Royal Vancouver Yacht Club’s Sailing Programs are among the best in the country. We have taught Sail Canada’s (formerly the Canadian Yachting Association) CanSail since its implementation in 2012. > COURSE DESCRIPTIONS WET FEET (STRICTLY AGES 5-7) Wet Feet is a program designed to introduce kids to boats and water safety in a fun and safe environment. Age-specific activities introduce participants to topics including lifejacket safety and how to balance, sit and move in sailing dinghies. Your child will learn how to act safely around boats as well as have fun with arts, crafts, and beach play. Choose from morning (0900-1200 hrs) OR afternoon (1230-1530 hrs) sessions.

OPTIMIST FUN ~ ONE WEEK Prerequisite: none For sailors aged 8-12, Opti FUN is both a beginner sailing course for first-time seafarers as well as a class that continues to challenge young sailors who are all about having fun around the yacht club, on and off the water. The one-week course teaches the fundamentals of balance and steering, boat handling, and knot tying, but also provides more opportunities for game playing, park and beach field trips, swimming, and simply having a good time at the yacht club with friends. No manual required for Opti FUN. Class times: 0900-1530 hrs.

OPTIMIST INTERMEDIATE (CANSail 1 and 2) ~ TWO WEEKSPrerequisite: Optimist Level 1 (or Opti FUN)This two-week course is for sailors ages 9-13 with some experience and who have taken the Opti FUN course. In Opti INTERMEDIATE, sailors are now sailing by themselves and refining their skills in the Optimist dinghy with a focus on proficiency in gybing, tacking, and upwind and downwind sailing. Sailors have the opportunity to complete their CANSail 1 and 2 levels. It is recommended for sailors to take this course twice in order to achieve both levels. The course manual is Optimist Sailing ($12). Class times: 0900-1530 hrs.

OPTIMIST FAST (CANSail 3) ~ TWO WEEKSPrerequisite: Optimist Level 2 (INTERMEDIATE) or CANSail Basic For sailors aged 10-14 who have completed the Opti INTERMEDIATE course and achieved their CANSail 1 and 2 levels. This two-week course focuses on beginner and intermediate racing skills such as accelerating off a start line, tactical mark roundings, and strategy for getting around the race course. This course is ideal for sailors who are independent, want to learn the competitive side of sailing, and who wish to attain their CANSail 3 level. After successfully completing Opti FAST, sailors can repeat the course to refine their racing skills in the Optimist dinghy or they can progress directly to CANSail ADVANCED in the RS Feva XL dinghy. All sailors who participate in this course are invited to attend the end-of-summer Commodores’ Cup Regatta. Course manual is Optimist Racing ($12). Class times: 0900-1530 hrs.

CANSail BASIC (CANSail 1 & 2 - RS Feva XL) ~ TWO WEEKS Prerequisite: age 11+ For new and somewhat experienced sailors aged 11+. Over a two-week period, sailors will be introduced to a variety of basic and intermediate double-handed sailing skills in the RS Feva dinghy. CANSail BASIC follows the CANSail 1 and 2 course curriculum and sailors will have the ability to achieve these two sailing levels. It is recommended for sailors to take this course twice in order to achieve both levels. The course manual is BC Sailing CANSail 1 & 2 ($17.50). Class times: 0900-1530 hrs.

This two-week course emphasizes refined boat handling and introductory racing skills. This course also helps sailors develop a greater understanding of how a sailboat moves and how sails work. It is recommended for sailors to take this course twice in order to achieve both CANSail 3 and 4 sailing levels. Course manual is BC Sailing CANSail 3 & 4 ($17.50). Class times: 0900-1530 hrs.

SUMMER RACE TEAM (CANSail 5 & 6, with Chutes supplement) ~ TWO WEEKSPre-requisites: 2 Sessions of CANSail ADVANCED and/or CANSail 4. This two-week course mirrors a development race team training schedule and for sailors 14+. Sailors train in the RS Feva XL dinghy as well as the Laser/Laser Radial/Laser 4.7 (please note that sessions A and C are Laser only, and sessions B and D are mixed RS Feva and Laser). The curriculum focuses on advanced teamwork skills, high level boat handling, tuning, rules, tactics, strategy, and racing. In this course, students will be introduced to the fundamental components of becoming an athlete, such as keeping a training journal, fitness and health, sports nutrition, and injury prevention. All sailors who participate in this course are encouraged to attend the end-of-summer Commodores’ Cup Regatta. Class times: 0900-1530 hrs.

Intro to High Performance Skiffs ~ TWO WEEKSPre-requisites: 1 Session of Summer Race Team and/or CANSail 6. *Recommended: Spinnaker experience in an RS Feva XL. This two-week course introduces sailors age 14+ to the high performance 29er skiff. Sailors have the opportunity to try out both the skipper and crew positions. The 29er is an ideal next step for an experienced RS Feva sailor. Sailors will learn the intricacies of sailing a more challenging and faster boat, how to make improvements in rigging and control systems, splicing and whipping, and rudimentary boat maintenance and sail care skills. Once sailors are proficient in the basic boat handling skills they will begin to apply those skills to a race course. This is an excellent course for sailors who are interested in joining the Junior Race Team in September. Class times: 0900-1530 hrs.

COMMODORES’ CUP PRE-REGATTA TRAINING CAMP ~ ONE WEEKPre-requisites: Registration in Commodores’ Cup RegattaThis one-week program is for all sailors intending to compete in RVYC’s Commodores’ Cup the following week. The classes will focus on preparing for the regatta week with exercises and practice racing to sharpen skills. CANSail curriculum will not be the focal point, however, skills for classes taken previously in the summer can be certified towards all levels. The regatta training program will have separate registrations for Optimist (suggested ages 9-14), RS Feva (suggested ages 12+), and Laser/Radial (suggested ages 14+). Class times: 0900-1530 hrs.
