Annual Report2017
2 Cancer Treatment Centers of America® at Western Regional Medical Center
At Cancer Treatment Centers of America® (CTCA) at Western Regional Medical Center (Western), the patient is at the center of everything we do. That has remained unchanged this past year as we have continued to acquire compassionate and strong clinical talent, further enhance service line offerings for our patients and commit to an unparalleled level of high-quality and safe care to everyone who walks through our doors.
Over the course of the past year, our hospital has been able to add several physicians to our medical staff that have unique talents, strong passions and a renowned sense of doing what is truly best for our patients. Specifically, we have been able to expand our surgical offerings due to several physicians coming on board including Dr. Farshid Sadeghi, Dr. Derrick Beech, Dr. Diego Muilenburg, Dr. Raquel Prati and Dr. Natalie Godbee. Each of these doctors brings something unique to the table and, in turn, something unique to each patient who seeks care with us.
We also launched the Advanced Surgical Recovery (ASURE™) Program this past year. This program is a standardized, multimodal care pathway that is designed to reduce patients’ stress responses to surgery, maintain normal physiologic parameters and accelerate return to normal daily activities. Within the first four months of launching this program, 17 patients went through this pathway. In turn, those patients were able to go home sooner after surgery and reduce the use of narcotics for pain management.
I am also pleased to share that at the conclusion of our fiscal year, our Press Ganey scores were unprecedented for Western. In the Outpatient Clinic setting, we received an average score of 95.6, while in the Inpatient setting 94.7 percent of our patients indicated they would recommend us to family and friends. These numbers truly speak to the incredible care that our clinicians and physicians are providing to our patients.
In this 2017 report, you will learn more about our new physicians, the patients in our care, and the awards and accreditations we were fortunate to receive. As I reflect on this year, I am even more excited for our path forward.
Sincerely,
Matt McGuire President and CEO Cancer Treatment Centers of America at Western Regional Medical Center

CANCER REGISTRY Report
The Western Cancer Registry
maintains a data system
designed for the collection,
management and analysis of
data on individuals diagnosed
with cancer. The Cancer
Registry has entered more than
5,235 cases into the database
since its reference year, 2011.
During 2016, 1,036 new cases were accessioned into the Cancer Registry database. Of these cases, 549 cases were analytic and 487 were non-analytic. “Analytic” patients are those who are diagnosed and/or receive all or part of their first course of cancer treatment at CTCA®. “Non-analytic” patients are those who receive subsequent cancer treatment at CTCA due to progressive or recurrent disease. There were 442 male patients and 594 female patients. Western accessioned patients from 48 states (including one international), with the largest portion of patients residing in Arizona.
The American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer mandates that “A 90 percent follow-up rate is maintained for all analytic patients diagnosed within the last five years, or from the cancer registry reference date, whichever is shorter. A successful follow-up rate of 80 percent must be maintained on all analytic patients from the cancer registry’s reference date.” The Western Cancer Registry reference year is 2011. Western has exceeded this specified follow-up standard with a 90 percent follow-up rate.
The Cancer Registry staff performs the daily functions of the Tumor Registry and ensures data accuracy with continuous quality improvement reviews by Cancer Committee physicians. The Registry provides the Cancer Committee with information from which analysis of patient outcomes and evidence-informed clinical decision making can be performed.

2017 CANCER CONFERENCE Report
Weekly Cancer Conferences were held at at Western and attended by a multidisciplinary team including medical oncology, radiation oncology, radiology, pathology and surgery. The nursing and ancillary staff also attended these conferences to ensure comprehensive representation for each patient’s specific case.
Altogether, these oncology experts reviewed cases in detail and discussed stage, prognostic indicators, National Comprehensive Cancer Network Guidelines (NCCN), and plans for appropriate diagnostic studies, therapies and clinical trials. These prospective, patient-oriented and multidisciplinary physician care planning meetings provide free consultations to our patients and education for the medical and hospital staff. During 2016, there were 33 General Cancer Conferences, 43 Breast Cancer Conferences and 37 Lung Cancer Conferences.

Accreditations AND RECOGNITIONS
The Joint Commission Western received the Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval® for Hospital Accreditation. This accreditation decision is awarded to a health care organization that demonstrates satisfactory compliance with applicable Joint Commission standards in all performance areas.
National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers ReaccreditationIn 2016, Western was reaccredited by the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers (NAPBC) for its breast program. In 2013, Western became the first breast cancer center in the state of Arizona to receive this three-year, full accreditation. The NAPBC has established 27 standards that breast centers must meet to ensure all patients with breast disease receive the highest quality of care. The categories for these standards include breast center leadership, clinical management, research, community outreach, professional education and quality improvement.
Quality Oncology Practice Initiative RecertificationWestern is currently recognized as meeting the highest standards for quality cancer care by the Quality Oncology Practice Initiative (QOPI®) Certification Program, an affiliate of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO). The QOPI Certification Program provides a three-year certification for outpatient hematology-oncology practices. Western first received this accreditation in 2014 and was recertified in 2017. The QCP seal designates those practices that not only score high on the key QOPI quality measures, but also meet rigorous chemotherapy safety standards established by ASCO and the Oncology Nursing Society (ONS).
American College of Surgeons Commission on CancerWestern is currently accredited (June 2015 to June 2018) by the Commission on Cancer (CoC), a quality program of the American College of Surgeons (ACS), with the silver level commendation—the highest level of commendation possible for a new program. In addition, Western achieved commendation in Clinical Trial Accrual, Cancer Registrar Education, Public Reporting of Outcomes and Nursing Care.

Screening and Prevention PROGRAMS
Colon Cancer Screening and Prevention Project According to the American Cancer Society®, over the past ten years, colorectal cancer incidence rates have dropped by 30 percent in the United States among adults 50 and older. This drop is almost entirely attributed to screening and prevention. Yet colorectal cancer is the second-leading cause of cancer-related deaths in Arizona. Because of this, the Arizona Cancer Coalition and the Arizona Department of Health Services set a goal for the state of Arizona to have 80 percent of adults aged 50 and older screened for colorectal cancer by 2018.
In an effort to work toward this goal, Western partnered with several organizations within the Arizona community to host the first Latino Colon Cancer Screening and Prevention Project. The event, held in January 2016 at the Wesley Community and Health Center, educated more than 100 members of the community about colon cancer awareness and screening as well as nutrition guidelines for colon cancer prevention. Of the 126 individuals in attendance, 60 people were identified as needing a screening. Of those 60, 30 individuals received a fecal immunochemical test (FIT) kit and 12 received a colonoscopy. Of the 24 FIT tests that were returned, three identified positive results.
“Cardinals Against Cancer” Skin and Oral Cancer ScreeningIn an effort to raise awareness for both skin cancer and oral cancer, Western partnered with the Arizona Cardinals for a Cardinals Against Cancer event in Tempe, Arizona.
With 16 physicians, including dentists and dermatologists from various practices within the Phoenix community, 156 members of the community were screened for oral cancer while 383 members of the community were screened for skin cancer. Of the 156 oral cancer screenings, three people needed follow-up. Of the 383 skin cancer screening, 129 people needed follow-up.
Breast Cancer ScreeningsBreast cancer is the leading cancer among women in Arizona, according to the Arizona Department of Health Services. To assist women in getting the proper breast cancer screening and education, Western partnered with Golden Gate Community Center to provide two screening events in 2016. The first event was held in November and provided 38 mammograms, with no follow-ups needed. The second event was held in December and provided 38 mammograms, also with no follow-ups needed.
In addition to mammograms, women were provided educational materials about nutrition, breast health, colon health and sun safety.
