those who have been diagnosed with
cancer.
Although that word can strike fear into the heart of a human, we put our trust in
you. You are the mighty Lord and blessed Savior. In our time of need, we can
come to you and find rest. Touch the person that is sick and make them well.
Let theirs be a story that confounds the doctors.
Guide the doctors in their work. Let the work of researchers find a cure for this
disease. Even now, open the mind and eyes of those working in the clinics, that a
cure may be found.
Bless those family members and friends who stand beside those who are ill.
Comfort them and give them strength. Flood their hearts with grace that they
may minister to the sick around them. Open our heats that we can reach out in a
loving and compassionate way to those who need us.
In all things, blessed Lord, we trust in you. We ask for complete healing, but we
put our trust in you. No matter what, we are thankful that our souls find daily rest
in you and eternal rest in heaven. Bless your people and give them your peace that
passes understanding.
In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
