Congratulations to Dr. F. Gigi Osler, the 2017 CMA President-elect Nominee

We are very pleased to announce that Dr. Osler has been selected by the members of Doctors Manitoba to be the nominee as president-elect of the Canadian Medical Association (CMA). Voting took place from February 1 to 22. Pending confirmation of the nomination by General Council in August, Dr. Osler will serve as president-elect until August 2018, where she will then become CMA President.

“Now more than ever, we need a healthy and unified voice for Canadian doctors,” explains Dr. Osler in one of her videos. “Think of it this way – what do you need and want from the CMA? And, more importantly, how can we better engage with you?” To add to the honours, Dr. Osler is the recipient of this year’s Health or Safety Promotion Award from Doctors Manitoba. This is an award given to an individual for their contribution toward improving and promoting the health or safety of Manitobans specifically or humanity in general.

A graduate from the University of Manitoba, Dr. Osler has been practicing in Winnipeg since 1998. She is currently Head of the Section of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery at St. Boniface Hospital and is an Assistant Professor with the Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery at the University of Manitoba. Dr. Osler’s work is not limited to Canada; she has spent time educating physicians and nurses in Vietnam as part of the Canadians Helping Kids in Vietnam initiative, and has also volunteered in Africa to help train other surgeons.

Throughout her campaign, Dr. Osler promised to address physician health, ensure work-life balance and promote leadership development for all physicians. Excellence in medicine runs throughout her family, as Dr. Osler is the great-great-great niece in law of Sir William Osler, one of Canada’s most famous physicians and former CMA President. Dr. Françoise P. Chagnon of Montreal QC President, the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (Excerpt from RCPSC media release February 24, 2017)

Our congratulations to Dr. Chagnon, the new President of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (2017–2019).

She has already earned a long list of accomplishments from her career: voice specialist to professional artists, businesswoman for an international family business and hosting presentations at McGill’s Schulich School of Music. Now she has another position to add to her resume: 44th President of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada.

Effective today, the McGill educated otolaryngologist heads an organization that represents over 48,000 medical specialists in Canada. Her focus during her two-year mandate is promoting engagement between Fellows and the Royal College.

“I want to grow this profession through mentorship, ensuring all specialists have our support at every stage in their career,” she said. “By bettering ourselves, we’re giving our patients the best care every day.”
